Jackie McLean & Michael Carvin - "De I Comahlee Ah" (extended) (12:22)
Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath - "MRA" (6:48)
Review: The cult Melodies International label run by Floating Points and Mafalda starts a new series here. Melodies Record Club will find each curated by a different guest DJ or producer with the first one selected by the always on point Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet. He picks some of the tracks he used to spin at the legendary Plastic People and first up is an extended version of 1975 tune 'De I Comahlee Ah' by jazz stars Jackie McLean and Michael Carvin. Chris McGregor's Brotherhood Of Breath takes care of the flip with the big band energy and excellent horn work of 'MRA.'

Salute To The Sun
The Energy Of Life
Review: Second time around for Matthew Halsall's sixth solo album, Salute to the Sun, a set that many critics cited as being among the best contemporary jazz albums of 2020. As the title suggests, it's unarguably Halsall's most summery album to date, with the celebrated bandleader and trumpeter - accompanied by some of Manchester's most accomplished players - offering up a swathe of relaxed, life-affirming compositions that combine modal and contemporary jazz themes with gentle, Latin-influenced rhythms, breezy instrumentation (harps, kalimbas, marimbas and so on) and subtle nods towards Charles Stepney and Terry Callier. Some of the woodwind and brass solos are similarly superb, while the album's sun-soaked, easy-going atmosphere is alluring whatever the weather.

Review: Iconic jazz label Blue Note continues with is carefully considered reissue program under the Tone Poet banner, which places lots of focus on audiophile quality pressings. This one focusses on Andrew Hill, who was often said to be one of the most distinctive pianists and composing talents in the game. This session was first recorded in 1963 yet for some reason remained unrelated until 2003, when it finally made it to CD. Now presented on vinyl it features a fine ensemble including Woody Shaw and Dizzy Reece on trumpet, Julian Priester on trombone, Joe Farrell on saxes, and more on bass, horns, drums and tuba. The results are hugely moving.

Review: Adrian Younge's new album is undoubtedly his most powerful yet. He says it "dissects the chemistry behind blind racism, using music as the medium to restore dignity and self-worth to my people." It is an unapologetic critique of the current systems that suppress people of colour and the malevolent psychology that taps into that. Musically, this is a deeply soulful record with elaborate orchestration and some top level guests. Next to the album, Younge has also made a short film (TAN) and 4-part podcast (invisible Blackness) on the same subject that make for vital listening.

Review: Philadelphia International Records is the label that captured the musical magic of one truly unique city. The so-called Philie sound is a genre all of its own - string laced, orchestral disco that is supremely sumptuous and inescapably joyful. All of its best moments are captured here on this 12 track collection which is packed front to back, top to bottom with eternal classics from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes to MFSB, The O'Jays to Teddy Pendergrass. You will already know all these tunes but having them together on one handy vinyl aint no bad thing.

Spirits Of Mauronoros (5:12)
Kolida Hymn (5:35)
Review: Jazzman's Jazz 45 offshoot has proved to be surprisingly eclectic to date, offering up not only more traditional jazz releases but also some worthy and entertaining experimental fare. This release from Greek duo Kolida Babo (AKA Sokratis Votskos and Harris P) fits into the latter category, combining traditional acoustic instrumentation (duduk, alto sax and double bass) with vintage Moog and Roland synthesizer sounds. While the results definitely fall into the jazz camp, there are distinctive nods towards Greek folk music and, more obviously, early 1970s, synthesizer-fired Krautrock releases. As a result, both 'Spirit of Mauronoros' and 'Kolida Hymn' are cosmic, otherworldly and hard-to-pigeonhole, but also hugely inspiring and entertaining.

Review: Real Gone continue to serve up well put together reissues of the most vital music from the legendary Black Jazz label. This one has the original artwork as well as some brand new liner notes from Pat Thomas, who wrote the fantastic Listen Whitey! The Sounds of Black Power 1965-1975. This was the first album the label put out and remains one of the most sought after. Gene Russell was a master of his keyboard as well as being the label's artistic helmsman. It features plenty of strength up pano gold, as well as element software modal jazz and soul and plenty of rich flourishes from double bassist Henry 'The Skipper' Franklin and drummer Steve Clover.

Review: Of all the many cutting edge and pioneering records put out by the iconic Black Jazz label, Doug Carn's is one of the most well known and widely acclaimed. Although everything he did turned to gold, this one reached even more impressive heights with Doug himself at the helm of the composition on the 1973 release. It sees him integrate Jean Carn's majestically soulful and heavenly vocals deeper into the music which was so stylishly delivered by trumpeter Olu Dara, bassist Walter Booker, and drummer Ira Williams. The standout track will always be the rapturous 'Power & The Glory' but all the rest are frankly just as good.

Review: Nimbus West Records is an independent US jazz record label, founded by Tom Albach in 1979. We have a repress of Horace Tapscott Sextet's one and only release from 1981 for the label: Dial B for Barbra. Comprised of Everett Brown Jr., Gary Bias, Reggie Bullen, Roberto Miranda, Sabir Mateen with Tapscott - who many probably know from his work as The Pan-Afrikan Peoples Arkestra - at the helm. This gem of the post bop/avant-garde jazz style fetches exorbitant prices on the secondhand market, so here's your chance to get your hands on a right classic.

Review: Way back in 2012, legendary pedal steel player Susan Alcorn held a residency at Issue Project Room in Brooklyn. During that time, she performed a number of pieces that had been arranged for her by cellist Janel Leppin. It's a recording of one of those performances that makes up The Heart Sutra, a fusion of neo-classical, avant-garde experimentalism and jazz that brilliantly re-imagines Alcorn's music. Surprisingly, it's not Alcorn's pedal steel that dominates - though it is audible - but rather a combination of cello, violin, clarinet and guitar. The resultant music is genuinely spellbinding, though, and packed full of atmosphere. We can only imagine what it would have been like to attend the recording, but we wish we'd been there.
