Review: Admas' debut album, Sons of Ethopia, is probably best known for "Kalatashew Waga", a polyrhythm-fuelled chunk of melodious synthesizer funk that was memorably remixed by Andras Fox back in 2015. Here, the in-demand album gets an official reissue for the first time since it first appeared on the obscure African Heritage Records label way back in 1984. The band's unique blend of styles and instruments - think synthesizer-heavy instrumental boogie, electronic Afro-beat, dewy-eyed AOR soul and cheery highlife - remains as alluring and surprising as ever. Given that original copies are almost impossible to find, this is a much-needed reissue.

Funk
  1. Beastie Boys Vs MFSB - "Check It Out People"
  2. MFSB - "People All Over The World" (dub)
Review: The latest edition in DJ Soopasoul's "Soopastole Edits" series looks like it may fly off the shelves, and with good reason. The lead cut is not an edit per se, but rather a crafty, clever and expertly produced mash-up that places selected rap flows from the acapella version of Beastie Boys classic "Ch-Check It Out" over a tightened up and fattened up rearrangement of MFSB's disco-era jam "People All Over The World". Sometimes these kinds of mash-ups can be messy, but this genuinely isn't, with the Beasties' vocals fitting the backing track like a glove. Over on side B Soopasoul shares his tweak of the MFSB track, which is entirely instrumental bar periodic use of the band's female backing vocals. In a word: ace!

  2. How Superstitious (instrumental)
Review: DJ Soopasoul's last mash-up was an inspired affair that saw him perfectly fuse tracks by Philadelphia Soul legends MFSB and the Beastie Boys. Here he takes a similar approach, placing the rap vocals from Redman and Method Man's 1995 classic "How High" atop a suitably funky, lolloping beat crafted from Clavinet-heavy sections from Stevie Wonder's party-starting floor-heater "Superstitious". It works remarkably well on the A-side vocal mix, and those who'd not heard either track would be convinced that there was no mash-up antics going on. Over on side B you'll find an instrumental mix that showcases Soopasoul's editing skills; minus the Redman/Method Man vocals, is a fine re-edit of the Stevie Wonder jam.

  12. Nemesis '01
Review: After the success of the 2 Late 4 Love EP, Roy Of The Ravers returns to Emotional Response with a double LP with a deeper perspective, experimenting in ambient and drone textures, lucid techno travails and acid interludes.
Recorded between 1997 and 2017, the album was pieced together over the last six months after Roy's archives were first feared lost and then found. Approached by the label to release a follow up with something more introspective and personal, it was discovered that a recent move to a new studio had led to over 20 years of music being misplaced after it was believed they were mistakenly dropped at a local charity store. However, deep in a box of what were thought to be patch cables were in fact the decades worth of hard drives and here presented, is a sample of those lost recordings.
The nature of the music is introspection, eschewing the acid beats and white noise for a personal encounter between man and machine. The orchestral opening of the title track gives way to the submarine beats, pulsing TB303 and gliding hats of Robinson College 10 to set the outlook to come. Even with the scattering A Dim And Distant Past waking lulled senses, the melodies and feel all lead to a pause and reflect rather than jump and shout.
This is continued with the haunting drives of Bounce Erec and Oriental X0X-Press; the twisted, warped jams of The Weber Traum Boat Pt.3, Ichi and Roland Corp Labs 05; and the beautiful, heartfelt odes in Sade Lost Theme, The Clock House Pt.2 and closer, Nemesis '01. The album's melodic nature hums and shines as CS (6x8) appears as much a centre piece as a alternative consideration to the acid tinged, club bangs of Roy's releases to date.
A surprise package maybe, but in the rolling, word of mouth phenomena that was Emotinium II, all this and more was sensed and so White Line Sunrise II, spreading across 12 songs of contrasting moods, is a further affirmation that there is something good and worthy of exploration

Review: For those whose Californian hip-hop collection is missing a few gems, the West Coast Classics series should be a must-check. The latest edition in the series of the light-touch "45 Edits" by Ronnie Frazzle serves up two more essential cuts from the peerless Dr Dre and lesser-celebrated Death Row Records signee The Lady of Rage. Side A boasts the superb "Nuthin' But A G Thing" from Dre's iconic 1992 album "The Chronic", in which the main man and Snoop Dogg trade verses over a typically on-point G-funk style beat. The Lady of Rage's 1994 jam "Afro Puffs" is a darker, sleazier and tougher affair, with the Virginia-raised rapper's distinctive flow rising above punchy beats, creepy chords and a filthy analogue bassline.

Review: The latest collection of wayward floor heaters from Nuances De Nuit takes us once more into a colourful headspace where the possibilities are wide open to make house music with personality. Californian shining star Liquid Earth is up first, although he's better known as Urulu. 'X-Form' is a bubbling metropolis of futuristic synth squiggles with starry-eyed wonder in its heart and vintage techno smarts up top. Huerta follows up that sterling start with the enchanting electro incantations of 'Legwork', which build wonderfully on the sound laid out on his recent debut album for Voyage Recordings. On the flip, DJOKO brings a smart shuffle and some shimmering synth work to the forefront for a seriously smart twist on the tech house template, while T. Jacques opts for space age machine funk with a splash of boogie poured in for good measure.

With a compulsive passion for the dying art of crate-digging combined with a love for modern synthesis techniques the now Sweden based OCH manages to put together a 12" that could easily be described as psychedelic Chicago. "Whalesong" is a pulsating floor work-out which references the US greats whilst building an emotive sub-aqua soundscape. "Blind is The Wind" follows with a sneaky chord driven spoken interlude which creates an air of tension before climaxing into "Last Chance Saloon".

  2. Be Thankful (Lexx Discomix)
Review: The King & City label is the subject of three 12" reissues, starting with One Blood's classic Lovers Rock take of William DeVaughn's soul anthem, Be Thankful.

Taking the influence of reggae from the Caribbean diaspora within the cultural melting pot of 70s London, the birth of Lovers Rock, often-dubbed 'romantic reggae', is a uniquely black British sound, developed against a backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems.

A style suited to the London scene, it represents an apolitical counterpoint to the then dominant conscious Rastafarian sound and continued the soulful and commonly love-themed rocksteady style.

Active during the scene's peak, King & City was launched by Neville King and Lee Laing to champion the sound and alongside other producers like Dennis Bovell, created genre-defining hits.

Formed in 1979 One Blood was made up of the 5 Robinson brothers - Errol, Jerry, Lloyd, Trevor and Paul - and recording at the legendary TMC studios, went on to release two albums and countless singles.

Be Thankful pays homage to DeVaughn's original, with smooth vocals gliding atop tight drum and bass, vocal jumping up dub pom acapella to summer perfection. The tapes here passed to cohort Lexx, crafting a wonderful discodub that is all groove, expertly cutting back and forth...diamonds in the back, sunroof top.

The 4 track 12" of ultra deep tones and smoky piano musings only found its way into a handful of owner's collections. A few copies resurfaced much later in 2017, with Dave himself selling his last few remaining records via email orders gathered through the online treasure trove that is the We're Going Deep Facebook group. For Those That Knoe promptly got in touch with Dave to talk about a potential project and it can now be revealed. Review: Since it was first released in the collective's native Brazil in 1978, the self-titled debut album from Guilherme Coutinho E O Groupo Stalo has become a sought-after item amongst collectors of Latin jazz. This reissue - the first of any kind - proves why. Offering a mixture of samba-soaked Latin jazz rhythms, sweet vocals, spacey analogue synthesizer sounds, Azymuth style electric piano motifs, MPB style songwriting and Brazilian jazz-funk stylistic tropes, it's a joyously sunny and quirkily off-kilter affair that impresses from start to finish. Production wise it's a little loose and fuzzy round the edges, but that only adds to the album's obvious allure. Recommended!

On the A-side you'll find "Because I Got It Like That", a lolloping party hip-hop jam built around an assortment of complimentary samples, most notably a lift from Sly and the Family Stone's killer cut "You Can Make It If You Try". Review: After the trilogy of King Sporty & The Ex-tra's EPs in 2018, Emotional Rescue returns to the music of Noel Williams with this first ever single release of his 1976 reggae disco bomb, Safari, backed with a special discomix by Lexx.

Taken from William's debut album, Deep Reggae Roots, it can be considered a culmination of his career to date, from growing up on the streets of Kingston, Jamaica, to his first singles for Studio One and Trojan, his relocation to Miami and the birth of his Konduko label and moves to incorporate the local clubs growing affiliation with funk and disco.

Prescient to the coming wave, Williams enlisted some of Miami's finest in George Perry and Clay Cropper (Chocolate Clay), Ron Smith (KC & The Sunshine Band) and legendary producer Alex Sadkin (Compass Point, Bob Marley, Grace Jones, Talking Heads).

The stand out from the album, Safari, with it's hazy, low slung groove of razor sharp rimshot, guitar licks and funk bass is topped with an incessant chant 'Disco, Safari'. Criminally brief, the choice of Lexx to step in the mix was a simple one. His dubbed rework is perfect, laidback, letting the groove roll and King Sporty's mantra shine.

Review: Second time around for Timmy Regisford's inspired rework of Donny Hathaway's 1972 classic "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know", an unofficial revision that first slipped out on white label a couple of years ago. Regisford's revision is inspired, with the veteran New York producer layering Hathaway's heartfelt vocals and select instrumental elements from the original mix (guitar, orchestration) over a bed of rolling house beats and layered percussion. It's an emotional, life-affirming affair that re-casts the melancholic original as a stirring house classic. Over on side B, Joaquin 'Joe' Claussell offers an equally fine "Edits and Overdubs" version that adds some brand-new synth solos, spacey electronics and sweat-soaked percussion to Regisford's impressive revision.

Review: Iconic dub and reggae "rhythm section" Sly and Robbie (AKA Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare) first worked with Vladislav Delay back in 2018, during the recording sessions for their collaborative album with trumpeter Nils Petter Molvaer, "Nordub". It's therefore not that surprising to see them once again join forces with the Finnish experimentalist for another joint full-length. "500 Push Up" is based on grooves, vocalizations and field recordings made at Dunbar and Shakespeare's Jamaican studio, which the Finn then chopped up, reworked and overdubbed in his studio. The result is a set of tracks that take dub in intoxicating new directions, adding heaps of hazy electronic sounds and a distinctive swing that's hugely alluring.

That said, flip side "Lyrics To Go", where Offir utilises a well-known starry electric piano riff amongst his sonic arsenal, is also rather impressive and every bit as soul-soothing as its predecessor.

The resulting track 'Coder' is an electro masterpiece. The more established electro pairing of Jensen Interceptor and Assembler Code hit heavy with 'Red Cell' while Voitmann brings the bass to space with 'Subtopia'. The record is rounded off beautifully by Cignol with Detroit infused string sections and harmonies on his '51D' track.

Review: The varied and changing music of Noel Williams and his Konduko label are explored further with a second series of EPs, this time expanding out of the late 70s / early 80s disco sound to encompass funk and early electro, highlighting this ground breaking artist's influence from reggae roots to the following Miami Bass sound.

Here Williams steps out of his King Sporty moniker for a series of forward thinking and now highly sought after releases. With Konduko as his vehicle, he again teamed up Bobby Caldwell. Recorded at North Miami's Ovadradial Studios, the lowrider funk is underpinned by Caldwell's arrangement, KC & The Sunshine Band's Robert Johnson (drums) and Eugene Timmons' (sax) wonderful solo.

This is augmented by Moton Inc's Diesel & Jarvis subtle but on point Discomix for extended club play. The incessant looping lifts the song and places it firmly in the long line of edit history, from Gibbons to Terje. Synonymous with the "discoid" sound of 90s London and beyond, the cut and paste skills of Diesel (Ballistic Brothers / Yellow Sox) and Jarvis (Pamela / Love Vinyl) have continued at a higher standard since. Their delicate arrangement and deceptive dubbing act the perfect foil to this special Miami funk machine.

Review: The King & City reissue series continues with Paul Robinson's disco boogie jam Come On Sister. Moving from the Lovers sound of his early productions, his first solo recording was aimed straight at the blues, clubs and pirate stations of South London and beyond - a prolific artist on the rise.

Appearing as a 13 year old protegee drummer in The Simeons, recording for the legendary Freedom Sounds label out of Kingston; to forming the influential Roots / Lovers Rock outfit One Blood; then vocalist in the Nick Straker Band; and through to a 30 year career as "dubplate" producer / singer Barry Boom, Robinson is a man of talents and serious legacy.

This highly sought after debut, part of Neville King and Lee Laing's family of labels, followed releases in One Blood and productions for female Lovers groups Blood Sisters and Charisma. A pure disco boogie party cut, Come On Sister sees the Robinson family hit the Brit funk.

In label style, the flip is given the Discomix treatment, here by up and coming digger, dealer and producer, Bruno (Perfect Lives). Letting the horns, dub bass and drums build in anticipation before the keys and guitar join and it all drops to Robinson's vocals - Come On Sister.

  3. Everything Is Fine (Chuggy Discomix)
Review: To close the 3 EP reissue series of Neville King and Lee Laing's King & City label, the all female group Charisma are presented with their summer infused Lovers cut, Everything Is Fine.

Three Lewisham friends, Angela Richardson on lead vocals, with Geselle and Janie backing, were active from 1982 to 1990, but are really remembered for the early recordings made with Neville King. Their debut, Everything Is Fine rides the Lovers sound at its peak. Written with One Blood's Lloyd Robinson, with the rest of band of Robinson brothers providing the rhythm section, this is pure South London sound system music.

Recorded again at TMC (Tooting Music Centre) Recording Studios - working alongside the likes of Dillinger, Tradition and New Musik - Everything Is Fine rides a beautiful soul reggae rhythm as Trevor (Drums) and Lloyd (Bass) Robinson set the foundations, while One Blood provide the Dub mix.

A true love's lament, a song of hope, serenity and pure vibes. Label head Chuggy slides behind the mixing desk for an extended Discomix that stretches, loops and dubs the vocal and dub back forth, to close a glimpse at this uniquely British phenomenon, taking reggae closer to it's heart and soul.

"Apache" is an intensely detailed roller that pivots around a killer vocal take, and uses all kinds of synth flourishes to create a wholly futuristic atmosphere - the garage of the future, but certainly not future garage. "Ignite" has a slightly more old-skool flavour that nods to past masters like Smith & Mighty as well as the pioneering work of El B et al. Classy stuff on both sides of this cool and deadly 12".

He begins with "Spirit De Rio", a wonderfully warm, head-nodding, hip-hop style revision of a summery-sounding old samba gem rich in dewy-eyed female vocals and glistening guitars. Long-time friend, and occasional collaborator Grizzly Adams lends a hand on flipside cut "Different Sweetnuts", a deep and woozy revision of a fragile, female-fronted soul number that wraps drowsy elements from the pair's source material around a bass-heavy beat.

Further proof arrives via this fine two-tracker, which marks the veteran producer's first outing on Alex Attias' Visions Inc label. Probably the pick of the pair is superb A-side "Beautiful Lie", where guest singer D Millz adds a soulful vocal to a glorious bed of dreamy chords, jaunty jazz-funk bass, carnival-friendly drums and colourful synth solos. Lavender continues on a similar theme with flipside "Time Passing", whose loose-limbed broken house drums recall the work of Osunlade. Review: To celebrate 30 years of his influential Z Records imprint, Dave Lee AKA Joey Negro has put together an epic, digital-only compilation of label highlights, plus a string of vinyl samplers featuring some suitably sought-after remixes. There's naturally much mouth-watering fare on offer on sampler one, from the classic disco celebration of Lee's string-laden, multi-track rework of Patrice Rushen classic "Haven't You Heard" (a mix as strong as any by Tom Moulton), to the modern deep house-soul flex of Lee's edit of Atjazz's terrific rework of overlooked Sean McCabe classic "Reach Out". Sandwiched in between you'll find a smooth, peak-time ready tweak of Akabu's "Another World" by Andre Lodemann, as well as the squelchy disco-boogie brilliance that is Hot Toddy's P-funk re-make of the Sunbrust Band's "Taste The Groove".

Review: Before making his name as St Germain, French producer Ludovic Navarre released music under a number of other aliases. One of these was Deepside, originally a 1992 collaboration with Sub System partner Guy Rabiller that quickly became a Navarre solo project. The "Tolerance EP" (1993) was Navarre's first solo Deepside release and has long been considered something of an under-discussed European techno classic. As this reissue proves, it's lost none of its allure. The EP's undisputed highlight remains A-side "French", a glistening, sun-bright chunk of foundational tech-house positivity shot through with Motor City style machine soul and luscious chords aplenty. Elsewhere, "IL" is warm, soft-touch deep techno at its very best, while "111" is a stripped-back acid box jam.

Review: It would be fair to say that Yumiko Morioka isn't that well known. It's not all that surprising given that the Japanese musician/composer only ever released one album, 1997's "Resonance". In recent years it's becoming something of a sought-after artefact of Japan's 1980s new age scene, hence this first European pressing courtesy of Berlin-based outlet Metron Records. The joy of "Resonance" lies in its relatively simplicity and unfussy beauty. Some of the tracks are little more than reverb-laden, neo-classical piano pieces, while others utilise a string quartet, atmospheric field recordings or slivers of warming synthesizer chords. It's minimalist in tone, but picturesque on a grandiose, widescreen scale: just the sort of album that will raise your spirits when the outside world is a scary and unforgiving place.

His A-side "Lots of Love Remix" is particularly strong, offering a rolling, musically rich reconstruction that adds a little more contemporary low-end pressure while showcasing the original version's superb vocals by spreading it out, giving the punchy disco-funk horns, killer bassline and tasty instrument solos time to work its magic. Over on Side B, he offers up an instrumental version of the same mix in which soaring disco strings provide a focal point and push the track forwards towards a suitable celebratory conclusion.

Here the latter track is given a seven-inch reissue, with the group's original version being joined by a flipside instrumental. The joy of "Atom", aside from the band's high-octane, delay-laden vocals, is the vibrant, party-hearty nature of the backing track. Bass-heavy and blessed with crunchy, club-ready drum breaks, it features extensive samples (horns, guitars etc.) from Marvin Gaye and Tammi Tyrell's 1967 Motown classic "Little Ole Boy, Little Ole Girl". These give the track a soulful and funky feel that's guaranteed to put smiles on faces.

Review: Andy Jaggers (aka ADJ) is a name that has been synonymous with the underground electro scene since the mid-nineties.

Andy is one of the understated contributors to the sound; in one dimension pushing the music of others in running one of the best record shops London has had to offer (IQ) as well as forming his sonic niche across his labels and own productions.

Andy released his early works as 3 Elements on his own label Analogique, delivering 4 now very hard to find records in between '95 and '96. Unfortunately for us here at knoe towers the source DATs have been lost to the perils of studio moves. Later he would set up Pyramid Transmissions with Pathic to release their own productions and those of likeminded individuals pushing the envelope of the electro sound outside the normally accepted boundaries. Electro as a genre has always sounded like the future however Andy manages to take it into the fifth dimension and beyond, overlaying IDM techniques and soundscapes onto the solid backbone of Detroit electro.

For Those That Knoe has worked extensively with Andy to put together a deliciously cohesive eight-track compilation of his works spanning the more recent period of his production career. The LP includes Pyramid Transmission vinyl favorites, cuts only previously available on his digital albums and some pieces released for the very first time.

Club of Jacks come correct with the third and final installment of their RAW EP series - serving up another vinyl 4 tracker of essential House & Garage grooves primed for the dancefloor.

Track 1 'Memories' opens the EP with creamy Rhodes pads leading into a pulsing deep house groove flecked with soulful vocal lines, jazzy piano arps and filtered sax riffs.

The second track 'All I Think About' is a soulful groove built around an emotive vocal hook and chugging analog pads for that end of the night vibe.

On the flip side, 'Pressure Sound' switches style to a bassline roller with vintage reggae vocals, swinging garage drums and dub fx combining into a bouncy party starter.

Finishing off the EP is 'Bug-a-Do', a tough and bumpy hybrid acid-garage-house banger. Filtered synth pads merge with a 303 and M1 piano line - a hands in the air new school / old school workout.

All tracks are produced and mixed by Club of Jacks and made to be played loud wherever you like to jack your body!
