Review: Hifi Sean gets his hands on a dusty old tape that had the golden vocal of the ultimate soul diva Loleatta Holloway singing the Style Council classic 'Shout to the Top' which was recorded and released by Fire Island in 1998. There was no musical parts on this tape only the vocal so Sean went about rewriting the arrangement and brings this beauty into the present with these 3 versions including a soulful string laden soul groover , a real late night pumping gospel house jam and a swooning orchestral reprise closing the E.P which includes the last repeated line we all want to hear and we all want to believe right now . "It's going to be alright"

Out In The Open (reissue)

Review: Andres has become one of Detroit house music's most celebrated producers in the last decade, but as any deep house nerd will tell you, he's been serving up superb singles and albums since the late 1990s. Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. A-side 'You'll Be The One' is a great example of his trademark dusty, sample-heavy and loop-driven style, with crackling extracts from all manner of soul and jazz-funk cuts being melded into a hazy, quietly soulful deep house treat. The even deeper and dustier, MPC house jam 'Is It Cool' kicks-off side B, before the Detroiter goes all Moodymann on the impeccable, solo-laden 'Take Off'. A genuine must-have!

Review: Given that John Devecchis AKA The Owl decided to call his long-promised debut album Concrete Funk, you'd probably expect something heavy, grey and angular. Yet the music contained within - a mixture of loopy, gently beefed-up revisions and straight re-edits of killer funk, soul, disco and boogie jams - is anything but grey and dull. It's every bit as colourful as his previous EPs, with the many highlights including the bumpin' 'Solar Funk', the squelchy brilliance of Steve Monite re-rub 'Only You Baby', the synth-heavy, Italo-style throb-job 'The Truth', and the soaring, string-drenched disco release of 'Knuckles'. With 12 killer cuts strewn across two slabs of wax, it's a value-for-money collection that contains more high-grade edits than you can shake a proverbial stick at.

  4. Zone (Drum mix)
Review: Mysticisms delves into the spiritual realm with the archival recordings of London based Japanese duo, Afrobuddha to present their highly sought music to date, in Obame and Zone, on one EP.
With copies of their debut releases now selling for dizzying prices, a chance to work with label friend Kay Suzuki attained. With his respected Time Capsule label releasing a stream of amazing world music inspired reissues, his project with Koichi Sakai is revisited and reborn.
Released as a celebration of the spiritual affinity felt with the African and Afro-Caribbean music community, enter 'Obame'; a collaboration with the Kakatsitsi Drummers - pioneering percussionists of the Ga tribe of Southern Ghana. Combining traditional drumming with flutes, xylophone and folkloric chants, Suzuki and Sakai's art and philosophy of rhythm via house, disco, afrobeat and reggae, underpins this offering to stunning effect.
'Zone' follows. A spiritual essence of London's vibrant multi-cultural society, the track fuses intoxicating raw percussion. Featuring Ghanaian master drummer Afla Sackey's thundering congas and djembe on a 3/4 signature of polyrhythm beats, repetitive chants and deep analogue synths, this is a stripped backed journey into drum dub of space-bending delays and reverb effects.

Review: Celebrating his 25th year as a producer and DJ, London's Silverlining announces his first ever double-vinyl artist project, 'Simulacra', a collection of emotive yet powerful body music fresh from his South London studio. Known for his diverse and bassline-driven grooves, this work sees him straddle between the stripped-back house and techno that we have come to adore on his acclaimed Silverlining Dubs series, with eclectic forays into territories of electronic musicality unexplored by him until now. Adopting a similar analogue workflow and kit-list to that used for his 1990s productions, the collection retains his trademark sonic brilliance, whilst demonstrating, once again, that his ideas are far from running out.

Subtly interwoven into its mood and lyrics, the album explores themes of dependence on misrecognised digital identities, and the importance of real world tangibility. For the album's artwork, Silverlining has collaborated with celebrated print-making artist, Leonie Bradley, whose work explores similar themes.

This versatile collection of new music from Silverlining caters both for tasteful record collectors, and deeper DJs alike, with its extensive yet consistent spectrum of flavours.

Review: Soul Central return with ES002 Days Of Disco EP following up Electric Shrine ES001 which firmly set the scene for this underground label, and sold out within a week of release, becoming an instant collectors piece and serious weapon for DJ's in the know. Here we have a collection of raw disco inspired cuts starting with 'Just Friends' which is a serious neo soul stomper crowned with a prominent sing-a-long chorus. Whilst 'Party Together' offers a relentless Boogie bass overload. Third inline comes 'Your Smile' which takes the form of a sensitive Soul ballad vocal, adding in classic ascending strings and some modern House syncopation, turning in a deep journey laced with dancefloor dominating tones. The final track 'The Michigan Slide' is a real disco vibe that revisits a 300 year old Bach melody on Clavinet. The complete EP is dusty, groovy and banging to say the least, maintaining a resounding quality that this standout UK act always deliver... great music that makes you want to dance.

Review: A new philosophy as time enters a radical history of our evolution. Being and nothingness in one, creatures of habit, the angels of nature, we can herald a new humanity.

DJN4 enters in homage. Optimus Yarnspinner. Edification through music bends, but does not break the untameable lost voices. This dissolution of ego, where culture exemplifies the principle of innovation through excess, the nocturnal brain sees only what it seeks.

The order of time is more than a conspiracy of the people, this enforced interlude does not mean culture's end. Our culture, music's culture, acts as a genome, a graffiti of society.

The psy, the rave, the sounds, the species, the food of the gods. Alpha Juno, Cyclon 303, mutable instruments and ideas collated, N4's modern mysticism to harness the Earth as a being of sound. This occult features an anarchism, offering us a collective immortality, allowing us, showing us, how to be more humane.

Across eight tracks, our DJ weaves a journey to the inner and outer digi sphere, a two-year search, in to steppas, out of dub, evoking legitimate synthesis and sensibility. Look beyond Zamonia. The lost Chord. An alien dreamtime. Tales of Z.

Review: Malaga's Cuartero is next up on Constant Black, bringing a finely honed minimal house sound that fits into the label's shadowy club aesthetic perfectly. "Rame" is a driving, insistent slice of stripped down house with plenty of subtle wriggles and textures gurgling away under the surface. "Melkor" has some tougher drums, not least around the low end, but the same economy of sonics is applied here where the beat takes the lead and the FX skirt and skitter around the beat. "Caterpillar" has a tougher, less swung accent to its beats, but the chunky drum machine patterns are still executed with that stern focus that makes a minimal track pop off in the mix.

Review: After reissuing the classic Cassiopeia by Nail, Mysticisms return with more cosmically charged party cuts geared towards wiggy dancefloors inside and out. The Alchemy 12" brings together some of the label's key characters to date and some new crew, leading in with the heady, sticky thump of Persian's "Worries In The Dance" as faithfully remixed by Jonny Rock. Vertigo Inc eschew common dynamics for a loping, acoustic groove that favours more esoteric spaces while retaining a strange forward momentum and bewildering atmosphere. Asian Psilocybe Foundation get into a trippy strain of tech house with the gorgeous "Wave Control", and then Afrobuddha rounds the set out with the deeply layered Kakatsitsi drumming of "Obame (Treat Mix)".

"Quiver" leads the way with a wonderfully dynamic strain of bumping tech house peppered with fluid sound design and pinprick textures, while on the flip "Level Up" brings a fresh dose of warm, melodic synth work into the mix while still riding that oh-so crisp groove. Dudley Strangeways is up first with "Mutual Core", a soothing balm of a deep house production with a hazy late morning mood. Loht Vostok ramps thing sup with "La Luz", a crisp and uptempo tech house trip with mellow synth parts to offset the urgency of the drums. TIJN takes things in a decidedly subtle direction with the gentle lull of "Amorpheus", and then Jean Bressan gets into a seriously immersive groove on the shimmering "Apartment 303".

Review: Exploring machine funk, the true hedoni$t returns.

Absolution, one's senses rational is to find happiness.

Intrinsically seeking doctrine, a philosophy for pleasure.

Through liberty and triumph, vice weeps before joy.

This primitive. Our delinquent hero. Who will never cease.

Libertine. Utilitary. Wildness.

Embrace the Mystery.

Emancipation (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SURM 02. Rel: 22 Feb 21
  1. Emancipation
  2. Emancipation (Button dub)
Review: Those of a certain vintage may remember Surreal Records, a subsidiary of early UK tech-house imprint Swag Records, run by Mike Parsons and Paul Stubbs. Recently the label sprung back into life in order to reissue some of its most potent and sought-after tracks. This number from the Mingers, AKA Parsons and Timmy Stuart, falls into that category. In its' original form (side A), 'Emancipation' is a fine example of turn-of-the-century tech-house/deep house fusion, where dreamy chords, weightless female vocal snippets, high-frequency acid motifs and meandering synth sounds ride a chunky bassline and techno-tempo, garage-influenced beat. Over on the flip you'll find the pair's 'Button Dub', a more stripped-back and bass-heavy affair that does a brilliant job in showcasing the cut's killer groove.

Review: Alan Dixon launches his brand new label Love Attack, the Multi Periodic Oscillations EP being a three tracker from Man Power at his curious techno best. Deep, dark and dubby, not to mention suitable for 3am needs everywhere, it opens with 'Cepheid Variable Part 1', 11 minutes of twists and turns, revolving around a hypnotic groove. Its baby brother 'Part 2' keeps the vibes intact before 'Applegate Mechanism' closes the EP in a straight up dancefloor fashion. Keep your eyes on Love Attack, with many more releases lined up for the next year.

  4. Silver Spaceships (Alphonse remix)
Review: Persian, the man who launched the label in 2017 returns, again offering classics from the archive tapes in the Garage bounce of Feel Da Vibe and the Jungle tinged Silver Spaceships.

Since appearing on Acetate 10" back in (where were you in) '92, Persian, Persian Prince or Artist Formerly Known As PP, aka Peter Riley, has been following his own path, breaking ground with self released, slabs of dynamite wax.

Delivering a myriad of styles, from Breaks to House, Digidub to Jungle, here, as with MYS001, the original masters were handed to contemporaries to work their magic. Brother Nebula is a secret non de plum of a producer who has been around long enough to know the score, switching continents and releasing music on a myriad of labels before setting up his new Legwork label, creating a fresh wave.

The respectful but wonderful spacial dub house remake of the anthem Feel Da Vibe builds perfectly before snaps bring it back down to Earth. Alphonse (Especial / Klasse Wrecks) however, heads for the heavens with an expanse of floating percussion that explores the line between Breaks and Jungle to move Silver Spaceships in to a new decade.

  4. U GT DWN
Review: Four more firing cuts of UK House & Garage from Club of Jacks back on their own imprint, once again bringing that fine fusion of 4/4 flavours.

Kicking things off on the A side is Panther Dub, a darker, sub heavy, rolling number mixing together jazzy, rave and rude boy elements for a potent cocktail. One for the UKG heads.

Mind Games mixes classic thumping, swinging drums, a driving deep bass and jazzy synths with a hooky vocal and a slamming piano line that comes in to raise hands and pulses.

Real Good sits in a space between deep house and UKG again bringing a variety of elements into a melting pot of a groove.

Closing out the EP is U GT DWN - a bumpy, trancey deep garage house vibe with lush filtered female from a classic vocal sample twisted with blissful strings.

Produced by Club of Jacks, mastered by Curve.

Review: The brothers OdD return to their self titled label after a two year hiatus with more of that refined, off-centre minimalism they do so well. "Obelisk" is an epic scraping the 12 minute mark with a tapestry of intricate beat design and spacious atmospherics - one to take the dancefloor to some intriguing places deep into the morning. "1M Pendulum" has a more linear house groove, and a plethora of subtle tweaks and wobbles rumbling away in the lower register. "Hotep" closes the B side with a spaced out groover that teeters on the edge of ambient, albeit with a nagging house groove holding everything together.

  1. Jurassic Shanghai Acid

  4. Saigon Acid
Review: Akio Nagase joins Especial with an EP of global acid tracks. Centred around his heritage, Osaka based Nagase infuses his sounds with a mixture of dub and ethno-dance, wrapped in 303 infused mid-tempo 4/4 grooves.

Making music for over 20 years, as well as running his Makedub parties, Nagase has released for Sound Channel, Darker Than Wax and cult Japanese digital label Chillmountain. It is here, on the latter, that the connection was made and his tracks unearthed.

Rearranged, re-edited and remixed especially for vinyl, Jurassic Shanghai Acid starts, fusing sound effects, dialogue and samples atop squelching acid beats. Following is Mongol 303, as Khoomii throat singing and acid vibrations loop and flow across the Altai Mountains down to Steppe Plains - Madrugada Eterna.

Okinawa Yunta crosses the South China Sea to home, perfectly mixing unique folk song from Taketomi Island reconstructed with Nagase's gentle, wiggling acid accompaniment. The incessant repetitive groove an Acid mantra, flowing through consciousness to move mind and body.

The bpm's rise for the close. Saigon Acid mixes tradition and Acid House for fun, a 3AM basement jam where Dan Nhi meets 808 and Nagase presents his ethno-acid love in.

Review: Silat Beksi has been busy this year. Remarkably, this expansive double-pack on Burnski's Constant Black label - officially his second full-length excursion and first for six years - is the Ukrainian producer's fifth vinyl missive of 2020. Mate is a fluid, off-kilter and sonically detailed affair, with manipulated jazz samples, oddball spoken word snippets and pots-and-pans percussion mingling with outer-space tech-house grooves, bouncy deep house rhythms, the eccentric stereo panning of Ricardo Villalobos and the locked-in hypnotism of Eastern European minimal techno. It's a sonic palette that guarantees thrills throughout, with Beksi doing a brilliant job of showcasing his distinctive production style.

Review: From party people with shoulder pads, big hair, white Rolls-Royces, panama hats, the Fragrant Harbour that is Hong Kong, had a very unique Hotel Clubbing scene before places like DD's, Canton Disco and Hot Gossip opened their doors.

After the high-in-demand digital release of the "Extinct Melodies From The Canto Club" we've had a lot of requests for more cantonese edits since features on Stamp The Wax and big names such as Blessed Madonna, Nd_baumecker, Crazy P, Ben UFO, Tim Sweeney and more have dropped these in their DJ sets.
So we decided to start a series called "Canto Club House" which will be dedicated to cantonese edits. And what better way to start this series with the two canto head diggers raised in Hong Kong: MH and RFX.

Club-friendly and cheese is what this release is all about.

Review: Starting their 2020 with a bang, OdD swiftly follow up their D Construction EP with another trio of reductionist sure shots for adventurous travelers in the minimal realm. "Pythagorean" lives up to its name with an intricately arranged pattern of percussive threads creating a kind of geometry that crystalises around a sturdy minimal groove. "Do Re Me" features plenty of tripped out FX sweeps and swishy pads that give this roller a dubbed out flavour perfect for the after hours. "Solfegio" switches things up with a crooked broken beat template and some pointed chord drops that really lift the track into an intriguing new realm - this is classy minimal with personality so don't sleep on it!
