Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Risk Assessment - "I Don't Understand" (5:57)
Saison - "The Riff" (6:21)
Natasha Kitty Katt - "Plenty Good" (6:47)
Review: Previous offerings on No Fuss have featured the likes of Saison, Crispin J. Glover and Dean Zepherin, and now the upfront house label brings together another selection of party heaters from a range of producers. Saison makes a welcome return with the feisty "Till The Day I Die", a richly produced vocal jam with plenty of uptempo shuffle in the drums. Risk Assessment lean on the keys to create a melodic mood on "I Don't Understand" and then Saison does it again with the bright and breezy "The Riff". That leaves it to Natasha Kitty Katt to finish things up with the heavy funking disco licks of "Plenty Good" - a get-down cut for all seasons.

Set Fire To Me (Vick Re Imagined Time Traveler version)
There It Is (feat D Millz/Kai Alce vocal remix)
Set Fire To Me (Vick beats N Life vinyl mix)
Review: Back in 2020, Vick Lavender unveiled his 'Time Traveller Mix' of 'Set Fire To Me', a superb cover of Willie Colon's Latin classic of the same name. It never appeared on wax at the time - it was, sadly for vinyl enthusiasts, digital-only - so this 12" is sure to be in demand. Naturally, it kicks off with that fine re-imagining - a brilliant blend of layered Latin percussion, intergalactic electronics, sunset-ready chords, jammed-out Rhodes motifs and rolling deep house grooves. This time round, he's also added a more stripped-back, drum-heavy version (the 'Beats N Life Vinyl Mix'), while the EP also boasts another previously digital-only treat: Kai Alce's deep house-meets-broken beat tweak of D Millz collaboration 'There It Is'. In a word: essential!

Love You More (Mr G's Endlessly In Love dub)
Review: Amsterdam's Makez bring their old school unfused house sounds to Adeen Records in collaboration with Balance Alliance on this fresh new 12" which also features a remix from UK mainstay Mr G. 'Do It' brings super smooth chords and a prickly deep house beat that will get any floor going. Then comes 'Close 2 Us' which is even better - lush and lazy chords are draped over pent-up deep house dynamics with gorgeous vocal coos and jazzy keys also bring extra heart and heat to the mix. 'Beat Of Life' is a more busy percussive sound and then comes 'Love You More' as remixed by the don Mr G who brings his signature smokiness and basement house vibes.

Review: Random Factor's 'On The Air' EP is a hugely sought-after classic by those who know. It came on Ralph Lawson's ever-reliable 20/20 Vision and now, as it turns 25 years old, he has decided it is the right time to get it remastered and reissued. 'On The Air' is first up on this fine EP from Carl Finlow and it has serene synths that bring to mind Detroit techno soul over pulsing bass and slick drums. 'Lockdown' has a raw vocoder vocal over punchy drums and twitchy synth stabs and 'Undercurrent' is another weapon that has more than withstood the test of time as it bumps along on funky drums and is overlaid with more playful synth patterns. 'Disconnect' is a crunchy and 8-bit closer with pixelated synths and screwy acid lines. Superb.

Review: Deep house producer Shuya Okino shows his class once more on another tasteful outing, this time via the Extra Freedom/Village Again labels out of Japan. For this one he revisits his 2011 album Destiny which was made with help from the Japanese funk, boogie and jazz-funk outfit Root Soul and replays and remakes the tunes. The originals become more disco-leaning and horn lead jams here with Okino's warm, rubbery basslines, P-funk synths, loose live beats and cute keys. The result is an album that sounds like Earth, Wind & Fire making modern soul and it will improve your life no end.

Freddy Fresh - "5_HP_D"
Review: The brand new Hyperdrive label kicks off with a mix of the old and the new - some tracks made recently, some that date back to the 90s, all of them top quality. Liquid Earth opens up with the spaced-out synths and electronic house sounds of '1_HP_D' then Art Of The State gets a little more tranced out and cosmic on '2_HP_D'. Dan Piu's '3_HP_D' is a tech house exploration with wispy sci-fi leads and a playful rhythm then Luis Malon & Seb G combine for the turbo-charged tech of '4_HP_D.' The legendary Freddy Fresh closes down with a high-speed sound on '5_HP_D.' Says the label, "Hyperdrive is dedicated to preserving the rich history of electronic music," and on this evidence, it will do so expertly.

'808 The Bassqueen' is a truly mesmerising sonic journey that pushes the boundaries of electronic music with Villalobos's trademark blend of minimal techno and experimental soundscapes. Review: Broken beat hero Kaidi Tatham steps forth with the first in a series of all-star remix albums of the Reel People Music back catalogue. Over an impressive ten tracks, Tatham sashays between syrupy soul slo-jams, virtuosic broken beat trips, almost UK funky-esque live jams, and acoustic boom bap beats. Percies include the sweeter-than-molasses opening flip of Sebb Junior's 'All My Life', his sassy, stripped-back version of Daz-I-Kue and Hadiya George's 'Pedigree' and a dazzlingly technical re-run of the Monkey Brothers' 'Losin my Head.' With this anthology, Tatham proves that London's broken beat scene continues to flourish, and his boundary-hopping style is as relevant as ever.

Review: The Last Resort: Balearic At The End Of Time is a collection of nu-Balearic sounds from plenty of established names in the game as well as some new and rising talents via Portuguese label Secrets Of Sound. Lord Of The Isles offers an early standout with 'Neptune's Staircase' which has a new age feel as soft synth sequins shimmer up amongst the clouds, Jura Soundsystem brings some gently persuasive rhythms to the fore on their impossibly light and airy 'Flotsam & Jetsam' and Leeds-based Joe Morris layers up loopy late night whispers with dubby currents on 'The New Dawn Will Come.' A soothing collection for overactive minds.

That draw on everything he has done before to send you out to sea on gentle waves of shining synth goodness, downtempo bliss and dreamy, chubby, soft focus drums. Review: Three is the long-awaited twelfth studio album by electronica titan Four Tet, following a long extended 'wildcard era' characterised by legal battles (well, one) and unlikely, curveball stints with fellow juggernauts Skrillex and Fred Again. But despite this judgment, Three hears Kieran Hebden return to his earliest forms, with the semi-eponymous 'Three Drums' recalling his earliest outcroppings emergent from his Fridge days, via slow, crisp breaks and serene string pads. 'Loved', similarly, evokes a 90s hip-hop, dare say Britcore fascination, melded with warmingly serene analogue pulsations, underlaid.

Review: Marius Circus is well known and loved for a signature analogue sound and once again that is laid out for us all to enjoy here on a new EP that comes with a remix from men of the moment Jazxing. First up is the deep, unhurried and dubbed out 'Lost On A Path To Nowhere,' a subtle late-night sound with wispy synths and a muted bassline that grows ever more prominent. The Jazxing Pathfinder remix is more tropical and steamy, and on the flip 'No Way Home' douses you in more blissed-out chords before the downbeat boogie of 'Space Crumbs Trail'. This is yet more essential summer goodness from Is It Balearic.

Review: Few labels do minimal as well as Trelik and in terms of artists, Edwards is also as good as they come right now. This perfect pairing opens up with the deeply alluring 'Time' with its woozy pads and smeared chords over warm and rubbery drums. It's a hypnagogic affair then 'Vacuum Tube' has a more menacing air thanks to the wispy and unsettling synth details and clunky hooks. 'Watch Out' brings a more spangled and rubbery rhythm that has colourful details peeling off the beats and last of all, 'Stream' ups the ante with some thudding deep house and widescreen ambient synth work.

Review: Label boss El Prevost makes a welcome return to No Speakers after it's been on something of a break. Thankfully the quality levels remain high here as he kicks off with 'Catastrophizing', a brilliantly bass-heavy cut with broken beats to make you sweat. On the flip, 'Landing' has a more inward sense of reflection with its fizzing synths and deep space atmospheres making an indelible mark. Last of all, the magic of Detroit looms large with a superb remix by Motor City mainstay Kyle Hall. His version of 'Landing' brings some jazzy melodic vibes and one of his trademark deep house and bumping grooves. This is another essential 12" from No Speakers.

Either way, the label's latest EP features versions of some seriously hard to find treats, starting with a fine 'extended disco instrumental' of Sanctuary's 'Disconnect', a fine disco-boogie jam from 1980. They then deliver a (we think) previously unreleased 'extended disco' mix of Willie J & Co's killer 1976 disco-funk gem 'Boogie With Your Baby'. On the B-side we're treated to two takes on the mysterious 'Familiar Time and Place' by Uknown Tapes: a 'Chicago Mix' which sounds like late 80s Windy City acid house smothered in spacey deep house chords and intergalactic electronics and the mid-80s techno-tinged 'Detroit Mix'.

Review: Swiss producer and DJ Lea Lisa gathers together some of her favorite tracks to play out with in a double pack compilation for Favorite Recordings. As you might be able to tell from some of the artists and tracks on here, Lea likes her house music deep, tracky, sometimes soulful and verging on proper techno. Featured here are key tracks like 'Ekeyz' from Pure Science, the club mix of 'Be There' by Kerri Chandler and 'Blax Thanxs' by Abacus. One very desirable addition is the early 90s gem 'Emotional' by Think. This very strong gathering of deep house tracks may be one of the best this year. Act quick and grab a copy.

Review: Italian tech house DJ and producer Bakked is back on the case with another sure shot for his Outban label. Bakked's focus lies on seedy, sinewy tech house informed by Italo and Giallo soundtracks, so there's plenty of ghoulish soundtrack poise and throbbing arp action on the likes of 'Almost Machine'. The synths are thick and gloopy, the drums boxy and brash, and there's all the peaks and troughs you could wish for from a modern dancefloor filler, making this the perfect demonstration of future-past freakery. Look out for the acid flex on 'Abitudine' and the slow tempo sleaze of 'Channel8', which will get the chugger crowd hot under the collar.

Review: Argentina producer Juaan (Juan Fernandez) has gotten a lot of hype recently for his first handful of first releases. And from the sounds of his latest, he is living up to the hype and then some! The Placer EP is the first EP for the American Sarah Tonin records. Juaan's ability to create some killer electro, breaks and techno is evident right from the first sample of title track. His ability to take the recipe for early 90s and spin them into something futuristic again, is his calling card. It's really hard to tell what period these tracks are from. And to those in techno that means they have that staying timeless power that they look for in picking music. The energy in all these tracks is great for the dancefloor as well. Definitely music to make you dance. Hats off to Juann for being some unique and creating music that pushes the boundaries.

Review: After a surprise sojourn last year as Sato, an alias he used to explore ambient and dub techno territory, Satoshi Tomiie has reverted to his given name for solo album number five - a thin return given he made his 12" debut way back in 1989. The New York-based Japanese great is in fine form from the start, effortlessly sashaying between hypnotic deep tech-house (the eyes-closed, early morning excellence of 'You Are Here'), spaced-out dub-house ('Number 1'), chunky-but-dubby deep house of the kind that his friend Francois K would love ('Magic Hour'), acid-flecked minimalism ('Blast'), vintage-sounding dub techno ('A52', 'Meditation in an Emergency'), locked-in soundscape house (the shuffling and yearning 'Phase Space') and sub-heavy ambient dub ('Fast Track').

Review: 24 years into his career as Lawrence, Peter M Kersten continues to deliver devilishly deep house workouts that somehow manage to be both effortlessly immersive and percussively propulsive. There's plenty of examples of this trademark style on the Gravity Hill EP, which marks his return to Smalleville after a nine-year absence. Check first the title track, where soft-focus pads, poignant piano motifs and deep bass ride a rock-solid house groove, before turning your attention to the dusty, opaque, slowly unfurling dancefloor beauty of 'Beaver'. Kersten opts for a warmer, drowsier and more hypnotic deep house sound in the similarly gorgeous 'The Swamp', before he doffs a cap to Green and Brown Album-era Orbital via the looped intergalactic synth sounds, analogue synth-bass and swinging house beats of 'Stargazer'.

Review: Way back in 1993, when his career was still in its infancy, Chicago great Roy Davis Jr donned an alternative alias, The Believers, and delivered a 12" on Strictly Rhythm: 'Who Dares To Believe In Me?' It was something of a club smash, with Ministry of Sound issuing it in the UK a year later with a swathe of new mixes. This Groovin' Records reissue boasts a trio of mixes from the original U.S 12". On the A-side you'll find the original mix, a warm, spine-tingling slab of piano-rich New York style house topped off by snaking, delay-laden saxophone lines and an inspirational spoken word vocal courtesy of Davis. Over on the reverse, Davis' own 'Just Living High Mix' - a breezier, jazzier and more colourful affair - is followed by Mind Readers' tougher, chunkier and heavier revision, which is in effect a proper dancefloor dub.

Review: A choice selection of four deep. sultry floorfillers from four different artists across this new 12" from 124 Recordings. 'Come To Me' by Chris Fry heads up the selection with sturdy four-to-the-floor foundations hinting a original US garage vibes, all embellished with classy, oozing strings and a stickier-than-gum vocal refrain. Heat Alliance's '74 Streets' is a tad slower and dubbier and as its title suggests, revels in its rude funk and sparkly disco influences processed through some subtly modern filtering action. 'Amsterdam' from Kit Mason combines tripper FX with an irresistible, chunky groove, reminiscent of the soulful delirium of Felix da Housecat's finer moments, while 'Bit Mania' by Nicola Brusegan draws proceedings to a close with a celebratory, summer-slanted slice of uplift built around a nifty 70s-style funky guitar lick. Lots of variety, but everything here is going to get feet headed towards the dancefloor without doubt.

For this one she joins forces with New York's master of the deep Fred P for a superb new single. 'Chateau Dance' is marbled with spiritual pads and smoky jazz leads as muttered vocals pan about the mix over deep but gentle broken drum loops. Dutch titan Steve Rachmad remixes twice - first with some warming machine soul and a little more drive, and then with a twitcher sense of energy and more potent drums. A truly tasteful package.

He takes things back to basics here with some club rocking but still deft and stylish club tools. 'Shire' opens up with spinning hi-hats and solid, thudding kick run though with some bleeping sci-fi synths. On the flip is the more wonky and unhinged 'Aferrafters' with vocal fragments and warped synths running through the slick house drums. Two essential jams for DJs and dancers alike from the cultured Frenchman.

Here he debuts on Mister Bear Records, a new imprint out of Berlin. First up is 'Am Forplay', a mid-tempo roller with heady chords slowly moving through the scales next to smoky vocal coos. 'For Me' is a more edgy and energetic sound with wispy pads darting about like fireflies over more percussive, tech-leaning drums. Last but not least is our standout - 'Sweet Love' (dub) with its delightful vocal and shuffling, cuddly deep house drums soon hypnotising you.

Review: French producer Jerome Barresi assumes his Robert's Diary Palais here for a new outing on Is It Balearic that offers something a little adjacent to the norm. Opener 'Dinky Bird' is a mix of tender keys and hand claps with a soulful vocal sample that reminds of early-era Moby. Norse mainstay Bjorn Torske appears then to remix and brings some scuttling percussive sounds and watery effects over four-four drums. 'Six O Six' is a yearning dub cut packed with wild FX and 'KXP' is a zoned-out and tinny retro-future nu-disco cut that is a perfect B-side.

What's on offer appears to be a mixture of sought-after cuts from his archives and previously unreleased material. In the former category you'll find 'Love Inside (Detroit Dub)', a soul-soaked chunk of warming and spacey Motor City deep house from 2002 and the subtly Latin-tinged, Ron Trent-style melodious warmth of 2009 cut 'Higher'. Elsewhere, 'Chari' is a gorgeous chunk of summery, sun-soaked deep house positivity rich in colourful chords and kaleidoscopic lead lines, while 'Mocasays' offers a near perfect blend of raw, tech-tinged grooves, sustained chords and sparkling piano riffs.

This one has club hit written all over it once more and previous tunes of his have been much the same with big plays from the likes of Gilles Peterson, Palms Trax and Hunee. The title track opens up with an ascending lead synth line and old school Chicago house drums. 'Bb' then brings a little infectious garage skip to the dancefloor and on the flip, 'The Function' pairs it back to deft drum loops and smeared pads and an infectious rhythm. 'Backwaters' closes down with some dubby out and float beats run through with fuzzy dub chords and some molten synth melodies.

Based out of the New York scene on the East Coast it had a distinctive 90s deep house sound which DJ Steaw now taps into but with his own twist. His grooves are jacked up and analogue, densely packed but high on warmth and soul. 'Take It There' is a prickly opener and 'Seascape' then brings some acid. 'Close To U' has a more low-slung groove that is peppered with raw claps and last of all, 'Exotica' brings some cosmic synth work to crisp, funked-up and electro-tinged rhythms.

'Mother' is as deep as house music gets and is steeped in US traditions and smoky basement atmospheres with candle-lit chords and fragments of soulful vocals. 'Father' then rides on bumpy drums but swirling Rhodes and dusty hits keep it pure vibes. 'Epoch Ten' exhibits a premier example of the quality ambient techno the label has released in recent years. Fans of As One, FBA, Stasis and Sensurreal are sure to gravitate toward this track in particular. The 90s Detroit vibe is here in many respects. 'Ne Plus Ultra' and 'Reverie' are perfect tributes to the lineage there. The robot funk in 'Milestone' is particularly exciting with this early 90s styled foray into UK techno while 'Parallax' gives off a heavy Innovator and early Warp label impressions. If you are a fan of ambient techno then this is a quick and easy pickup.

Review: UK veteran producer Nail Tolliday is a very well-respected name in electronic music since the early 90s, even cropping up on one of the earliest Warp album releases, DIY's Strictly 4 Groovers in 1993 . After some years working on other music-related projects, the past ten years he has made a return to producing with a busy output of great dance music. Rhythm By Nature is a new German label and attracting Nail for their first release is a great sign of a strong label to follow. The 'Shake Two' EP's A-Side 'Thoughts' is just the type of track Nail is known for - a proper techno beat that has elements of house and generally adds a timeless melodic element to differentiate it from just being house or techno, even delving as far as to be ambient techno. Nail always brings a great tribal rhythm to his productions that set them apart from the crowd. 'Ribs' on the second side also shows how good Nail does with vocals on his tracks. He has a knack of knowing what works on the dancefloor. The SaPu dub mix adds a nice deeper alternative version to round out this strong record. If you like 90s UK techno like Mark Ambrose, Timewriter, Circulation or End Recordings as much as we do then this is a blind pick up.

As usual, what's on offer brilliantly blends deep house rhythms and textures with the kind of more spacey and dubbed-out elements more often heard in Detroit techno and hypnotic tech-house. A-side 'The Sound Exchange' is particularly potent, with Peterkin wrapping a typically tough-but-tactile groove in ghostly chords, hand percussion hits and echoing synth riffs. Over on side B, 'The Sonic Tour' is a brighter and more colourful riff on a similar sonic blueprint - albeit with deeper, heavier sub-bass and sustained synth strings - while 'The Kingdom' pairs a thickset groove with sweeping strings and twinkling pianos.

'Checkpoint' opens with the dusty drum shuffles and bulbous bass, then 'The Going Is Rough' is a little more soulful and sweet with its rolling basslines and silky pads. 'Beat 93' closes down with a seriously OG garage sound that takes you back to the mid-90s.

Georgie Porgy
Paradise
Review: FR is next up on the Treasure Series label which started off so strongly, then went quiet for a while, then returned in December with some superb sounds from this same artist. This new outing is a tasteful two-tracker that starts with 'Georgie Porgy', which is a slow-motion Balearic jam lit up by some busy keys and a steamy vocal coo. It's a great one for building an early evening vibe, while 'Paradise' on the flip is blissed-out deep house with the one and only Sade adding the romance and soul.

Review: Brazilian producer Zopelar is a real wizard when at work in the studio. He has done disco-tinged full lengths, synth-laced house sounds, deeper than deep grooves and now steps up to Sudd Wax with another brilliantly musical EP. It opens with the shimmering pads and free-flowing keys of 'Papaia' which then gets a Byron The Aquarius Jazz Twist mix that cuts even more free and gets even more cosmic. 'Jazz Class' is a funky one with golden chords and astral pads and the flip brings three more house gems laced up with the sort of meaningful melodies you don't often hear in this genre.

Review: Blur Records brings some eclectic magic to its next release and it's one that gets the New Year underway in essential fashion. Venerated Russian DJ and producer Scruscru is behind the beats and goes deep into everything from disco to jazz, starting with 'Alright, Alright' which is a bust of disco goodness with lively bass. Things get slow and sensuous with 'Twilight Voyage' which comes with a touch of nostalgia then Dwaal features on 'Breezy Noon' and blends downtempo bossa and Afro rhythms. More slow disco delights come from 'Nostalji' with Jehan and then 'Kno 2morrow' gets jazzy with some classy melodies to close things down.

Review: Sushitech is back with another of its sublime vinyl-only projects and this one focuses on the work of Dexter. There will be three 12"s in all that draw together some of the producer's finest moments. He is a truly cult figure amongst those who know and he served up a fresh take on tech, acid, dub and house between 1997 and 2004 when these tracks were first made - if you can find any of those original records prepare to pay loads for them, or else dive into Past Moves I. It has a brace of slick, tightly programmed cuts underpinned by rolling pads with lovely lo-fi pads up top. Heady stuff.

Review: Mosaic main man and peerless UK dub techno titan Steve O'Sullivan has paired off against Fletcher for this latest heavyweight 12". As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. It's a classic amongst many on this label. 'With That' is another tight, compelling and tech tinged dub roller with real bite and drive, and 'Treading Water' then blisses you out with its liquid chords and sense of endless infinite groove.

Review: Belgian DJ and producer Gratts have joined forces with London-based vocalist Mr. Beale to follow up on to success of their well-received 'Sun Circles' release last year. Here, on the sublime 'Submerge Me', they are in fine form once more with a brooding sound that features the uniquely mesmerising mantras of Beale and plenty of raw, compelling and percussive grooves that full lock you in and get you going. Versatile Records' own Gilb'r then steps up on the flip and manages to take things even deeper with some fine liquid dub excursions to complete a top 7"
