Cookin' (4:27)
Cokin' & Tokin' (3:46)
Review: With a name like Tortilla Factory, it's no surprise this band emerged from the Chicano scene of 1970s Texas. Despite releasing several albums throughout the decade, the band's music remains frustratingly difficult to locate in the vinyl format. Step forward Fryer's Athens of the North label who come through with a fine 7" of their material primed for the floor. "Cookin'" is nuthin' but a fine, sleek funk track with all the trimming - horns, slap-bass, organs, you name it! "Cokin' & Tokin'", on the other hand, is a funner, more uplifting, and an absolute pleasure to move your hips to. Funky doesn't even cover it..!

It's Just Begun (3:43)
Troglodyte (Cave Man) (3:34)
Review: Fresh from 72: Two enormously influential funk gems from Jimmy Castor bunch's debut album It's Just Begun: The heavily-sampled title track is a veritable racecourse of a groove, hurtling around with cyclical glee and hooky chanting vocals while "Troglodyte" is a playful observation on man's more basic wants and needs. Both have aged exceedingly well... As has almost all of Jimmy Castor's work.

Good Fight (4:01)
Funkaphrenic (2:51)
Review: "Good Fight" by Templebys is one of those hidden, hard-to-find funk gems that belong only to the most frantic of collectors out there - or is it? Well, it sounds and looks like it should be, but in reality it's new music recorded in 2015. This is Funkaphrenic's first release, and the title tune is simply marvellous, a liquid-like soul bomb with a funky edge and one hell of a mean groove - top of the funk charts this week, without a doubt! On the flip of the 7", you'll find "Funkaphrenic" itself, a fast-paced, organ-charged monster to lift the dance floor and get all the dancers shakin'.

Soul Travellin' (The GBE) (part 1) (3:22)
Soul Travellin' (The GBE) (part 2) (3:11)
Review: Fancy a whirlwind trip around soul and funk's most evocative moments and talented individuals with sliver tongued tour guide whose prose flow like lyrical sweet nectar? Look. No. Further. Frequent Stevie Wonder collaborator, lyricist, radio show host (both in the US and in the UK on the BBC for spell in the 80s) and certified G, Gary's genius two-part homage to 60s/70s soul and funk is a genuine work of wonder. Essential.

Rail Band - "Maribayasa" (5:24)
Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako - "Get Up James" (4:04)
Review: Destination Mali: it's the early 70s, funk bands are popping in all directions and Rail Band and Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako are two key players. The former lay down a springy jam that opens with mischievous horns and won't quit until the final tinny guitar twangs. The latter pay homage to the big man JB with a heavy organ-slapped groove, big bold band orders and a dramatic crescendo. Powerful.

Spies Are Watching Me (7:15)
Le Disco Des Capitales (6:45)
Review: Sounds like it came out of Lagos in 1971, actually written and recorded in Lyon in 2015: Voilaaa is the brainchild of Bruno Hovart whose long relationship with Favorite goes way back to his days as Patchworks, Mr President and The Dynamics. Recording on a whole host of vintage machines and calling upon local African singers both cuts have a real authentic sense of realness; "Spies Are Watching Me" drives with big horns and swooning strings which isn't dissimilar to the work of The Movers, while the TY Boys-esque "Le Disco Des Capitales" is a heavier, more concentrated slab of floor-minded disco where the groove takes more of a forefront role. Apparently there's a whole album of this cooking... We can't wait to hear it.

Courtial - "Losing You" (with Errol Knowles) (3:05)
Sounds Of The City Experience - "Getting Down" (4:06)
Review: Weston's curatorial crusade continues as he unearths more criminally overlooked/under-pressed rarities from the golden ages; "Losing You" comes from Courtial and Errol Knowles outstanding 1976 soul jazz album. The most straight up soul joint from the album, it's an instant sweat-fest with real guts behind both the vocals and instrumentation. Flip for the jazz funk whirlwind that is "Getting Down". Taken from their eponymous, once-super rare ($1500 per copy rare) album (also released in 76), it's an instrumental hurricane led by strings, horns and bombastically swung drums. Powerful. Money Gone (4:16)
Money Gone (Smoove remix) (4:16)
Review: Smoother than silk socks, funkier than a rum cheese cake: Geordie seven piece King Bee deliver a highly limited 45". Their first new material since their self-titled debut last year, "Money Gone" is velvet funk instrumental with just a smidgeon of jazz. Heavy on the vibraphones and clam-tight horns, it's easy to understand why they've had such strong support of BBC's chief funk ambassador Craig Charles. Flip for an upbeat, breakbeat-based twist from Jalapeno artist (and fellow Geordie) Smoove. Only 200 copies.

Come On With The Come On (3:27)
TLC (3:14)
Review: The Symphonical label has absolutely no care for starting off slow and pacing themselves. This release by 9-piece Wisconsin outfit Upheaval is nothing short of a musical miracle. First of all, all of the members were behind jail bars when it was recorded, and hardly any of them had professional music training prior to its recording. In any case, 1979's "Come On With The Come On" is just about as funky, soulful and weird as you can get, and it will surely appeal to the more studious of diggers out there. On the flip, "TLC" is softer, more loving, but still contains that inherent grit that wraps these songs together. They were, after all, recorded with whatever was available in the pound.

Review: Long-established LA funk troupe Orgone re-deliver their 2015 album Beyond The Sun on gatefold coloured vinyl. As if the sounds were beautiful enough... Seven albums deep, the ever-expanding collective (who've backed the likes of Pharohe Monche, The Pharcyde and Plantlife) hone their sound to even tighter, silkier depths. Now rolling with new singer Adryon De Leon, there's a newfound sense of energy and style across the album. From the sweaty, stompy glam-funk grooves of "Someone's Love Is Real" to the smouldering smokiness of "No Pain", Orgone continue to remain in their own universe. If your collection doesn't boast this, now is the time.

Soul On Top (feat Louis Baker) (3:34)
Diegos Theme (edit) (3:26)
Review: Fresh from teasing fans with his highly limited run of mixtape CDs, UK beat-muncher Boca 45 releases an equally limited 45 with one brand new original and a stone cold classic from his 2006 LP Vertigo Sounds. "Soul On Top" sees him tap into the sleazy smoky soul sound with New Zealand singer Louis Baker, all horns, bass and golden vocals. "Diego's Theme", meanwhile, is one of his hallmark early releases; a sweaty, dramatic Latin firecracker it hasn't dated one bit in nine years. And probably never will.

Beautiful Forest (4:19)
Neon Night Riders (2:48)
Port Town (3:16)
Review: Aside from reissuing a whole heap of glorious boogie material from the 1980'sm People's Potential Unlimited also have their own distribution roster, and Cosmic Chronic is right up there waving the flag for the US stable. To kick-start 2016, we have a four-tracker from newcomer Arcade Odyssey, and as you'd expect, they're every but as funky and lo-fi as those instrumentals from back in the day. "Spring Yard Zone" kicks off with massive electro baseline, tropical melodies, and a hazy vibe, while "Beautiful Forest" breaks the beat down and goes Eastern with its synths. Flip the plate and you'll be confronted by the huge, stabbing bassline and fast beats of the utterly gnarly "Neon Night Riders" - easily the gem of the lot - and wound down thanks to the gentler, more tame waters of "Port Town". Sick.

You're Starting Too Fast (3:41)
You Can't Even Walk In The Park (2:33)
Review: Johny Pate's output dates back to 1958, and that in itself is something to marvel at. The Chicago jazz bassist is a veteran, and the man has worked with some of the best and greatest, and he's had key appearances on legendary jazz labels such as King Records, MGM, and Parlophone. The original to "You're Starting Too Fast" was out in 1970 on the Outrageous LP, and it has without a doubt stood the test of time; an energetic, riff-heavy funk monster with screeching organs and a bumpy groove, we simply love it. On the B-side, "You Can't Even Walk In The Park" is dirtier, a little slower, and moody, but my word are those trumpets glorious. Killer.

The Meters - "Hand Clapping Song" (Professor Shorthair remix) (3:40)
Ernie K Doe - "Here Come The Girls" (Professor Shorthair remix) (3:37)
Review: New Orleans edit collective Supajock tap deep into the source with two outright classics, break-blazed for the modern age. The cleverly named Professor Shorthair takes the reins for this 45": The Meters' sing-along happy-clapper "Hand Clapping Song" gets broken down over a sturdy, almost militant snare-based swing while Ernie K Doe's "Here Come The Girls" gets its bombast reduced to create a more subtle soul sensation. Instant party pacifiers.

Review: In case you've been living under a very thick layer of concrete for the past ten years, The Heliocentrics are a collective run by Malcolm Catto who explore everything form funk, to hip-hop and jazz, held together by their mutual - and spiritual - admiration for powers of Sun Ra, and the legacy that he's left behind. No, we won't tell you who Sun Ra is, you should know. Their new LP From The Deep comes on Now-Again, their usual home, and an offshoot of the mighty Stones Throw. With twelve tracks for you to get your head around, there's plenty in here for everyone, and the string jazzy element that carries the album forwards is only the backbone of the music. The rest, our friends, is pure experimentation of every sort, and from electronica to exotica and hip-hop, it's a true journey into outer space. God Ra would be proud.

Review: A long lost cosmic jazz funk document from Zagreb's underground funk scene. Spektar's only official album was a self-titled largely vocal-led affair in 74, but behind the scenes the band was jamming and creating fusions that were recorded but never released. Until now... From the organ-led jazz fire of "Lisinski III" to the brushed drum shuffle and sleazy bass of "Subiceva IV" to the classic Hammond-smashing opening salvo, it's crazy that it's taken 40 years for this album to see the light of day... Let's make up for lost time.

Review: Man of many talents Jan "JJ Whitefield" Weissenfeldt established Karl Hector & The Malcouns back in 2008, incorporating members of previous projects Poets of Rhythm and Syrup. Unlike those projects, which paid tribute to funk and disco respectively, The Malcouns effortlessly blend elements of Afrobeat, highlife, psychedelia and, most intriguingly, krautrock. This third album picks up where its' predecessors left off, delivering a range of tracks that blend African vocals and instrumentation with the loose, low-slung experimentalism of krautrock, and the distinctive grunt of vintage funk. It's a formula that guarantees success time and again, with highlights including the Fela-on-a-trip wonkiness of "Shangold", and the hazy tropical bliss of "Transition X".
