Review: Six tracks by some of the less conspicuous names in 1980s Italo disco scene get pressed to a singular unifying 12" here. Commemorating Cruisin' Records' 40th anniversary (1983-2023), 'Takes Over' is a delightful compilation scouring the exclusive vaults of its back catalogue, with label mainstay Nello Jay handling curation duties. Largely centring on the year 1985, two cuts from, 'Japanese Girl' and 'Lady Fantasy', come courtesy of Max Him, while the likes of 'For Your Sweet Information' by PJ Marcus, 'In Your Eyes' by Roxana', and 'Heigh Ho' by Fabian Nesti all stomp, gyrate, and whoop away, indulging the very same escapist fantasies as those involved in the scene back then.

Review: Argentina's The Force (aka. the duo of Ignacio Marty and Telzen - not to be confused with the moniker of Chicago house and electro stalwart Jesse Saunders) returns for another future disco EP, 'The Rise Of Poseidon II' via the London-via-Berlin label Calypso's Dream. Much like its wonderful predecessor 'Video Center / Galactic Alliance', this one hard-drives through four crude but shocking sonic Tron-terrains, privileging plucky 8-bit hooks and space-age transitions, whether on the offbeat synth donks of lead track 'Harold' or hard 'pressed disjoint of 'Pit Box Mens'. All deep-sea pearls here, and discoverable only by the worthiest of snorkelers.

Review: Run out of Paris by DJ duo Fa_Fane and F.M., DELODIO is bringing a delightfully freaky strain of grubby lo-fi grooves to our attention, pitching somewhere between minimal wave, noisy techno and Balearic splendour. If that sounds appealing you're going to love Froid Dub, comprised of producers Francois Marche and Stephane Bodin cruising through a particularly lopsided abstraction of dub which sounds like it favours the clank of mid-range drum machines from yesteryear and their attendant synths. It's all very in-the-desk, and very cool indeed, with the blissfully surrealism of 'First Floor' being a particular highlight.

Review: Producer and DJ Stephan Barnem teams up with fellow artist Futuristant for a cross-Mediterranean foray into high-concept melodic techno. 'Don't Cry' is nothing short of a euphoric anthem, mixing tropes from synthwave, electro and big room into a piece that could easily function as the next HALO soundtrack theme. A robotic voice narrates the entire journey - "bringing you light, I am the star, shining so bright, I am the rain refreshing the earth, I am the laughter, I am the mirth" - as if it were the telepathic monologue of a deus ex come to grant salvation to us all.

Review: Thanks to the eternally revered Minimal Wave imprint, out of NYC, Mark Phillips and Robert Lawrence's Five Times Of Dust project is going through a bit of a revival. The duo had first released some post-punk cassettes back in the 80s, and they clearly have not been forgotten. On this new remix EP, "Computer Bank" is given a makeover in the form of a The Floor remix, who proceeds to add all sorts of quirkiness over the tune's tough, heavy bass and driving rhythm; "Armoured Car" breaks the 4/4 in favour of something much closer to the band's original drum machine style. Once again, on the flip, we have a remix of "Like I Am, Comme Je Suis" by The Floor, who throws up a gnarly electro bass onto shady, neo-romantic vocals, and the whole things is finished off by "Imponative" from Unovodual and Tara Cross, who produce a slow, heady industrial groove for the dancefloor.

Review: French 79 has just completed a tour with over 100 dates, and fresh off the back of it unveils his third studio album. The headline is that its synths were recorded at Jean-Michel Jarre's studio in Paris which is enough to get any electronica fan excited. The album itself is a mix of everything from swirling electronic opuses to pop gems, flamboyant tracks and liberating harmonies. There are moments of introspection too, all of which showcase French 79's wide range of talents as a songwriter as well as a producer. This is a powerful and emotive album from front to back.

Review: Field Lines Cartographer is an alias of Mark Burford and now it is back with a new album-length adventure, Phases Of This & Other Moons. As the title suggests, this is cosmic ambient exploration made using just one Buchla synth and plenty of other sci-fi electronics. It finds him tease the very most out of his machine then feeding it through an array of effects pedals to twist and distorted the sound into alien forms. If you like the more out there work of Zeit-era Tangerine Dream and Michael Stearns then this is one trip you need in your life.

Review: Canadian electro-industrialists FLA really do understand what consistency is. Having put out 12 official studio albums since their inception in 1986, they have remained at the top of their niche game since first landing on the scene, making tracks with this dystopian dancefloor energy, rooted in the cold and unfeeling factories of the future and deceptive humanism of warm synth work.
Nerve War was their now-legendary first mixtape, released the year they got together, and it set the bar so high its any wonder any of what followed managed to live up to these standards. Suffice to say, the fact subsequent stuff did is testament to the band's genius. Review: The good folks at Compost have put together a second volume of their Future Sounds of Kraut compilation and once again it is packed with exciting new takes on the age-old genres. Compiler Fred Und Luna features a couple of times including with the celestial synth charms and light electronic rhythms of 'Monotonikum' and elsewhere tried and tested talents such as Thomas Fehlmann with his widescreen cinematic cut' 'Permanent Touch' and minimal favourite Roman Flugel with his delightfully melodic and innocent 'Rules' bring plenty of class the adventurous and accomplished double album. There is plenty to get stuck into here for those who like their sounds sleek, atmospheric and star gazing.

Review: Franc Moody's debut album Dream in Colour is a superb take on funk and soul from the Tottenham, London collective. They met on the warehouse scene and have blossomed ever since with all six members of the band bringing their own influent to make for a truly eclectic and widely informed sound. This album has both eyes on the dancefloor as it dazzles with fresh tunes and colourful melodies. The band takes inspiration from the likes of George Clinton, Khruangbin and Jimmy McGriff along the way and it all comes on lush orange vinyl.

All the tunes find the band searching for a utopia, a better place for us all as summery comes to an end. Review: If you've not seen Gabrielle Provaas' innovative and heartfelt documentary Onzinchtbaar we implore you to do so. The film hones in on 'invisible heroes' responsible for keeping a country clean on a day-to-day basis. From hospitals to streets, schools to offices, this is the workforce that ensures the cogs can move and many more people can get stuff done. So what exactly does that sound like when Fatima Yamaha is drafted for the score? Opening on 'Het Begrijpt Je' might suggest the kind of patient music that accentuates attention to detail. That's certainly true at times, like the staggeringly beautiful piano number 'Hooikoorts' or the drones and twinkles of 'Hotel Haast'. But then we also have more hyperactive moments, and noises to accompany those - 'Veeg Life' and its bouncy, club-ready elec-tech, 'Kissey's leftfield deep house, 'Schiet Zo In Je Rug' and its strange, fidgety epic-ness.
