Out In The Open (reissue)
  1. You're Still The Same
  2. Is It Cool
  3. Take Off
Review: Andres has become one of Detroit house music's most celebrated producers in the last decade, but as any deep house nerd will tell you, he's been serving up superb singles and albums since the late 1990s. Out in the Open, which here gets the reissue treatment for the first times, dates from 2002 and is every bit as good as you'd expect. A-side 'You'll Be The One' is a great example of his trademark dusty, sample-heavy and loop-driven style, with crackling extracts from all manner of soul and jazz-funk cuts being melded into a hazy, quietly soulful deep house treat. The even deeper and dustier, MPC house jam 'Is It Cool' kicks-off side B, before the Detroiter goes all Moodymann on the impeccable, solo-laden 'Take Off'. A genuine must-have!

Emancipation
Emancipation (180 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: SURM 02. Rel: 22 Feb 21
  1. Emancipation
  2. Emancipation (Button dub)
Review: Those of a certain vintage may remember Surreal Records, a subsidiary of early UK tech-house imprint Swag Records, run by Mike Parsons and Paul Stubbs. Recently the label sprung back into life in order to reissue some of its most potent and sought-after tracks. This number from the Mingers, AKA Parsons and Timmy Stuart, falls into that category. In its' original form (side A), 'Emancipation' is a fine example of turn-of-the-century tech-house/deep house fusion, where dreamy chords, weightless female vocal snippets, high-frequency acid motifs and meandering synth sounds ride a chunky bassline and techno-tempo, garage-influenced beat. Over on the flip you'll find the pair's 'Button Dub', a more stripped-back and bass-heavy affair that does a brilliant job in showcasing the cut's killer groove.

Multi Periodic Oscillations EP
Multi Periodic Oscillations EP (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Cepheid Variable (part 1)
  2. Blazhko Effect
  3. Cepheid Variable (part 2)
Review: Alan Dixon launches his brand new label Love Attack, the Multi Periodic Oscillations EP being a three tracker from Man Power at his curious techno best. Deep, dark and dubby, not to mention suitable for 3am needs everywhere, it opens with 'Cepheid Variable Part 1', 11 minutes of twists and turns, revolving around a hypnotic groove. Its baby brother 'Part 2' keeps the vibes intact before 'Applegate Mechanism' closes the EP in a straight up dancefloor fashion. Keep your eyes on Love Attack, with many more releases lined up for the next year.

Review: Silat Beksi has been busy this year. Remarkably, this expansive double-pack on Burnski's Constant Black label - officially his second full-length excursion and first for six years - is the Ukrainian producer's fifth vinyl missive of 2020. Mate is a fluid, off-kilter and sonically detailed affair, with manipulated jazz samples, oddball spoken word snippets and pots-and-pans percussion mingling with outer-space tech-house grooves, bouncy deep house rhythms, the eccentric stereo panning of Ricardo Villalobos and the locked-in hypnotism of Eastern European minimal techno. It's a sonic palette that guarantees thrills throughout, with Beksi doing a brilliant job of showcasing his distinctive production style.

MOONLIGHT 001 (140 gram vinyl 12")

  1. Jay Tripwire - "Esssit Musiue"
  2. Magnus Asberg Vs Sound Of The Suburbs - "Sunset"
  3. Microman - "Inga Aviseringar"
Review: It's time to get to know Club Magnus, a new label that launches with Moonlight 001, a various artist collection that brings together some fresh contemporary talents across three forward thinking cuts. Jay Tripwire opens up with his scintillating tech house sounds embellished with all the usual acid and after party freakiness. Magnus Asberg then keeps you on your toes with his nimble drum work and the cyborg electro funk of 'Sunset' (vs Sound Of The Suburbs) while Microman closes with the more dark, involving and intense techno convulsions of 'Inga Aviseringar'.

  1. Creak
  2. Croak
  3. Crank
  4. Crease
Review: We've not been able to get to the bottom of who Kenny Burns is (or at least this one - there was a famous Nottingham Forest footballer of the same name in the dim and distant past), and 89: Ghost main man Neil Tolliday is keeping tight-lipped. Either way, this label debut from the man of mystery includes some genuinely impressive moments. Picturesque closer 'Crease', where dreamy chords and kaleidoscopic synth sounds rise and fall atop an unfussy dancefloor beat, reminded us of Nail's own 1993 cut 'Cassiopeia', while 'Crank' is a thrusting slab of early morning techno peppered with squelchy acid motifs, chiming electronics and loopy, mind-mangling riffs. Elsewhere, 'Croak' is an angular slab of warped techno intensity, and opener 'Creak' is a hypnotic neo-trance number.

Cat: TRAPID 02. Rel: 08 Mar 21
  1. The Last Trumpet
  2. We Don't
  3. Red Mutants
  4. We Are The Light
Review: Subradeon is a Neapolitan new school techno producer who carries on in the fine tradition of the likes of Marco Carola and Joseph Capritati. His sound is more fulsome than theirs - soulful, with bouncy drums and vocals to embellish the grooves and really make sure they strike hard. 'The Last Trumpet' is a sleek and clean banger, an early Detroit styled anthem for the peak of the night that still has its foot in the underground. 'We Don't' is lit up with silvery synths and chattering percussion, again a la Motor City sound of Underground Resistance. The closing two tracks bring yet more high energy, stirring laced sounds that are epic and excellent in equal measure.

  4. Ed Nine - "Reality"
Review: Groove Access is back with a split EP by Dan Ryan & Ed Nine. Dan Ryan starts off the A-side with the cosy bassline of 'New Home', the track traversing down a path full of punchy stabs, atmospheric vocal textures and a unique key change to boot. 'Fuzzy Tape Dreams' is next up, setting out to hypnotize you with bouncy bass, crunchy drums, hazy 909 rides and pads that sound like they were run through your grandma's old transistor radio. Ed Nine takes over the B-side with 'Another Day'. Starting off with a glowing intro, we're quickly led into a floor banging groove, followed by a dreamy push and pull chord progression. Then, as an encore, 'Distant Reality', all knocking kick, dancing percussion and throwback brass.

Review: Three sumptuous offerings of quality grooves from the Aesthetic series, as Paris club scene fave Djebali and Argentinian DJ and producer Jorge Savorett join forces once again. This choice trio definitely veers on the side of the under rather than over stated, preferring to rely on warm rhythmic flourishes and enticing, inviting instrumentation rather than thumping firepower or gimmickry. The beats are tight and hypnotic, with perhaps just the slightest hint of a nod to the shuffling drum machine funk of early Derrick May productions like 'Nude Photo' here and the more head nodding repetition of Chicago jack house there. Aesthetically pleasing for sure.
