Review: Africa's Blood was the first record Lee "Scratch" Perry released under his own name way back in 1971. That said, most of the tracks have been produced with his go to band The Upsetters, and while their dub vibes are all present and correct, there is also a looming influence of American r&b sounds throughout the record. Perry's signature reggae sounds good as ever and means the record is a fine window into the cross-genre fusions that were going on in Jamaica at the time. This is a mega limited record presser's don orange wax which makes it all the more vital.

I Saw The Light (3:04)
Track 2 (3:04)
Review: Inokasira Rangers aka Park Rangers laid down this curious festive reggae rhythm in 2019. It was written by American musician and song writer Todd Rundgren who could do everything from pop to soul to metal. Here his tune 'I Saw The Light' gets flipped into a real curio with harmonica leads, rolling drums that are tropical and exotic and a good time vibe that is fun and playful. 'Track 2' sounds like a DIY dub with naive chords and natty melodies that are good for the soul.

Review: Music On Vinyl continues to serve up audiophile-friendly editions of classic reggae albums. Their latest offering is a translucent green vinyl version of sometime Wailers member Peter Tosh's 1983 full length Mama Africa. It remains one of Tosh's most complete sets, recorded and produced in cahoots with an all-star cast of musical collaborators including Sly Dunbar, Robbie Shakespeare, vocal group the Tamlins and soul legend Betty Wright. As you'd expect given the money that was spent on its' recording, it sees Tosh and company add big studio polish and 1980s rock and pop tropes to the singer's usual roots reggae riddims. While there are some curious moments - most notably reggae take on Chuck Berry's rock and roll classic 'Johnny B Goode' - for the most part it's a highly entertaining affair.

Review: Mikey Dread started out as an engineer with the Jamaica Broadcasting Corporation, and it was during that time that some of the most acclaimed reggae was being recorded. He was enthused and inspired by what he heard so he managed to talk his bosses into giving him his own radio show called Dread At The Controls and the rest is history. Here you can listen to plenty of his finest tunes complete with the radio announcements and shout outs before most tracks. It's a thoroughly futuristic dub record even now and is one of the finest of its era with many different micro-styles and scenes found within its blissed out riddims.

Review: Doctor Bird's latest deep dive into 1970s Jamaican reggae focuses on the releases of Randy's Records, a Kingston-based imprint whose roots hits were later issued in the UK by Trojan Records. The first disc concentrates on the label's leading star of the time, Trevor Shaw AKA Billy London, offering an expanded edition of his superb 1972 debut album Bridge Over Troubled Water. It comes on disc one by various singles and B-sides performed by the effortlessly soulful singer, as well as a suite of tracks from other Randy's artists based on the 'A Little Love' riddim. Also essential is the second disc, which gathers together some of the finest Randy's-related singles released by Trojan in the UK, including sides from Augustus Pablo, Gregory Isaacs, Mac Romeo and the Heptones.

Review: It's back to 1989 for this classic bit of Nigerian ecological soul. Filled with six dubby manifestos to the beauty and importance of the environment and nature around us, Green Leaves has sublime vocals by the late, great, Guatemala born, Nigeria based Sheila Majekodunmi over an electric dub sound with old school synth sounds and nice rolling rhythms. This marks her only album as she sadly died in her forties. It's a great mastering job by Superfly that makes this an essential one for any time of year, but particularly as the weather starts to warm up.
