Truth vs Stylust Beats - "Chicks & Drugs"
Truth - "Empire"
Review: Following their killer "Devils Hands" on Tempa at the start of the summer, New Zealand crew Truth get down and dirty with the London mega-label once again. "Chicks & Drugs", a hook up with San Francisco-based bass monkey Stylust Beats, is a low-swung sleaze-fest with added ghetto attitude and no end of sub. "Empire" is more akin to what the trio's past repertoire; all spacious, tripped out and hypnotic, it's peppered with naked elements, each one designed to lock your attention and take you far, far away. They say the truth hurts. Turn up the volume and find out for yourself!

Uuha
Witch Doctor
Review: Following the beautiful "Zaikedelic" and "Preaching" on Box Clever, Finnish cosmic bandit L A S cooks up two more unique brews; "Uuha" ignites with warm horn insistency while spell-binding pads wash over the palpitating heart beat bass and swampy beats. "Witch Doctor" takes us to the dreamiest destination possible. The beats are so spacious and confidently placed; they stumble over each other with a sense of organised chaos. Staccato flutes sneeze with ease, falling over the unique arrangement with grace. Dubstep doesn't get much more distinctive than this.

Rag & Bone
7 Breaths (Distance remix)
Review: Whether it's on Chestplate or Deep Medi Musik, new transmissions from the man Tunnidge are always something a bit special and Rag & Bone is no different! Arriving on the former, "Rag & Bone" is hardly the most complex of productions, just the most gnarled of heaving bass line patterns, some superbly hollow sounding drums and intricate little production edits and you've probably heard it rip up the dancehall. On the flip Chestplate owner Distance picks out a Tunnidge gem of some vintage for remix purposes; in original form the 2010 track "7 Breaths" is what's described as a "certified banger" and Distance's refix has been a much sought dubplate that's now mercifully available for wider consumption.

From My Laptop
Lets Roll
Runnings
Review: One of two sample snapshots from the twisted mind of Si Begg, Permission To Explode is another mind-boggling exercise in fractured funk and fury. "From My Laptop" comes with a bulbous, Oizo-like techno groove, "Let's Roll" subverts the hair-raising, mosh-inducing dubstep formula with wit and weirdness while "Runnings" shows the glitch boys how things should be done. Permission to explode? Permission granted.

Out Of Sight
The Mother Ship Has Landed
Buffer State
Review: The second sampler from Si Begg's fifth long player, each of three tracks showcases the very best of Si's unique skillish soundset. "Out Of Sight" is a robust techno jam littered with stuttering glitches and mesmerising fills. "The Mothership Has Landed" is furious joyride with the ghost of jungle future sitting confidently at the wheel. "Buffer State" completes the set with a sludgy slo-mo brew of stuttering guttural bass groans and glitch beats so slick they'd make Bassnectar blush. Explosive

Review: I Am Legion finally drop a fully loaded LP on us courtesy of the young Division Recordings - an imprint reserved primarily for pouncing, snare-heavy dubstep and grime excursions. Sixteen tracks of bass delight, all of them choc-a-bloc with sci-fi rolling synths and devious lyrics, starting from the "Intro", which pretty much sets the scene perfectly for what's about to come. "Farrda" introduces the grime to the table and tracks like "Upper Ratio" and "Blue Shift" break it all down once more into a seductive infusion of urban beats and ominous sounds. BIG TINGS.
