Review: It's no secret to anyone who has done their homework on US alternative rock of the early 90s, and specifically East Coast alternative rock, that Galaxie 500 should have been much bigger. Nevertheless, they remain one of the most under-appreciated and overlooked bands of their era, a bolt of beautiful but raucous indie guitar stuff that only lasted four short years, and three albums, but really was something special.

This reissue of their live album, a recording of the final show of their last European tour, certainly reflects this point. Seeming to call on influences from relatively disparate sub-genres of the day - the end of post punk, bloody-nosed rock and, in many ways, something along the lines of what was happening thousands of miles away in Manchester at the time, it's a soaring stunner that has as much stadium drive (the epic 'Fourth of July') as it does woozy and weird experimentation ('Spook').

Review: Batongo Ditongo's version of the overlooked Mano Negra masterpiece was previously released in 2017 as part of a small uncredited vinyl run. This is a remastered version with a better sounding vinyl pressing.

Expanded 25th Anniversary Edition
Review: 25 years is an awful amount of time when you really think about it. Certainly more than long enough for Elliott Smith's 'Expanded' to make it into the list of revered contemporary classics among cult musos. Looking back now, the mid-1990s seem like a lifetime ago, but the stunning guitar work, deeply personal and poignant songwriting that defined his landmark self-titled sophomore solo LP hasn't waned one bit.

Occupying a place that's perhaps somewhere between Alex Chilton and acoustic grunge, iconic tracks like 'Needle In The Hay' can't help but raise hairs on arms, even if you don't remember its quietly powerful impact when it first landed. 'Single File' still has that air of wonder and eccentricity to its lilting guitars, 'The White Lady Loves You More's meditative qualities are just as gradually awesome and the bonus disc - Smith's first ever solo live performance, recorded in 1994 - lays bare the late-artist's raw talent.

Review: The world moves quickly, and if you don't stop to reflect once in a while it's easy to lose sight of what's important - Field Music's sort-of-self-titled third album, Field Music (Measure), is certainly one of the important things. A decade young in 2010, it remains a crowning achievement, a sizeable ode to modern rock history, or at least from the 1970s onwards, which, thanks to the super-talents of the brothers Peter and David Brewis, sounds less like a pastiche and more a strong argument in favour for evolutionary music theory.

There are simply so many possible reference points across this 20 track masterpiece they become meaningless - it's a tapestry as original as it is born from everything worthwhile that has come before. Or a good chunk of it. Led Zeppelin, Talk Talk, XTC, Kate Bush, at times proggy, in other moments funk-driven, it seamlessly reels off new wave and balladry alike and should be considered a masterpiece.

La Yarara
La Yarara (white vinyl LP)

Review: Based in London, UK, but originally hailing from Argentina, Malena Zavala is nothing if not disinterested in picking a style and sticking with it. Following on from her 2018 debut album, 'Aliso', 'La Yarara' again sees her combining some bold and often disparate genres, and playing with language - Spanish and English - to dazzling effect. The result being a record that's devastatingly effective and equally original. 'What If I' is a positive, upbeat and hypnotic pop lullaby. 'Compay' is saturated in a bluesy atmosphere, melding this with downtempo electronica. 'I'm Leaving Home' is a lackadaisical, whispered slice of reflective chill out. The title track is South American exoticism, canned and then opened on record. A huge talent diving deeper into sonic possibilities, and following what sounds good rather than familiar.

Bonanza Plan
Review: Barringtone's sound is a unique combination of disparate elements. They make full use of the complex arrangements and ever-changing time signatures most commonly associated with rock of the math and even prog varieties, but then execute said arrangements with a spartan, frills-free rawness that is nearly entirely restricted to raw guitar, bass and drums, with only the occasional flourish of synth thrown into the mix.

It's an intoxicating meeting of methods, further enhanced by the band's undoubted ability to pen a tune that sticks in the mind, even if they then send it into the musical blender to be reshaped and rebuilt in an altogether stranger image. Featuring former singles such as 'Feverhead' and 'Dreamboyz' in all their weirdpop glory, rubbing shoulders with a host of previously unreleased instrumental and vocal-led efforts, the Barringtone debut album has been a long time coming - but worth every minute of the wait.
