  1. Pay Me Back My Money (Back Slap-Up re-edit)
  2. Funky Drummers In A Space Suit (Slap & Blap edit)
Review: If anyone can add a truly new twist to the endless array of JB edits, it's Tall Black Guy. "Pay Me Back My Money" stretches funk's most famous band leader out to include bags of space and even a touch of jazz as subtle keys are thrown deep into the background. "Funky Drummers In A Space Suit" ups the originality stakes even further with a dreamy harp-strummed arpeggio and trippy snippets that, if you didn't know the title, you'd be hard pushed to identify them. Proof that sampling culture still has heaps to give, Tall Black Guy can do no wrong right about now.

  1. Machito & His Orchestra - "Hold On (I'm Coming)" (feat Graciela)
  2. Giobel & The Latin Chords - "We Belong Together"
Review:  A cheeky teaser from Record Kicks' forthcoming Boogaloo Vol 6 album, here we find two authentic Latin northern soul covers originally recorded in the late 60s. "Hold On" takes the horn heavy Sam & Dave classic and gives it a rapid tongue Spanish twist while retaining the distinctive English chorus. "We Belong Together", meanwhile, is a more touching take on a Bobby Marin standard. With Giobel really belting out the crooning vocals and a lounge style polish to the horns, it's instant funk seduction. Only 500 of these 45s... So jump on this as soon as you can.

  1. The Meters - "Same Old Thing"
  2. Pete Rock & CL Smooth - "Good Life"
Review: Originals label pay homage to the fine art of sampling once again with this ace 7" dedicated to The Meters. Responsible for some of the best breakbeat contributions of all time, here we find their 1970 classic "Same Old Thing" (taken from their Struttin album) in all its bass-thumping, organ-slapping glory. Meanwhile on the B we hear just how it inspired Pete Rock and CL Smooth with the still-fresh "Good Life". An unmissable celebration of classic funk and hip-hop where the Originals imprint continues to impress.

Review: By now a well-oiled machine, the Strut compilation programme switches attentions to the Caribbean and Haiti in particular with Haiti Direct: Big Band, Mini Jazz & Twoubadou Sounds 1960-1978. The double LP package (which comes with 2CD edition too) was compiled by Hugo Mendez, the Paris-based DJ whose work as part of the Sofrito collective ensures him the perfect position to curate this release in a manner few can match. This impressive collection of tracks documents the country's overlooked musical legacy from the '60s and '70s , going beyond Ra-ra and voodoo stereotypes to trace the development of a unique sound that echoed across the Caribbean. The exploratory package also includes in-depth liner notes and interviews with some of the musicians of the era, with part of the release's profits donated to the Partners In Health charity.

Review: Revivalist funk and soul veterans Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings appeared to have drawn the curtain down on their career back in 2011, with the release of the well-timed retrospective Soul Time. Happily, they were just on hiatus, and three years on return with their first album of new material since 2010. For those who enjoy their sweet, soulful, faithful recreation of original '60s and '70s soul, this should be cause for rejoicing. Certainly, Give The People What They Want lives up to its title, delivering a blend of strong songs, heart-aching lyrics, nostalgic production and superb playing.

Review: One of the many highlights from his album Bosq Y Orquesta De Madera, "Paciencia De Jo" shows Whiskey Baron Bosq at his most sedate and soulful. A future Balearic classic blessed with the heart-melting vocals of Tita Lima, it oozes sunset charm throughout. For this special white vinyl release Ubiquity have invited Tall Black Guy to the fray for a stunning re-touch. Retaining the lush vibes of the original while adding a smooth sense of jazz and additional percussion, it complements the original with every soulful ebb and flow. Paciencia is a virtue, possess it if you can!

Review: Another fine lesson in deep crate curation, Jazzman rediscover the criminally overlooked skills of Virginia troubadour Lenis Guess. Recorded during the late 60s and 70s, many of the cuts on this special triple-7" box set have never been further than the state line. Which is utter madness... Just listen to the lavish, lolloping bass jam on "How You Gonna Do It", the firing JB-style horn drama of "Thank Goodness Gotta Good Woman" and the raw belly-bound blues soul of "Workin' For My Baby" and you'll wonder how he remained an obscurity for so long. Complete with detailed liner notes, this is a must for all funk aficionados.

Review: One of Nigeria's most consistent Afrofunk contributors, Peter King released six albums during 10 years between the 70s and 80s. Each of them deserves attention and Omo Lewa is a great place to start. Still just as resonant with funk floors today as it ever was, highlights abound; from the savage organ slapping on "Yere Africa" to the softer groove, sad sax and golden harmonies on "Eda" via the fiery flute fusion and subtle highlife guitar sparkle on "Congo", there's something very special - not to mention timeless - about this album.

Review: If their name didn't prove otherwise, you'd be convinced the Warsaw Afrobeat Orchestra came straight out of Lagos and not Poland. Bold, brassy and focussed squarely on the dancefloor everything about this stuns; from the crafty vocal dynamics to the creative guitar sub-melody and bright, tight horn hooks. Complete with an instrumental and a swinging remix from the Whiskey Baron's Bosq, Ubiquity have unearthed a truly unique act right here.

  1. Young Hearts Run Free
Review: An out-and-out disco classic, Candi Staton's "Young Hearts Run Free" enjoys another reissue from Warner's German office. David Crawford's production remains as bold, full-bodied and confident as it did in 1976 while Candi's golden tones tremor with raw emotion and emphasis. Instant sing-along power, instant floor pleasure, if your collection doesn't include this, now is the time to address it.
