Review: A reissue of 2022's covers single, Alvarius B's 'Karaoke' gets a second run via Unrock. A titan of the US underground singer-songwriter scene, Alan Bishop is best known as a co-founder of Sun City Girls and owner of the labels Abduction and Sublime Frequencies. His less-known alias Alvarius B has nonetheless seen an extended panhandle of releases at least since 1994, and plays host to a string of 'characters' and sub-pseudonyms. One such 'charakter', as he calls them, is Karaoke, whose forte is covers of noir cinematic rock classics. Here we've got two dark rundowns; on the A, a dark rundown of Ennie Morricone's 'Solo Nostalgia' from the film Comandamenti per un Gangster, and on the B, a version of Indonesia's finest Koes Plus' 'Tiba-Tiba Ku Menangis', whom Bishop had already interpreted as part of the band Koes Barat. Both detail Bishop's talent as a rarely-performed alter-ego, a cosmopolite solo-entertainer.

Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton have been on a blazing nonstop run ever since they reunited the group in 2019. Confronting conspiracy theories, online addiction, and societal decay, the lead single 'Bliss' is a steady reminder of Arab Strap's multi-generational appeal - "It's about women being terrorized online; it's about cowardice and bigotry. It's about how we expose ourselves on social platforms while hiding alone at home. But you can dance to it too!" Moffat said on the press release. As the haunting melodies intertwine with Moffat's gritty regional vocals on the 15-track album, dimly lit dive bars and sketchy alleyways come to mind and not the cyberspace dystopia that many other musicians would go to. It's a unique take on a subject that needs unique takes, an explicit piece of sang prose in an age of censorship. Review: Glasgow indie pop sonic-photographers Camera Obscura have always been masters of subtlety and this sense of finesse only hears a bolstering on the new record Look To The East, Look To The West. After the sad loss of their former founding member and keyboardist Carey Lander in 2015, the group took the time out for a much-needed hiatus before reuniting for the recording of this personally redemptive full-length. Led by the soft, tambouring jangles of 'Big Love', the album's lead single, we're met with an elegiac but ultimately hopeful recollection, via its lovingly prodding lyrics ("it was a big love, she said, the kind of big love that made you easily led") and sonic resemblance of Waylon Jennings.

Review: It's been a full five years since Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds released an original full-length LP. Their last was Ghosteen, the final of three albums to complete the triptych that also included Push The Sky Away (2013) and Skeleton Tree (2016). This makes Wild God something of a special one, marking the first time Cave and company have struck out on an isolable creative limb in over a decade. Review: Nick Cave & The Bad seeds present their first album in five years, Wild God, following 2019's Ghosteen. A testament to the band's recent spell of happiness, the stylistic and emotional complexity of Wild God is reflective of the complex emotional state a songwriter can find themselves in after a period of pain and tumult. It is indeed a "complicated record" (Cave's own words), with every cameo from David Fridmann to Jonny Greenwood in tow, conjuring up gothic romantic fantasies ("he flew through the city like a prehistoric bird" and "she died in a bedsit in 1993") and candidly heartfelt instrumentation, but with a kooky edge. Though the singles released so far err on the side of convention, our inside intel indicates the presence of an overall rock-genre-bending record elsewhere, owing to a happy period of reconnection and creative synergy experienced by the band.

Review: Aussie rockers The Church embark on a time travellers' dialogue with future band Eros Zeta And The Perfumed Guitars on their eponymous new crossover album. According to the album's liner notes, "Eros Zeta and the Perfumed Guitars were formed in 2048 in Antarctic City in Antarctica," toured the post-war world incessantly during the early 2050s and were "troubled with personnel and substance abuse problems culminating in Eros Zeta's addiction to Sky." Time will tell what the latter statement means, but apparently, no grandfathers were retroactively killed in the recording of this album. Ostensibly a showcase of the latter band's music, this is apparently by no means an album's worth of Church material at all, but it uncannily shares their prolific, steamy prog ruminations to a T. It's almost as if a case of temporal identity theft has occurred. Try not to feel the secondhand deja vu; we bet you can't.

Review: Monochrome dream pop band Cigarettes After Sex release their third studio album X's, following up the pre-release 'Tejano Blue'. As romantic and wistful as ever, the album is an avowed haunt-jaunt through a series of 'slow-dance pop ballads' - no change there - albeit this time concerning the brutal reckoning with relationship breakdown and loss, personally borne by lead musician Greg Gonzalez during the recording of their prior self-titled album. Also a lover letter to Gonzalez' hometown of El Paso, Texas, the album draws on themes of the music scene and atmosphere of the city, in dialogue with a subsequent move to New York and the culture shock that followed.

Landing on its own exclusive, limited and numbered red/black splattered vinyl 12", the set is noted for being the band's first official live show, as they provided support for the Sex Pistols, while guitarist Brian James has since elaborated that while the members were paid L5 for the gig by Pistols' manager Malcolm McLaren, they were also charged L10 to use their PA system. Review: Emotional Rescue takes another trip into the twisted world of post-punk dubs, electronics and oddities here at the hands of DJ, collector and radio host Gary The Tall. The original comes from German duo and new wave innovators Die Radierer whose pop-reggae jam 'Batman' is irresistibly catchy with its low-slung beats and lazy, sun-kissed melodies. It appeared on 1983's In Hollywood and was recorded at their home studio on a Tascam 4-track cassette recorder. Gary The Tall's remix finds him teaming up with Aaron Coyles under his new alias of Exotic Gardens and the results are loopy and dubbed out to perfection.

Review: Everyone remembers the saying about slow-boiled frogs, but what actually happens when you attempt to boil one in real life? Surprise, surprise, modern science counters the aphoristic claim with a charge of falsehood; that real-life frogs do indeed tend to jump out of boiling water regardless of the time it takes to boil one. New York slowcore and shoegaze favourite DIIV's latest album Frog In Boiling Water seems to recall this mood as much, propelling us into action with the femural puissance of an amphibian's hunkers, despite the album's consistent plodding, its dourness, its steadiness, its slow boil. Naturally, in light of the boiled frog analogy's usual connotations, the album is nominally about the contradictions of late stage capitalism and overwhelming technological advance, with its sound evoking the feeling of bowling into a non-risk-assessed future, and the bittersweet sense of bliss and personal confrontation this evokes at every turn.

Review: DIIV is an indie band from Brooklyn who first started recording in 2010 together. The band is a mix of post rock, lo-li, Indie with some shoegaze elements. The band has garnered some strong success for an indie band with their last album reaching the Billboard top 200 album list. Frog In Boiling Water is their fourth album and reminds many of 90s UK bands like My Bloody Valentine and Ride. Their first single 'Brown Paper Bag' was released on the same day the new album was announced just a few months ago. The lead single has all the marks for a classic shoegaze sound that should bode well for the band with their growing following of fans. This version is released on lime green vinyl

While the band's sound draws comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and Slowdive, their lack of mainstream success can be attributed to the rise of grunge and bands like Smashing Pumpkins in the early 90s. Review: Billed as the most vital and sophisticated creation of their career yet, Fat White Family return with Forgiveness Is Yours. As if to reaffirm that forgiveness begins with forgiving oneself, the South London band's fourth album comes with limited fanfare (they hardly need it), perhaps owing to the fact that this is a record said to have pushed the band to "the limits of their very existence", entailing a consistent "will to create even when catastrophes keep happening". Forgive oneself for what, though? Torpor, apparently; from 'Bullet Of Dignity' to 'What's That You Say', this slick and suggestive indie album is a testament to finding the correct harmony in chaos, and waking up from our half-dazes to find an active truth.

Review: Portishead's incredibly gifted lead singer Beth Gibbons is back with a solo album which appears like a bolt from the blue on Domino. As it transpires, Lives Outgrown has been ruminating for some time as Gibbons reflects on the passage of time, working closely with James Ford (of Simian Mobile Disco fame) and Talk Talk's Lee Harris to develop a distinct, gently psychedelic art rock-meets indie pop sound. Throughout, the album is guided by Gibbons' distinctive approach to songwriting, sounding like a natural cousin to her work in Portishead or her earlier solo album Out Of Season, while also offering something beguiling fresh and unsurprisingly brilliant. Review: Goat Girl proffer their very latest album Below The Waste through their historic confidants Rough Trade. The band's latest incarnation as Lottie Pendlebury, Holly Mullineaux, and Rosy Jones hear them joined by modern indie production favourite John Spud Murphy for a darker, more slow-brooding foray into their hircine sound than ever before. Mainly recorded and produced at Hellfire Studios in the on-side shadow of the infamous Irish nightclub Hellfire, Below The Waste is an apt exploration of the group's underbelly to match, exploring an increased sense of "resolution, honesty and authenticity" in relationships, with lead singer Lottie Pendlebury letting on that this was an album on which they'd gone 'below the surface' where the most interesting parts of ourselves tend to be suppressed.

Review: The ongoing success of the musical showcasing his work, the terrific (and very Sheffield-centric) Standing At The Sky's Edge, has done much to remind listeners of Richard Hawley's qualities as a songwriter. He's genuinely one of Britain's best of the last few decades, though the varied ways in which those are presented has not always gone down well with listeners. On In This City They Call You Love - another reference to beloved Sheffield - Hawley returns to the smooth, string-laden sound which marked out his most commercially successful album, Coles Corner. His voice - deep, rich and at this point bordering iconic - naturally takes centre stage on a set packed with touching and thoughtful ballads. It's a winner, but then the majority of his albums are.

Review: Back in 2019, Emotional Rescue began a series where it licensed some all-time favourites, remastered them and pressed them up with new remixes by modern producers. It now draws to a close after many fine instalments with early 80s band The Impossible Dreamers. Their cult 'Spin' arrives here with an epic nine-minute extended reversion that is heavy on the dub and percussion and also an even more dubcentric reprise from regular label artist Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys and Noid fame, her under his NAD guise. There is plenty of raw and raucous rhythm to this 12" that will enliven any dancefloor and round out this series in style.

Review: South African Warrick Sony is a ground breaking composer who was behind the Kalahari Surfers project which now gets a vital spotlight courtesy of Emotional Rescue. This compilation shows how effortlessly eclectic his sound was - from jive rhythms to jazz, tabla to political speeches and much more in between. A Hindu pacifist who was once conscripted into the South African Defense Force, he founded this group as a way out getting his ides out there, calling on other musicians as and when he needed them. It was the first radical white anti-apartheid pop in South Africa and as this vital collection shows it explored polyrhythms, slow motorik, dub sound collage and even a goofy cover of Nancy Sinatra.

Review: Celebrating its 20th birthday, British alt-rock group Keane's 'Hopes and Fears' was a transcendental piece of that iconic phase of Britrock/pop. The opening piano chords of 'Somewhere Only We Know' have become one of the most recognisable in the genre, if not for the alarming amount of emotional acoustic covers. It's not like you can't understand the popularity though, frontman Tom Chaplin's voice contains a quietly powerful vulnerability - a stubborn candle in a storm. Far from a one-trick pony, 'Everybody's Changing' is a home run of a track - for me probably one of the most nostalgic songs ever (Showing my age slightly...) Keane is a timeless class act, one of those bands you are guaranteed to love but not know the name of, for whatever reason. In this updated vinyl package, includes two discs with stunning hues of blue, the artwork has similarly been updated slightly. Disc 2 contains a trove of b-sides and rare tracks sure to get even the most diehard fan going.

Review: A Dream Is All We Know is the fifth studio album by New York's The Lemon Twigs and their second for the strong indie label, Captured Tracks. There have been two preceding singles for the album - the euphoric power pop single 'My Golden Years' and the ecstatic 60s sounding 'They Don't Know How to Fall in Place' - both of whihc draw a lot of comparisons to legendary 60s bands, but this album, released on ice cream coloured vinyl, still has a persoanlity all of its own too.
