Direct Drive
My Life
Review: Something of an event here, as Detroit veteran Delano Smith returns to his Mixmode imprint for the first time since 2009. As usual, Smith is in deep mode, flexing his Motor City credentials on two near-perfect late night shufflers. A side "Direct Drive" is particularly impressive. Like the best house music from Detroit, it oozes warmth and soul, building a gently throbbing groove via beautiful, subterranean melodies, hissing hi-hats and relentless low-end hustle. On the flip "My Life" is almost as impressive, layering long, loping beatdown chords over clipped guitars, languid beats and the deftest of keys.

You Might Lose It (Kerri Chandler JX 8P mix)
Review: One sided clear vinyl bearing the name Kerri Chandler? Yes please. The New Jersey deep house don has already remixed Makam's "You Might Lose It" - twice - but obscure label HSUS treat us to a third version, which comes replete with the requisite chiselled Chandler kick drum, offset by some deliciously warm chords, occasional twinkling keys and a shuffling groove. A nice, controlled punch to the production marks this as one that will stand out on nicely tweaked sound systems.

On The Inside (The Revenge Memory Warehouse remix)
Moonrunners
Review: The seemingly unstoppable ascent of Deep Space Orchestra continues apace. Here they pop up on Schmoov's Nottingham-based imprint with another gorgeous selection of galactic house grooves. There's the now traditional 'jazz meets deep house meets The Sky At Night' B-side (in this case, "Moonrunners") and the bonus big name remix (in this case a brilliantly springy late night romp from The Revenge). It's lead cut "Midnight Caller" that impresses most, not least because it neatly sums up DSO's appeal. Within its irresistibly fresh deep house grooves lie nods to nu disco, Detroit techno, twinkling ambience and rough acid house, all wrapped up in DSO's delicious production veneer.

Lookin' U In The I (Dreamily)
Review: Altered Moods boss Malcolm Moore releases the first solo EP under his own name, with the lush soundscapes of Yours In Deepness Volume 1. From the dreamy "Introlude" through to the orchestral strings and barely-there beat on "Everything" and gentle woodwind assisted shuffle of "Trusting", Moore shows himself to be a capable hand when it comes to the deeper end of house. The moody, introspective vibe is maintained on the flip, with the gentle chiming melody of "Juswannabeclose" a particular highlight.

Hot & Heavy
Ocean Calling
Review: Disco Bloodbath's Dan Beaumont and Ben Rymer (formerly of Fat Truckers and Gucci Soundsystem) present a second volume of tracks from their recently formed Jam Factory project. Anyone who was quick enough to sweep up last summers Volume One or smart enough to indulge in the recent Jam Factory remix of Discodeine will know what to expect. Raw visceral warehouse flexxers delivered after hours, days, weeks of experimentation with as much vintage analogue equipment the duo can source. "Ocean Calling" drips with unrefined energy, expertly teasing out heavy piano stabs and orgasmic female utterings over a bottom heavy proto house groove filled with a procession of delightfully obscene jacking drums that builds and drops with an dancefloor expertise you'd expect from these two. "Hot & Heavy" naturally displays a similar panache for throwback house, driven by a subterranean bass line and crisp drum kicks, heavily dubbed vocal samples punctuating the ascent to the inevitable bumping groove. Is it the weekend yet?

Riding In My Imaginary Jeep (OOFT remix)
Riding In My Imaginary Jeep
Sir Shina
Review: Ever since the release of the fabulous Trust Skynet EP, Deep Space Orchestra have been tipped as 'ones to watch' by many of the deep house community's biggest names. Listening to this second EP, and their debut on Foto, it's not hard to see why. Their productions sound cosily deep and melodic, yet their basslines are tough and their beats boast a distinctive swing. This is particularly noticeable on the title track and accompanying remix from FOTO boss OOFT - both have the sort of stargazing quality that used to be the sole preserve of Detroit's finest. Even more impressive is the experimental "Sic Shina", an ocean-deep roller that somehow melds jazz beats, Afro vocals and deep house with stunning results.

Blooming
Review: Straight-up dancefloor fun here from Joss Moog, featuring four booty-shaking slabs of boompty bizniz reminiscent of Classic in their pomp. From the first to the last, Moog delivers cuts that recall the glory days of Derrick Carter, Luke Solomon and company, with just enough noughties bounce to please contemporary DJs. The grooves, in particular, are spot on, pairing thumping low-end kicks with snappy, head-cracking snares and just the right amount of cymbal hiss. The usual boompty staples are present, not least cute vocal edits ("Seventy Three") and quick fire samples (check the cheeky nod to Skyy's "Here's To You" on "My MPC Gently Weeps"). As my housemate would say, bangin!

Without Me (Marcus Worgull vocal - Dixon edit)
Without Me (Hyena Stop remix)
Review: Tevo Howard's deep and emotive brand of deep house and Tracey Thorn's legendary mournful voice are a match made in heaven - we know that - and here Rebirth offer a superb addendum to the original release with a couple of superb remixes, pressed up on clear vinyl. The Dixon edit of the Marcus Worgull vocal remix (Dixon loves doing this doesn't he?) sees late night chords slowly rising from the ether to work in truly emotive harmony with Thorn's vocals. A more bumpin' refix can be found in the form of the Hyena Stop remix over on the flip.

Okain - "Corner Boys"
Alex Dee - "Sundae"
Yakine - "U Dance"
Varoslav - "Dancing Like Ghost"
Review: Jetaime, staying true to our name, drop yet another large helping of sensual beats, with Volume 2 of our 'Love Session' series.

Today's lesson's in love, are provided by some of our closest friends and label regulars. Each delivering a scorchingly hot original, set to send you into sensory overload.

First up is Okain who, having brought us the incredible 'Acrobat' back in January, steps up again to reveal, what for us, is one of his finest works to date. 'Corner Boys' couldn't be more fitting for 'Love Session'. Its classic beats, sexy vocal sample and hip-grinding, oldschool bassline make it, ok not 'love', but most definitely, SEX!!

Alex steps up himself on track two, and brings us the deliciously sweet and creamy, 'Sundae'. Inventive and ever so tongue in cheek, Alex matches iconic hip-hop, with his modern Parisian beats, to create a perfect party anthem.

From the house-party, to the rave on track number three from, Varoslav. As its name suggests, 'Dancin' Like Ghosts' has a spooky and hypnotic feel. The constant pulse of delicate synths, pierced by hollow beats and piercing hats, together with its demonic vocal, make it a perfect number for those dark cellar gigs.

Finally, and rounding out the EP is Yakine, who delivers a fresh slab of Chicago-inspired house with 'U Dance'. Its killer B-Line, filtered Rhodes and spoken vocal, warms the heart as well as the feet, and make it the perfect track to round out the EP.

Overall a quite stunning collection of tracks, that we are extremely proud of. So come and join us, and get down to some serious lovin'!!

Poulet Gauffre (original)
Poulet Gauffre (Derek Dunbar's remix)
Takin Em Black
Review: Lost My Dog's resident Frenchman Giom teams up with US jock Derek Dunbar for some house movements on Amenti! Confusingly commencing with Giom's remix of their collab, "Poulet Gaufre", you are eased into subtley jacking territory filled with filtered sweeps, off kilter vocals edits and all encompassing synth washes. The original version which follows, sticks to a straighter rhythmic template, cleverly building towards a bumping mid section driven by a tasty filtered bassline. Dunbar's version on the flip uses a heavyweight bass drum which demands playtime on a big sound system. Rounding matters off is "Takin Em Black" which drops the tempo to head nod pace, cutting up synth hits and sampled vox over crisp beats and a snug bass line.

Who Killed Captain Alex?
It's Vinter Welcome To Sverige
Review: Gothenburg-based producers Shakarchi & Straneus received a fair amount of praise for their debut release on Geography Recordings, the double A side "Macedonia"/"Iraq". It's likely that more plaudits will be coming their way soon, thanks to this joyous five tracker for the Studio Barnhus imprint. Dodskallar Och Korallev (try saying that after a boozy night out) sees them cheerily flitting between styles, from classic deep house ("Clinton Hill" & "Who Killed Captain Alex") and nu-disco influenced piano jams ("Mogadishu") to triple-beat Gonkyberg jazz ("Liseberg") and even a dash of downtempo ("It's Vinter Welcome To Sveirge"). Given the duo's relative lack of production experience, we can't help but be impressed.

Track 1
Track 2
Track 3
Review: The ever mysterious Italojohnson returns with a third EP of untitled studio jams, with a distinctly Musiq Box flavour to the three tracks here. Readily admitting to wearing his influences on his figurative sleeve - you kind of imagine Johnson to rock the vest look - the A Side hogger delights in particular, a bottom heavy track filled with raw yet crisp layers of percussion and drum machine fills with a vocal "Fantasize Me" sample that begins deep in the mix before rising to prominence. On the flip, the pressurised industrial locked groove of the opening track is soon overcome by a brilliantly twisting acid melody whilst the final track impresses the most with a vintage yet menacing electro pose; all crisp 808 kicks, thudding bass hits and hushed vocoderisms the prelude to some excellently tinny synth patterns.
