Review: Popular Hull-based shoegaze quartet bdrmm are building up to their latest tour with the release of single 'Standard Tuning, arriving hot on the heels of their critically acclaimed second album, 'I Don't Know'. Written and recorded during those same sessions and very much similarly flavoured, it continues a fine vein of form right now, with high praise coming in from the likes of Rolling Stone and Consequence. This special 10" also comes with a remix of the live favourite 'Alps' by Ninja Tune/Cambria Instruments electronica specialist Nathan Fake.

Review: It All Comes Down to This is the album latest release from Manchester icons A Certain Ratio, and it's a record that is helmed by producer Dan Carey from Speedy Wunderground. Somewhat returning to their origins, the record presents ten concise tracks with a hint of the group's signature electronic flair. Notably, it's the first recording featuring the core trio of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop, and Donald Johnson, without any additional collaborators. From their celebrated 1982 album and right up to their dynamic last EP in 2023, this album shows the band's still evolving and still committed to new musical advancements. A testament to their enduring legacy, It All Comes Down to This solidifies A Certain Ratio's place among Manchester's finest.

Review: The cult favourite Dark Entries hits 15 in style here and celebrates in the only way it knows how - with more great music. This time it is the legendary synth-punk yahoos Crash Course in Science aka Dale Feliciello, Mallory Yago, and Michael Zodorozny who are in the spotlight. The group formed back in 1979 and set out to make music using toy instruments and kitchen appliances. Their punk-y, aggressive, angular sound soon found a hardcore fan base and gave rise to big tunes like 'Cardboard Lamb' and 'Flying Turns.' In 1981 they recorded Near Marineland, a full-length that never actually saw the light of day but does now and shows the band moving into more diverse and polished territory.

Review: Contemporary indie icon St. Vincent's (Anne Erin Clark's) seventh full-length record All Born Screaming follows up 2021's The Nowhere Inn, and contrasts to that record with its intense introspective plunging of the personal depths, to find what Clark deemed her own sonic vocabulary. Arriving at a distinction she dubbed 'post-plague pop', All Born Screaming centres on a crooked and menacing sound with a reckless spirit, with lead cuts like 'Broken Man' giving raw Knife-like instrumentation and masc monarchic ironies on the lyrics, as if to suggest a significant patriarchal downfall to come. That line is said to be representative of the album's mood as a whole; "that lustre and swagger that you feel right before things go terribly wrong!"

Review: Berlin-based, Canada-born experimenter Aidan Baker tinkers often with slowcore, drone, and avant-garde darkness, both solo and with such groups as Nadja, Hypnodrone Ensemble and WERL. His latest, Songs Of Undoing, aims at more of a "deconstructed" grunge/slowcore palette, stripping almost every facet of the style back to reveal an impressively unpolished backbone. Musings on reckoning, alienation, and ruination resound across an album of doomy quietude - never going so far as to indulge huge cathartic moments and instead preferring to rest in waveringly gothic, ruminatory recesses.

Cat: UNROCK 301. Rel: 26 Apr 24
Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

Review: The Oscillation's latest album, The Start Of The End, marks a triumphant return for the band, showcasing a newfound sense of purpose and optimism. Departing from their previous meditative explorations, this record explores light and shade with a mood of hope and rebirth. Demian Castellanos, the creative force behind The Oscillation, drew inspiration from a change in location, channelling introspection and reflection into the music. The result is a diverse yet cohesive album that ranges from celestial majesty to pulsing grooves, all brimming with zeal and confidence. Tracks like 'War On The Mind' and 'Body Electric' showcase melodic infusions and hypnotic repetition, while the title track and closer 'Sovereign' evoke a sense of transcendence. The Start Of The End serves as a line in the sand, signaling a brighter future for The Oscillation and leaving listeners eager for what's to come.

Review: Vanishing Twin's groundbreaking album 'The Age Of Immunology receives a limited edition pressing on pink and teal vinyl here and it remains an essential exploration of psych-pop futurism that will resonate with fans of Broadcast, Sun Ra, and Ennio Morricone. The album marked the band's debut on Fire Records, and it showcases their innovative spirit. Produced by Lucas in unconventional settings, tracks like 'KRK (At Home In Strange Places)' evoke Sun Ra's 'Lanquidity', while 'You Are Not an Island' and 'Invisible World' exude enchanting lounge and Jean-Claude Vannier vibes. Review: It appears that Taylor Swift has caused somewhat of a revolution, as since the highly publicised feud with her former record label led the pop megastar to re-record and re-release her entire back catalogue, several other artists appear to be following suit by realising there lay a method ahead to reclaim their art. The latest act to take up arms against a faceless corporation (or merely be influenced by the "Taylor's Version" phenomenon) is alternative rock heroes Incubus, who after much delay, are finally ready to unveil an entirely re-recorded version of their critically acclaimed 2001 full-length Morning View. Re-dubbed Morning View XXIII, this newly revitalised version of their seminal fourth album comes on a limited blue vinyl double LP, complete with sonically sprawling renditions of some of their most essential anthems from the alt-metal bounce of 'Nice To Know You' to the anthemic serenity of 'Wish You Were Here' all the way to the aquatic funk of 'Are You In?' If you're yet to cop this early 21st century classic, make Incubus' version your only option.

Review: The Belgian modern classical folk band's 12th album is the soundtrack to a series of short, abstract animation films by Rudy Trouve, who also acted as a creative director during the recording process. These took place according to conceptual guide lines set by Trouve. Sometimes the starting point was a play on words or a random chord sequence, sometimes a specific atmosphere, but the playing field was always kept deliberately limited. Hence, the musicians were forced to build a musical structure with minimal means, with the pieces then cut up, sampled, drastically restructured and pasted together again, a method that had been applied earlier on the retrospective album Hineininterpretierung (2017). The result is a work of art that is both visually and musically stunning. The music is often sparse and atmospheric, with a strong emphasis on texture and space, it's hard to categorise but is definitely a unique and captivating album.

Review: Angelica Garcia's Gemelo is a bold exploration of grief and self-discovery, encapsulated in a vibrant tapestry of hybrid-pop sounds. The album delves into the complexities of grief, from its inherent loneliness to its eventual liberation, while also deconstructing universal themes like religion, heritage, and womanhood. As a reflection of modern America's cultural landscape, Gemelo marks Garcia's first album predominantly sung in Spanish, challenging traditional notions of what constitutes an American record. Produced by Carlos Arevalo of Chicano Batman, the album is meticulously sequenced, guiding listeners through a journey from delicate introspection to visceral intensity. Born in East LA with Mexican and Salvadoran roots, Garcia embodies the evolving fusion of Hispanic influences in contemporary America. 'Color De Dolor,' the lead has lush textures and a kaleidoscopic quality and offers a captivating glimpse into the artist's multifaceted world. Following her acclaimed 2020 release Cha Cha Palace, which garnered attention for its innovative sound, Gemelo solidifies Garcia's place as a rising star in the music scene with captivating melodies and thought-provoking themes.

Review: For the first time in over 26 years, much-loved metallers Pearl Jam finally topped mainstream rock airplay charts in the US with the first single off their latest album. That came some 1000 days ahead of the album itself which has now finally arrived and has soon won over fans. That single, 'Dark Matter', became Pearl Jam's first No. 1 on the chart since 'Given To Fly' led for six weeks all the way back in January-February 1998. The rest of the album is full of just as much gold as that, with plenty more of their signature riffs and potent grooves all topped with Eddie Vedder's legendary lung-busting vocals.

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Review: The Libertines is a rather divisive band but we are firmly in the fan camp. It's great to have the pari of Carl Barat and Pete Doherty back working together as older, wiser men, but happily their music has lost none of the urgency it had when they were drug loving youths. They defined a specific period in UK music culture back at the turn of the millennium and are now back for more with All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade, which according to frontman Pete Doherty happened "in a moment of rare peace". Lead single 'Run Run Run' has already performed well brings both lots of raw riffs, raucous energy and some of the superb songwriting they were famous for first time around.

Batman (Gary The Tall v Exotic Gardens Reversion)
Review: Emotional Rescue takes another trip into the twisted world of post-punk dubs, electronics and oddities here at the hands of DJ, collector and radio host Gary The Tall. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

It was also Television Personalities' first collection of new music on new label Overground Records following the label putting out two live albums and nine reissued singles. Now it gets repressed and served up on wax once more but with the added bonus of eleven new tracks recorded by Liam Watson at Toe Rag Studios. his marked the band's last original album with everything coming after taking the form of covers or compilations.

Review: Bernard Butler's Good Grief album marks his triumphant return to solo work after a hiatus of 25 years, during which he delved into diverse musical endeavours from pop songwriting to producing acclaimed albums with various artists. Reflecting on his journey, Butler candidly shares his apprehensions and eventual rediscovery of his solo voice, culminating in the creation of this album. Drawing inspiration from his experiences and collaborations, Butler's songwriting process for the LP was deeply introspective, allowing him to confront his emotions and craft lyrics that resonate with authenticity. The album encapsulates three decades of Butler's musical evolution, weaving together themes of loss, joy, and bewilderment. Butler's melodies are poignant and evocative, accompanied by his signature guitar work and soulful vocals. A testament to his enduring talent and a welcome return for fans of his solo work.

Review: The Melvins, known for their unapologetically experimental and abrasive sound, continue their legacy of sonic exploration with Tarantula Heart, set for release via Ipecac Recordings. The album, featuring a five-track lineup, including the sprawling 19-minute opener 'Pain Equals Funny, which displays the band's penchant for pushing the boundaries of conventional music. One of the album's defining features is the incorporation of dual drum parts, with longtime Melvins drummer Dale Crover teaming up with Roy for an impressive display of rhythmic complexity. This collaboration adds a new dimension to the Melvins' sound, further solidifying their reputation as pioneers of unconventional music. Recorded, mixed, and co-produced by Toshi Kasai, a longtime collaborator of the band, Tarantula Heart adds to the album's eclectic sonic palette. While The Melvins may never achieve mainstream success due to their avant-garde approach, this album stands by their unwavering commitment to artistic integrity and innovation, making it a must-listen for fans of boundary-pushing music everywhere.

Review: Soft Kill's Escape Forever is a poignant reflection on both past memories and present realities. With Chicago artist RBTayskii as a guiding force, the album delivers thirteen raw tracks that oscillate between nostalgia and contemporary chaos. Guitars and melodies take centre stage, offering a compelling exploration of creation amidst tumultuous times. Soft Kill grapples with the complexities of a world striving for harmony while acknowledging the struggles of the past. Escape Forever is a reverie on humility and intentionality in an increasingly intricate world. It hearkens back to bygone eras yet remains firmly rooted in the present, capturing the essence of our current environment. Overall you gave a terrific melodic post-punk album from a band poised enough to keep triumphantly succeeding at it again and again.

Review: Chicago-bred noise rock legends Shellac deliver their sixth studio album To All Trains, following up 2019's The End Of Radio Peel Session retrospective with an abiding, slowly-honed new full-length - their first original work in a decade. Though released to little fanfare, To All Trains is a totemic album, committing to themes of transience and dread; guitarist Steve Albini, drummer Todd Trainer and bassist Bob Weston do it properly here, promising a pristine new release born of long weekends, tireless sweats and, naturally, all-analog treatment at Albini's Electrical Audio studio in Chicago.

Review: Cranes' third album, Loved offers the band's unique blend of alternative rock, shoegaze, dream-pop, and darkwave. Released in 1994, it solidified Cranes' reputation for crafting beautifully orchestrated and constructed songs that evoke a strange and powerful atmosphere. Fresh off their tour opening for the The Cure in late 1992, Cranes returned to their gothic roots while still maintaining the essence of their previous album, Forever. The album shows a variety of musical styles and emotions, Loved is a masterpiece of minimalistic perfection, seamlessly blending gothic ether and shoegaze droning. Even decades later, its beauty remains timeless. Cranes evoke a longing for connection amidst dreamy atmospheres. Unexpected bursts of sonic exaltation punctuate the album, adding to its magnificence. Now available as a 30th-anniversary edition on white marbled vinyl, Loved is a must-have for fans of Cranes and anyone who appreciates finely crafted alternative music. With only 1000 individually numbered copies, this edition is sure to become a collector's item for enthusiasts of the band's distinctive sound.

Review: "Herd immunity" was certainly a phrase banded about during the pandemic, and we all know what it means, but what about if / when the phrase is taken figuratively? Cathy Lucas, Susumu Mukai, Elliott Arndt, Phil MFU and Valentina Magaletti make up the quintet that is Vanishing Twin, whose latest album The Age Of Immunology metaphorically attempts to answer this question. Today's tribulations, often of humanity's own doing, nonetheless require of us that we adapt, regardless of any long-term psychic damage this causes; whether one finds any sense of poetry in the literal reflection of this in the doling out of vaccines en masse remains to be decided by you, the listener. Psychopolitical ramblings aside, The Age Of Immunology follows up the band's yetmost experimental album Magic And Machines, and hears them emerge from the other side through dreamy post-punk cinematics ('KRK'), wahhing, whirling instrumental disco-kraut ('Cryonic Suspension May Save Your Life'), and boinging, 'Ashes To Ashes' style summer psych balladry ('Magician's Success'). All ironically work as temporary salves for the soul, reflecting a surreal fantasy space that almost certianly works to simultaneously reflect and deflect the era we find ourselves in now.

As it transpires, Lives Outgrown has been ruminating for some time as Gibbons reflects on the passage of time, working closely with James Ford (of Simian Mobile Disco fame) and Talk Talk's Lee Harris to develop a distinct, gently psychedelic art rock-meets indie pop sound. Throughout, the album is guided by Gibbons' distinctive approach to songwriting, sounding like a natural cousin to her work in Portishead or her earlier solo album Out Of Season, while also offering something beguiling fresh and unsurprisingly brilliant. Review: Conor O'Brien's sixth album under the Villagers moniker, That Golden Time, takes a departure from the band-oriented sound of its predecessor, Fever Dreams. Instead, O'Brien delivers a collection of vulnerable and intimate solo-based songs, recorded mostly in his own apartment. The album's title reflects its warm and nostalgic atmosphere, while also touching on the tension between romanticism and realism in life.
Continuing his tradition of crafting melodies that captivate and arrangements that subtly enhance the emotional depth of his lyrics, O'Brien invites listeners into his world of hopes, fears, and dreams expressed through richly absorbing poetry. Despite the intimate nature of the album, O'Brien collaborates with guest musicians, including Planxty's Dónal Lunny, to add depth and texture to the sonic landscape. O'Brien's artistry and ability to create music that resonates deeply with listeners is also a journey into the heart and mind of one of Ireland's most talented singer-songwriters.

Delving into themes of love, loss, and the complexities of growing older, McAlpine's heartfelt lyrics and captivating vocals resonate deeply with listeners. The album opens with the enchanting 'The Elevator,' setting the tone for what's to come with its harmonious melodies and introspective lyrics. From there, McAlpine navigates through the highs and lows of relationships in tracks like 'Come Down Soon' and 'Like It Tends To Do,' where she grapples with insecurity and uncertainty. Throughout Older, McAlpine's songwriting prowess shines as she candidly explores her personal experiences, including the death of her father and her own struggles with mental health. Tracks like 'All Falls Down' and 'March' offer poignant reflections on grief and resilience, while 'Vortex' delivers a powerful climax with its haunting vocals and stirring instrumentation. Bandleader Greg Gonzalez delves into the intricacies of a four-year relationship, delivering raw and imagistic vignettes set to slowburn pop melodies. With brutal intensity, Gonzalez purges his emotions, centering the album on this singular romantic arc, infusing their music with dark yet burgeoning melodies. Review: 'I'm Totally Fine With It Don't Give A Fuck Anymore' reads the WhatsApp message on the front cover of the upcoming album of the same name by Scottish duo Arab Strap. Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have been on a blazing nonstop run ever since they reunited the group in 2019. Confronting conspiracy theories, online addiction, and societal decay, the lead single 'Bliss' is a steady reminder of Arab Strap's multi-generational appeal - "It's about women being terrorized online; it's about cowardice and bigotry. It's about how we expose ourselves on social platforms while hiding alone at home. But you can dance to it too!" Moffat said on the press release. As the haunting melodies intertwine with Moffat's gritty regional vocals on the 15-track album, dimly lit dive bars and sketchy alleyways come to mind and not the cyberspace dystopia that many other musicians would go to. It's a unique take on a subject that needs unique takes, an explicit piece of sang prose in an age of censorship. Just the cover alone lets you know that Arab Strap is not going to be added to your easy-listening playlist. The icing on the cake? The cheeky decision to make the disc a bright emoji yellow.

Review: Billed as the most vital and sophisticated creation of their career yet, Fat White Family return with Forgiveness Is Yours. As if to reaffirm that forgiveness begins with forgiving oneself, the South London band's fourth album comes with limited fanfare (they hardly need it), perhaps owing to the fact that this is a record said to have pushed the band to "the limits of their very existence", entailing a consistent "will to create even when catastrophes keep happening". Forgive oneself for what, though? Torpor, apparently; from 'Bullet Of Dignity' to 'What's That You Say', this slick and suggestive indie album is a testament to finding the correct harmony in chaos, and waking up from our half-dazes to find an active truth.

Review: The avant-garage Kid Congo Powers & The Pink Monkey Birds have a new lineup for this, the fifth studio full-length of their 19-year career. That Delicious Vice arrives on gold vinyl and is strictly limited to 300 copies and was recorded and mixed by Jim Waters at his Waterworks Studios facility in Tucson. It features nine new original tracks that are some of the group's best yet including the fuzzy bass blasts of 'Wicked World' with big drums, slide guitar sounds from an imaginary western on 'Silver For My Sister' and acid-garage cumbia grooves on 'Ese Vicio Delicioso'.

Review: The sophomore studio album of American indie pop band The Marias, Submarine comes as the sequel to their debut record Cinema, and the trequel to the 'Superclean' EP. Preceded by the lead single 'Run Your Mouth', the album is a representation of solitude and exploration; in the band's own words, the act of choosing to be alone and listening to what the heart needs and not what it wants. The band's preferred mode of representing this visually is cryptic underwater videography; lyrically and sonically, we find ourselves submerged in vats of slick, glossy funk, amid lyrical themes of conflict avoidance and gossip; both serve as effective conduits through which we may find ourselves dancing and reflecting at the same time.

Review: Girls In Synthesis' album Sublimation marks a daring departure from their previous works, showing a band unafraid to explore new sonic territories. With their third album, the London-based innovators redefine their sound, delivering an album that is both dark and angular yet infused with pop sensibilities. The lead single 'Lights Out' offered the first listen into the band's evolution, blending Barrett-esque vocals and guitar melodies with a high-intensity blitz reminiscent of Faust Tapes. Divided into two distinct sections, the track captures the essence of late-night anxiety and transitions seamlessly into a driving, drum 'n' bass-infused rhythm. Recorded at Sick Room Studios with engineer Owen Turner, the album reflects a departure from the band's DIY ethos, allowing them to fully immerse themselves in the creative process. Tracks like 'Deceit' and 'We Are Here' are on the melodic side of Girls In Synthesis, while maintaining their signature intensity. Lyrically, the band delves deep into themes of anxiety, self-reflection, and human relationships, eschewing superficial sloganeering for poetic introspection. Girls In Synthesis offer a unique sound within the alternative music spectrum.

Review: Kate Nash's upcoming album for Kill Rock Stars, 9 Sad Symphonies, marks her return after six years. set to release on June 21 via . The lead single, 'Millions of Heartbeats,' offers a poignant reflection on losing hope in a world inundated with chaos and capitalism. Nash's introspective lyrics delve into the struggle of regaining one's spark amid despair, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and human connection. Produced by Frederick Thaae, the album promises a departure from harsher sounds, instead focusing on lush string arrangements and emotive storytelling. Nash draws inspiration from her recent experience writing for a musical, embracing a more direct approach to songwriting while aiming to create beauty amid darkness. 9 Sad Symphonies is poised to show the full arsenal of Nash's evolution as an artist, offering a compelling listen.

This record, while nodding to their roots, delivers 10 succinct tracks infused with the group's distinctive electronic touch and marks the first recording featuring the core trio of Jez Kerr, Martin Moscrop, and Donald Johnson without additional collaborators. The album exemplifies the band's ongoing evolution with short and sweet cuts like 'All Comes Down To This' next to the compelling likes of 'Bitten By A Lizard' and plenty in between.

Review: Strand of Oaks' upcoming album Miracle Focus signals a departure from Tim Showalter's usual folk-rock sound, embracing meditation and a diverse range of influences. Showalter's transformative journey is reflected in the album's eclectic mix, drawing inspiration from Ram Dass, yoga, Freddie Mercury, Alice Coltrane and the Beastie Boys. Produced by Kevin Ratterman, the album features backing vocals from Lacey Guthrie and features Showalter's newfound love for synthesisers and painting. The lead single 'More You' abandons guitars for swirling ambient synths, signaling a bold evolution in Showalter's sonic palette. 'Miracle Focus' promises to be a love letter to bliss and a celebration of life's complexities, offering listeners a temple of peace and a soundtrack for dancing through existence together.

Review: Drop Nineteens' album Delaware captures the essence of the shoegaze movement with its fuzzy guitars, serene harmonies, and dissonant melodies. While the band's sound draws comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, their lack of mainstream success can be attributed to the rise of grunge and bands like Smashing Pumpkins in the early 90s. The album has many moments of brilliance, such as the sprawling noise of 'Kick the Tragedy' and the catchy melodies of 'Madonna' and 'Happen.' However, some tracks fall flat with generic riffs and uninspired songwriting. Delaware includes strong vocal performances by Greg Ackell and Paula Kelley, particularly on tracks like 'Reberrymemberer.' Overall, Delaware is a very worthwhile listen for fans of the shoegaze movement or late 80s alternative/indie music.

Review: The new Bat For Lashes album, her sixth, is an ode to motherhood, created during Khan's experience giving birth to her daughter Delphi during the COVID-19 pandemic. The contents of the ten-song album, described as "song poems," are a personal and transformative exploration of both the external chaos of the pandemic and the intimate journey of becoming a mother. Featuring the title track, which is already available, the album promises a diary-like intimacy and a rich collaboration with musicians like Brad Oberhofer, Mary Lattimore and Jack Falby.

Review: The Dream of Delphi is the sixth album for the Los Angeles singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist Bat For Lashes. Critics have likened her music to the work of Joni Mitchell, Nico, Siouxsie Sioux, Bjork, Kate Bush, Cat Power, PJ Harvey, Annie Lennox, Tori Amos, and Fiona Apple and this album reflects on the conception and birth of Khan's daughter Delphi during the 2020 Covid-19 pandemic. Samples of the album are still guarded closely upon writing this but expect more great songwriting, electronic elements and a strong post punk influence. With a release date of late May, this indie exclusive is pressed on red vinyl.
