Juno Recommends Hip Hop / R&B: July 2024

Review: Grammy award-winner Tyla broke the internet with her viral track 'Water', becoming the first South African artist in over 55 years to enter the Billboard Hot 100 - as well as the youngest South African of all time ever to do so. The 'Water' challenge swept the internet, earning her top ten placements in multiple countries and nominations for various awards - rightly so, her voice is sultry, the beat is smooth and the hook is infectious. On the other side of the 7" coin is Nigerian Afrobeat sensation Rema with his career-defining breakout hit 'Calm Down', his vocal talent shining through the minimal instrumentation. It's easy to see why the world was entranced, bolstered massively by a remix featuring Selena Gomez that has since led the track to be nominated for several Billboard and MTV awards, as well as holding a long list of world records: Most streamed Afrobeat song on Spotify, Longest charting African song on Billboard, most watched Nigerian music video... we could go on.

Review: Curated by the legendary producer Arthur Baker, Breakers Revenge is a comprehensive compilation of original funk, soul, Latin, disco and electro tracks from 1970-1984. These tracks, ranging from well-known classics to hidden gems, have become legendary in the world of breakdancing. Featuring seminal tracks like Dennis Coffey's 'Scorpio', The Jimmy Castor Bunch's 'It's Just Begun' and Afrika Bambaataa's groundbreaking 'Planet Rock', this collection embodies the essence of breakdancing culture. The percussive breakdowns and infectious beats of these tracks have not only been the soundtrack to countless block parties and park jams but have also been sampled by numerous hip-hop artists and producers. With extensive liner notes and track-by-track breakdowns, Breakers Revenge is perfect time capsule for fans of breakdancing, hip-hop and music enthusiasts.

Review: After the enormously positive response to the first edition of the Prodigy edits, Dope Edits is back with a follow up 7". The Russian turntablist and DJ Paul Sitter is also a deft and experienced editor. A lover of all things hip-hop, it is natural for him to create urban renditions of rock and popular songs. These two tracks presented here originally remixed by the 90s techno act Prodigy's leader Liam Howlett. For the first side, Paul remixes Iggy Pop's 'Lust For Life' into a bombastic alternate version that is sure to raise the roof and turn the heads of who hears it. For the second side, 'Just Like You' by Ian Brown is turned into a frenzied and futuristic version that is unique. Whether you know the original songs, you got to check these out.

Review: Beastie Boys' classic 1994 album, Ill Communication, is getting a special deluxe edition reissue on vinyl to celebrate its 30th anniversary. The remastered 3xLP set resurrects a rare version initially released as a limited run in 2009 that includes 12 bonus tracks - rarities, a live version of Check Your Head's 'The Maestro,' B-sides, and remixes - all adding to what is already a spectacularly varied and wonderfully sprawling album. Ill Communication was the fourth studio album by the New York-based hip-hop ensemble, featuring hit singles like 'Sabotage' and 'Get It Together.' This reissue follows recent re-releases of other Beastie Boys' albums, including Hello, Nasty and Check Your Head and further highlights the group's 'giants of the 90s' status.

Review: Prolific producer Inkswel becomes Inxxxwel for this new outing on 7" via the always excellent GAMM label. It's a two-tracker that is packed with hip hop, funk, soul and opens with 'Chill' - a Space Funk rework alongside Leonard Charles - which echoes the work of the great J Dilla as well as having some lush 90s r&b overtones. On the B-side, things get pitched down into New Jersey house territory with more sultry r&b tones on the excellent 'Hanna-Mi-Dia' (Inkswel Jazz Cigarette Mash Up) which features vocals from Blu & Ta'Raach. Two red hot jams, for sure.

Review: Milkcrate Mondays has got a red hot 7" on its hands here with DJ Abel and DJ Spinobi taking one side each. The former kicks off by, says the label, "taking an Ocean classic for a trip to Miami." His take on 'Lost' is a funk-laced jam that blends r&b vocals with bubbling beats and jazzy keys into something brilliantly seductive. On the flip side, DJ Spinobi lays down some heavyweight Afro drum patterns and raw rap bars on 'Bay Bunny' while 'PRVNZA VIP' is a more blissed-out island sound with reggaeton undertones and angelic Spanish vocals up top. A real summer weapon.

Review: Lupe Fiasco's latest album Samurai delves deep into personal reflections, which is a departure from his usual repertoire. Exploring his experiences as an artist, Lupe weaves narratives of a battle rapper's journey through career highs and lows. Produced entirely by longtime collaborator Soundtrakk, the album also marks a reunion with manager Charles "Chill" Patton. Lupe's lyrical prowess shines throughout, blending playful storytelling with profound insights on rap culture's trials and triumphs. Inspired by his lifelong commitment to martial arts, Lupe interprets "samurai" as a call to serve, reflecting on his duty to the rap community and beyond. As such the record encapsulates Lupe's enduring dedication to his craft and his personal growth results in an absorbing listen.

Review: With Slow Burn, Baby Rose showcases a remarkable evolution from her previous album, expanding her sonic palette into a raw and sprawling exploration of American music. Teaming up with BADBADNOTGOOD, Rose delves into progressive r&b, infusing elements of Muscle Shoals, psych, jazz, and Americana to create a mesmerizing collection of songs. The collaboration with BADBADNOTGOOD proved to be an instant and fruitful partnership, with lead single 'One Last Dance' capturing the essence of Rose's vision from the very first meeting. This track, disguised as a love song, is actually an ode to lost friendship, with Rose's vocals layered into a hypnotic lullaby over Chester Hansen's dreamlike bassline. Throughout Slow Burn, Rose draws inspiration from her experiences driving between the chaos of DC and the tranquility of the Carolina countryside, allowing her mind to wander and explore internal dialogues. The title track exemplifies this introspective journey, with soft, ambling drums and lyrical repetitions evoking patient desire. Overall, 'Slow Burn' exudes a sense of intimacy and mystery, with each song arriving on tiptoe, inviting listeners into Rose's world of introspection and emotion. As a vocalist and lyricist, Rose demonstrates boundless potential, supported by the synergy of her collaboration with BADBADNOTGOOD. This album marks a significant step forward for Baby Rose, hinting at even greater heights to come in her musical journey.

Review: Kool Keith, Jazz T and Doctor Zygote deliver a lyrical gem with 'Heavyweights.' This track isn't a diss, but a declaration of superior MC skills, featuring a heavy bassline and a jazz-infused, ominous mood reminiscent of a detective movie soundtrack. Kool Keith's standout chops make this a classic. Side-2 offers the instrumental version, showing the intricate production and allowing the dark, jazzy atmosphere to shine on its own sounding like an eerie detective show. 'Heavyweights' is a great addition to any hip-hop/r&b collection, highlighting the artistry of these heavy-hitting collaborators.

Review: Reggie Ray's latest release, timed with the Paris '24 Olympics Breaking event, pays homage to street culture with a heartfelt record. With intricate production and a nod to New York '72, it's a fitting tribute to DJ Regal's innovative spirit. The artwork by Optic Intake adds visual depth, resonating with the energy of the FBV Crew and the late Paul Eve's enduring influence. Released by Lexington144 Records, this EP blends nostalgia with contemporary beats, showcasing Reggie Ray's mastery in crafting dynamic, street-inspired tracks. A poignant note honors Eve's legacy, promising future releases from Lexington 144 Records. This release not only celebrates breaking culture but also tells about the enduring impact of its creators.

Review: With 'breaking' making its debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics, it seems an apt time to go back to where it all began and showcase some of the music that first made break-dancers move in the early years of hip-hop culture. Soul Jazz Records clearly agrees, hence this two-disc retrospective of early 'breaker' favourites curated by Arthur Baker - a man who's productions and remixes soundtracked many dancefloor battles in the early 80s. It's a suitably strong selection all told, with dusty funk, soul and funk-rock favourites (Johnny Bristol, James Brown, The Jimmy Castor Bunch, Spanky Wilson) being joined by disco-funk jams (Herman Kelly and Life), extra-percussive workouts (Manu Dibango, Mongo Santamaria, Candido) and a smattering of key Baker productions (Afrika Bambaata and Soul Sonic Force's 'Planet Rock' and his own infectious 'Breakers Revenge').

Review: Casquiat - a mysterious production moniker, and clear play on words of the name of a famous New York neo-expressionist artist, punned with either a casket or casque (we're not sure which) - lays down an equally mysterious but also supremely effective edit of the infamous Boyz II Men tune, 'If I Ever Fall In Love Again', re-baptizing it 'Lady Friend' and lending two alternate takes on the rerub (whether 'Bad Self' or 'Lady Storm' are artists or mix names, we also can't tell). Whereas the original track's bittersweet barbershop tones exist purely as an acapella - unusually, in their case, it was an original acapella, not recorded for a produced pop song - Casquiat lays down two, boxy contemporary breaks / hip-hop mashups here, one operative at 90bpm and the other more at 70bpm, and both bringing unusual dubby flavours to an otherwise pure R&B hit.

Review: With his latest record Dark Times, we're convinced of Vince Staples' staple status. Staples' final release with Def Jam after seeing through a ten+ year contract, this sixth studio album from the rapper marks a demure sense of continuation, to keep chugging and plugging away at his craft, despite the encroach of a progressively bleak era. Peppered throughout with perfidious sonic interludes as 'Liars' and 'Close Your Eyes And Swing', Staples opts for a well-developed mode of soundscapery, while fully formed songs like 'Shame On The Devil' contrast to this with a sheer sense of determination, reaffirming Staples' longing for wholesomeness and wellbeing, building on lessons learned and wisdom gained.

Review: Snoop Dogg's No Limit Top Dogg marked a significant return to form after his previous two projects, which some felt leaned more towards the No Limit sound than his own. While it may not quite reach the career pinnacle of Doggystyle, it showcases Snoop Dogg finding his groove again, sounding more authentic and engaged than in recent efforts. The album's production, featuring beats from Dr Dre, DJ Quik and others, harks back to the golden era of Death Row Records, adding to the nostalgia with appearances from his old Death Row associates. The album's success, reaching the top of the US Top r&b/hip-hop albums chart and peaking at number two on the Billboard 200, speaks to its popularity and Snoop Dogg's enduring appeal. Singles like 'Buck'em', 'Down 4 My N's', and 'Bitch Please' were standouts from this period of his career.

Review: Saib.'s debut album, Around The World, stunned listeners who got to hear this album on the first release back in 2019. Now reissued, the various global sounds, reflecting the cultural melting pot of Casablanca is once again, the talk of reissues. With intricate guitar work and hip-hop beats as its backbone, the album seamlessly transitions between jazz, lounge, Asian textures, and more. Each track is a unique exploration of saib.'s influences, showcasing his versatility and musical talent. From the upbeat funk of 'Casablanca Funk' to the serene beauty of 'Lullaby,' and the exotic allure of 'Shanghai Nights,' every moment is riveting. Remastered for enhanced quality, Around The World is a memorable trip into the sounds of a foreign country and its culture.

Review: PARTYNEXTDOOR's eponymous album marks an evolution from his debut, shedding the occasional sleaze for a more benevolent swagger. Jahron Brathwaite crafts an album that blends self-assured cockiness with sincere admiration for his subjects, notably on tracks like 'East Liberty' and the Drake-assisted 'Recognize.' His production, thick and molasses-like, veers between nostalgic 90s r&b vibes and experimental twists that nod to modern rap landscapes. While some sample choices falter, such as the derivative use of Disclosure's 'Latch' on 'Sex on a Beach,' Brathwaite's ability to craft mood remains a standout feature. PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO asserts itself as a compelling entry in Toronto's ratch&b scene, with Brathwaite's artist growth on full display and his knack for blending contemporary influences with his own distinctive style.

Review: The Inner Tribe Records crew here celebrate the very best of their works, inviting over four sides' worth of contributions to the label over the years from such friends and associates as Erin Buku, Prozier, JuzzOne, Inkswel and DJ Applejac. Finding a locus of enjoyment in the theme of family, this spicy soul, hip-hop and funk collection aims to flesh out each of their roster-thrall's individual characters; it does so charmingly, in the cute interplay between the Polaroid memorabilia making up the front cover and the well-balanced hi-fi lo-fi moods found inside. Our favourite on the comp has to be Ben Iota's 'Present Company', for its large-surround chords and weighty rap mix.

Review: Released 35 years ago, the Jungle Brothers' Done By The Forces Of Nature remains a beacon to their pioneering spirit within the Native Tongues collective. This reissued vinyl edition revitalises their ambitious blend of hip-hop, funk, and socio-political commentary. From the pulsating rhythms of 'Beyond This World' to the soulful introspection of 'Feelin' Alright,' the album bridges intellectual depth with dancefloor appeal. Tracks like 'What You Waitin' 4?' and 'J Beez Comin' Through' still resonate with their infectious energy and eclectic sampling. The Jungle Brothers' lyrical talent, coupled with their forward-thinking production, shines anew, offering a timeless narrative of cultural identity and societal consciousness. Done By The Forces Of Nature remains a standout achievement in hip-hop, reaffirming its relevance in both artistic and social contexts, and its reissue on vinyl serves as a vibrant homage to its enduring influence.

Review: A gold vinyl version of PeteStrumentals 2, the long-awaited sequel to his 2001 instrumental debut that was originally released in 2015. Known for his iconic 90s golden age contributions, Pete Rock's craft remains impeccable, even if his mainstream presence has waned slightly and whether working with lesser-known MCs or big names, his beats consistently shine. Great instrumental hip-hop albums often feel like immersive journeys, and PeteStrumentals 2 achieves this with its distinctive horn loops and lush keyboards. The drums, central to Pete's sound, still hit with precision. Tracks like 'Heaven & Earth' begin with experimental textures before settling into a solid groove, showcasing his blend of melodic finesse and rhythmic strength. Pete Rock's evolution as an elder statesman in hip-hop is evident, with tracks paying homage to influences like J Dilla while staking his own claim. The album's atmosphere mixes nostalgia with contemporary beatmaking techniques, featuring samples from David Axelrod, Isaac Hayes and Black Heat, generally reaffirming Pete Rock's status as an enduring hip-hop production great.

Review: The long-awaited analog version of the Japan Edition of Willie The Kid's The Fly 2.0; the Japan Edition qualifier is technically redundant, however, as the Michigan rapper's Fly 2.0 album was itself produced as a Japan-only project in 2011, coinciding with a worldwide tour that year. A hidden underground hip-hop opus of otherwise incomparable quality, The Fly 2.0 mixes the august braggadocios and machismos of '10s-era pop-rap with a subtly experimental production bent, with production credits to the likes of Lee Bannon and The Alchemist being of of especial note here. Full of experimental beats and weird playings-on/amplifications of bling-era megalomania, this is a retrospective reissue like no other, one that deserves all the consideration it can get a full decade on.

Review: Omar Apollo's latest promises a deeply personal journey through the aftermath of a tumultuous love affair - the album's title, inspired by the Spanish phrase "lo que sera, sera," reflects Apollo's tongue-in-cheek acceptance of life's twists and turns. With executive production by Teo Halm, God Said No features collaborations with musician Mustafa and actor Pedro Pascal. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios in London and fine-tuned across studios in Los Angeles, New York and Miami, the album showcases Apollo's soulful vocals and introspective lyrics. The prelude single, 'Spite,' and the newly released 'Dispose of Me,' accompanied by a live performance video featuring a 14-piece ensemble, offer a glimpse into Apollo's emotionally charged storytelling. This album is shaping up to be a poignant and intimate exploration of heartbreak and resilience in the face of life's uncertainties.

Review: When asked in a 2023 interview why he hadn't contributed any production work to long-time collaborator Future's 2022 ninth full-length I Never Liked You, tireless hip-hop producer Metro Boomin revealed that he was aiming to save his beats for a potential collaborative album, which now appears to have been the plan all along. Marrying the aquatic, lysergic production style Boomin has helped to majorly popularise with Future's hazy, xanned out delivery, the duo deliver a trap opus weaving the most accessible and underground facets of the genre into one malleable set of fluid bangers, while the guest feature section boasts a who's-who of modern day hip-hop acts such as The Weeknd, Rick Ross, Playboi Carti, Travis Scott and Kendrick Lamar. The project also would eventually be retconned as part one in their ongoing collaboration series with the follow up to We Still Don't Trust you dropping only three weeks later.
