Jazz Carnival: Space Jazz mix (Global Communication remix) (remastered)
Cat: JD 047. Rel: 08 Nov 19
Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Jazz Carnival (Space Jazz mix - Global Communication remix) (2:00)
  2. Jazz Carnival (LP mix)
Review: We hear on the grapevine that there could be some seriously desirable Global Communication vinyl reissues on the way in 2020. To tide us over until then, Far Out has decided to reissue one of the legendary West Country duo's most celebrated and sought-after remixes: their 1996 "Space Jazz" remix of Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival". Pritchard and Middleton's version is a spacey deep house epic of intergalactic proportions, with subtle elements of the Brazilian band's loose and languid '90s re-recording of the track (the B-side "LP Mix") weaving in and out of a warm, rich and hypnotic groove. It's one of the most dancefloor-friendly of all Global Communication remixes - many were straight ambient or downtempo rubs - but also one of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's finest.

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
  1. Inspector Norse
  2. Inspector Norse (Slowly remix)
Review: Given the popularity of Todd Terje's 2012 nu-disco anthem "Inspector Norse", it's a bit of a surprise that we've not seen more cover versions over the years. By our reckoning, this is only the second, following the release of The Gene Dudley Group's heavy funk take in 2015. Cruisic's version is very different in tone, re-imagining the Norwegian's spiraling dancefloor epic as a shuffling jazz-funk workout where Terje's spiraling synthesizer lead lines are replayed on electric piano and flute. There are plenty of synths involved, but it's an altogether warmer and looser take on the anthem-like original. Slowly provides the obligatory B-side remix, turning Cruisic's version into a jaunty summer synth-dub workout with a touch of dub disco flavour.

Mahakali: The Music Of Don Cherry
Mahakali: The Music Of Don Cherry (numbered LP + silkscreen print limited to 300 copies)
Cat: KOS 4LTD. Rel: 18 Oct 19

Broken Beat/Nu Jazz
Review: Previously, French producer Gary Gritness has carved a niche as a creator of hard-wired revivalist electro and boogie, delivering slightly more eclectic - but wholeheartedly electronic - albums for Hypercolour and others. His latest project is a little different. It sees him join forces with two musician friends to deliver an album of radical new (mostly electronic) interpretations of Don Cherry's jazz-fusion works. All seven tracks were recorded live in the studio using a mixture of dusty drum machines, synthesizers, percussion, acoustic instrumentation (Spanish guitar, saxophone) and the musicians' own voices. The results are superb, delivering intergalactic and often wonderfully out-there covers of Cherry compositions that sound like they were beamed down from some far-off tech-jazz galaxy.

  1. Jump Around (original Multi track Rap version)
  2. Jump Around (Multi track instrumental unreleased version)
Review: This has appeared with little or no pre-hype, so we're not quite sure of the story behind it. What we can tell you is that it offers up two rare versions of the ultimate golden era hip-hop party record, House Of Pain's 1992 anthem "Jump Around". On the A-side you'll find the "Multi Track Original Rap Version", which appears to be the first recorded version, featuring the band's now familiar lyrics over DJ Muggs' killer beat (which, according to lore, he original offered to both Cyprus Hill and Ice Cube first). His superb "Original Multi-Track Instrumental", which has never before seen the light of day, takes price of place on side B.

Review: Next in the compiler hotseat for seminal mix series 'Back to Mine' is the ever popular and world renowned Jungle. The mix delves through the band's personal collection of leftfield-pop, deep house, modern jazz, Afro-funk and symphonic soul.

From bedroom studio duo to talent-filled seven-strong live collective, Jungle - led by Josh Lloyd-Watson and Tom McFarland - shot to success in 2014 with their self titled debut album. Online word-of-mouth, IRL buzz, rave reviews, and a Mercury Music Prize nomination led to half a million sales, burgeoning DJ careers, and a global tour that lasted two years. In 2018 Jungle released their second album 'For Ever', a lush, psychedelic, kaleidoscopic, romantic record defined by their journeys simultaneously geographical, professional and personal.

Their Back To Mine mix kicks off with Barbara Moore's evocative 'Steam Heat', fittingly originally written for De Wolfe music library as a cue for a journey down a jungle river, before Inflo, Jungle's producer on 'For Ever', drops an addictive bump of Afro-funk. Picking things up, Jungle switch from 90s disco by Merle to more recent house tracks by Manuel Darquart and Drumtalk. Bristol DJ Admin provides the percussion heavy 'Space Cadet' and the irrepressible Mocky supplies good vibes on 'How It Goes'.

The second half of the mix features a more eclectic selection starting with the sophisticated pop of The Marias and Sam Evian and the slow motion symphonic soul of 'Super Rich Kids' by Sly5thAve. There's a spotlight for modern jazz with tracks by Kamaal Williams, Mansur Brown and BadBadNotGood featuring Kaytranada. Before it's time to leave, we also hear modern gospel-influenced soul by The Flying Stars of Brooklyn, mysterious band Sault with the timeless 'Masterpiece', Paul Cherry's lo-fi dream pop ballad 'Like Yesterday', and a perfect closer to any set: 'Sunday' by HNNY. Jungle also gift Back To Mine with the exclusive 'Come Back A Different Day'.

"When asked what genre of music we like or create we always answer explaining that we try to not hear music in genre but more in sonic and emotion, and if it feels good then it is good. By that merit, we have conjured a list of far-reaching tracks and brought them together to sit harmoniously on this Back to Mine mix. Put together mostly in the confines of our London based garden studio, where many a late night gathering has taken place, the mix makes it way through psych, Afro-beat, house and soul with some of our favourite tracks of the moment. Have fun and enjoy." - Jungle

The first volume of Back To Mine by Nick Warren was released in February 1999 and it went on to include editions by Groove Armada, Orbital, New Order, Roots Manuva and Mercury Rev. The compilations are based on what the artist would play at home after a night out, rather than as part of a nightclub session - tagged "a personal collection for after-hours grooving". In January 2019, the series was rebooted with a mix from Nightmares on Wax, described in an 8/10 Mixmag review as "a super smooth and positive mix".

Review: "Call on Me" is the standout single from cult Japanese beat maker mabanua's 2018 album Blurred. It's an impossibly innocent and naive sounding track thanks to Chara's angelic vocal delivery and the gentle, carefree guitar licks beneath, but it gets totally flipped by Knxwledge. The in demand, LA-based Stones Throw artist reworks it into a slow motion beat with hazy chords and a superbly funky bassline. In his hands, Chara's vocal becomes somehow romantic, adding to the track's alluringly lovestruck vibe.

Review: For the third instalment of their record label, Social Joy invites the London based band, Natural Lateral, to step into the records label family with their first LP.. The name "Cogito Ergo Jam" meaning, "I think therefore I jam" sums up its essence and beautifully weaves together different strands of musical roots and forms. Echoing jazz legends like Azymuth, Roy Ayers and Lonnie Liston Smith but always in search of new musical territories, this release takes the listener into a feel-good and fiery sensation of musical freedom. Natural Lateral's tremendous energy in the studio is felt throughout on every track of the LP, giving these recordings a beautifully intimate insight into the phenomenal vision of the band.

Dancehall/Ragga

Review: Alex "Omar" Smith traditionally uses the "Sidetrakx" series to release music that doesn't fit with his club-rocking house and techno 12" series. Even so, few would have expected him to use the latest edition - the sixth in total - to offer up a dancehall cut featuring Jamaican singer and MC Nardo Ranks. "Love Me Like Cooked Food" features Ranks chatting and singing in Patois above a dancehall "riddim" rich in rubbery bass guitar, echo-laden machine drums and flanged guitar riffs. It may be a curveball, but it's rather good. Over on the flip, "Renault used car salesman" John FM guests on a lo-fi R&B/soul workout that also includes some deliciously tongue-in-cheek, poodle perm-sporting soft rock guitar solos.

Review: Since 2015 Reedale Rise's refined strand of electro and techno has quickly established him as one of the most inventive artists operating in the current crop of machine manipulators coming out of the UK underground. Liverpool-based producer Simon Keat has released a prolific body of work under the alias in a short space of time, notching up appearances on crucial labels such as Frustrated Funk, Hizou, Where We Met and many more besides. With a sound indebted to the early wave of UK techno artists like B12, the electro experimentation of Silicon Scally as well as Detroit forefathers such as Drexciya and Model 500, it's not hard to see why Reedale Rise makes perfect sense on Ornate. Technically astounding and emotionally charged, across all three tracks ORN027 marries shimmering, hi-def synth lines with crisp rhythms spanning 2-step shuffle, broken beats and understated techno propulsion.
