Spin (NAD Reversion)
Spin (NAD riddim reprise)
Review: Back in 2019, Emotional Rescue began a series where it licensed some all-time favourites, remastered them and pressed them up with new remixes by modern producers. It now draws to a close after many fine instalments with early 80s band The Impossible Dreamers. Their cult 'Spin' arrives here with an epic nine-minute extended reversion that is heavy on the dub and percussion and also an even more dubcentric reprise from regular label artist Dan Tyler of Idjut Boys and Noid fame, her under his NAD guise. There is plenty of raw and raucous rhythm to this 12" that will enliven any dancefloor and round out this series in style.

Review: While he generally doesn't get the plaudits lavished on some of his Motor City contemporaries, Gari Romalis has long been one of Detroit's most reliable deep house producers (remarkably, he released his first EP 29 years ago). His latest four-tracker, for the reliable Phonogramme Records, is packed to the rafters with spacey, immersive, ultra-deep body music of the sort that moves the heart and head as much as the feet. For proof, check the dub-flecked deep house/tech-house fusion of 'Detroit V.I.P' - all subterranean bass, ghostly chords, rolling house beats and delay-flecked spoken word vocals - and the similarly minded but more percussively energetic 'Scatter Dance'. Elsewhere, 'Stay Ready' is thickset, trippy and hypnotic, while 'City Under Siege' is marginally brighter and breezier whilst remaining formidably deep.

Review: Previously unreleased, Joe Bataan (real name Bataan Nitollano) recorded the bulk of the material making up Drug Story in 1972. This new, highly limited box set hears seven revered, rarely-heard gems of Latin jazz, deep soul, raucous boogaloo, and heavy salsa by the legend, most of which were largely salvaged from his very own self-run Ghetto Records vaults. Drug Story was inspired by true events, and hears Bataan croon graciously over themes of destitution, lost family members and friends, and addiction. One of three definitive reissues of Bataan's greatest works, licensed from Bataan himself, with his oversight and input into a 15 page oversized book by Pablo Yglesia,s that details Bataan's larger-than-imagination life and his little Latin label that could.

Review: A new special edition release from Traumer is always worth hearing, especially when it has been two years since the last one. This one is another perfect masterclass in precise, stripped back grooves and it come son limited edition hand stamped 12". Opener 'Would We' is a dubbed out and loopy affair with nice deft chord smears, then 'Six's Vibe' picks up the pace with a more busy and driven drum line but still its of lush dub chords. 'Attenuation' closes out with another smooth causing groove that is warmed by the deft pad work and exudes real machine soul.

Review: Barac is one of the torchbearers for the contemporary minimal scene and a figurehead of the Romanian scene. He shows why he is healed in such high regard with this new three-track EP which kicks off with 'Hypnotic Grayscale,' a nice sleek and elegant minimal roller carefully detailed with aloof vocal sounds. 'Everything That Is Seen' is bright and subtly uplifting with wispy melodies adding a celestial touch and 'He Restored My Soul' then brings a little more otherworldly charm with its woozy pads and smeared vocals over floating and liquid rhythms.

Review: In her album The Tortured Poets Department, the seemingly universally adored Taylor Swift masterfully delves into real depths of emotion with plenty of her trademark raw vulnerability. Each track is an exploration of love, loss, and self-discovery, which up to now has always resonated deeply with her fan base. Swift's lyrical prowess shines as she navigates themes of heartbreak and resilience, accompanied by rich melodies that tug at the heartstrings. The album is a fine document of the complexities of human experience that showcasesSwift's evolution as both a songwriter and storyteller. The Tortured Poets Department is another album that solidifies Swift's place as one of music's most compelling voices.

Review: Ghosted 2, produced by Oren Ambarchi, Johan Berthling, and Andreas Werlin, presents a fascinating fusion of various genres - Electronic, Jazz, Folk, World, and Country. However, it's not the amalgamation of styles that captivates but the abstract, experimental nature of their endeavor. This record leans into the boundaries of free improvisation, with a heavy emphasis on texture and atmosphere. The instrumentation is minimal, with delicate drumming that weaves through the soundscape while subtle guitar strums and drones create a hazy, hypnotic ambiance. What sets this apart is its exploration of silence. Long stretches of negative space linger, allowing the listener to fully immerse themselves in the subtle nuances and intricacies of the performance. The result is an album that is as challenging as it is rewarding, inviting multiple listens to unravel its sonic secrets.

Review: David Bowie's Rock 'n' Roll Star! chronicles the boy from Bromley's transformative journey that culminated in his Ziggy Stardust masterpiece. Spanning from February 1971 to the recording of 1972's The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, this compilation presents 14 rare and previously unreleased tracks that trace Bowie's artistic metamorphosis. From early Ziggy Session takes to alternative versions and outtakes, this vinyl release offers an intimate glimpse into Bowie's creative process. Each track reveals a different facet of the artist, from the proto-glam of 'Hang On To Yourself' to the soaring balladry of 'Holy Holy.' The album culminates with two iconic performances: an energetic Top Of The Pops rendition of 'Starman' and an alternative version of 'John, I'm Only Dancing' that showcases Bowie's diverse musical talents. Mastered at half-speed, this black vinyl LP provides an immersive and nuanced listening experience.

With Blue Mitchell on trumpet, Junior Cook on tenor saxophone, Gene Taylor on bass, and Roy Brooks on drums, the natural scarcity of this serenade is a cultivated one, not spooned; Silver's naturalistic trumpet sounds carpal and easy, dancing brightly against clear, impeccably recorded contrapuntal movements by Brooks and Taylor.

The Russian turntablist and DJ Paul Sitter is also a deft and experienced editor. A lover of all things hip-hop, it is natural for him to create urban renditions of rock and popular songs. These two tracks presented here originally remixed by the 90s techno act Prodigy's leader Liam Howlett. Review: The debut solo album by David Crosby of Crosby, Stills & Nash fame, If I Could Only Remember My Name is an ironic title for an artist first striking out on their commercial own. But despite its faux-amnesiac title, this freak-folk opus is actually a striking claim to, not a loss of, personal musical identity. Following the success of 1970's Deja Vu with Stills & Nash, Crosby sought to expound on that album's methodology - hard psychedelic drugs, brushes with insanity, copious studio time - to produce a crisp, profound and multifaceted vision on the intersection of blues, folk and collective music-making, with every legend from Neil Young to Joni Mitchell to Graham Nash in tow. The highlight has to be, above all, 'Tamalpais High (At About 3)'.

Review: Dune: Part Two has been met by rave reviews form both critics and cinema goers and there is no doubt that yet another epic soundtrack from Hans Zimmer has helped contribute to that acclaim. His work is another masterpiece that perfectly complements the epic saga's grandeur. Building upon the thematic motifs established in the first installment, Zimmer's score transports listeners to the vast, mystical world of Arrakis. With its sweeping orchestral arrangements and haunting electronic textures, the music evokes a sense of awe and intrigue and Zimmer's mastery of cinematic storytelling shines through every note as he captures the emotional depth and complexity of Frank Herbert's universe. From the thunderous percussion of battle sequences to the haunting melodies of desert landscapes, this is a sci-fi soundtrack essential.

The album cover itself exudes retro charm, hinting at the futuristic soundscapes within. It transports listeners to a bygone era of electronic experimentation, with elements of Italo-Disco and Electro, creating a captivating sonic journey that feels both nostalgic and ahead of its time. Review: The self-titled name of the debut album featuring Luther Vandross is reissued for the first time by Sony. Originally released in 1976, Luther was a five person soul, disco and rhythm and blues ensemble with Luther Vandross as the lead vocalist. A popular session singer at the time, Luther eventually outgrew the band and went solo, but not before two full albums worth of material - this being the first. At the time, the record flew under the radar with the singles 'It's Good For The Soul' and 'Funky Music (Is A Part Of Me)' not making much of an impact on the charts. As the years have gone on and with the success of Luther as well as the resurgence in music of the period, the two albums have gained a lot of interest.

Review: The debut album from Mississippi soul legends The Natural Four, Good Vibes! deserves this full reissue on Wax Trader, which puts a dent in its former obscurity and rareness. An early LP incarnation of Chris James, Allen Richardson, John January and Al Bowden in unison, the album delivers the posi-vibes it promises and then some. But despite its commitment to a good time, the Four don't fall prey to the idea that such vibes necessarily mean avoiding of slow jams; indeed, star cuts like 'Why Should We Stop Now' are as pleading and longing in tone as they are premonitory of the relationship at hand going well; things get even wild-Wester on 'Message From A Black Man', amounting to a multifaceted take on the stated good vibe.

Review: Vertigo is the third part of a reissue series on Parter that focuses on the work of Chris Simmonds and Ron Wells. These two made just nine Eps back between 1990 and 1997 but very much hit a perfect sweet spot between house, garage and techno when they did. Now newly remastered for this series, they have never sounded better. This 12" was originally from 1995 on Bomba Records and features the title cut spread across two sides and two parts. Side A is a bumping house cut with thumping bass and nice frayed edges as the serene synths are smeared all about the mix. Part 2 is a continuation of this most fine and full-bodied but deep house sound.

Owing to his own preference for making music entirely on analog gear, his latest LP Analog Love flaunts this love and then some, laying down nine wet, delectable dancefloor dynamos and enlisting the likes of Rude Jude, Reva DeVito, Ferdi and Holybrune on vocal duties to back it up. Review: Isaiah Collier & The Chosen Few's latest release, The Almighty, embarks on a profound musical odyssey, echoing the spiritual journey of its creators. Collier's compositions transcend mere melodies, delving into the depths of human experience and interconnectedness. With the venerable Dee Alexander lending her emotive vocals to 'Love', the album sets a poignant tone of universal love and empathy. Collier's collaboration with mentor Ari Brown on 'Compassion' exemplifies a beautiful exchange between teacher and disciple, further enriching the album's narrative. In 'Perspective (Peace & Love),' Collier steps into the vocal spotlight, paying homage to jazz luminary Pharoah Sanders while weaving percussive rhythms reminiscent of ancestral heritage. The centerpiece, 'The Duality Suite,' intricately explores the harmony of opposing forces, reflecting the delicate balance inherent in nature and humanity. Culminating in the title track, 'The Almighty,' Collier's mastery of saxophone and orchestration reaches its zenith, orchestrating a symphonic crescendo symbolising resilience and devotion to the transcendent. With echoes of their previous works, The Almighty represents a refined evolution of Collier & The Chosen Few's sonic signature, merging elements of jazz, spirituality, and cultural heritage into a cohesive musical composition. Through intricate and heartfelt performances, the album serves as a poignant reminder of the divine energy permeating all existence.

Review: Led by Kenny Clarke and Francy Boland, the Clarke-Boland Sextet was made up of further musical talents from across Europe and the United States such as Boland, Sahib Shihab, Jimmy Woode, Joe Harris, and Sadi. The group played a pivotal role in shaping the European jazz scene of the 60s, never more so than with their timeless Music For The Small Hours record in 1967. It takes in an array of influences and includes standards like Burt Bacharach's 'Wives & Lovers' as well as more Brazilian and Afro-Cuban groovers like Luiz Bonfa's 'Ebony Samba'. The original compositions shine too, with Shihab's 'Please, Don't Leave' showcasing his vocal talents and adding a real depth. Overall this is jazz that radiates sophistication and relaxation and makes for a refined listen.

Review: Now here's a rarity for you. Not even many of the most committed megafans know that Brian Eno, Holger Czukay and J.Peter Schwalm, accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, performed a secret live music show, outside the esteemed Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany, situated in the city of Bonn, in August 1998. Forming a part of the opening party of Eno's Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation, this furtively-recorded album hears an exclusive slice of incidental "high-altitude food music", of course made during Brian Eno's airborne ambient era. Now reissued via Gronland, this five-piece cut of sophisti-ambi-krauttronica makes for a welcome surprise.

Review: Evasive Records are still going strong after an initial founding in 1999. Run by DJ and producer Rob Pearson, a staple figure of Southeast London's tech house scene at its underground apogee, Evasive's take on the style is an authentic, diversive example of the genre's truest origins. Lovable Rogues is Pearson in collaboration with fellow tech pioneer Lee Humphreys; this is their second EP together, a special follow-up release (now reissued), not least since it logically follows on from the very EP that launched Evasive, 'Look Into Your Eyes / Chica / Twilight Manoeuvres'. Made by the pair in the deepest rural German sticks, the 'Interger' EP betrays tech house's early indebtedness to broken beat, acid jazz and electro, the B2 'Thursday' coming as the tricky favourite here.

Review: Monochrome dream pop band Cigarettes After Sex release their third studio album X's, following up the pre-release 'Tejano Blue'. As romantic and wistful as ever, the album is an avowed haunt-jaunt through a series of 'slow-dance pop ballads' - no change there - albeit this time concerning the brutal reckoning with relationship breakdown and loss, personally borne by lead musician Greg Gonzalez during the recording of their prior self-titled album. Also a lover letter to Gonzalez' hometown of El Paso, Texas, the album draws on themes of the music scene and atmosphere of the city, in dialogue with a subsequent move to New York and the culture shock that followed.

On the B-side, the remixes kick off with Theo Kottis' remix injects a more upbeat and trance-like vibe, with futuristic and techy elements. Review: JPEGMAFIA's Veteran is a confrontational and glitchy masterpiece, both musically and politically charged. Drawing inspiration from Ol' Dirty Bastard's experimentalism, the album delves into themes of racism, gentrification, and internet culture with unapologetic fervor. Entirely self-produced, the album showcases JPEGMAFIA's adept ability to use of sound and texture, weaving together frayed elements into a cohesive and atmospheric whole. Tracks like 'Baby I'm Bleeding' and 'Panic Emoji' exemplify the album's sonic chaos, with distortion and fragmentation used percussively and melodically. JPEGMAFIA's delivery is equally dynamic, seamlessly transitioning between singing and rapping, often on the same track. His lyrical prowess shines on 'Williamsburg,' where he paints a vivid portrait of gentrification's cold and industrial reality. JPEGMAFIA's music remains firmly rooted in his unique perspective, making Veteran a breathless and essential addition to the hip-hop landscape.

Commuting Part 1 opens with the quick-stepping and deep dub techno rhythms of 'Octave Echoes' which is delightfully fluid. 'Stable Velocity' then bids up impossible smooth dub loops and watery pads into something buoyant and stirring both physically and emotionally, and 'Self Assessment' then ups the pace with thudding, infectious kicks and plenty of rippling synth details. UK veteran Tom Churchill opens up with 'Unknown Unknowns (Edit)', which brings plenty of fuzzy and lo-fi aesthetic to jacked up drums and spaced-out pads. Believe In You
Review: Berlin's Jack Tennis is back and knocking it out of the park once more with a quartet of funky and floor-filling tunes. He's already impressed with his work on the likes of Midnight Riot and Too Slow To Disco and now steps out on his owner label Art Groupie. 'Astrud Got It All' kicks off with hefty drums and raw horns as well as some bright strings and a seductive vocal, while 'Hey Gwen' is more carefree, slow, sun kissed and sublime with its lazy horns and mid-tempo grooves. Then comes an edit 'California, Shake It' which is loose-limbed and free-flowing, and closer 'Believe in You' is an upbeat stomper with nice flute leads and old school soul vocal goodness.

Review: One of a throng of new releases to be pushed by the veritable assembly line that is Sound Exhibitions, 'Mutual Sensation' by Klima Project and El Sastre is a testament to the rich diversity of the Afro-funk genre, not least when it is fused with house. Both emerging talents from Spain, this dream team are an unmistakably apt pairing, their title track hooking us in with tritone Rhodes, pop-out FX, and transitory fills to die for. The B's 'See The Blues' gives us temporary synaesthesia, allowing us to transcend our temporary melancholy by way of murmured, sampled pep talks and digital arpy flourishes, set against a timbale-ing, bongo-ing forward march.

Review: Robert Hood's 'Alpha Key' EP is a future classic of the techno genre. The title track is a relentless, industrial beast with a pounding beat, rattling percussion, and tribalistic, mechanical overtones. Its energetic counterpart, 'Future Remedy', is a true crowd-mover with a driving beat, hypnotic chord progressions, and a euphoric atmosphere. 'Pathetic' takes on a darker, more introspective tone, featuring heavy chords, throbbing basslines, and a haunting, industrial soundscape. The EP concludes with 'Outsider', a relentless stomper with a crushing beat, layered rhythms, and an almost cinematic intensity. Overall, 'Alpha Key' is a great example of Hood's mastery of the techno genre, showcasing his ability to blend power, experimentation, and raw emotion.

Review: Reissued via French label Rotorelief on its 35th Anniversary year, Chance Meeting on a Dissecting Table of a Sewing Machine and an Umbrella is the debut album of trailblazing noise and avant-garde musician Steven Stapleton. Catapulting Stapleton's macabre alias to success in the thin breath of just three through-composed drone pieces, this sonic statement was unparalleled at the time (1979), with its unusual mix of prepared tinkerings, feedback drones and cog-jams famously causing Sounds magazine to momentarily abandon their five-star rating system to specially award the album five full question marks. Absurdly sadistic, the album is also known for its original publication of the infamous Nurse With Wound List in the liner notes, which listed the entirety of Stapleton's influences going into the album's making - some acts named therein were so obscure that many fans speculate as to whether they were invented. An exemplary work of outsider music - or at least, one that is infamous by proxy to the more baneful works of the outsider music archetype - get ready to hear all things spectral over the more sustained tones: chains rattling, chairs squeaking, shakers shaking, even monologues in French.

Review: Purple Print has become a strong player in the minimal scene in a short space of time, with the likes of Sepp, Delaj, Bisharat and Vid all offering their considerable wares into the growing catalogue since 2021. Their compilation 12" was just as on-point in 2023, and now they're back with a second volume which is not to be missed. Avidel leads the way with the seductive, vocal laced groover 'Someone', while Lukea follows up with a dub techno-tinted workout entitled 'Crescent Moon'. Octave and Nicolas Duvoisin do some smart r&b sampling for undulating roller 'Wanna Be Down' and Zenk creates a sparkling sunrise reverie with 'Dreaming In A Shell', a stripped back but detailed and distinctive workout which ends the record on a high note.

The themed compilations of full-length, extended disco originals, lovingly curated by the mysterious Mr Pinks and with detailed sleeve notes by author and disco aficionado Alan Jones, have long remained in demand among collectors and the club Cognoscenti. Now recompiled and reissued on a striking orange double 140g LP, we're once more transported back to the golden era of the likes of Change, Manhattan Transfer and Cheryl Lynn.

Made up of a bevvy of B-sides spanning from 1992 to 2004, as well as previously unreleased cuts from studio recording sessions of 1998's Life Won't Wait, contributions to film soundtracks and compilations for labels such as Epitaph and Kill Rock Stars, this collection is a fanboy completionist's dream, with these slept on cuts finally arriving back on wax courtesy of the beautiful folks over at Pirates Press.

Review: If you're looking for raw, ruff and retro, this is probably the best you'll get. New York label Nu Groove continues to spotlight the artists that made the label what it is today: a firm favourite of crate diggers then and now. With this being the fifth in the series to reissue their select most vital tracks, which here come re-edited and remastered, 'Nu Groove Edits Vol. 5' opens with Ny House'n Authority's 'Fort Green House' after its re-edit by Arms & Legs' Daniel Steinberg, which sets the tone for a janky and roomy pandora's box of groovers. Also of note is the sweet, washy piano house arkenstone that is Underground Kids' 'Get Up', trumping a B-side that is, while still great, has nothing on the A2.

Review: Emmanuel Top's Attack Records epitomizes the zenith of 1990s techno-acid brilliance. The French maestro sculpted a sonic landscape that remains as fresh today as it did decades ago. Tracks like 'Turkish Bazar' and the enigmatic 'Acid Phase,' with its heavy acid bleeps, stand tall among the era's techno elite, exuding a trancey, main stage allure. Now, after thirty years, these seminal tracks return to vinyl in a meticulously crafted 5 x 12" box set. Remastered with care, each track receives its own vinyl side, allowing for an immersive sonic experience that DJs and audiophiles will relish. This collection is not merely a nostalgic trip down memory lane but a testament to Emmanuel Top's enduring influence on electronic music. Tracks like the aptly named 'Climax V 13) do heavy damage on dancefloor's worldwide. For fans of 90s techno and those seeking a glimpse into its pulsating heartbeat, this box set is a treasure trove. Emmanuel Top's legacy shines brightly, encapsulating the essence of a genre-defining era, while propelling it into the future for new generations to discover and appreciate.

Review: Jeff Mills throws a spaghettifying curveball with latest EP 'The Trip'. Themed after the terrifying notion of entering a black hole, and likening this to the vicarious yet no less enjoyable illusions of grandeur that might go hand in hand with attending a Millsart rave, 'The Trip' has been routinely billed as "the world's first cosmic opera" (in its performance incarnation), and attempts to sonically answer the question as to what exactly happens when we cross that fateful event horizon, in ambitious, live-jam-born-recorded form. Via eight cosmic suites of terrifying techno wizardry (we'd expect nothing less from the Belleville 'blazer), Jeff Mills brings his originally live, light-eating vision to vinyl, nailing the cosmick perceptual horror of being "sucked in" through dust-bitten repetitions, descending mind-melts and dissociative-detuned fugues - the latter is most intriguing; 'When Time Stops' is the track of choice for exploring Mills' least repetitious and most improvisatory tendencies.

Review: Asad Rizvi, known as Silverlining, presents this white hot three-vinyl set showcasing his collaborative work with fellow artists. This collection spans the genres of minimal and tech house, tagged with elements of tech house, minimal, and breakbeat house. Some of the highlights include 'If You Were A Cat You'd Follow Me' by Appleheadz with its jazzy downtempo future jazz vibe, evoking a smooth and melodic atmosphere. Followed by 'In My Sky' (instrumental), delivering smooth melodic tech house adorned with jazz guitar and soft keys. The set continues with 'Taken Over,' a melodic house gem from Bluegoose Vs Silverlining, exuding infectious rhythms and melodic hooks. 'Tuesday Morning Milkman' by Impossible Beings takes listeners on a deep techno journey, perfect for late-night sci-fi vibes. Another excellent additions is 'They'll Never Get It Right Them Two' by Two Right Wrongans, a dynamic banger that tears the roof off the dancefloor.
