Exit Planet Earth: Hydrogen
Exit Planet Earth: Hydrogen (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EPE 04. Rel: 25 Jan 21
  1. Sync 24 - "The Rising"
  2. Reptant & Dashiell - "Gortexa"
  3. Kosh - "Chaos In The City"
  4. James Shinra - "Launch"
Review: The fourth record in the Exit Planet Earth series features four more exclusive cuts designed for space travel.A

Exit Planet Earth - Hydrogen opens with no-nonsense electro from a master of the trade Sync 24 from Cultivated Electronics. 'The Rising' is an expertly produced bass heavy heater that is crying out to be played on a big rig. Representing Athe Melbourne chapter of the Lizard Tech Militia Reptant teams up with Dashiell for a mutant hybrid electro funk cut - 'Gortexia'.A

On the flip Moroccan heavy hitter Kosh returns to 20/20 Vision following his debut EPl 'Vicious Love'. Kosh offers up an intoxicating blend of deep melodic electro called 'Chaos in the City'. Wrapping the release up is James Shinra returning after his killer 'On & On' EP. Shinra rounds up this edition with an outstanding, unique composition 'Launch' that balances trademark melodies with a truly devastating distorted kick heavy reminiscent of classic Aphex Twin.

Review: Kicking off Damo B's (The Outta Limits Radio Show) new EMOTEC imprint is 'The Orbital Resonance EP' from MOY.
With previous releases on Batrachian, AC Records and Touched Electronix, MOY comes in hard with a perfect start for this new label. With 4 cuts of deep and emotional music the London producer weaves a rich tapestry which straddles deep house, electro and breakbeats with ease, all tied together with cosmic acid lines for the mind and bass lines for the waistlines... this EP has it all!

Exit Planet Earth: Helium  (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: EPE 05. Rel: 08 Mar 21
  1. Carl Finlow - "The Oberth Effect"
  2. Plant43 - "Forcefield Deactivation"
  3. Mr Ho & Xiaolin - "No Change To How I Feel"
  4. Alfred - "Galaxy Quest"
Review: The Exit Planet Earth vinyl series continues onto it's 5th edition with a finely balanced release of electro, techno and breakbeat cuts.A

Carl Finlow - The Oberth Effect kicks off the record with a mind bending trip to the dark side of electro, delivering a masterclass in multi-layered synth sound design, rolling bass lines and Finlow's expert production. A fellow electro master Plant43 delivers his debut release for 20/20 Vision - Forcefield Deactivation following a pioneering run of records over many years for Semantica, Bleep43 and Cultivated Electronics.A

Crossing continents to Asia, the flip side features a collaboration between Hong Kong based producers Mr. Ho & Xiaolin (Klasse Wrecks). 'No Change To How I Feel' is a unique sign of the times. A deep techno track served with a heavy 4/4 kick, perpetually evolving arpeggios, quick fire hats and a haunting vocal. Leeds based producer Alfred completes the release with a sound forged from intricate drum sequencing and strong chords and melodies. Alfred is an exciting new talent that manages to connect the dots between breakbeat and electro.

  2. Get Into It
  3. Selectoor
  4. Illumination
Review: Cologne's Johannes Kolter made his name as DJOKO, but his most recent outing under that alias for Talman Records also included a pair of tracks credited to Kolter. It's that artistic alias he's chosen to use on this single, which introduces the world to debutant imprint PILOT. It's an EP that's well worth checking out, not least for deliciously bass-heavy opener 'Went Too Far', a weighty, stab-happy and sample-heavy affair that recalls the occasional electro tracks made by early blepe & bass and hardcore producers. Garage-influenced breakbeat workout 'Get Into It' is another funk-fuelled treat, while jungle-influenced breaks shuffler 'Selectoor'[sic] is a bass-heavy beast. The German successfully rounds off a fine EP via 'Illumination', which reminded us a little of Orbital's most melodious early moments.

Review: Since breaking through with the colossal 'Anybody From London' on Hotline Recordings five years ago, Boris English AKA Borai has proved to be one of British dance music's more cultured hardcore and jungle revivalists. He's at it again here, too, filling his Vivid label debut with a quartet of sub-heavy, breakbeat-driven bangers dripping in saucer-eyed, rave-style samples. He begins with the sharp riffs, pitched down Amen breaks and booming bass of 'In My Life', before upping the tempo on bustling breaks roller 'Dead Drop'. English doffs his cap to spacey early drum & bass on loose-limbed flipside opener 'Keep Steppin', while closing cut 'C'Mon' is an insanely weighty, pitched-down hardcore bomb.

Review: New Jersey's Toothgrinder have been active since 2010, hitting their stride with their debut album Nocturnal Masquerade in 2016 and following it up sharply with Phantom Amour. Quite rightly their breakthrough album, it saw the band amp up all aspects of their sound, from the powerful pop-minded harmonizing to the hyper-sheen of the guitars. Embracing an electronic attitude to production that adds a hi-tech finish to their full-fat, emo-tinged songs, it's a perfect document of a band with a lot to say and an irrepressible energy. Now repressed dude to popular demand, the album once again takes up three sides, with the fourth given over to an etching.

  4. Hold Tight
Review: Following some essential drops from the likes of Etch and Yosh, Vivid welcome Tamoshi into the fold for some sweet and cerebral trips through cut up breaks and moody soundscapes. "Come In" keeps things meditative thanks to harmonious pads lingering in the distance behind the amen chops, while "Check One" has a certain cheekiness not least round the low end. "Five" gets a little breakstep wriggle in its groove, but there's just as much focus on the other old-skool tropes that make up Tamoshi's sound. "Hold Tight" gets further towards 2-step rhythmic accents as it charges forth, sealing the deal on a laser-focused, bassweight record for all the breaks heads to get lively to.

  1. North Phase - "Feel It"
  2. North Phase - "Escape From Planet X"
  3. Kolter - "B2R"
  4. Kolter - "Systematic"
Review: Earlier in the year, we heaped tons of praise on the booming, breakbeat-driven first EP from Pilot, which showcased a quartet of killer cuts from Johannes Kolter. He returns to action on this EP, taking control of the B-side to offer-up the funky, sample-heavy electro/breaks fusion of 'B2R' (think Layo & Bushwacka's classic material and you're close) and the more spacey, electro-focused bubbliness of 'Systematic'. While they're both very good, we'd argue that North Phase's A-side tracks are even better. Choose between the dubby and hypnotic breakbeat-house roll of 'Feel It', and 'Escape From Planet X', a deeper, more bass-heavy chunk of breakbeat pleasure that comes complete with fizzing electronic noises, deep bass and some suitably trippy synth sounds.

Review: New York ravers' family favorite Club Night Club announce their inaugural release as a record label. The first offering comes courtesy of Manchester heavyweight Herron. The meandyou founder and Soup Kitchen owner follows up last year's 'Box Of Swords' EP for Peder Mannerfelt with a gritty four tracker aimed squarely at the dance floor. On 'Lowflow' we see him develop similar sludgy Uk techno mutations to his 2016 CO/R collaboration with Joy Orbison, but this time with more explicit peak time intent. The Hi-Fi, sleazy chug core is ever present, but particularly on the A side, a freneticism of breaks pressure and pummeling sound design is let loose. In keeping with the name of A2's Velcro Spider, the record weaves a complex blend of the synthetic and heartfelt. Stumbling, low slung grooves mutate over the course of each track, quietly building and sustaining a tension the listener is unaware of until all hell breaks loose at the last minute in true drug chug fashion.

Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.
