Transdance (GC1 version)
Life Up (demo)
Review: The mythical Transdance from UK duo Night Moves is given a much needed official issue by Domestica Records and the Barcelona label have spared no expense. A limited pressing of 400 clear blue 10"s come housed in hand printed and hand numbered sleeves accompanied by a leaflet with complete biography of the band. Despite the paucity of Night Moves discography, it's clear the duo of Michael Guihen and John Davis have had an everlasting effect on the canon of synth music with their much admired debut. Transdance was originally released as a limited 12" white label in 1981, finding favour on the dance floors of Europe and New York City yet never really gained the wider exposure it richly deserved. Original copies of the GC1 pressing of Transdance still command slightly ridiculous prices on Discogs so kudos to Domestica for this rather special presentation which features a previously unreleased demo cut "Life Up" on the flip.

Alpha Zone
Gamma Zone
Review: Thus far the Vivod label has proved to be refreshingly diverse in its approach, with the meaty electro and tripped out Will Powers styled experimentation of the debut release from label boss Ali Renault markedly different to the primitive electronics and early wave of NCW's collaborative twelve with the distinctively titled Piss. It makes sense therefore that the third Vivod release from the wonderfully named Mild Peril should deviate in yet another direction, veering into the realm of resplendent, laid back analogue explorations. The latest creative incarnation of London DJ, musician and "reluctant club promoter" Christopher J Gilbert, Mild Peril digs into his digital archives for a newly remastered version of "Alpha Zone" that chugs gently through six minutes of cosmic synthscapes. Even better is the nine minute "Gamma Zone" which uses the slower pace and extended duration to veer deep into the Balearic core.

Review: The Berlin based label Blackest Ever Black continues their singular journey through the darkest recesses of sonics old and new with an album from Lustmord. Otherwise known as Welsh born but California-based dark ambient pioneer Brian Williams, Lustmord's discography spans some three decades and has collaborated with Chris & Cosey, The Melvins and Tool as well as releasing numerous solo albums. The Word As Power is the first Lustmord LP in some four yerars and fits in neatly with bleakly beautiful aesthetic Kiran Sande's label has been cultivating over the past few years, using a combination of "voices, electronics, immense sub-bass, field recordings and other acoustic phenomena harnessed and arranged to stimulate feelings of dread and desolation, certainly, but also escape, renewal and rebirth".

Reborn Ice Horn (Ond Ton Reborn In 1991 remix)
Review: Astro: Dynamics come correct with this crucial vinyl issue of 1991's self titled debut from last year. The London label served notice of their talent for picking out unheralded sonic sculptors when they released the eight track 1991 on tape and digital formats and since then the Swedish producer, real name Axel Backman, has impressed with material for the Opal Tapes label under both the 1991 banner and its Roman numerical equivalent MCMXCI, as well as remixing Lukid's "This Dog Can Swim" for the similarly gauzy-minded Werkdiscs. It's great to see AD return to 1991 and give it a rather dashing clear blue 12" vinyl issue as the scrunched up Cure-isms of EP highlight "Open To The Dark" is the kind of track made for the wax format. Look out for further 1991 material on Astro:Dynamics later this year too!

The Man With The Red Rhythm
The Ischiadic Nerve
Review: Jamal Moss steps up to the Alter stable with some of his masterful Chicago-via-outer-space house music, kicking off with the subtle rise and fall of the title track which works off a dizzying array of interlocking melodies to create a truly intergalactic synthesiser journey. "The Man With The Red Rhythm" is a more jagged affair, maximizing on cowbell hits and a delirious clashing of harmonies between organ notes, rubbery bass swells, and all manner of sonic mess flung at the canvas and falling into a mad jack all by itself. "The Ischiadic Nerve" deals more in a grotty, industrial sound palette wielded to a tough techno purpose. The drum pattern is unforgiving, the synths drifting like aimless wraiths, the intensity never letting up. It's exactly what you went when signing up for the Jamal Moss experience.

Dype Skoger (DJ Sotofett mix - part 1)
Dype Skoger (DJ Sotofett mix - part 2)
Review: Formed out of a partnership between a rag tag collective of musicians working samplers, modular synths, clarinet and tape dubs to maximum effect, Tru West kicks inaugurates the Marmo Music label with a serious message of intent. The a-side is given over to the ranging experimentation of the group, veering between moments of uneasy calm and abrasive noise through the fluid process of live jams, but ever injected with warmth as the dextrous clarinet provides a welcome anchor point to the grotty textures around it. On the flip, DJ Sotofett gets busy with a remix that takes thin slithers of the original material as a jump off point and plunges head first into an exotic world of wonderous live drums, tumbling congas and jungle noises aplenty, making for one of the most thrilling sides of vinyl you're likely to hear all year.

Ten Steps Removed
Satellite
Port
Intruder
Review: Brussels label Vlek emerge with Sattelite, another deadly transmission from the mysterious Sagat, which details a new approach from last year's Klock approved debut EP Few Mysterious Solved In A Year Of Contact. Opening track lays down two minutes of hazed synths and pinballed metallic textures gradually succumbing to the threat of oncoming claustrophobic hissing and skittering hi-hat, whilst the title track is a master class in weaving forward momentum from choral samples as Sagat wisely tones down the percussive elements to a tinny 2 step beat. Ease the plate over and Sagat goes heads down for the tunnelling concrete rhythmics of "Port" which has a touch of the Fachwerks about it. It's followed and the EP is finished by the abstract sound design of "Intruder" which should interest fans of Astro Dynamics or Werk.

Before Your Very Eyes
Magic Beanz
Review: XL Recordings return to Amok, the debut album from Thom Yorke and company's Atoms For Peace, culling yet another cut for 12" release in the shape of "Before Your Eyes". The opening track from the five piece's much anticipated LP retains its dramatic impact removed from what follows, with the insistent rhythmics and off kilter basslines likely to appeal to the more adventurous selectors out there. Indeed it worked very well within the context of James Holden's recent Resident Advisor podcast. Thom, Nigel and the gang appease their rabid fanbase with the inclusion of exclusive B Side "Magic Beanz".

Review: The latest transmission from the Enfant Terrible / Gooiland Elektro empire sees the welcome return of Schwefelgelb, a prolific techno duo from Berlin. Jonas Forster and Philipp Graf are Schwefelgelb and together they dabble in what they refer to as Grostadtmusik, a sort of technologically boosted update on what DAF were doing, so it's not Berlin techno in the Berghain sense, more techno in the mould that Helena Hauff might drop at Hamburg club Golden Pudel. Raw proto EBM blessed with a contemporary touch and plenty of taut Teutonic chanting - "non stop decadent party music" as Gooiland put it!

I Can't Give You Anything But Love
Review: Warm, fuzzy techno shoe gazers Walls are back on their own Ecstatic imprint with a record that sees them move away from the Kompakt-friendly undulations of their career to date and engage with something grittier. "Urals" works around what sounds like modular synth patterns and lightly dressed drum machines of an insistent nature, while gentle licks of guitar slowly peal in over the top for a refined and decidedly cosmic trip. "I Can't Give You Anything But Love" on the flip is a far more visceral affair that slams a hammering arpeggio into squalls of noise and distortion with an EBM pound marching out underneath, drastically more aggressive than the sound Walls made their name on.

Destruction
Review: Hot on the heels of the updated DAF stylings of that Schwefelgelb 12", Enfant Terrible / Gooiland Elektro demonstrate the breadth of their output with this plate from Tobias Bernstrup. A decorated contemporary artist from Gothenburg, Bernstrup is one of those annoyingly talented individuals who works across visual, interactive, performance art and electronic music mediums and if there's a new wave of Italo Disco he's definitely amongst the top 5%. The Destruction EP is classic Bernstrup mixing elements of Italo with synth pop and at times it sounds like Bernard Sumner's been in the studio with Ali Renault. Dancefloor hits for the neo-romantics among us!
