Review: The new Spacetalk label gets off to a flying start thanks to this compilation by French house shotter, Jeremy Underground. We know him, and you surely know him, though his My Love Is Underground label, an imprint that has produced some of the best deep house in the last five years. He's not in house mode today, though, and instead the DJ shows us his soul roots. Ron Rinaldi's opener "Mexican Summer" is a real peach of a song, then there's some Brazilian disco-funk through Leila Pinheiro's "Tudo Em Cima", and the supremely deep and sensual "Superstar" by NCCU. Other favourites include Maureen Bailey's bittersweet anthem "Takin' My Time With You", and June Evans' "Hardly Need To Say", a tune that we could just leave on repeat. A highly recommended comp!

Review: They've taken us on some of the most transcendental mix-trips of recent years - from sunrise to sunset via cosmic forest and magic circles by way of their endless global dancefloor - assault no young act is digging as deep as Psychemagik. Or as a spiritually. Yet another case in point: Rituals. By far the duo's most extensive, majestically curated and organized trip to date. 40 tracks exploring the last 60 years of studio creations and vibe explorations, from the progressive synth odyssey of Vermoessen & Delo to the steel drum electro boogie of Gurvitz by way of the dense rainbow textures of Amini and cosmic synth struts of Le P'tite Fred, you get the feeling that Rituals is the mix experience Psychemagik have been working towards their whole career. Happy travels...

Review: It would be fair to say that Studio K7 has pulled off something of a coup in getting Kenny Dixon Jr. to agree to compile and mix the latest installment in the long-running DJ Kicks series. It is, somewhat remarkably, the legendary Detroiter's first commercially available mix set. This triple-vinyl edition features a whopping 19 cuts - all in unmixed form - from the 30 track mix. Musically, it's a blazed, jazzy, soulful and groovy as you'd expect, and contains a mixture of downtempo beats, nu-jazz and hazy house cuts from the likes of Flying Lotus, Dopehead, Peter Digital Orchestra, Nightmares On Wax, Soulful Session and Lady Alma.

Review: 2016 sees Coyote arrive at a decade of posing the question Is It Balearic? Replicating the compilation shaped celebrations surrounding their fifth anniversary, the landmark is noted with this fine 2CD collection. The compiling skills of Balearic chieftain Max Essa are called on for the first disc selections, with Coyote taking care of business on the second for a fine horizontally-minded celebration of all things Balearic encompassing 22 tracks. Tempos nudge back and forth, different vibes coming to the fore along the way as a dash of steel drum is replaced by forthright synth glistens and upright basslines. Legends mingle alongside future heroes, Foolish Felix and Baldelli impressing as much as Last Waltz and Clandestino. As the end nears, up pops Prins Thomas's classic Diskomiks of Downtown Party Network. Here's to another ten years Is it Balearic?

Review: Lazare Hoche doesn't release that much music, but what he does put out is invariably excellent. Following a smattering of singles and an acclaimed collaborative album alongside Malin Genie - 2013's I Don't Sync So Volume II - he's decided to put together a compilation featuring his own productions and those by music industry mates. Access, then, is a lesson in warm and luscious deep house, with significant contributions coming from Luke Solomon (donning the Jean Caffeine guise on the dreamy and rolling "Jean Afterthought"), DJ Gregory's Point G project (the ultra-deep pulse of "La Lampe Du Vizir Adjane"), and pals Skymaster and Mandal. Hoche's own contributions rank amongst the compilation's highlights, with the title track delivering a pitch-perfect lesson in the seductive powers of dreamy, dust-encrusted deep house.

Review: Larry Levan's influence on the development of dance music in New York during the 1980s cannot be overstated. That much is clear from Genius Of Time, a two-disc collection of the Paradise Garage resident's finest remixes. Heavy on dub delays, spaced-out synthesizers and rolling grooves, it gathers together a swathe of stone-cold classics - killer reworks of Gwen Guthrie, Man Friday, Peech Boys, Loose Joints and Jimmy Ross - with lesser-known, but no less vital, tweaks of cuts from Dee Dee Bridgewater, Esther Williams, Smokey Robinson and Tramaine. While dedicated fans will have many of these already, it serves as the perfect introduction to Levan's distinctive and hugely influential style.

Review: With the possible exception of The Reflex, no other producer can match the multi-track re-edits and remixes delivered by house maestro and long-time disco digger Dave 'Joey Negro' Lee. Having laid down a marker with 2013's Remixed With Love, the veteran producer has decided to emphasize his credentials with this similarly superb follow-up. Over the course of two action-packed discs, Lee skillfully re-arranges 20 disco and boogie favourites, using the inherent swing, funk and energy of his source material to create superb, dancefloor-friendly tweaks. Amongst the well-known cuts - think "Pull Up To The Bumper", "Keep The Fire Burning" and "Brothers Gonna Work It Out" - you'll also find sublimely soulful rearrangements of overlooked cuts from Nicolette Larson, Cheryl Lynn and Norman Connors.

Review: Given the upsurge in interest in Mood II Swing's distinctively tough take on 1990s US garage, it was probably only a matter of time before someone put together a proper career retrospective. Fittingly, it is re-born '90s New York house imprint Strictly Rhythm that does the honours. The three-disc, originals-and-remixes format is similar in style and tone to Defected's House Masters series, and the results are similarly enjoyable. What shines through most is the quality of John Ciafone and Lem Springsteen's grooves, which while rooted in the organ-heavy shuffle of US garage were often notably tougher and darker. While there is some repetition (vocal and dub versions of some tracks are included on different discs), there's no denying the quality of the material.

Ain't No Need (live - version 2)
Review: The Sound Signature label continues its' round-up of tracks they've not quite managed to get out on wax to date, supposedly due to endless delays at pressing plants. This second volume in the series is, if anything, even stronger than its' predecessor. Certainly the line-up of artists is ridiculously strong, with Tony Allen, Andrew Ashong, Kai Alice, Marcellus Pittman and, of course, boss man Theo Parrish, all contributing. Musically, it's a deep, soulful, loose, jazzy and breezy affair that takes in folksy neo-soul, intergalactic broken beats, Rhodes-laden instrumental hip-hop, throbbing, left-of-centre deep house, and sumptuous, string-laden jazz-funk. It's the kind of set that will bring a little sunshine into your life, regardless of the darkness happening in the World around us.

Something About Detroit (2nd mix)
Review: According to Theo Parrish, this surprise CD compilation - the first of two, apparently - was inspired by his frustration at delays at vinyl pressing plants. What we get is a nine-track selection of previously unreleased cuts from a wide variety of label artists, including Amp Fiddler, Kyle Hall, Alton Miller, Hanna and, of course, Parrish himself. Unhelpfully there's no indication of who made which track, but in some ways it doesn't matter. Touching on all of the label's musical inspirations, the nine tracks variously touch on breezy nu-jazz, moody ambience, spacey deep house futurism, jazz-funk flecked broken beat, and sludgy, mind-altering beatdown. Predictably, the standard is impressively high throughout.

Review: Since its' initial release back in 2000, Theo Parrish's Methods Of Movement mix has attained cult status. 16 years on, the set has lost none of its' potency, or for that matter its' ability to entertain. An exercise in classic dancefloor eclecticism, it offers a sprint through dusty disco, soul, funk, Afrobeat, boogie, Detroit techno and deep house. It's effectively the kind of set you'd expect Parrish to play at a house party, laying down favourites from Tullio De Piscopo (the Balearic classic "Stop Bajon (Primavera)", Luther Vandross, Tony Allen, Incognito, First Choice and pal Kenny Dixon Jr. Packed full of energy, and shot through with soul, Methods Of Movement is Theo Parrish at his mercurial best.

Review: Theo Parrish doesn't serve up many mix CDs these days, so it's good that he's making a swathe of classic recordings available again. Live In Detroit was initially recorded and released back in 1999, and sees the Motor City house legend joining the dots between the cosmic deep house and raging acid tracks of Larry Heard, the intergalactic jazz-funk of Herbie Hancock, the percussive disco onslaught of the Erotic Drum Band (the drum-heavy madness of "Jerky Rhythm"), and a sprinkling of '80s boogie favourites. The great man also reaches for a number of his own impeccable productions, and keeps things moving with the skill of a true master.

Review: For their latest trawl through the back catalogues of legendary labels Epic, Arista, Philadelphia International and RCA Victor, SonyBMG has handed over the reins to noted re-editor and crate-digger DJ Reverend P. He duly gathers together three discs of killer material, alternating between the well-loved - Tom Browne's "Funkin' For Jamaica", The Jones Girls' "Nights Over Egypt", and George Duke's "Brazilian Love Affair", for starters - and the slightly lesser-known. The latter category contains some excellent alternative mixes, including the original, killer 12" version of Herbie Hancock's "Stars In Your Eyes", a rare Tom Moulton remix of "Anyway You Wanna" by Peoples Choice, and a smattering of the good Reverend's own re-edits.

Review: Thanks to his reputation as a knowledgeable house selector with immaculate mixing skills, hopes are high for Gerd Janson's contribution to Fabric's long-running mix series. As predicted, it's superb. After opening with Luke Abbot's deliciously steamy, marimba-heavy rework of Todd Terje sunset classic "Snooze 4 Love", the Running Back chief gradually ups the tempo and intensity, along the way finding time for the melodious breeziness of John Talabot, the stripped-back retro-futurism of Shan, a dash of big room business from Joy Orbison and Boddika, and a swathe of lesser-known house gems from the likes of Joe Clausell and Scott Grooves. He also squeezes in Prins Thomas's loose and summery rework of Caribou's "Sun", which closes the mix perfectly.

Review: As celebrations of Miami's legendary TK Disco label go, this is rather special. The first disc sees notable New York DJ/producer Danny Krivit deliver a smooth, entertaining mix of label favourites, moving from the laidback, soulful shuffle of Peter Brown's for your love, to the upbeat, solo-heavy disco stomp of Wild Honey's "At The Top Of The Stairs", via killer cuts from the likes of Quartz, Ralph McDonald and Fern Kinney. The real heat, though, is on disc two, which gathers together 10 unmixed, full-length Krivit edits of superb TK cuts from Hokis Pokis, Jo Bisso, Jimmy McGriff and Betty Wright.

Review: During the 1990s, few British house producers matched the productivity of Pete Heller and Terry Farley. Under a variety of pseudonyms, the Junior Boys Own duo beat America's finest house producers at their own game. It's somewhat fitting, then, that Defected has decided to honour them with a three-disc House Masters collection that draws together their finest productions and remixes over three action-packed discs. All of the duo's finest moments are present - think remixes of New Order, Junior Vasquez, U2 and Funky Green Dogs, plus a disc worth of their own stomping productions under the Fire Island and Roach Motel aliases - alongside a smattering of overlooked and lesser-known gems.

Review: Throughout the summer, International Feel boss Mark Barrott spent his Thursday evenings entertaining poolside punters at Ibiza's Hostal La Torre. Here, he teams up with fellow Balearic DJ Pete Gooding to gather together 15 tracks inspired by these weekly "sunset sessions". Predictably, it's a fine collection, with the experienced duo variously touching on classic, World Music-inspired chill-out fare (Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Amed Fakroun, Finis Africae), dreamy '90s ambient (Spooky's spine-tingling "Orange Coloured Liquid"), killer contemporary cuts (Domenique Dumont's brilliant "Comme Ca", Cantoma's shuffling "Tabarin"), and overlooked gems (Hatchback's wondrous "White Diamond" and Harvey's lesser-known "Ibiza Sleep" remix of Planet Funk's "Inside All The People").

Jamie XX vs DJ Koze - "Come We Go"
Gold Panda - "Black Voices"
Acid pauli - "Nana"
Roman Fugel - "9 Years"
Review: The first compilation on Koze's Pampa label is a lovingly curated affair. It starts with the left field house of Herbert's take on Lianne La Havas and Ada's r&b-infused "You & Me", as well as DJ Koze's own hymnal take on Roman Flugel's "9 Years". Other Pampa regulars like Axel Boman are well represented and he provides the ultra-mellow "In The Dust of This Planet". Equally though, Koze also provides a platform for newcomers to the fold. There's the utterly bizarre, glitch-hop of Nasrawi and Funskstorung's contributions, and at the other end of the spectrum, wide-eyed deep house from Mount Kimbie and Jamie xx & Kosi Kos' pumping indie-dance "Come We Go".

Review: Despite his well-earned reputation as one of techno's most prolific producers, this contribution to the long-running Fabric series is Alan Fitzpatrick's first mix CD. Happily, it finds the Drumcode regular in fine form, showcasing his wide-ranging approach to late night techno. After beginning with some clandestine ambience and dark downtempo textures, Fitzpatrick proceeds to join the dots between the throbbing peak-time thump of Mike Denhert, the swirling deepness of Bjarki, the spine-tingling rave revivalism of Markus Suckut, and the glassy-eyed Detroit nostalgia of Operator. He wisely includes a clutch of his own productions, too, including the decidedly dystopian "End Theme".
