  3. Last Chance Saloon
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Trelik reach into their recent archives with a much needed repress of Whalesong, the label's 2011 debut from UK producer OCH. With a compulsive passion for the dying art of crate-digging combined with a love for modern synthesis techniques the now Sweden based OCH manages to put together a 12" that could easily be described as psychedelic Chicago. "Whalesong" is a pulsating floor work-out which references the US greats whilst building an emotive sub-aqua soundscape. "Blind is The Wind" follows with a sneaky chord driven spoken interlude which creates an air of tension before climaxing into "Last Chance Saloon".

Retro Future EP

  1. Pickled
  2. Out Of Time
  3. Groove Breakfast
  4. In The Loft
Review: You would expect an EP titled "Retro-Future" to do a good job in uniting sounds from dance music's past and present. Naturally, Kepler's does just that on his first Sukhumvit release, opening with a hot-to-trot workout that adds warehouse-ready, turn-of-the-90s acid bass and glassy-eyed electronic riffs to smooth and shuffling tech-house drums ("Pickled"). He continues the glassy-eyed fun on the more squelchy, vintage MK-influenced bustle of "Out of Time" and "Groove Breakfast", which sounds like it could have been recorded at any time since 1990 (for the record, it also boasts some lovely piano stabs). Arguably best of all, though, is closing cut "In The Loft", which sits somewhere between '90s Italian house and organ-rich New Jersey garage.

Review: The ever-charitable Needs project continues apace with another stunning cast of characters offering up their dancefloor creations to help a good cause - the environmentally-focused Cool Earth NGO. On this 12", Eris Drew delivers the uplifting breakbeat celebration of "See You In Snow", while Edward takes things deeper with the tripped out minimal house groove of "Mind Loop". D. Tiffany brings a particularly crafty approach to her own drum funk science on "Sun Trip" and Henry Hyde cools things down with the mellow, new age 2 step stylings of "Every Day's A Good Day For A Swim."

Review: Previous offerings on No Fuss have featured the likes of Saison, Crispin J. Glover and Dean Zepherin, and now the upfront house label brings together another selection of party heaters from a range of producers. Saison makes a welcome return with the feisty "Till The Day I Die", a richly produced vocal jam with plenty of uptempo shuffle in the drums. Risk Assessment lean on the keys to create a melodic mood on "I Don't Understand" and then Saison does it again with the bright and breezy "The Riff". That leaves it to Natasha Kitty Katt to finish things up with the heavy funking disco licks of "Plenty Good" - a get-down cut for all seasons.

Review: Mixing Engineer, DJ and producer Yossi Amoyal is the man behind Sushitech Records. The label turned 15 years old in 2020 and to celebrate this milestone Yossi has compiled Fluere across four discs (plus an extended Part V - Fatum). The compilation shares some of his story through the records that inspired him and continue to do so. The tracks mark more than two decades of buying records. Starting in a time when new music had to be actively sought out and ending with the abundance of new releases available online today. Fluere marks the end of a chapter and is a very personal collection featuring forgotten tracks remastered for today next to exclusive and unreleased music. As the name Fluere would suggest, the tracks it contains are the glue that hold a set together. They are special, hypnotic, mood setters from artists who specialise in subtlety, from Two Lone Swordsmen and Baby Ford to Steve O Sullivan and Mathew Jonson. Each part of the compilation tells its own story, both through the music on offer and with an exclusive insert written by Yossi himself. The tracks themselves represent over three decades of moving dance floors. Starting with Mark Broom's Gira first released in 1995 and right up to Brawther's Serpent, produced in 2020, Fluere creates its own unique journey through this period of dance music history.

Review: Dutch producer Chris Stussy has been seriously busy in the past couple of years dropping slick and slender tech house on labels like Eastenderz, Rutilance, Djebali and Moscow Records. Now he appears on Constant Sound with yet more sophisticated dancefloor gold. "Take A Leap Of Faith" leads the charge with a driving yet delectably dubbed out take on peak time tech house, peppered with vocal slices and a cheeky acid rub. Relic offers up a remix that straps a sharp, swinging garage house beat to the track with excellent results. "Point Loma" is a funky workout with some cracking slap bass hits, and "Limerence" gets a little quirky without losing that immersive atmosphere of the lead track.

INNATE 004
  1. Aroy Dee - "Leegte"
  2. Gilbert - "Furthest Planet"
  3. Jonski - "Venusian Surface"
  4. DJ Guy - "Aphelion Orbit"
Review: The fourth multi-artist EP from blog-turned-record label Innate takes the imprint's inherently warm and far-sighted sound into new intergalactic directions. Offering a quartet of cuts from established producers and rising stars, all inspired by dreams of cross-cosmic travel and the alluring weightlessness of deep space. 004 explores the love of stargazing electronics in much greater deapth.

The A-side is all about melodious and spacey electro with Dutch legend Aroy Dee making a rare appearance away from his acclaimed M>O>S Recordings label. "Leegte" A1 is impressively immersive, cloaking a jaunty bassline and lo-fi beats in sumptuous aural textures and glassy-eyed chords. Accompanied by Innate label regular Gilbert, "Furthest Planet" A2 is a deep roller whose lilting lead lines, shimmering electronics and tumbling acid lines are little less than life-affirming.

On side B, the sound subtly shifts towards the multi-coloured, sci-fi shimmer of techno. Newcomer Jonski, (aka Bristol electro producer Zobol) drops "Venusian Surface" B1 - a classic interstellar jam full of vivid chords, echoing synth squiggles and alluring leads that rise above a classic tech-funk bassline. Last but not least, effervescent Welshman DJ Guy (Unthank/Other World Music) slams down an energetic techno stomper in "Aphelion Orbit": boasting brilliantly breathless drum programming, illuminated by the celestial shimmer of accompanying chords. A perfect conclusion to Innate's most action-packed release to date.

  4. ManooZ - "Tinted Windows" (6:05)
Review: STRICTR Records is a brand new imprint from Aix-En-Provence in France. This is the label's debut outing, and contains four alluring tracks for discerning deep house DJs. Matthieu Fauborg's epic opener - the tactile, melodious, dreamy and life-affirming "Please Stay", which more than justifies its 10-minute duration - feels like a statement of intent, while Dub Striker's "Mood" recalls classic New York and New Jersey bumpers of old. On the flip, Harrison BDP gets busy with Syclops style synth bass, floatation tank chords and shuffling percussion on "Decompression", before Manooz goes ultra-deep on the dusty and woozy "Tinted Windows". A very fine debut, all told.

Review: The latest drop on Ornate sees Neil Tolliday's Nail project metamorphose into Sentipede. His illustrious track record in UK house and techno has touched on all kinds of ventures since the DIY days, and now he's presenting something very special indeed for Ornate. The vibe on these tracks is more taut and techy, with "313151" opening proceedings on a bubbling bed of acid before the rubbery monosynth jack of "44151" on the B side. Keeping things locked into this nervy strain of warehouse tackle, "3131154" finishes the record off with some even more audacious 303 lines that will dig right into your synapses and give 'em a twist, in the nicest possible way of course.

These four pearlers will be thoroughly useful tools in your utility belt, leading in with the singalong hook of "Only You Baby" which sports a healthy dose of boogie synth work. "You" by way of contrast is a strictly organic funker looped up to perfection. Review: Mysticisms delves into the spiritual realm with the archival recordings of London based Japanese duo, Afrobuddha to present their highly sought music to date, in Obame and Zone, on one EP.
With copies of their debut releases now selling for dizzying prices, a chance to work with label friend Kay Suzuki attained. With his respected Time Capsule label releasing a stream of amazing world music inspired reissues, his project with Koichi Sakai is revisited and reborn.
Released as a celebration of the spiritual affinity felt with the African and Afro-Caribbean music community, enter 'Obame'; a collaboration with the Kakatsitsi Drummers - pioneering percussionists of the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana. Combining traditional drumming with flutes, xylophone and folkloric chants, Suzuki and Sakai's art and philosophy of rhythm via house, disco, afrobeat and reggae, underpins this offering to stunning effect.
'Zone' follows. A spiritual essence of London's vibrant multi-cultural society, the track fuses intoxicating raw percussion. Featuring Ghanaian master drummer Afla Sackey's thundering congas and djembe on a 3/4 signature of polyrhythm beats, repetitive chants and deep analogue synths, this is a stripped backed journey into drum dub of space-bending delays and reverb effects.

This is the first of them and, in typically matter-or-fact fashion, features three more undulating, funk-fuelled tech-house jams named after letters of the alphabet. They set the tone with lead cut "H", a fluid, loose-limbed affair that features an attractive mix of bouncy tech-house drums, squelchy bass, hazy vocal samples, tipsy chords and chiming melodies. Over on side B, they first wrap creepy lead lines and clandestine chords around a booming bassline and crunchy drums on "I", before beefing up the beats and reaching for funk-fuelled bass and ear-catching stabs on bona-fide peak-time workout "J".

No doubt you're already tuning in with high expectations about the calibre of party fodder on offer, and "Hustle" sets the tone pitch-perfect from the get-go. There's a fine balance between disco, boogie and house achieved here, whereas "Hold Up" takes a more purist disco approach (with Philly strings thrown in for good measure). Review: In today's age we get mindful of life and love.

The now rare nights of the true hedoni$t.

A hero who's not afraid of the consequences.

Who is ready to live that full life.

To push the mind and senses of joy.

No rules. Just reality. Wildness. Nothing can be stopped.

Rule that Mystery.

The label, an extension of Robert James' party brand, is all about quality electronic music; house, techno, electro, disco... reflecting the ethos of Rob's popular shindigs. On this third release, The Vimto Paradox, British producer Harry Wills steps up with three original cuts, plus a remix from his buddy Tim Schlockermann. Review: Detroit Lost Tapes is the third long play of Delano Smith. A collection of unheard and lost tracks from his bulging archives. The tracks were recorded in the early 2000's and carefully restored by Delano and Yossi Amoyal. As you'd expect, the quality threshold is exceedingly high throughout, with the veteran producer delivering cuts that fuse the melodious and dreamy vibes of deep house with the rhythmic snap of Motor City techno.

Review: The next drop on Constant Sound sees Josh Baker and Alfie Jack team up following their excellent joint outing on Aesthetic earlier this year. The A side opens up with a seductive blend of minimal tech beats and plush, trance-licked synths on "Conquest Of Time", which is promptly followed up by the leaner, heads-down grooves of "5am Club" for the deeper dancefloor contingent. "Shake Effect" is a feisty offering to kick off the B side with a bassy strut, snappy samples and lashings of atmospheric FX, and then "Devon Break" flips the script with a rolling breakbeat number peppered with acidic blips and bloops

Review: No fuss presents Dominique Fils-Aime & Saison featuring the well respected Waajeed on remix. Saison team up with Dominique to produce a soulful, sultry, late-night cut that further establishes them as masters of their craft. This is a perfect example of their ability to create deep, underground house music that works on crowds both large and small. Waajeed offers an emotive and classic Detroit take with the vocal . Review: A new philosophy as time enters a radical history of our evolution. Being and nothingness in one, creatures of habit, the angels of nature, we can herald a new humanity.

DJN4 enters in homage. Optimus Yarnspinner. Edification through music bends, but does not break the untameable lost voices. This dissolution of ego, where culture exemplifies the principle of innovation through excess, the nocturnal brain sees only what it seeks.

The order of time is more than a conspiracy of the people, this enforced interlude does not mean culture's end. Our culture, music's culture, acts as a genome, a graffiti of society.

The psy, the rave, the sounds, the species, the food of the gods. Alpha Juno, Cyclon 303, mutable instruments and ideas collated, N4's modern mysticism to harness the Earth as a being of sound. This occult features an anarchism, offering us a collective immortality, allowing us, showing us, how to be more humane.

Across eight tracks, our DJ weaves a journey to the inner and outer digi sphere, a two-year search, in to steppas, out of dub, evoking legitimate synthesis and sensibility. Look beyond Zamonia. The lost Chord. An alien dreamtime. Tales of Z.

Review: Given that John Devecchis AKA The Owl decided to call his long-promised debut album Concrete Funk, you'd probably expect something heavy, grey and angular. Yet the music contained within - a mixture of loopy, gently beefed-up revisions and straight re-edits of killer funk, soul, disco and boogie jams - is anything but grey and dull. It's every bit as colourful as his previous EPs, with the many highlights including the bumpin' 'Solar Funk', the squelchy brilliance of Steve Monite re-rub 'Only You Baby', the synth-heavy, Italo-style throb-job 'The Truth', and the soaring, string-drenched disco release of 'Knuckles'. With 12 killer cuts strewn across two slabs of wax, it's a value-for-money collection that contains more high-grade edits than you can shake a proverbial stick at.

Review: Oscuro Records return for their second release, this time from Italian tastemaker Deyayu who
delivers four servings of slinky yet driving house.

'Loser' begins the journey, a classy groove for a summers day that is sure to get bodies moving. 'Normalized' ups the ante with a slightly faster pace and firm percussion, coupled with passing pads and retro stabs, one to light things up with as the night sets in.

On the flip side, 'Sender' gives off a dreamy feel, with a subtle cosmic flare, meanwhile 'Yupiter' drives us home, with slapping drums, unforgettable melodies and a tasty bassline.

Review: Kepler has already been on a barnstorming run over the past 12 months with key drops on Pleasure Zone, Hoarder and Discotech amongst many others, not to mention his killer garage excursions as 0113. Now he shores up on Constant Sound with some fizzing, energetically charged techno that packs a punch and dazzles on top thanks to an acute sense of melody. DX7 organ basslines collide with cosmic arps and a thumping rhythm section on "Contact", while "Afterglow" takes things a little deeper without dropping the tempo. "Movement" revels in a cascade of interwoven synth lines, while "Pulse" takes a leaner, clubbier route without losing that up-for-it rush around the upper 120 BPM range.

Review: Adam Nahalewicz made an impressive debut with the warm, bubbling house cut he dropped on Recycle, and now Aesthetic have snapped him up for an EP that expands on the promise of that sole track. "Quiver" leads the way with a wonderfully dynamic strain of bumping tech house peppered with fluid sound design and pinprick textures, while on the flip "Level Up" brings a fresh dose of warm, melodic synth work into the mix while still riding that oh-so crisp groove. "A.M. Rhythm" is equally melodious, albeit a little smoother on the rhythm side of things and with a gentle nature that should suit the up all night crowd beautifully.
