Into Dark Water
Into Dark Water (140 gram vinyl LP)
Cat: ERC 080. Rel: 10 Feb 20
Ambient/Drone
  1. Ascension (5:56)
  2. Rite Of Passage (2:30)
  3. Raindance (7:11)
  4. Ba-makala (4:41)
  5. Cloud Cover (5:54)
  6. Musica Ficta (3:31)
  7. Out Of Nothing (6:14)
  8. Steppe Land (6:42)
Review: Following on from the excellent "Scene In Mirage" reissue that broke O Yuki Conjugate to a whole new crowd, Emotional Rescue return to the archives of the over-looked Nottingham "dirty ambient" outfit. Their second LP "Into Dark Water", originally released in 1987, is just as powerful as the first - a hypnagogic journey fuelled by a global stew of sound, feeding into elegant, evocative pieces. Fans of classic Jon Hassell will find much to enjoy here, but equally those appreciating the exotic post punk undercurrents of 23 Skidoo et al will easily find themselves drawn to the likes of "Ba-makala". Stunning, borderless musings from a hidden treasure of the UK's post-industrial heritage.

Manifold (140 gram vinyl double 12")

  3. Shadow Union (5:15)
  4. Isotropic (6:15)
  5. Manifold (6:23)
  6. Mystica (6:12)
  7. Cyclical Pathway (5:36)
  8. Ambrosia (7:13)
Review: REPRESS ALERT: Versalife continues a prolific run of deep and dynamic electro soul with this double pack on 20/20 Vision. The scene is set early on with the smoky pads and crisp drums of "Binary Worlds" - equal parts deep-diving machine soul and body-popping 808 funk. Things get nastier with the strafing monosynth punctuating "Covert Ops" and the edgy creep of "Shadow Union" on to "Manifold"s luxuriant sound world. The quality level remains staggeringly high as we trip through classically informed electro of every shade, adding yet another accomplished payload to the formidable Versalife catalogue.

  3. Duppy (6:31)

  7. Kring II (locked groove) (0:50)
  8. Kring I (locked groove) (0:43)
Review: Malin Genie's purple patch continues to yield more delights with this latest drop on his self-titled label. This time around the prolific Dutch artist is delving into smoky, hidden corners of house music where dub lingers thick in the air and rough textures scuff depth and character into the synth work. "Aventijn" has a purposeful drum machine tick but its utterly somnambulant in its execution, while "KIAR" lilts on a dusty groove and woozy clouds of funk. "Duppy" has a distinct dub techno influence, but it's still a steadfast house groover at heart, and "Amulius Numitor" ditches the beats for a pure interstellar exploration. With some bonus locked grooves for creative DJs, this is a versatile and imaginatively rendered EP with creative spark to match its usefulness in the mix.

Sipoor
Sipoor (12")
Cat: PH 69.
Techno
  1. Sipoor (6:09)
  2. Teroof (6:29)
  3. Bad Time Story (5:30)
Review: When we saw this new one by power duo Red Axes appearing on Phantasy Sound, we thought it was about time. The Israeli duo's distinct brand of indie-dance would surely be right at up Erol Alkan's alley - and they deliver the goods yet again on the Sipoor EP. The title track is undoubtedly the most 'techy' we've ever heard them, on this deep and tunnelling rave journey. Bleepy aesthetics make a return on "Teroof" but merge wonderfully with their renowned brand of punk funk. Finally on the flip, we have the brooding "Bad Time Story" going out all guns blazing, with some euphoric 303 acid over thunderous toms - it's something that sounds like Hardfloor meets Barnt.

Take Over (reissue)
Take Over (reissue) (white vinyl 12" 再プレス)
Cat: UR 346WHITE.
International
  1. Take Over (7:31)
  2. Take Over (Less Patient edit) (5:21)
  3. Bounce & Pull Up (feat Evan Laflamme) (7:54)
Review: Having landed his debut album Bosq Y Orchestra De Madera on Ubiquity Records back in 2013, Bosq will be returning with his second long player on the Californian label later this year. Take Over is the second 12" laid down as a precursor of what Bosq has up his sleeve and the Boston-based Whisky Baron is certainly on good form. Known for his towering vocal contributions to Fela's Egypt 80, Benin-born / Nigerian-raised singer Kaleta once again lines a Bosq production in lead cut "Take Over", and it might just be their heaviest collaboration yet! The Less Patient edit adds a bit of dancefloor weight to the track. Flip for the dense, delay heavy afrobeat burner "Bounce And Pull Up" which features some devilish horns from Evan Laflamme.
