A Tribute To Jack Johnson
A Tribute To Jack Johnson (numbered 180 gram audiophile SuperVinyl LP)
Cat: 821797 151610.
Review: Miles Davis' A Tribute to Jack Johnson stands as a pinnacle of jazz-rock fusion, blending slashing rock and aggressive funk with an astounding lineup. Mastered from the original tapes, Mobile Fidelity's reissue captures the music's aggression and immediacy like never before. Guitarist John McLaughlin delivers a nasty edge and vicious streak, bridging the gap between rock and jazz with his slashing style. Davis' trumpet solos sizzle with exuberance, surrounded by urgent backbeats and knifing riffs. An amazing degree of instrumental separation and imaging allow you to focus on singular musicians and the roles they play. The album, often overshadowed by Davis' other works, serves as a personal manifesto, saluting boxing legend Jack Johnson. Producer Ted Macero seamlessly assembles sessions, resulting in a lean, guitar-heavy sound that hits with brutal force and graceful elegance. A Tribute to Jack Johnson remains a monster album, demanding to be experienced in all its ferocious glory.

Review: Ben Webster's At The Renaissance captures a spellbinding live performance recorded at The Renaissance in Hollywood on Oct 14, 1960. Accompanied by a stellar ensemble including pianist Jimmy Rowles, guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Red Mitchell, and drummer Frank Butler, Webster delivers a captivating set that showcases his superior and creative form. The album's repertoire offers a delightful variety, from the heartfelt rendition of 'Georgia on My Mind' to the infectious energy of 'Ole Miss Blues.' Review: Laufey's Bewitched: The Goddess Edition continues her commitment to blending jazz and classical music with impeccable style. From the Chordettes-style harmonies of 'Dreamer' to the stripped-back intimacy of 'Second Best,' the album is a showcase of lush strings and swooning tales of love. While tracks like 'From The Start' and "Promise" offer playful bossa nova vibes and nods to Debussy and St Vincent, respectively, the album maintains a cohesive sound throughout. Laufey's crystalline voice and effortless charisma shine on every track, elevating the album into a gorgeous display of her unique talent. Review: Bill Laurance's Bloom marks a grand transition from intimate duo collaborations to a widescreen orchestral spectacle. Teaming up with Manchester's Untold Orchestra, Laurance delivers a riveting fusion of classical sensibilities, jazz improvisation, and pop grooves. The eponymous opener features dark string chords expanding into a rhythmic journey with piano melodies and hypnotic improvisation. Inspired by his child's imaginative capacity, Laurance crafts a sonic landscape that evokes Baroque, Vivaldi, and modern influences, all while maintaining a sense of wonder and exploration. The Untold Orchestra shines in their tightness and sensitivity, elevating Laurance's compositions to cinematic heights. With Bloom, Laurance strikes a delicate balance between technical mastery and emotive storytelling, creating a stunning listening experience that invites listeners to lose themselves in its dreamlike realms.

Review: Blue Note's superb Tone Poet Series continues with an album that resulted from Alfred Lion's inspired idea to put tenor saxophonist Stanley Turrentine and The Three Sounds - a trio including pianist Gene Harris, bassist Andrew Simpkins, and drummer Bill Dowdy - together on this album from 1960. Blue Hour stands as one of the most soulful hard bop albums in the Blue Note collection. Both Stanley Turrentine and The Three Sounds were at the outset of their enduring relationships with the label, with Turrentine recently debuting as a leader with "Look Out" and the trio introducing themselves in 1958 with "Introducing The 3 Sounds." This late-night session captivates with seductive renditions of four standards, including 'I Want A Little Girl,' 'Gee Baby, Ain't I Good To You' and 'Since I Fell For You.'

Review: Fresh, fabulous and funky reissued trax sourced from the collective mind of the historic group Goma Laca, first released a hell of a long time ago sometime in the indeterminate period between 1920 (!) and 1950 on the Goma-Laca label. Now reissued by Jazz Room, 'Cala Baca Menino' and its counterparts 'Ogum' are two stonking Afrobrasilidades, flaunting the effortless vocals of Russo Passapusso and Jucara Marcal, not to mention the quick double-bass and piano caresses of Marco Paiva and Hercules Gomes respectively, plus Sergio Machado on drums and Gabi Guedes on percussion. Under the direction of Letieres, the group produced many records such as this: jazzy arrangements over Afro-Bahian rhythms, with everything recorded live at Estudio Traquitana, Sao Paulo.

Review: Recorded and released in The Netherlands by Gerry Teekens for his Criss Cross label in 1985, Chet's Choice marked one of the best studio albums from Chet Baker's final years. He would die in The Netherlands after falling from the window of his hotel room in Amsterdam on May 13, 1988. Chet's Choice presents Baker, beautifully captured in stereo, singing and playing the trumpet in an intimate trio format with guitarist Philip Catherine (born in England but raised in Belgium, Chet frequently worked with him from 1983 to 1988) and Belgian bassist Jean-Louis Rassinfosse on most of the tracks (three tunes were taped during a second session with Dutch bassist Hein van de Geijn). This expanded edition presents the full seven tunes from the original album plus three songs that only previously appeared on the CD edition of Chet's Choice, as well as five amazing never before heard alternate takes, which add nearly 40 minutes of unreleased music to Chet Baker's superb catalogue.

Review: Jackpot US reissue the 1967 Impulse! standout and instrumental masterpiece from Mel Brown, Chicken Fat. Initially working as a guitar player for such greats as Sonny Boy Williamson & Etta James, Impulse! eventually offered Mel Brown the chance to record his own material. Recorded in 1967 in Hollywood, CA, Brown amassed a group of session musicians who had previously played with Charles Mingus, Marvin Gaye, and Dizzy Gillespie. Much of the album was arranged by Oliver Nelson, who worked with Thelonious Monk, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith and more. His touch is felt all over the record and helps solidify the journey; these sessions reflect the Sunset Strip and the energy of late 60s Los Angeles so accurately that you can almost hear the go-go boots hit the floor.

Review: Recorded in Los Angeles with an impressive lineup including Bobby Hutcherson, Reggie Johnson, Ndugu, Woody Theus, Bill Henderson, and Harold Land Jr., Chroma captures the essence of the Harold Land-Bobby Hutcherson quintet's signature blend of funky and modal jazz. The album's original gatefold artwork is faithfully reproduced, accompanied by newly remastered audio and insightful liner notes by Kevin Le Gendre. Choma (Burn) features four tracks with the quintet's innovative instrumentation accompanied by the unique addition of two drummers, Ndugu and Woody "Sonship" Theus, playing simultaneously alongside Reggie Johnson's robust double bass and Bill Henderson and Harold Land Jr.'s piano and Fender Rhodes. Harold Land's legacy as a pioneer of the hard bop style shines through in this album, reflecting his influential contributions to the West Coast jazz scene since the 1950s. His collaboration with Bobby Hutcherson in the late 60s and early 70s produced a series of highly acclaimed albums, with Choma (Burn) standing out to the quintet's creative peak.

Review: A groundbreaking 1973 post-bop, avant-garde jazz masterpiece from Argentina, Coraje Buenos Aires is infused with potent political themes and now emerges from obscurity. The record serves as the missing link in Argentina's jazz legacy, and surfaces after five decades to shed light on a tumultuous era. Recorded as a sequel to the seminal Bronca Buenos Aires (1971), Coraje boldly denounces the oppressive military regime through its poignant texts. Despite censorship attempts, the album's tapes resurfaced from the archive of the late Jorge Lopez Ruiz, meticulously restored by Pablo Lopez Ruiz. Accompanied by bilingual notes from Jose Tcherkaski, this historic release redefines Argentina's jazz narrative with its raw authenticity and unyielding spirit.

Fearless Movement arrives on Young Records after his monumental previous works like The Epic in 2015 and Heaven and Earth in 2018. Departing from his signature celestial grandeur, this album embraces diverse influences from jazz to Latin, funk, to hip-hop. Another key aspect is Washington's collaboration with his daughter and an array of musical icons that all result in a vibrant fusion of sounds and a fresh perspective on musical connectivity.

This release marks John Taylor's third venture as a bandleader, succeeding his debut, 'Pause, And Think Again,' issued by Turtle Records in 1971. The sextet lineup features Stan Sulzmann, Kenny Wheeler, Chris Pyne, Chris Laurence, and Tony Levin, with Norma Winstone contributing her vocals on the debut.

Review: Ghosted 2, produced by Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werlin, presents a fascinating fusion of various genres - Electronic, Jazz, Folk, World, and Country. However, it's not the amalgamation of styles that captivates but the abstract, experimental nature of their endeavor. This record leans into the boundaries of free improvisation, with a heavy emphasis on texture and atmosphere. The instrumentation is minimal, with delicate drumming that weaves through the soundscape while subtle guitar strums and drones create a hazy, hypnotic ambiance. What sets this apart is its exploration of silence. Long stretches of negative space linger, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the subtle nuances and intricacies of the performance. The result is an album that is as challenging as it is rewarding, inviting multiple listens to unravel its sonic secrets.

Review: Nils Okland, known for his innovative playing style on the Hardanger fiddle, violin, and viola d'amore, comes from the folk music tradition and internationally recognized, is interested in the journeys and dialogues of music across time and space, a music without national and traditional borders. But he is also inspired by local music from various places and often prefers old fiddlers and singers who have a unique personal playing style. The Nils Okland Band debuted in 2014 and since then has released the Norwegian Grammy-nominated Kjolvatn on ECM and Lysning on Hubro. It has been seven years since their last release but now the highly anticipated album Gjenskinn (Gleam) arrives after being worked on for a long time. It is a genre-defying, cohesive work inspired by influences from around the world.

Review: A landmark record in the realm of piano jazz, Groovy is an evocative album of both standards and originals by the jazz pianist Red Garland, a Texan legend known for his career-long work alongside Miles Davis and Charlie Parker. Vintage in sound, with a single-take recording allowing in an extra-authentic vintage dust between the cracks, this Craft Recordings reissue recalls Garland's impressively heartbled, locked-hand playing, most notably on the utter beauty that is 'Gone Again' (Curtis Lewis), which even ventures so far as to meander into far-flung chromatics on the lead line; the whole album sounds to follow this song, with its mix allowing extra, weightless headroom for the piano to poke out from above things.

Review: The Canterbury scene alumni Soft Machine and their live album Hovikodden 1971 in Norway marks a significant turning point in the band's history, as it captures their transition into a fully instrumental ensemble. This beautifully packaged four record box set showcases the band's exceptional musicality and experimentation, blending elements of psychedelic rock, progressive rock, jazz rock, and proto-rock to create a unique and captivating sound. Despite their limited commercial success, Soft Machine's influence on rock music cannot be understated. Their innovative approach to instrumentation and composition has inspired countless subsequent artists and continues to resonate with fans of experimental and progressive rock. Hovikodden 1971 serves as a great example to the band's enduring legacy and their pivotal role in shaping the evolution of rock music and Cuneiform did a great job in taking the archives from the original reels and respectfully remixing any parts that needed a slight polish.

Emerging from Braufman's introspective mental soundtrack, the album presents a surprisingly catchy program of free jazz, showcasing Braufman's richly detailed and forthright sound. His near-constant musical musings, translated into compositions, offer a range of emotions and circumstances that speak to individuality, collectivity, and hope. With a career spanning over fifty years, Braufman's return to the spotlight with Infinite Love Infinite Tears demonstrates his enduring vitality and artistic evolution. The original track was a rare slice of instrumental funk music, dare say instrumental music at all, to climb the UK charts and remain in its upper echelons for a solid twenty weeks. Though its initial popularity was lengthy, it has since then gone underground, becoming a throwback favourite of the likes of Kerri Chandler, Mr. Scruff and Gilles Peterson, to name but a few icons to play it back out over the years.

Review: Jazz Is Dead continues its tradition of honouring jazz legends while pushing boundaries with Remixes JID020. Featuring dynamic remixes from contemporary artists, the album breathes new life into classics from the series. Mophono's reinvention of Tony Allen's 'Don't Believe the Dancers' pays homage to Afrobeat traditions, while Melanie Charles adds a refreshing ode to Blackness in her remix of Jean Carne's 'Black Rainbows.' Shabaka Hutchins' take on Henry Franklin's 'African Sun' merges West African rhythms with jazz modalities, creating a mesmerizing musical meditation. Throughout JID020, the spirit of collaboration shines, with artists staying true to their unique sounds while preserving the essence of the original recordings. This album not only adds depth to the Jazz Is Dead catalogue but also highlights the timeless appeal of jazz fusion and the power of cross-generational collaboration in keeping the genre alive and vibrant.

Review: Left Alone is an album by American jazz pianist Mal Waldron recorded in 1959 and released on the Bethlehem label. 'Left Alone' is Waldron's signature song, coming as a subtle cover-tribute to the Billie Holiday song of the same name. Waldron's homage is shrewd, subtle and prowling, lurching ever-so-slowly forward with its sustained chords, held together rhymthically by a rather bare-bones (but intentionally so) percussion backing by Al Dreares. The mood is lonesome throughout, with Jackie McLean's alto sax providing much of the typical mood of blue jazz, against which Waldron's lower-register playing can truly shine.

Lovely Day (Studio Rio instrumental version)
Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

Review: The pioneering American jazz trumpeter Howard McGhee was one of the first to do bebop and this is often noted as a legacy for which he never truly did receive credit by the history books. Maggie's Back In Town!!, however, released in 1961 on the Contemporary label, is the most likely candidate for piercing this occlusive remainder; it's a tight, light tsk-tsker, on which McGhee's playing is never once heard getting ahead of itself or biting off more than it can chew. The mood is laconic and muted, as if to demonstrate McGhee's relaxed persona and long-awaited return to town. Phineas Newborn Jr (piano), Leroy Vinnegar (bass) and Shelly Manne (drums) add to the hoo-hah with their virtuosic but subtle sang-froid.

The group played a pivotal role in shaping the European jazz scene of the 60s, never more so than with their timeless Music For The Small Hours record in 1967. It takes in an array of influences and includes standards like Burt Bacharach's 'Wives & Lovers' as well as more Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groovers like Luiz Bonfa's 'Ebony Samba'. The original compositions shine too, with Shihab's 'Please, Don't Leave' showcasing his vocal talents and adding a real depth. Review: Gerry Mulligan's album Night Lights exemplifies his mastery of the baritone saxophone within the West Coast jazz scene. Recorded at The Nola Penthouse Studios in New York, Mulligan's quintet delivers a captivating performance. The title track sets the tone with Mulligan's crystalline piano work, while Art Farmer and Bob Brookmeyer showcase their finesse in solos. Louis Bonfa's 'Carnival' and 'Wee Small Hours' evoke emotion, with standout solos by Jim Hall. Mulligan's arrangement of Chopin's 'Prelude In E Minor' adds depth, leading into the upbeat 'Festive Minor' and the tender 'Tell Me When.' Despite being overlooked upon its release, Night Lights remains a gem, cherished by enthusiasts for its timeless elegance and still growing with recognition,

Perennial Favorites (reissue)
Cat: MAMM 145059.1. Rel: 03 May 24
Review: Squirrel Nut Zippers' third studio album, Perennial Favorites, receives its first vinyl reissue since its original 1998 release, bringing back the infectious energy and eclectic blend of styles that characterized the neo-swing movement. What sets the band apart from its contemporaries is its ability to capture the genuine spirit of hot jazz, acknowledging the darker undertones and genuine hedonism of the era. Led by charismatic vocals and backed by a tight ensemble, the album delivers a mix of catchy hooks and loose-limbed glee. Tracks like 'Suits are Picking Up the Bill' and 'Fat Cat Keeps Getting Fatter display the band's knack for solid hooks and playful arrangements, while 'Ghost of Stephen Foster' and 'That Fascinating Thing' hint at the subtext that informed swing and hot jazz. Perennial Favorites stands out as a genuine and joyous celebration of the genre. The album effortlessly dabbles in various styles, from big-band swing to jazz crooning to klezmer, all while maintaining a sense of musical accomplishment and respect for history.

Review: Made up of Jun Miyake and Ichiko Aoba's live sessions held in Tokyo in November 2016 and the following February 2017, Pneuma consists of valuable recordings that had only been released in high-resolution format for distribution; the record is now finally released in vinyl format here on P-Vine. The first performance in January featured Tatsuhisa Yamamotoon on drums and the second in February made up a quartet formation with the addition of bassist Hitoshi Watanabe. The two ultra-talented musicians provide us a glimpse into how the music of Jun Miyake and Ichiko Aoba is made and this record breathes into their practice a new life.

Rhapsody In Blue
Cat: 485493 0. Rel: 26 Apr 24
Review: Benjamin Grosvenor's latest release, the second installment in his Decca contract, showcases his exceptional talent in works for piano and orchestra. Teaming up with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic under James Judd's baton, Grosvenor delivers captivating interpretations of Saint-Saens' Second Piano Concerto, Ravel's G Major Concerto, and Gershwin's iconic Rhapsody in Blue. While the combined choice of repertoire might seem unconventional, Grosvenor's artistry shines through, effortlessly transitioning between the diverse styles of each composer. His refined yet impassioned playing captivates listeners, whether navigating the lyrical passages of Ravel's concerto or infusing Gershwin's jazz-infused melodies with infectious vitality. The accompanying solo 'encores' further showcase Grosvenor's virtuosity, with standout performances of Saint-Saens' 'The Swan,' Ravel's Prelude in A Minor', and Gershwin's 'Love Walked In.' Each piece is delivered with exquisite precision and sensitivity, demonstrating Grosvenor's mastery across a range of repertoire.

Review: Jasmine Myra's sophomore album Rising is apparently named after her current status in the UK jazz game. She deserves the recognition: the saxophonist, composer and bandleader lays down a beautiful six-piece project here, providing a brilliant dialgue to contrast her first LP Horizons. Myra describes Rising as a "reflection of a period of my life", following on as the logical continuation from Horizons, which was "all about my experience during lockdown, and entailed overcoming my struggles with mental health". Rising, the sonic reply, charts Myra's experience of continuing to bulld her self-confidence. Through its glistening, refractive, yet soft progressions, demarked by detailed bell acoutrements and mutedly ascendant sax progressions from the star herself, the likes of 'Rising', 'Glimmers' and 'From Embers' make for fantastic spirited listens.

How Tall The Mountains
Review: Saxophonist and bandleader Jasmine Myra's sophomore album, Rising, builds on the success of her breakthrough album Horizons to deliver yet another major statement. With the fact that she is indeed one of UK jazz's hottest rising stars in mind, the title is only fitting; enlisting the help of many fellow contemporary greats including Greg Freeman and Matthew Halsall, Myra channels her favourite crossover influences, from Bonobo to Kenny Wheeler to Shabaka Hutchings, for an incredible through-composition, ornamented throughout by every spiritual staple from tubular chimes to fluffed-out sax swells to tremulous timpani rollings. In the moments where she's not flourishing in the beatless interstices, she's orchestrating the kind of sublime slow-builds that do well to move even the hardest of hearts. In her own words, (Rising) is a reflection of a period of my life. It is a continuation from Horizons, which was all about my experience during lockdown, and entailed overcoming my struggles with mental health. Following on from that experience, I set out to continue building my self-confidence".

Review: Udacha family band Zdehvedo Gob is a collective of musicians who all hail from various cities around the world. It consists of Udacha label head Alexey Kalik as well as drummer Roman Shestaev and Gamayun associates Anton Dvoenko and Stas Mitrofanov and they all got together in the studio in Moscow in summer 2023 and the results are now presented on this new album. Employing an organic music approach to instrumentation combined with subtle electronics, the group go wild for various combinations of off-kilter percussion, organ, chant and birdsong in full ceremonial swing, they trace a path through the various branches of 20th century minimalism, pan-global folk-ism's and the harmonious collective consciousness that My Life In A Bush Of Ghosts encapsulated. It's a gorgeous mix of world, jazz, spiritual percussive, experimental music that rides on nice loose and vibrant rhythms with a great mix of synthetic and organic sounds all offering plenty for the mind as well as the body to get excited about.

Review: Greg Foat is a London-based keyboardist, composer, bandleader and DJ. Foat's latest full-length record displays the musician's lifelong, self-described 'love-hate relationship' with the keys, which he says began in childhood, when he fell off a piano stool at his aunt's house. A domestic homage, 'Spider Plant Blues' fittingly pays tribute to two houseplants that sit on Greg's bedside tables, and move periodically depending on his whims; 'Spider Plant Blues' is an evening high-flyer for electric piano, unbothered drums and backing strings, while 'Snake Plant Shuffle' is a darker and drier organism backed by arpeggiating sytnhy blossomings in the stereo mix.

Review: The Spiritual Jazz Series has been going strong since 2008 and has always looked to celebrate a rich tradition of African-American songs that takes inspiration from a belief in a higher force, as well as focussing on certain geographical regions. The stylistic diversity across these traditions is vast. Historic labels like Blue Note, Impulse!, Prestige, and Steeplechase are also featured, offering a treasure trove of music relevant to Spiritual Jazz. Spiritual Jazz 16 focuses on Riverside and its associated labels, founded in 1953 by Orrin Keepnews and Bill Grauer. This era marked the emergence of modern jazz, encompassing bebop, hard bop, cool, modal, and Latin jazz.
