Review: After years in the vault, Andrea & Alexander are now set to shine in the real world once more. This nostalgic project founded by Andrea Noce and Alexander Arpeggio in 2014 was revitalised in 2023. Initially a live setup of synths and drum machines, it evolved into a collection of songs with minimal-wave grooves and haunting lyrics in English and German, kinda reminiscent of Siouxsie Sioux and Gudrun Gut. Following a breakup, both pursued solo careers, with Andrea releasing music internationally and Alexander launching a label. Now, their timeless recordings have come back to public attention and arrive in the form of this vibrant album.

Review: Clark must be ranked among the most innovative, forward-thinking and shape-shifting music producers in the world today. At times ferociously intense, in other moments serenely beautiful, here he turns his abundant talent to Naqqash Khalid's award-winning debut feature film, 'In Camera', and the results are every bit as sophisticated and mesmerising as we might hope. Stop-you-dead synth overtures like 'Running Dreams' dissipate into otherworldly covers of The Carpenters and Sonic Youth's 'Superstar', the heartbroken alt-pop of 'Green Blood' and its compatriot, 'Blue Blood'. It's a stunning piece of work that showcases the refined talents of a studio behemoth, fitting in perfectly next to recent artist albums Playground In A Lake and Sus Dog. "I knew from the outset I wanted to work with an artist and have the soundtrack not be something that acts in support of the film," Khalid is quoted in the release notes here. Mission accomplished.

Review: After years of reluctance, finally a new album from Dada Pogrom. The Icelandic musician Kenneth Walter Balys here crafts a sonic-alchemical opus out of the prima materia that are pop harmony and strutting synths; elaborated synth passages and wonderful pop melodies. After the mystery musician played some of these new songs in front of a full sold out house at the Kernkrach Festival, The Black Light Spectrum follows as the recorded-musical encore demanded by the audience that never received one in live form. Through 12/8 marches, mellotronic/flutey surrealisms ('Forsaken'), hoovering electro-saw tricks ('Taste The Wip') and a banger-bound latter half, Dada Pogrom dazzles us once more.

Review: Formed in Barcelona's underground scene, the Italian-Catalan duo Silvia Konstance and Viktor Lux Crux aka Dame Area blend industrial-tribal rhythms with minimalist synths while drawing inspiration from avant-garde pioneers like Esplendor Geometrico, Suicide, and Einsturzende Neubauten. This highly anticipated fourth album, Toda la verdad sobre Dame Area ("The Whole Truth About Dame Area") marks a more aggressive, percussion-driven sound and a departure from the melody-focused album they dropped back in 2022. The dynamic live performances the pair are down for are distilled into an album that perfectly captures their experimental edge with unpredictable rhythms, metallic percussion and plenty of energy.

Also included are the likes of 'Where's The Revolution', 'Going Backwards' and 'Cover Me' making this a fine overview of the synth band legends and some of their best moments.

Review: Among the figureheads of French disco, Bernard Fevre, better known as Black Devil, probably had the shortest-lived career, but was among the brightest minds of them all. Although his first album Disco Club, released in 1978, went unnoticed at first, it has since become a must-have, a collector's item which has led a lot of listeners to further investigate his extensive work. Fevre experimented with such a wide gamut of styles that it has been hard not to lose track; though perhaps one such aide l'equilibre is this newest compilation/lookback record, Space Oddities 1976-1985. Spanning a huge swathe of Fevre's records, some more touted and others more waylaid, this compilation can only begin to help us firmly grasp the cosmic breadth of the artist's work, some of which is indubitably club-bound, some of which is comparatively cinematic and scenic. Here's hoping Giordano Bruno was wrong about the open universe - Fevre's explorations are so expansive that they verge on boundlessness.

This influential album played a crucial role in the development of industrial and EBM music throughout the 80s and beyond, forming the foundational sound that defined Front 242. The reissue offers fans a chance to experience the album's groundbreaking tracks anew, appreciating the enduring legacy of this iconic band.

Review: Day-Glo Chaos Gets Physical, the third album by Hologram Teen (Morgane Lhote), is a tight, kaleidoscopic blend of 80s synthpop and quirky electro. Lhote draws from her obsession with arcade games and cinematic synths, building a vivid world where bright electronic textures collide with playful rhythms. It's no surprise she cites influences like Jacno's analogue electro and John Carpenter's dystopian scores - you can hear their pulse throughout the record, most notably in tracks like 'Midnite Rogue', which nods to Lhote's love of retro gaming with a rhythm as driving as an Outrun arcade session. The album thrives on its sharp production and colorful arrangements, creating a sense of motion and energy that's both nostalgic and forward-thinking. The inclusion of everything from Sega Master System-inspired sounds to a custom synth designed in Ableton (cheekily named after prog-rock legend Rick Wakeman) showcases Lhote's playful approach to electronic music, while still maintaining a sense of sophistication. Tracks like 'Teen Beats Highway' and 'Valley Nights (Burnin')' tap into that irresistible groove, perfectly balancing punchy, rhythmic hooks with atmospheric melodies. This isn't just a retro throwback; Day-Glo Chaos updates and modernises the nostalgia, offering a nuanced reimagining of synth music's neon-glow past. It's meticulously layered yet fun, upbeat without being overbearing. Whether you're drawn in by the danceable beats or the sonic tributes to old-school gaming and 80s cinema, this album brims with personality and an unmistakable charm.

Review: Iconoclastic artist Kat Von D explores themes of love and sobriety in her sophomore album, My Side of the Mountain, inspired by the famous adventure novel. This synthwave, goth, post-punk album was crafted amidst her journey of covering tattoos and embracing a new faith, reflecting her experiences of love, darkness, and vulnerability. Collaborating with respected songwriters Shep Solomon, Fernando Garibay, and featuring guest vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, Kat creates a compelling sonic landscape. Kat's impressive resume spans shaking up the tattoo industry, starring in TV shows, writing best-selling books, and building a beauty empire. However, music remains her first love. With a background in classical music and an eclectic appreciation for various genres, My Side of the Mountain stands as an impressive follow-up, showcasing her growth and artistic evolution.

Review: Leathers' debut album, Ultraviolet, helmed by Canadian musician and visual artist Shannon Hemmett, plunges listeners into a neon-lit world of synth-driven dream pop, darkwave, and shoegaze. Hemmett, who also plays keyboards for Actors, fully engages herself in every facet of this project, from crafting the music to designing the visual aesthetics. Ultraviolet offers a mix of new tracks and familiar hits, with 'Divine' standing out as a stellar example of what the album delivers. Hemmett's sharp lyrics, like "I demand your best behaviour / no, I won't ask you twice," are paired with infectious melodies, impressing longtime fans. Produced by Actors frontman Jason Corbett, Ultraviolet channels the brooding pop of Depeche Mode's classic albums like Black Celebration and Violator. While the album is rooted in synths and melodic immediacy, it carries a darker, moody undercurrent. Leathers' Ultraviolet is an impressive debut that showcases Hemmett's artistic vision, blending haunting soundscapes with striking visuals to create a cohesive and engaging album.

Review: Memorial Waterslides marks the debut of Memorials, a collaboration between Verity Susman and Matthew Simms, formerly of Electrelane and Wire. This album is a surreal exploration of pop music, blending timeless songwriting with avant-garde sensibilities. Drawing from a wide range of influences from Broadcast and Portishead to Yo La Tengo, Memorials crafts a panoramic soundscape that feels both familiar and refreshingly new. The album's tracks are rich with imagery, evoking visions of a lost future and dreamlike past, each contributing to a swirling, cinematic atmosphere. Produced entirely by Susman and Simms, the record's sound was shaped by their reel-to-reel tape experiments, initially developed for their live performances. This playful and experimental approach results in a engaging mix of psychedelic rock, folk, and analog electronics. Following their successful 2023 soundtracks and a European tour with Stereolab, this a bold and imaginative journey into the unexpected, balancing the esoteric with the melodic.

Review: Mermaid Chunky are the logical result of the creative partnership of Freya and Moina, two visual artists and musicians from Stroud and South London each. Having shuttled between each locale for inordinate stretches of time, their latest record - the whimsically Christened slif slaf slof - nonetheless bridges these local poles. A breezy homage to the duo's shared ideal excesses - an interest in fantasy folk, costume, absurdist nature, surrealist scatting - the likes of 'Ceili', 'Tiny Gymnast' and 'Chaperone' are liable to solicit all manner of reactions in the listener, from on-the-spot bouncing to full-frontal gyrating. A sorely difficult to place record, merging motifs of indie, freak folk, and a decidedly DFA experimentalism.

Review: Belarusian post-punk and synth-pop group Molchat Doma have always reflected a brutalist aesthetic in their music which has been marked by cold, grey, and industrial tones. Following their 2020 breakthrough, the trio faced significant changes from leaving Minsk to headlining global shows. Settling in Los Angeles, they crafted their fourth album, Belaya Polosa, which symbolises transformation during tough times and celebrates the digital pulse of the 90s. The album combines sombre dance floor anthems with vibrant reinventions and tracks like 'Ty Zhe Ne Znaesh' Kto Ya,' 'Son,' and 'Belaya Polosa' showcase how they have moved their sound along to blend post-punk, synth textures, and melodic sophistication while maintaining their distinctive minimalist style.

Review: Swedish musician Molly Nilsson presents her 11th full-length record, a bedazzling album that immediately strikes the listener with a mature sense of irony, one that is yet not incompatible with a sincerely beautiful, end-productive sound. Un-American Activities draws its name from the allegedly un-American acts of Lion Feuchtwanger, a survivor of the National Socialist regime in 1930s Germany, whose flight from fascist persecution to America in 1933 ironically saw him placed on the FBI's surveilling blacklist for "premature antifascist" acts. For this reason, Feuchtwanger was not granted citizenship; and only after Lion's death in December 21, 1958 did his wife Marta receive a letter stating that both of them were approved to become American citizens. Nilsson themes her album after Feuchtwanger, having recorded it entirely in the villa in which he and his wife formerly lived, while sojourning there as part of an eponymous artist residency: Villa Aurora. The resulting album is a love note not only to the artist - among the very first to be declared an "enemy of the state" by the Nazis - but also to the internal, external and eternal struggle he fought. The record draws heavily on the German synth-pop born of the same modernist movement that the Nazis necessarily harped on; yet Nilsson's sound also comes tinged with a deeply sad sense of inadequacy, one that is implicitly mocking of the hopeless nostalgias and returns-home so central to the Nazi project.

Review: Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD) and their 2017 future classic The Punishment of Luxury, is an album that brilliantly merges biting social commentary with the band's signature synth-driven sound. Now available on blue vinyl, this release not only delivers sonically but also visually, with its vibrant cover art reflecting the album's thematic depth. From the opening title track, OMD sets the tone with an unapologetic critique of consumer culture, driven by Andy McCluskey's impassioned vocals and sharp lyrics. The band's ability to craft music that feels timeless yet relevant is on full display, blending modern production with the nostalgic essence of their '80s work. Tracks like 'What Have We Done' capture the disillusionment of the current era while offering a plea for a better future. Despite the absence of original drummer Malcolm Holmes, the album remains powerful, with Stuart Kershaw stepping in seamlessly and the deluxe edition's packaging, with its striking design and included lyrics booklet, further enhances the experience.

Review: Citirax's next outing takes the form of a debut album from Los Angeles-based duo OP-ART. This pair, like so much great music of recent times, is born out of the creative isolation of lockdown and features Andrew Clinco, who you may know for his work with Drab Majesty. The alias they have adopted is an acronym of "Oblique Pleasures Amidst Rough Times" which they say reflected the challenges of their formation. Musically the duo is inspired by the 1960s visual art movement so embraces layered, psychedelic soundscapes with a minimalist approach and takes cues from New Wave artists like John Foxx and early OMD. OP-ART in particular focuses on analogue synthesis and gear like the Arp Odyssey and Moog Rogue while exploring time, romance, and existential themes with real emotional depth.
