Review: A decade ago, German brothers Frank and Christian Berman created a genuinely overlooked masterpiece: an album that combined classic vocal and instrumental performances from soul, jazz and funk performers (extracted from multi-track tapes of the original recordings) with new Brazilian-flavoured backing tracks featuring some of Brazil's most famous and storied musicians. The album, credited to Studio Rio, kicked off with this: a shuffling, samba-fired version of Bill Withers' classic 'Lovely Day' that's arguably even sunnier and more positive than the great man's original soul recording. It's a genuinely brilliant version, all told, and one that sounds like a summer festival and end-of-night anthem in the making. Mr Bongo thinks so - hence this must-have 7" single that pairs the vocal version with a previously unreleased instrumental take.

Review: The shadowy Edit & Dub crew don't talk about their releases, so it can be difficult to ascertain whether the tracks they're showcasing are long-lost originals, or new edits of ridiculously rare records. Either way, the label's latest EP features versions of some seriously hard to find treats, starting with a fine 'extended disco instrumental' of Sanctuary's 'Disconnect', a fine disco-boogie jam from 1980. They then deliver a (we think) previously unreleased 'extended disco' mix of Willie J & Co's killer 1976 disco-funk gem 'Boogie With Your Baby'. On the B-side we're treated to two takes on the mysterious 'Familiar Time and Place' by Uknown Tapes: a 'Chicago Mix' which sounds like late 80s Windy City acid house smothered in spacey deep house chords and intergalactic electronics and the mid-80s techno-tinged 'Detroit Mix'.

Review: Timmy Thomas' Why Can't We Live Together is a timeless soul classic that got some remix treatment in 1981. Originally released in 1972, the track's message of unity and love is still relevant today, and Liebrand's remixes gave it a modern disco edge that appealed to new listeners fans of dance music. The story, according to Ben Liebrand himself, goes: "This is a mashup/bootleg mix of Timmy Thomas and T-Connection's At Midnight made by yours truly. The Belgian record company 'took' this mix, had this Mike sing on top of it and released it as their own. When people started to realize the 'origins' of this mix, the company re-recorded everything, fed the new versions amongst the illegal versions, and thus conveniently obscured the amount of 'bootleg-versions' sold." As ever the foundations are solid on the opener 'Passenger' - smooth drums and bass perfectly sit with one another, but this one really comes alive with the most impossibly subtle but inescapably uplifting little chords that suggest that no matter what shit you have going on in your life, things will be OK. It's a classic amongst many on this label. 'With That' is another tight, compelling and tech tinged dub roller with real bite and drive, and 'Treading Water' then blisses you out with its liquid chords and sense of endless infinite groove.

Review: First released way back in 1982 but exceedingly hard to find ever since, Intrigue's 'I Like It' is a classic slab of Brit-funk era UK boogie whose lyrics playfully muse on craving cash when you have very little ("I really want your love but I'd rather have the money and I like it"). This Backactcha Records reissue features both versions from the original 12" - the EP-leading full vocal mix and the longer, more club-focused flip-side instrumental - as well as what appears to be a previously unreleased remix. This builds up brilliantly via drums and short rap sections before introducing the killer basslibe, pianos, synths and lead vocals. It's a fantastic and arguably more club-ready take on a much-loved but previously impossible-to-find Brit-boogie classic.

Review: Italian label Panick Panick! might be best known for carrying releases from the likes of Noha and Elon, but now they're welcoming the mighty Carl Finlow to the fold. There's always an electroid streak to the legendary producer's sound, but he's equally tipped towards the steady thump of 4/4 on this particular outing. That doesn't dilute the imaginative brushstrokes of his immaculate production one jot, best demonstrated on the sparkling 'Count On It' with its rich layers of modulating synth work. Noha offers reinterpretations of both original tracks on the B side, edging in a little more Euro techno functionality without dampening the flamboyant spirit of Finlow's production style.

Review: Colombian artist DFRA links with some of Argentina's finest musicians for a high-class mix of 90s and 00s deep house and a wide array of proper jazz stylings to this new EP on Deeppa, a well-formed young label that will soon hit release number 10. 'Sal Marina' kicks off with shuffling beats and nu-jazz chords that make you want to move, while both 'Green Line' and 'Manits' showcase some superb melodies over more percussive, busy beats that have a great sense of movement. 'Brown Sugar' then gets a little deeper with its withering cosmic lines and heartfelt vocals and the main man Atjazz works ii onto something even more potent before 'Sal Marina (Lay-Far remix)' closes down with a timeless soulful house vibe.

Review: One for the ages. UK label Backatcha does an impressive curatorial job on this reissue of Popsicle's timeless disco-funk instrumental mini-classic, 'Little Rocker', which was first released in 1983 and has gone down in time as an 'extremely scarce' one. Of course, most economists will tell you that scarcity is what lends this kind of thing its credo; indeed, while the original issue of this record barely surfaces on online marketplaces, Backatcha's efforts do just as well to propagate the furtive enjoyment of this gem, putting out a similarly limited quantity on 12" and yet injecting just enough wax into circulation to keep its snappy, impactful intromissions going strong.

Review: Veteran electrohead and former artist on the Rephlex Records roseter DMX Krew's Ed DMX takes the well-known story by Jorge Luis Borges of The Library of Babel, said to contain all the different languages of the earth. Some deep philosophical thought has gone into the album's concept, but we'll leave that to Ed to explain. Instead, we'll tell you that from beginning to end there's plenty of the kind of trademark 80s synth playfulness in evidence, with a generally more mellow and soundtrack-related rather than frenetic and dancefloor-filling vibe in evidence, even on faster tracks like 'The Combed Thunderclap'. Still, Ed knows what he's doing when it comes to this kind of leftfield electro gear, and it's a rewarding, never boring listen.

Review: Setting aside the tired old debates about what does and doesn't count as Balearic - at this point, that's down to the listener - the hard-to-describe genre does at least lend itself to the humble re-edit. If 'anything goes', then nothing is off limits. The shadowy Balearic London crew put that to the test on this versatile and rather good selection of reworks. They begin by slightly pitching down, tooling up and dubbing out pop 'classic' the Macarena on 'Mac & (Less) Cheese', before heading into safer Balearic territory via the glistening guitars, rubbery grooves and wide-eyed sound effects of 'Release The Hounds!' Elsewhere, 'Cities of Gold' is an extra-percussive slab of deep instrumental synth-pop/proto-house excellence, while 'Stellar Style' does a fine job in re-framing and tweaking an AOR pop gem from the early-to-mid 80s.

First up it is German minimal maestro Isolee who flips 'Fade' into some of his signature sounds - smeared synths and abstract designs all weave together over a minimal beat to make for something seductive and late night. Polish loop master Jan Jelinek then flips 'Fade' into a slow motion shuffle with bright, celestial shards of melodic light and downbeat, melancholic vocals over a chugging beat. Last of all is a mix of 'Jing' that is all broken loops, chopped vocal fragments and hallucinogenic synths.

Review: Since launching in 2018, the Belpaese imprint has delivered a string of must-check EPs featuring re-edits of old Italian songs and instrumentals. It's a bit of a niche pursuit, but given the country's contribution to dance music culture over the years one that makes total sense. Volume ten in the series arrives with two sweat-soaked cut-jobs to enjoy. 'Ancora Un Baccio' is a quirky and eccentric Italo-disco number that boasts both rubbery slap-bass (including some energetic soloing) and surging electronic bass, alongside suitably camp lead vocals and heady vocalisations. 'Un Sogno Per La Testa' is a bit more Balearic minded, with the shadowy scalpel fiends making merry with what sounds like a holiday-ready 1980s pop song full of glistening guitar licks, jazz-funk bass and unfussy beats.

Review: Backatcha continues to delve into the back catalogue of British 80s soul outfit Intrigue, a combo born in the Britfunk and boogie era whose independently released records have long been sought-after by disco diggers and record collectors alike. Having already reissued the band's best-known tune, 1982's 'I Like It', they've now turned their attention to a more overlooked gem: 1986 single 'One Touch'. Glossy, colourful and effortlessly soulful, it's a fine chunk of polished, club-ready 80s street soul with nods to electrofunk. Flipside 'Touch Down', a more extended affair, is an alternative, largely instrumental dub mix that adds layers of effects to key elements while stretching out the synth-heavy groove.

Review: While nowhere near as celebrated as some of his NYC contemporaries, Tommy Musto made some incredible music at the turn of the 90s, flitting between breakbeat-driven, techno-tinged heaviness and heady, sample-rich house. The Lost Dubs Volume 1 takes us back to that period via a quartet of contemporaneous cuts recently unearthed in the producer's vaults. There's much to admire throughout, from the driving, bass-heavy hedonism of 'Holdin' On', a track propelled forwards by insatiable organ riffs and breathless beats, and the extra-percussive early morning headiness of 'Baby's Right' - all delay-laden Rhodes licks, funky bass guitar, mazy synth solos and Masters At Work style house beats - to the Victor Simonelli style saucer-eyed warmth of 'Love Is Needed' and the sleazy, Kenny Dope style heaviness of 'Keep It Movin'. Review: Detroit's Limited Network label has been receiving a well-earned buzz since their inception and now they are back celebrating with their tentth edition called 'The Silver Lining EP'. Label owner Max Watts presents the title track on the A-side. This is pure Detroit goodness with keys that remind us of classic Derrick May tracks. Harnessing the post-apocalyptic to the tee, this is sure to garner lots of praise from veterans and the young alike. For the B-side, Max brings in fellow Detroit producer Huey Mnemonic for a strong collaboration on the stylish 'Echoes of Change'. Then closing things out, Huey adds a high energy funk remix to that same offering. Both are tracky and upbeat gems that remind us of works by Steve Rachmad. Throwing around comparisons like that is not something we do lightly. These have all the makings of a classic!

Review: The Roxy in Covent Garden, London, was the centre of the punk scene in 1977 and the UK Subs were one of many whose appaearances at the tony club launched them to lengthy careers. Originally recorded on New Years in 1977, this live album was originally released in 1991, showing the band - Charlie Harper on vocals, Nicky Garratt on guitar, Steve Slack on bass and Rory Lyons on drums - in their infancy. Known for their short, energy and often alcohol-driven songs, the band built a strong following for decades after, but that UK punk attitude is already very much in evidence in all its gnarly glory here.

Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

Review: Omakase, which is the name of a style of Japanese dining that means literally 'I leave it up to you' and gives full control of a meal to the chef in question, is also now an ever more vital minimal label. This is its third outing and one with Antraum at the helm. It kick off with 'Hyaku' with its bluesy vocal samples and lazy, infectious drum loops, then has 'Shichi' has more silky and spaced out pads and smooth grooves. 'Rei' is a dreamy one with balmy chords making for a trippy late night day dream and is the sort of track that will zoned out dance floors at 5 am. A tasteful EP for sure.

He shows why he is healed in such high regard with this new three-track EP which kicks off with 'Hypnotic Grayscale,' a nice sleek and elegant minimal roller carefully detailed with aloof vocal sounds. 'Everything That Is Seen' is bright and subtly uplifting with wispy melodies adding a celestial touch and 'He Restored My Soul' then brings a little more otherworldly charm with its woozy pads and smeared vocals over floating and liquid rhythms.
