Love In The Jungle (5:49)
The Crawlers (5:56)
Ridge Racer Revolution (6:26)
No Fxxxing Soul (5:33)
Review: The brilliantly dark world of breakbeats and stripped back techno that Illian Tape call their own gets that bit richer with this new EP from Pessimist. It kicks off with some rugged jungle rides that are coloured by bird calls, wood block hits and booming bass before 'The Crawlers' is a flurry of snares and hi hats that tie your mind and body in knots. The excellent 'Ridge Racer Revolution' is a hardcore track that never lets up, with flailing hits and hundred mile and hour breaks all demanding you dance. The closer is a dystopian cut of unresolved loops ad frazzled bass that lurches back and forth and traps you right where it wants you. Thrilling stuff.

Can't Punish Me (6:41)
Can't Punish Me (Dubplate mix) (5:41)
Review: Let's dance! One of Dom & Roland's most brazenly funky tracks turns 20 this year and he's given it a cheeky limited press 1-up. With its crucial sample craft, oceanic waves of breakbeats and 1.21 gigawatt bass shreds, "Can't Punish Me" is still an absolute weapon two decades later. As is the previously unreleased dubplate version that gives the track a whole new suit of drum armour and much more dramatic and fleeting use of the sample. What do you live for?

Falls To You VIP (6:05)
End Of Meaning (5:16)
Review: Northern Ireland's Dominick Martin, or Calibre, to the drum & bass buying public, has a reputation for bringing new angles on this well-worn sound and these two new sides of vinyl are no exceptions. The VIP version of Falls To You sees his crisp, irresistible beats doing their magic but the piano, reflective vocal and minimal electronic flourishes lend this roller a spooky, eerie quality. The flip track End of Meaning has a slightly warmer, more optimistic vibe but is still reflective, the vocals being sent through echoey dub effects for maximum atmospherics. Definitely ploughing his own furrow, as ever, Calibre demonstrates here why those in the know will always check what he's up to.

Lovely (5:40)
Blue Wine (5:16)
Just Vibe With It (5:20)
You Know How To (5:43)
Review: There's no details on the identity about the "mystery artist" behind this brilliant EP on Fokuz Recordings, which may have something to do with the cheeky - but utterly brilliant - drum and bass rework of a Phylis Hyman disco classic nestling at the end of side two ("You Know How To"). While that has "future festival anthem" written all over it, there's plenty to set the pulse racing elsewhere on the EP, not least the string-laden poignance of liquid opener "Lovely" and the tougher, wobble bass-propelled goodness that is "Blue Wine". The EP's other cut, a scratch-happy fusion of modern R&B and classic D&B, is also rather good.

White Horses (5:18)
Living For (5:44)
Review: Calibre aka Dominick Martin pairs up with DRS, each taking one side of this 12" and each more than holding their own. Martin continues his current obsession with the pure sound of the real piano, a powerful antidote to the more synthetic sounds we're more used to hearing in the genre. Add a supreme male vocal in plaintive mood,. declaring "I've been looking for love in all the wrong places" and you've got something that really stand out of the crowd. Living For by DRS is more of straight anthem, with reggae influences and a hip-hop vocal giving it a proper lighters-in-the-air atmosphere, its conscious lyrics very much echoing the mood of Britain in 2020. Two very different tracks, for sure, but this package is strong in its diversity.

Supa Ape - "Leviathan" (5:07)
Junglord - "Pabst Blue Ribbon" (5:14)
Review: UK Jungle Records continues to set a fine standard with its third EP. It's a various artist affair that kicks off with Simply Dread's old school roller, complete with summery flute lines and old school vocals that bring good time vibes. Omen Breaks then grabs you by the synapses and runs with you down a darkened rabbit hole on "Don Teifion" and Supa Ape brings more celestial and soulful vibes on his widescreen gem "Leviathan". Junglord closes down with "Pabst Blue Ribbon", which is hard hitting and intense.

The Touch (3:51)
Review: Russian donny deepsmiths Bop and Subwave team up for the first post-Med School (RIP) signing to Hospital and it's a bit of a special one. A full showcase of styles, it gives us much more than you'd ever expect from either individual. "Teardrops" is a glistening oceanic steppy, all spiralling, cosmic and sensual in all the right places, "Space Warp" is the dancefloor bomb of the package with its swooping droning bassline, "Don't Wake Me Up" takes us into shoegazing, head-tickling indie dance territory while "The Touch" closes on a sexy UKG tip that none of us would expect from the duo. What an impressive debut collaborative EP statement, we can't wait to hear what's next.

Nine Strings (4:47)
Eyes (4:28)
Review: Cor blimey governor, this'll put lead in your pencil. Radio 1 broadcaster and all-round badman Rene LaVice teams up with early 2000s donny hitmakers Future Cut for this incredible EP on Metalheadz. "Nine Strings" is pure breakbeat venom. Thunderous bass, grizzly funk and severe amounts of evil in all the right spaces and places, this is real grown up stuff right here. "Eyes" on the B carries just as much weight and horsepower but comes with just a smidgeon of deep dream soul.

Review: Hitting a remarkable 400 releases in their catalogue, the mighty Hospital Records enlist a whole spectrum of high grade link-ups to celebrate. First up is the bossman London Elektricity and Hozzy heavyweight S.P.Y on the prowling, purring 'Find Another Fool'. They're joined by Subwave, Bop and Degs on the cosmic soul vibe 'The Shade' before Makoto and Urbandawn get all hairy and ravey on the walloping Conrad-featured 'Magic Eyes'. Rounding up the EP comes the jazzy vocal yearns of 'Broken Bones' from Mitekiss and Whiney, Fred V and Loggy on a planet-bounding bruise-up with 'You Keep Me High' before Keeno and Polaris close the EP with skin-rippling operatic anthemia. Here's to another 400.

Nymfo & Martyn - "What's Happening?" (5:09)
No Choice (4:55)
Review: Oh gosh. Last spotted on the mothership label in 2015 on Mikal's "Where They At" EP, Danger Dutchman Nymfo returns to Metalheadz with his first full EP for the label. It's every bit as heavy and badass as you'd hope it to be. "Sting Blade" rolls out with a skinny-fit break and a bassline so flabby and bulbous it folds over the edges. It's backed by two more monoliths; "What's Happening" sees fellow Dutchy Martyn join the action with just a touch of classic Blue Note style jazziness. Finally, "No Choice" settles the matter on some 23rd century twisted Optical style funk. Easily one of Nymfo's finest moments so far (which is saying something).

Reflect (instrumental) (6:19)
Review: With a collaborative history dating back to 2005, few producer/vocalist combos in drum and bass hit the spot as consistently as Seba and Robert Manos. Both enhancing what each other bring to the track, Seba never compromises on the emotional range and weight of his production yet always leaves more than enough space for the vocal house legend. 'Reflect' is a perfect example as Manos weaves between the fluctuating bassline and sudden breakbeat flurries creating a perfect balance of pure space and total soul. Delivered on red vinyl and complete with an instrumental, this Secret Operation won't be secret for too long.

For the 12th instalment of their Classic Symptoms series they dive deep into the vaults to unearth four gems from the 2006 to 2009 era. Nu:Tone gets the appointment underway with the retells roller that is 'Missing Link' before things get super sweet with the liquid flow and soul drenched vocals of 'Gold Rush' feat Brookes Brothers by Danny Byrd. Logistics goes for a drilling old school beat with classic samples and heady vibes and closing things out is Commix, whose stripped back and shadowy stepper 'Bear Music' sounds as crucial now as it ever did.

Review: Those interested in the roots of UK bass music have been well-served of late, with a number of books and compilations focusing on the first wave of British dance music in the late 80s and early 90s. Soul Jazz's latest compilation is a superb addition to this growing list. It showcases music made in the post-bleep and early breakbeat hardcore period, where basslines got bigger, drum breaks faster, and ragga influences started to come to the fore. The selections are on-point throughout from the dub-wise rave rush of Babylon Timewarp's "Durban Poison" and the bleep-and-breaks-meets-proto-jungle shuffle of DJ Dubplate's "Tings A Go On", to the rave-rap goodness of The Freaky's "Time & Age" and the heavily edited darkcore/early jungle insanity that is Krome & Time's terrific "Ganja Man". In a word: essential.

His first drum & bass LP-length exploration, "Liquid Colours" nods back to the D&B's most virulent strains of the mid 90s. Think Good Looking, Moving Shadow, Ascendant Groove, the dreamy, cosmic sheen and loose, splashy drums are the perfect playground for CFCF's jazzy, contemplative and musical signature he's had since his debut album "Continent". Highlights include the twinkling Sao Paulo-destined samba of "Oxygen Lounge", the PFM-style star-gazing odyssey of "Closed Space" and the pure Creative Source flavours of "Aquascape". Dive deep.

Released a few months before Kemistry's tragic death in a freak road accident, it remains a timeless snapshot of drum & bass during the sound's formative first decade. Review: Following its CD and digital download release last autumn, London Elektricity's fine new album - Tony Colman's eighth studio set - finally gets a vinyl release. For the uninitiated, "Building Better Worlds" builds (sorry) on the "big band" concept Colman unveiled at Hospitality In The Park in 2017, offering soaring, orchestrated tracks that take drum & bass to musically expansive new heights. There's barely a drum machine or sample in sight, while what electronic sounds that have been included are used sparingly. The results are undeniably impressive, with the assembled collective's warm and soulful tracks providing enjoyable listening throughout. It might raise a few eyebrows amongst jungle purists, but ignore the haters: this is a very fine album indeed.

Here they continue that trend via RTRN II FABRIC, their first contribution to the legendary London club's popular DJ mix series.
