Review: Hip hop super group Run The Jewels aka Brooklyn-based rapper-producer El-P and Atlanta-based rapper Killer Mike continue to turn out new albums that continue to get a great reception. But at the same time, their old albums are still much sought after and so are being reissued. Run The Jewels 2 first came back in 2014 and received widespread acclaim from critics. They appreciated its darker, more layered production and Killer Mike and El-P's lyricism and chemistry and its guest contributions from the likes of Zach de la Rocha, Travis Barker and Diane Coffee.

Review: Here's an all-time classic to kick back and roll a fat one to. 1996 was a landmark time for trip-hop and downtempo, and alongside DJ Shadow's Endtroducing came this silky smooth delight from Japanese turntablist maestro DJ Krush and jazz trumpeter Toshinori Kondo. Smoky beats and laconic chord licks form the perfect backdrop to Kondo's muted trumpet, and the mood just unfurls from the get-go in a brilliant reimagining of what lounge jazz could be in the fusion-fuelled 1990s. It's a benchmark which has been often imitated and rarely bettered, more than worthy of a remaster and repress on double vinyl.

Review: New to Soundway Records comes this second edition of Ghana Special, a comprehensive compilation of '80s Ghanaian-diasporic highlife and its embrace of synthesiser and new wave elements. 20 years on from the first compilation in the series, which was released in 2009 and focused on modern and contemporary forms of highlife, this second volume focuses more on tracing the development of the sound as it took on increasingly synthetic forms. The scheme of things goes something like this: drum machines and synthesisers appeared alongside lilting guitar lines and punchy horns, and Ghanaian musicians began incorporating US disco and boogie, r&b, European new wave, and Caribbean zouk and soca into their music. A kind of socioeconomic history lesson conjoins this musicology: the eighties saw unrestricted migration policies in Western nations in the postcolonial era, which enabled new crossover industries to flourish. Thus the music you hear on this compilation was born, and thrived, and continues to thrive.

Review: For the first time in a decade and a half, Kansas City-born multi-instrumentalist Nathan Davis is having his If album reissued. It first came on the respected educator and musician's own Tomorrow International label in 1976 but now arrives on Japanese favourite P-VINE. Any true jazz-funk and rare groover head will be familiar with its unique charms and anyone not soon will be in love. Only 100 copies of this were pressed up back in the day which is why it has become so hard to find and such a cult classic. Do not sleep on this one.

Review:  A whole bunch of Weldon Irvine albums are being remastered and reissued at the moment, which will be music to the ears of spiritual jazz fans - literally. The American composer and pianists was one of the big names of his time and reals don labels like RCA and Strata-East as well as his own label. Young Gifted & Broke has never been on vinyl before as the recordings were only discovered in the early 2010s. It was a musical that was released in 1977 and inspired by the Black Civil Rights anthem 'Young, Gifted and Black,' which Weldon had written with Nina Simone. Talents like Marcus Miller joined the recordings which as can now be heard are magnificent to say the least.

Review: If there was one artist that the electronic music community could point to as their bridge to hip-hop and instrumental urban music, it has to be DJ Krush. For over 30 plus years now he has been a foremost name in the scene and Saisei is his latest full-length album, being released by his own label DJ Krush Recordings. Many of the 13 tracks are more than just hip-hop instrumental music - many verge on soundtrack-like and have a cultural influence to them as well. But make no mistake, you'll get some bangers like 'Kimei' too and we especially like the IDM feel in 'Soushouka' also. You can always trust DJ Krush to take you on a trip and back.

Review: Vultures, Kanye West's collaborative effort with Ty Dolla $ign, arrives amid a tumultuous period for the legendary rapper and despite controversies surrounding his personal life and erratic behavior, the album shows a surprising completeness. The production is polished, showcasing West's improved technical precision as a rapper. The writing is on point, with creative versus found throughout the album. Review: Jazz Room reissue the infamous first mini-album by Abacothozi. Formed in 1973 by bassist Berthwel Maphumulo, Mac Mathunjwa on organ, Innocent Mathunjwa on drums, Joe Zikhali on guitar, Thema Maboneng was released in 1975, before being almost immediately forgotten. However, a recent rediscovery by diggers and curators Kon & Amir, for their lauded Off The Track Volume Two: Queens compilation, sparked a renewed interest; the South African four-piece shared equal responsibility in writing and arranging these six instrumentals, which are tight and full, and come replete with Hammonds, well-surrounded guitar, and cross-sticking snare hits.

Review: JPEGMAFIA's Veteran is a confrontational and glitchy masterpiece, both musically and politically charged. Drawing inspiration from Ol' Dirty Bastard's experimentalism, the album delves into themes of racism, gentrification, and internet culture with unapologetic fervor. Entirely self-produced, the album showcases JPEGMAFIA's adept ability to use of sound and texture, weaving together frayed elements into a cohesive and atmospheric whole. Tracks like 'Baby I'm Bleeding' and 'Panic Emoji' exemplify the album's sonic chaos, with distortion and fragmentation used percussively and melodically. JPEGMAFIA's delivery is equally dynamic, seamlessly transitioning between singing and rapping, often on the same track. His lyrical prowess shines on 'Williamsburg,' where he paints a vivid portrait of gentrification's cold and industrial reality. JPEGMAFIA's music remains firmly rooted in his unique perspective, making Veteran a breathless and essential addition to the hip-hop landscape.

Review: The Unreleased Album by The Horne Section, originally recorded during the years of 1983-1985, offers a vibrant fusion of funk, soul, disco and boogie. This US boogiefunk studio project stayed unreleased for a few decades until 2010, when these gems were collected for release. Each track exudes infectious energy and groove, with funky basslines, soulful melodies, and irresistible rhythms. The seamless integration of horns adds depth and texture, elevating the overall listening experience. From start to finish, the album delivers a captivating blend of retro charm and contemporary flair. Disco, house and funk fans can now enjoy this amazing find.

Review: LP! marked the fourth studio album by esteemed Baltimore rapper JPEGMAFIA. Dropping back in October 2021 and coinciding with his 32nd birthday, the record boasts collaborations with DatPiMaa, Kimbra, and Tkay Maidza and picked up plenty of acclaim from Pitchfork, NME, and others. Lyrically, it delves into JPEG's struggles within the music industry while maintaining his own sense of authenticity. Fully self-produced, it epitomizes his artistic ethos and comes after he has amassed over 1.5 million monthly Spotify listeners and a 500K+ strong Instagram following. As such with this album, JPEGMAFIA has solidified his status as a leading figure in contemporary and experimental hip hop.

Review: The history of hip-hop has always had some disagreements on who started what and in the creation and evolution of the genre. One piece of history that seems to get overlooked is the transition from radio to TV that helped the music move from a regional activity to a national and cultural phenomenon. While the big New York radio stations took the credit, Spectrum City was doing its own thing just down the road. Not only did it feature a show by Dre Dre and T-Money (which would later evolve it to MTV YO Raps!) but it showcased the birth of Public Enemy as well. Originally released in 2021 on promo, these tracks pay respect to Public Enemy's earlier days when the original group was just getting started at Spectrum City, and if you'reconfused by the name Enemy Radio, note that the legendary rap crew changed to it after the departure of Flavor Flav from the group.

Review: Led by recent single 'Yeern 101', Blue Lips marks Schoolboy Q's sixth studio album, a crowning achievement for a rapper now entering the for-the-ages establishing era of his career. Following up 2019's Crash Talk, it's been a good five years, with Q flexxing his ability to take his time; in the run-up, the rapper commented on this decision to move slowly but surely by clarifying that he does not view releasing music as a sport. Despite this claim, Q still flaunts a lavish lifestyle here, yet still manages to spare no sense of humility, chopping and changing between flows while appearing to critique said stereotyped lifestyle from the inside. Instrumentally, it's dark and tinged in a navy-dyed smoke, taking production risks (the slow muted soul of 'Blueslides' is as tender as Q has ever sounded) and stylistic meanders across Mustardy ratchet, dusty crate-dug flips, and even jungle (!) on 'Foux'.

Review: The reissued Ghetto Pop Life remains a special release to DM + Jemini's fans that showed their ability to bridge the gap between hip-hop's mainstream and underground scenes. The duo's collaboration defies conventional hip-hop politics, focusing instead on delivering a leftfield album that blends playful beats with clever wordplay. Danger Mouse's production acts as a counterweight, crafting soundscapes that draw from hip-hop's history while avoiding regression into old-school tropes. The album's standout tracks, such as 'Born-a-MC' and 'The Only One,' feature infectious hooks and cinematic tones that capture the essence of a guilt-free block party vibe. 20 years later, this album still holds up very well.

Review: Canada's famously vibrant funk scene has given rise to many gems over the years and now one of them is getting a reissue on P-Vine complete with an obi-strip. The Sidewinders' much-coveted album, Flatfoot Hustlin' is a real gem that emanates the spirit of deep-rooted funk. Famously it was recorded in the same studio as Professor Lett and Study's Love Serenade which further details about it have long been unknown and mysterious. That has only added to its allure and appeal amongst the rare groove community but of course, the music itself is the real draw. Featured tracks like 'I Like To Dance' and 'Flat Foot Hustli'' cannot fail to ignite dancefloors, while 'Time For Loving' is a more smooth groove and 'Gift to the Sun' gets nice and heavy making this an essential cop for funk aficionados.

Review: Chicago was a hotbed for talent in the 1970s (well, it always has been and always will be, to be honest) and one of the groups to emerge at that time was Heaven & Earth, a vital soul vocal collective. They released four high-quality albums and this one, 'I Can't Seem To Forget You', was the first on Clarence Johnson's G.E.C. Label. It is packed with super sweet vocals and Dwight Dukes' lush falsetto and has never before been reissued. This version from the good folks at P-VINE has an extra bonus cut 'Promises,' which has previously only been available as a single from 1975.

Review: Karate Boogaloo's latest album, Hold Your Horses, offers a captivating collection of original instrumental tunes from Melbourne, Australia's vibrant soul scene. The album's lead single 'One Hand One Bounce' sets the tone with its spacious and introspective vibe, all moody dynamics that draw the listener in. Drawing from influences like Booker T & The MG's and The Meters, Karate Boogaloo infuse their music with a blend of cinematic tension, whimsical melodies, and eerie discordance, all underpinned by heavy funk grooves. The band's chemistry, developed over 15+ years of friendship and musical collaboration, shines through each track, creating a cohesive, immersive listening experience. Recorded live with no overdubs, Hold Your Horses captures the raw energy and spontaneity of Karate Boogaloo's performances. The instrumental palete, limited to drums, guitar, bass and organ, establishes a consistent tone while allowing for neat shifts and nuanced execution.

Review: Tilt your shades down and settle into some of the smoothest songs money can buy courtesy of Ned Doheny on this reissue of his 1988 album Life After Romance. He might be best known for 'Give It Up For Love', but Doheny has a catalogue overflowing with silken cuts and this, his fourth long player, gathers together some of the finest. From the slinky 'Whatcha Gonna Do For Me?' to soft rock masterclass 'Follow Your Heart' this is a sophisticated listen for those who value true song craft, and it sounds better than ever on this reissue courtesy of the good folk at P-Vine.

Review: Ray & His Court's self-titled album, is a rare gem in the realm of Latin funk. Led by the late Ray Fernandez, this family band from Miami brought a unique blend of influences to their music, incorporating elements of deep funk, soul, calypso, Afro-Cuban, and salsa. What set them apart was their versatility and unconventional instrumentation, utilizing a bass clarinet instead of saxophones and Osi drums from Africa instead of bongos. The album's fusion of psychedelic vibes with Latin rhythms captivated listeners and left an indelible mark on Miami's Latin music scene in the late 70s. Sampled by DJs worldwide, including the renowned DJ Shadow, Ray & His Court's music continues to resonate with audiences today. This newly remastered vinyl reissue, pressed on audiophile virgin vinyl, offers a pristine listening experience for aficionados of Latin, funk, and rare groove music. With its infectious grooves and innovative arrangements, Ray & His Court's album remains an important addition to any discerning collector's library.

It is a debut project from the latter two that has the entire soundscape crafted by Havoc, which explains why it very much has a similarly vibe to that of his legendary 90s outfit. Review: Soweto to Harlem highlights a unique moment in musical history, where the paths of American jazz legend Hal Singer and South African saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi intersected. Produced by Rashid Vally in 1976, this album stands as a testament to the power of collaboration across borders. The title track, inspired by Singer's journey from Soweto to Harlem, sets the tone for the entire recording, blending elements of rhythm and blues with a laid-back yet cheeky vibe. Singer's quartet delivers a nostalgic and soulful performance, with each track exuding a sense of camaraderie and musical excellence. While initially only available in South Africa, Soweto to Harlem now serves as a cherished artifact of cultural exchange and musical innovation, showcasing the enduring legacy of two jazz pioneers.

Review: JPEGMAFIA's All My Heroes Are Cornballs is a departure from his earlier work, showcasing a sprawling collage of influences and pop culture totems. While his past projects sometimes obscured this scope with adrenalized politics, this album lays bare the breadth of his creative influences. Adopting gendered terms and staging songs from diverse perspectives, JPEG fearlessly explores identity and expression. As a producer, he creates hyper-syncretic songs that blend disparate sounds seamlessly, turning friction into motion. Sequences blossom fully, with tracks like 'Kenan Vs. Kel' effortlessly shifting through keyboard melodies and crunchy power chords. 'Grimy Waifu' exemplifies this approach, blending gun ode lyrics with gorgeous instrumentation. All My Heroes Are Cornballs is a trippy, earnest journey into JPEG's interdimensional mind showing his fearlessness and creativity.

Review: Strictly Leakage by Atmosphere is a free internet download that serves as a gift to fans, showcasing the Minnesota duo's strengths in self-aware party-rocking and battle-rap aggression. The album, released as a complement to a series of EPs, features Slug's charismatic and confident delivery over Ant's sample-heavy production reminiscent of late 1980s and early 90s beats. Despite its party-centered themes, Strictly Leakage maintains a reflective and philosophical tone, with tracks like 'The Things That Hate Us' offering tongue-in-cheek commentary on indulgences and societal issues. Slug's storytelling prowess shines on tracks like 'Little Math You,' where he challenges perceptions of identity and authenticity in rap. Skinner's awkward yet charming delivery, paired with a minimalist musical backdrop, draws listeners into a story of loss, love and self-discovery. From the mundane to the profound, Skinner captures the essence of human experience with bare honesty and endearing intimacy, evoking both laughter and tears - quite literally in the case of its biggest hit, 'Dry Your Eyes'. With its focus on the minutiae of life and the importance of connection, A Grand Don't Come for Free remains a timeless and compelling album that is worth revisiting often and now is offered on a new reissued for 2024.

Review: Arriving on lovely forest green vinyl, Standing On Giant Shoulders is the superb new album from Seafood Sam, a modern marvel who defies categorisation. Hailing from North Long Beach, he embodies a fusion of contradictions that define true originality as he seamlessly blends rap, soulful vocals, and masterful production and does so with effortless flair. Picture him cruising in vintage Cadillacs, indulging in caviar with a blade tucked away and exuding timeless charm in classic Pelle Pelle attire as you listen to this record which suggests he is an enigmatic figure who channels the spirit of blaxploitation icons into the digital era, fusing 90s lyrical prowess with futuristic swagger. In an age craving authenticity, Seafood Sam emerges as a beacon of modern heroism.

Review: $uicideboy$'s New World Depression is a raw and unapologetic dive into the depths of inner turmoil and societal disillusionment. Released on the G59 label, this LP presents a world where existential crises and inner demons reign supreme. The duo fearlessly confronts themes of fame, self-destruction, and the relentless pursuit of identity in the face of chaos. This album resonates with anyone who has ever felt lost or battled with their own shadows. Review: Well, would you look at that: lo-fi hip-hop has already become LP-worthy. It doesn't seem like long ago at all that the genre seemed eternally bound to its stereotyped form: ten-hour YouTube videos of endlessly looping lo-fi beats paired visually with anime characters perusing the textbooks over mugs of cocoa, cute kittens brushing against their knees, and snow-caked views outside their windows. Light In The Attic colour anyone thinking that such a style couldn't possibly make it onto vinyl LP mistaken, catching us off guard with this second edition from Grey October Sounds' Timeless LoFi project. This one hears the Japanese producer bring beautiful remixes of classic Studio Ghibili theme songs - as well as original compositions - to P-Vine recordings. Choice cuts include the eyes-down bare-bones of 'Y&A' and the muted snaps of 'Home Banter'. So, assuming you've already crammed for the test tomorrow, feel free to relax and swap out your well-worn, coffee-stained textbook for an MPC.

Review: Skilled Trade by Apollo Brown offers a glimpse into the early work of the renowned producer, showing his talent long before his Red Bull Big Tune Championship win and signing to Mello Music Group. Released in 2007, this beat collection demonstrates Brown's mastery of simplicity in production, eschewing elaborate sample choices for familiar yet skillfully arranged material. Despite its simplicity, Skilled Trade exudes a timeless quality that highlights Brown's innate ability to craft instrumentals. Each track resonates with a raw authenticity that speaks to Brown's early genius, setting the stage for his future successes. For listeners unfamiliar with Apollo Brown's early work, Skilled Trade serves as a perfect introduction to his signature sound and artistic vision.
