Actress Meets Shangaan A
Actress Meets Shangaan B
Review: Given its loose nature, the prospect of reworkings of Shangaan music from Actress, whose material is often as wild and tumbling as it comes, was always going to be something far out, and he hasn't disappointed us. His A-Side is pure Drexciyan funk bliss, as disembodied vocals are smeared in broken chords, R2-D2 bleeps and radio static beamed in from a distant nebula, cracked and warped but somehow with a solid pulse at its core. The B-Side meanwhile is even crazier, keeping the furious tempo of the original music but distilling it down to its base elements, leaving a marimba tone that is blunt and vehemently lo-fi, but somehow coming across with the same haunted atmosphere as its counterpart. Highly recommended.

Lost

Back In The Days
Electric Sea
Review: If you found yourself hankering for the early Joker sound when you heard his debut album The Vision last year, then this slab of instrumentals should fill the gap. Without the mixture of disparate vocalists, the tracks themselves have the space to breath. Certainly the same jovial 8 bit melodies have stayed with Joker since day one, no more so than on title track "The Vision (Let Me Breath)". The crafty pop production on "Lost" shines in its raw form, but somewhat tellingly "Back In The Day" is the track that stands out.

Dusk - "Fraction"
Dusk - "Fraction" (Kowton remix)
Kowton - "Looking At You"
Review: With 2011 being Keysound's most prolific year to date, the label enters 2012 with a fantastic EP from two of the label's old hands, Dusk and Kowton. Utilising a clipped UK Funky beat and restless sub with symphonic ambience, Dusk's "Fraction" expertly channels its rhythmic intensity, while Kowton's rework highlights the production's darker corners, utilising sinister melodies and collage-like movie samples to nightmarish effect. Kowton's "Looking At You" occupies the B-Side; taking a brittle Destiny's Child sample as its main hook, it manages to sidestep the problems usually associated with contemporary R&B sampling by keeping its melodic elements to a minimum, concentrating on shackled garage rhythms and a growling undercurrent of bass. It's more overtly contemporary than his recent material for [Naked Lunch] and Idle Hands, but still has all the unmistakable hallmarks of his unique sound.

All Over Me
Dense
Dense (French Fries remix)
Review: Fledgling South London imprint cut an impressive swathe with their debut drop from Visionist last year, and their second release from hotly tipped Puerto Rican producer Magnum maintains the standard. Lead track "All Over Me" emerges from the icy ether, slipping a winning array of tightly wrapped chrome snare rolls, opiated synths and manipulated diva vocals over simmering a bed of sub bass menace - it comes across as the paranoid cousin to Teeth's "Shawty". The scale of epicness there is complemented by the smooth, expertly edited "Dense" which appropriates junglist rhythms to a 23rd century pattern that showcases Magnum's craft for gut pushing bass frequencies. There's a nice stripped down almost grime refix of "Dense" from French Fries too!

Bump & Grind
Closer
Review: A new year and a new label for Jon Convex with the self referential Convex Industries launching in style with two solo cuts from the Instra:mental man. Both "Bump And Grind" and flipside "Closer" demonstrate a growing confidence in Convex's self styled "Electronic Party Music" which is better than the "post whatever" or "UK treble music" umbrella terms. The finely sculpted production techniques of his Non Plus output alongside Al Bleeky are melded with a sense of fun via vocals pitched beyond recognition, glitched textures and almost twee melodic touches (the A Side in particular). The friskier "Closer" is our favourite here, utilising and twisting the vocal sample so it becomes an active part of the burrowing electro rhythms.

Landscapes (feat Simbad)
It's Serious (feat Karizma)
Review: The promise of Cooly G's releases for Hyperdub et al turns into maddening anticipation as the first taste of her forthcoming album sneaks out months ahead of the game! First up it's "Landscapes", co-produced with Simbad, and utterly devastating in its use of simple elements for maximum effect. A broken beat ticks steadily away under glossy, undulating streams of pads while Cooly herself enchants with her Neneh Cherry style vocal delivery. "It's Serious" on the flipside sees Cooly linking up with certified house legend Karizma for a more chunky, beat-driven offering that will slay floors in the same way that Altered Natives' "Rass Out" did some years back.

Stableface (original mix)
Stableface (Peverelist remix)
Review: "Stableface", one of the standout tracks from Lithuanian producer Eleven Tigers' debut album "Clouds Are Mountains" found itself pride of place on this 12" release from Soul Motive. Opening with an extended intro of cracked Burial-like atmospherics, the track soon gains a life of its own with its minimal 2-step beat and cracked vocal samples, complete with the kind of intricate melodicism of Four Tet. On the flip side Bristol's Peverelist turns in a fine reworking of the track. Taking the already sparse original and extending its panoramic reach even further, he concentrates on the micro qualities of the rhythms, opens up huge holes in the original's deft tapestry and creates a masterful reworking which brings out the dubstep within its DNA.

Progression
Progression (Indigo remix)
Review: Exit turn to more experimental fare after the tribalistic menace of Dub Phizix and Skeptical's all conquering Marka, with the excellent Synkro making a welcome return. The producer has been dabbling in some decidedly frosted house and techno deviations for the likes of Styrax and Millions of Moments in recent times, and though "Progression" retains some of the steamed out atmospherics of Synkro's release on the former, the track does shift closer to the 170bpm marker. Drum programming that feels almost brittle in texture scales upwards through a backdrop of sumptuous harmonies and pensive textures. Studio cohort Indigo aligns the B Side with a remix that wisely retains the original's charm whilst laying down some staccato bursts of sub bass and chopped drums. Tough!

Listen To My 45
Knowing Looks
Review: Returning to WNCL after his exuberant re-emergence last year, Knowing Looks doesn't hold back in testing the limits of the dancefloor. "Listen To My 45" is the kind of track specifically crafted to sit uneasily in your ears on first listen but in time the wildly disparate elements amass to a glorious cacophony of damaged, unconventional groove. "Ghost Baby" darts into action on an uptempo micro-house groove before adopting a deranged synth. By the time thick layers of percussion and amen breaks whip around that lead synth there's no doubt that you're listening to one of the most starkly original producers in operation at present.

I Remain
Noboru
Review: Punch Drunk present another hitherto unfamiliar name in the form of Zhou, reminding you just what made dubstep so alluring in its infancy. The gorgeous chords which form the centrepoint of "I Remain" come on dark and exotic at once, while the devastatingly simple beat rolls and bumps with understated ripples of percussion. "Noburu" on the flip is a far more daring affair, as distant drones and low-end textures rumble in beatless space. For a first release on a prominent label limited to two tracks, it's an artist with utmost conviction that opts to fill a side with a few minutes of textural ambience. Highly recommended.

Gerry Read - "Roomland" (Distal remix)
23Hz & Numaestro - "Zumo" (Sully remix)
Review: 2nd Drop present this suitably slick and forward thinking first vinyl drop of 2012, enlisting some burgeoning production talent to tackle tracks from the label's recent and not so recent history. First up Atlanta's hotly tipped Distal takes on the excellent Gerry Read, twisting the steppish smudged house of "Roomland" into a finely honed and rapid fire footwork assault, full of tumbling toms and vocal hooks while the melodic mystery of the original remains. Flipside and Keysound lynchpin Sully digs deep into the 2nd Drop archives to rework 23Hz and Numaestro's "Zumo" - originally out back in 2009 - switching the track into a reduced garage roller, emphasising the funk and keeping the subby bass swells lean and mean. It's a freaky space his remix inhabits; somewhere near the early days of Horsepower with that addictive whip crack beat and ambiguous atmosphere.
