Review: There's no shortage of great electro around at the moment, but lest we forget Carl Finlow has been dishing out some of the finest for decades now. In many ways 20/20 Vision is his spiritual home too, so it's great to see him imparting his skills for a fresh long player of razor sharp body poppers loaded with robo-funk. From charging opener "Apparatus" to freaky wriggler "Carbon Deposits", restrained creeper "Components" to punchy melodic workout "Ampere", there's a lot to enjoy and so much musical detail to absorb across this record. As if we'd expect any less from Mr. Finlow.

  3. Reedale Rise - "Lux"
  4. Derek Carr - "The Gap"
Review: Exit planet earth by 20/20 Vision is a new series of various artist vinyl releases, selected and compiled by ralph lawson. There is a truly heavy weight selection of artists involved in the project and the first edition 'carbon' leads with contributions from two of the most influential electro producers of all time The Hacker and 214, who both deliver unforgiving hard hitting excursions to future worlds. On the other side Reedale Rise sheds some light with 'Lux' before the record is beautifully closed with an uplifting composition for space travel - 'The Gap' by Derek Carr. Artwork is supplied in a collectible series of spectrographs in limited edition spot colour sleeves.A

  3. Blinky (4:34)
  4. Other Worlds (4:58)
Review: Constant Sound's electro arm, Infiltrate, calls upon the considerable talents and technical heft of London Modular Alliance for a bruising EP of body-popping exploration strapped to a tough n' funky beatdown. "Crack Fox" is as nervy and nimble as the title might suggest, while "Regular Customer" takes things in a hyper-detailed direction compatible with the kind of advanced machine funk you expect from Silicon Scally. "Blinky" follows suit with another artfully woven web of twitchy synth hooks and deftly sequenced drums, and then "Other Worlds" switches things up with some seriously hefty bass pressure pivoting around a dubstep attitude towards space and moodiness.

Review: Miles Sagnia has a deep-rooted backstory in the UK underground techno scene. Under his own name and as Miles Atmospheric he's produced consistently compelling techno for labels like Finale Sessions, FireScope, Aesthetic Audio and Applied Rhythmic Technology. Such associations point to the soundworld Sagnia inhabits - a harmonically balanced strain of deep-diving brain food that favours expressive musicality and inventive programming over rigid functionality.

Having previously appeared as Miles Sagnia on Ornate back in 2010, he returns to the label as Miles Atmospheric with three cuts that explore melancholic moods through artful interplay between beautifully rendered synth tones and intricate drum machine excursions. These tracks still move with purpose and presence, but the end goal is more cerebral than physical - a perfect fit for the immersive experiences Ornate has always strived to promote.

Evoked Potentials 3/3
Cat: SEM 0162019. Rel: 16 Mar 20
  1. Repose
  2. Sensory Process (Plant43 remix)
Review: Second time around for the third and final part of electro hero Gerard 'ERP' Hanson's "Evoked Potentials" series, which first hit stores way back in 2011. A-side "Repose" is (quite literally) classic ERP, with Hanson peppering Egyptian Lover style drums and funky synth-bass with chiming lead lines, starburst chords and deep space chords. It's tuneful and picturesque, but will also have you on your feet and throwing shapes in no time at all. Over on the flip, Plant43 (London electro veteran Emile Facey) turns in a very Drexciyan take on "Sensory Process", in the process wrapping Hanson's bittersweet strings and 33rd century electronic motifs around a suitably deep sea electro rhythm.

  4. Displaced
Review: The Craigie Knowes catalogue is full of mighty fine machine music, though it's only in recent times that the Scottish imprint has embraced electro. This 12" comes from one of electro's longest-serving talents, British scene stalwart Carl Finlow. As you'd expect, the quality threshold remains impressively high throughout, with Finlow breakdancing between deep, poignant electro/synth-pop fusion ("Descent"), starburst, ultra-melodious electronic bliss (the body-popping flex of "Undertones"), hard-wired mutant funk ("Cascade") and stretched-out electronic soundscapes that sit somewhere between pitched-down electro and evocative ambient techno. Finlow is a master at squeezing every last drop of emotion from his machines so it's no surprise that this EP is another emotive, mood enhancing treat.

  1. Linolium Or Cardboard
  2. It Never Really Ends
  3. Earthworms
  4. Nocturnal Hikes
Review: This seems like a marriage made in heaven. It sees electro scene stalwart 214 (AKA sometime Frustrated Funk, Touchin' Bass, CPU and Klakson contributor Chris Roman) pitch up on Cultivated Electronics for the very first time. There's a real sci-fi feel to proceedings, as if the cuts were created to soundtrack some neon-lit movie set in a dystopian future. If dancing through the apocalypse is your thing, check the fuzzy and forthright electro-funk of "Earthworms" and the punchy, Drexciya-on-Tatooine pop of "It Never Really Ends". Elsewhere, opener "Linolium Or Cardboard" mixes off-kilter electro beats with Mascara-clad new wave synth sounds, while "Nocturnal Hikes" is impressively weird and spaced-out despite its crunchy drums and weighty bass.

Review: After a busy Summer on the road, South London's Silverlining returns to his home-grown imprint for the tenth release on his cult series. The EP opens with his sublime 2019 remix of Arctor and Jay Hill, previously unrleased on vinyl. On the flip are two reissues: the first of his 1998 remix of Ravi McArthur from Reverberations; and a Detroit-inspired electro track written at the tender age of 19 back in 1995 under his early Spook in the House guise.

  4. Proto VI
  5. Fast Assembler
Review: Project Ghost might be a new name, but the producer behind it, Andrew Lagowski, has previously recorded under a variety of aliases and has no less than 14 solo albums to his name. While much of his material is experimental in nature and rooted in ambient and industrial, "Fractal Disruption" sees Lagowski join the dots between hypnotic old school techno and body-popping electro. He begins with a confirmed floor-filler in the shape of four-to-the-floor jam "Live Sparks", before wrapping spacey electronics and glacial melodies around a crunchy electro beat on "The Irdologist's Dream". "Dead Calm" is a ragged, TB-303 powered slab of acid-electro, while "Photo 4" is a clanking deep electro workout and "Fast Assembler" recalls the mid-1990s IDM and ambient techno movements.

Review: We are proud to welcome Fear-E for his Dark Entries debut 'Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place' out February 28th. Fear-E is the moniker of Scott McKay a Glasgow based DJ and producer. Scott has already made a name for himself as one of Glasgow's most technically-gifted and diverse selectors over the past decade. Then a slew of releases on the home-grown Dixon Avenue Basement Jams and Super Rhythm Trax introduced Fear-E, equally skilled studio operator, to the world. 'Grey Skies In A Dear Green Place' contains six club-ready tracks to "smash sound systems and illuminate sweaty warehouses." The title is a reference to a nickname that Glasgow has, coming from Cumbric, means 'green hollow' or (dear) 'green place'. Layering cut-up vocals with warm thumping beats, Scott creates a stripped-back yet deeply jackin' vibe. Call these tracks what you will, "acid attacks", "club destroyers", "pickle ticklers?!" All songs have been mastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. For the cover, Scott commissioned legendary Detroit illustrator Alan Oldham, who's artwork has graced established an identity for Transmat and DJAX-UP-BEATS, to create a futuristic portrait of Glasgow in black & white and with green kryptonite flourishes by Eloise Leigh.d

Review: The second release in the exit planet earth compilation vinyl series features four exclusive tracks designed for space travel, including the first ever collaboration between Keith Tucker of Aux 88 and Carl Finlow. The resulting track 'Coder' is an electro masterpiece. The more established electro pairing of Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code hit heavy with 'Red Cell' while Voitmann brings the bass to space with 'Subtopia'. The record is rounded off beautifully by Cignol with Detroit infused string sections and harmonies on his '51D' track.

Review: Time Passages boss Binh is a big fan of Innershades. Last year he brought the Belgian producer to the label for the very first time and here offers up another four tracks from the rave-loving rising star. He hits the ground running with "It's Time", a warehouse-ready throb-job full of new beat riffs and creepy electronics, before offering up another funky Euro techno cut that sounds like it could have been played at an after-party in 1990 ("Forum"). Elsewhere, "Euphoria In Ginza" is a deliciously chiming and melodious breakbeat-house workout, while "No Romantic" is another retro-futurist romp full of squelchy synth bass and rushing, turn-of-the-90s style nostalgic riffs.

  8. Karsten Pflum - "Uric Fusee"
Review: Compiled by label founders Steve Hyland & Nathan Phillips, and mastered by Keith Tenniswood at Curve Pusher, Volume 1 is a statement of sonic intent from new electronic label, Future Massive. Weighing in with a total of eight tracks from well-established and brand-new artists alike, Side A sets the tone by offering up a sublime slice of electro-soul from Plant43, followed by a mesmerising techno track from Berlin based producer Eluize, before dipping into a dancefloor shuffle of groovy acid tracks from Rootsix and The Gasman. Side B drops the tempo to indulge in dreamy sounds from Hyland's own Attraktta moniker, before Rolando Simmons' haunting but wonky melodies pick things back up. The Future Sound Of London legends Brian Dougans and Garry Cobain deliver the experimental acid in fine fashion on a brand new Humanoid track, before the album closes at full tilt with a glorious exercise in drum & breaks from Karsten Pflum.
