Groove With It
Soldier
Review: What can we say about Break that hasn't already been said? This man is D&B mythology - every producer name checks, every DJ represents, every soldier on the dancefloor knows that Break equals neck-snapping quality of the highest order. Both tunes on this release are, it goes without saying, superb, but both come from different dark places. "Groove With it" is the stepper you want, "Soldier" is the heavy, bottomed-out, snare-flailing danger zone you need. Drum and bass for the connoisseur who still likes to get messed up when it suits. Beautiful.

2nd Page (feat Steo)
NOD
Time Traveller (feat Steo)
Review: Longstanding D&B figurehead Beta 2 steps up for duty on Metalheadz for the first time in many years with 2nd Page, a 12" that brandishes three blistering original productions. Both the dreamy roller "2nd Page" and the beautiful palpitating "Time Traveller" feature Steo, a man who - thanks to his work with AI - is swiftly becoming one of the genre's most distinctive and in-demand vocalists right now. Wedged inbetween is"NOD", which offers a much more upfront and direct testament of Beta 2's undoubted production class. More please Metalheadz!

Zootie
Zootie (Yavas mix)
Review: Rezzett may not be the most high profile name amongst the swelling discography of The Trilogy Tapes, but last year's self-titled 12? for Will Bankhead's label was arguably one of the imprint's highlights to date. The three tracks were a skewed combination of scratchy rhythms and frazzled melodies that took the description "lo-fi" to new places. It's up against some stiff competition but Zootie might be the finest looking TTT so far with numerous hand screen printed stamps adorning both the outer and inner sleeves. It's matched musically too as both "Zootie" and the accompanying "Yavas mix" applies Rezzett's blasted sonics and applies them to some wondrous ambient chords with the former throwing in some speaker blowing hardcore rhythms too.

Paranoia
Say What You Want (feat Amanda Seal)
Review: Two stunning slabs of sub gold from Luton trio DBR UK. "Paranoia" lives up to its name; dark, creepy and ominous, the subs ooze menace as slippery lead lines play games like random noises echoing upside your head when you're walking through a dodge area late at night. For many, though, this release is all about the startling star-gazing soul of the B-side "Say What You Want". The beats skip, the synths swoon and the bass has heaps of spacious to stutter and gurgle as Amanda Seal lays down some sensuous vocal magic. As DBR continue to gather momentum, this will be seen as a career-shaping release. Guaranteed!

Sex Sells
Nordwand
Review: Sexy time! It's been a while since Neosignal champs Phace & Misanthrop donned their D&B hats together, but they've made up for lost time with this killer double 12". "Sex Sells" is a vaguely satirical slammer with a gritty bassline and beats that pummel the bedposts harder than an all night romp. "Nordwand", meanwhile, takes us to colder pastures (with the help of an inflatable mattress according to one recent interview) as we're rifled up the scale from sinewy linear arpeggios to ice cannon bass blasts that tear your face off. Both absolutely kill it.

Rotary Motion (Calibre alternate remix)
Serendipity (LSB remix)
Review: Originally released in 2012 (back when Technimatic were still Technicolour & Komatic) their crucial collab with LSB has been one of the many ace rewinds we've enjoyed this year since Artificial Intelligence resurrected Integral after two years silence. Calibre's remix has been especially dominant in summer selections, and here he's provided an alternative remix where the slim-line beats have been eschewed in favour of a heavier, rustier amen arrangement. Flip for LSB's superb update of "Serendipity". Touching, subtle and overwhelmingly spacious, it's a serious moment of liquid beauty.

Objection VIP
Cern & Dabs - "Alter Ego"
Cern & Dabs - "Hell Rose" (Villem & McLeod remix)
Review: There are some serious players involved in Dabs' latest EP... Not only has Dabs gone to town on last year's massive "Objection" with a suitably heavy VIP but he's teamed up with New Zealander Cern for two killer pieces (one of which has been remixes by the ever-ready creators Villem and McLeod). First up is "Alter Ego", a guttural ugly-bump that scratches and scuffs with raw attitude and an array of bass textures and twisted drum switches on the fills. Finally "Hell Rose" (originally releases on the initial "Objection" EP last year) gets the deep space treatment from Villem and McLeod. With enough room between each percussive element to park an entire fleet of buses, the duo have created a dynamic that really allows the vocal to sweep you off your feet. We've always said Dabs' skills are constant. This is proof.

Manicured Reality (feat Lowqui)
Stardust (feat Bcee)
Heavy Metal
Guidance (feat Total Science)
Review: TWO albums in less than six months? S.P.Y has been smashing it this year! More importantly, they've been killer albums, too. Here Hospital has handpicked four of the second album's many highlights. And, as the title suggests, they document his love for the roots that he fell in love with at the beginning. A lot of ground is covered; from the glistening synth raindrops of the Bcee-collaborated "Stardust" to the darker, Terminator-style "Heavy Metal" via the rushy jungle skips and breezes of "Guidance", S.P.Y truly is a master of his craft and understands the purest dynamics of the genre consummately.

DLR & Mako - "Your Mind"
DLR - "10 Steps"
DLR - "Sence Of Wanting"
DLR & Mako - "Seek Knowledge" (feat Rider Shafique)
Review: DLR and Mako: Now here's a drum & bass super duo that genuinely need no introduction! Two 12"s brandishing four tracks, two collaborations, and two originals. Both players and label have excelled themselves right here, as you'll instantly hear when the startling jazzy keys flurry in from nowhere on "Your Mind". Dig deeper for the sharp, steppy riddim of DLR's "10 Steps" and ice-cold synth washes and rhythmic human element manipulation of "Sense Of Wanting". Finally we climax with "Seek Knowledge". Featuring a stark sermon from Rider Shafique, it's an abyss-like halfstepper that's galvanised with industrial strength production that allows every element to resonate deeply. Open up "Your Mind" today!

Empathy Reboot
Format Affection
Review: The third release of their high impact launch trio - named after their second podcast - this Pleasure District joint sees dBridge and Kid Drama embrace the uptempo flexibility of their work. "Empathy Reboot" is awash with lush dreamy piano flurries, strange otherworldly vocal textures and a sub that hammers a strong message with subtlety. "Format Affection" develops this further as they immerse themselves fully into deep D&B mode. Hissing hi-hats, icy pads and cool middy bass textures fuse to create a timeless track that transcends environments.

Palermo
Over Easy
Review: Script and Survival's SCAR project has been one of the most exciting things to happen in drum & bass this year. Drawing from all the best eras and thrusting them into the future with mind-bending production standards, every SCAR record is coded with the deepest, darkest D&B DNA. "Palermo" is straight up darkness... The bendy bass oozes over the stark kick/snare combo like treacle, relenting for a moment to allow tight, funky percussion to shine through. "Over Easy", meanwhile, is one of those tracks that offers something new on every listen; a deep roller, it's home to about 10 different basses that overlap and weave among each other, vying for your attention with trippy attention to detail. Massive.

D Bridge - "Module Eight"
D Bridge - "Void Response"
Kid Drama - "Kill Time"
Kid Drama - "Separation"
Review: The second of Pleasure District's inaugural three-piece salvo from dBridge and Kid Drama... While the first release showed the men at their more sedate and meditative, this one shows a darker side to the influential producers. Both taking up a side each, both players showcase their finest dynamics. "Module Eight" is as dramatic as it is naked. All tribal thunder, scratchy samples and paranoid groans and "Void Response" is a much more psychedelic affair with heavily textured synths smothering moody halfstep beats. Meanwhile in Kid Drama HQ "Kill Time" is a very light and airy steppy sensation while "Separation" is a caustic riddim piece that balances razor sharp beats and arresting minor chords.

Running Low (Fred V & Graffix remix)
Running Low (Todd Edwards remix)
Review: Monstrously massive D&B! Netsky returns with a brand new label deal. While Ultra and Sony are now taking care of the Belgian's business, his old homestead Hospital are still taking care of the vinyl duties. And they've smashed it right here; complementing the hands-in-the-air original are killer rubs from Wookie (UK funky style drums with a garage sensibility and lush keys on the breakdown), Fred V & Grafix (breezy D&B dreams and sumptuous synths) and Todd Edwards (classic TE style harmonic choppery.. Every bit as funky as you'd expect!)

Review: Flexout continue to showcase their vibe dexterity and ear for great new talent with the second instalment of their Logarithmic album series which pulls together contributions from Held, Shiver, Conscience and more. If you're looking for a succinct cross section of the various shades of drum and bass this is the 12" you need. Held brings the jazzy breezes on "5 Years" whilst the M Set and Deefa collaboration "All Consuming Fears" pairs up tripped out time signatures with clever raps. A perfect sample of what to expect if you choose to indulge in the full 24 track compilation.

Eveson & Halogenix - "Grey Dawn"
Eveson - "A Dystopian Romance"
Review: Eveson is back! Having a taken a break after his incredible debut album (to run a D&B night in The Alps by all accounts) he's casually re-inserted himself into the scene with the soul and grace we've always known him for. "Grey Dawn" is a widescreen narrative penned with Ivy Lab's Halogenix. Sporting a soft-focus soul vocal, spacious beats and a mournful reverse synth texture, it's an emotional moment of genuinely deep D&B. "Dystopian Romance", meanwhile, is a much brighter, breezier affair with skippy breakbeats and a series of rich searing Reeces oozing out beneath the dreamy synths. Both are a kindly reminder of Eveson's unique signature. Thankfully there's a lot more to come.
