Rush
Tntus
Review: The name Alden Tyrell will be more familiar to long term advocates of the Clone Empire rather than those who might have been introduced to the myriad of Dutch labels in recent times by EPs from Untold and Blawan. That's mostly because the Dutch legend hasn't exactly been active of late in the old releasing records game, preferring to slip out the odd remix or concentrate on mammoth tasks like remastering the back catalogue of Drexciya for Clone. Those not so familiar with Tyrell could do worse than change that by starting with the two heaving slabs of monolithic techno that make up this mammoth contribution to the Clone Basement Series! There's a touch of Fachwerk to the growling tunnel-like groove of "Rush" which is offset by the rising key stabs which no doubt helped influence the title, while the excellently named "Tntus" sounds like it would consume your every last sense in the perfect environment - a dark, cramped basement with little light and plenty of speaker racks.

Lied To Be Loved (feat dBridge)
Zero
Stay (feat dBridge)
Review: It was an important year for Jon Convex and after his spectacular collaborative album with his Instra:Mental brother, Boddika, he needed to continue delivering the goods. London's 3024 has been his closest imprint, having released a string of fantastic releases for the label. The title track features the debaucheries of D&B legend, dBridge, where the pair have conjured a monter track, filled with swarming slices of bass, shifty drums and smooth vocals. "Zero" places its thumping drums next to bleepy melodies and a seriously odd bass line - a certified booty shaker! "Stay" is a gentler hymn, aided once again by dBridge's mastery, where 4/4 beats meet with anthemic piano keys and ludicrously seductive bass tones.

Deflowered (Kassem Mosse/Mix Mup remix)
Lolita (Warehouse dub)
Review: This was the killer second twelve in Paul Woolford's Special Request project, dominated by yet another collaborative slice of excellence from Leipzig duo Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup. In discussing Special Request, the freshly invigorated and newly beard rocking Woolford has explained the project has been inspired by the current crop of those that go in on Rinse FM which brought up the producer's own nostalgic visions of original pirate material. Given their standing among the Rinse acolytes such as Ben UFO and Jackmaster, commissioning KM & MM to add their own slant to Special Request seemed like an all too inspired decision. It's one that manifestly pays off tenfold, with the duo's remix of "Deflowered" a heavily smudged out slalom through recycled rhythms that could only ever come from them. On the flip, Woolford drops a Dub version of "Lolita" that only serves to ramp up the menace of those heavily phased waves of hoover bass - as a side note it sounds strangely wonderful at 33rpm!

Techno
Birdhouse
DBPLT01
Review: It seems like you can't move at the moment for erstwhile drum & bass producers experimenting with techno forms, and on this release it's the turn of George Levings, better known to most as Commix, though arriving on Boddika's Nonplus label it isn't quite techno in the strict sense of the word. "Birdhouse" certainly displays some of the rolling rhythmic tendencies and atmospherics of his more familiar genre, but its 130bpm thump has as much in common with Blawan's brooding industrial clatter in tone than anything out of the Metalheadz handbook. The much more languid "DBPLT01" on the other hand lets itself open out slowly like an inky blackness spreading throughout clean water, creating a sinister and all encompassing murk which echoes Kassem Mosse's releases on the same label. In short, another genre smashing essential from Nonplus.

Tom Trago - "Lost In The Streets Of NYC" (Actress version)
Terrence Dixon - "Rush Hour" (Convextion unreleased version)
Review: Amsterdam hub Rush Hour switch their attentions back to their fledgling sub label Vault Series for a second release which features the timeless Actress remix of Tom Trago along with an unreleased Terrence Dixon remix from the elusive Texan techno producer Convextion. The self styled "cheeky series" launched in consummate fashion late last year with an unreleased track from the still mysterious Duster Valentine backed by the timely repressing of Aardvarck's classic and instantly recognisable party jam "(Just Washed) That Pig". That template is followed to a tee on the forthcoming installment, due out between late April and early May on vinyl and digital formats. The Actress version of Tom Trago's "Lost In The Streets Of NYC" was originally release back in mid 2009 on a Voyage Direct Remixes 12? alongside an equally good MCDE remix and has been out of print for some time - thus another chance to bask in this uptempo Detroit minded techno should not be passed up. The mental image of the Rush Hour staff rummaging around in a big shed out the back of their Spuistraat store for the material that forms this series is only strengthened by the B Side remix from Convextion. The Dallas based producer was commisioned to remix Terrence Dixon's seminal Population One production "Rush Hour" - the very track that inspired the company's name - alongside DJ Rolando and Aardvarck for a two part re-release to celebrate the label's tenth anniversary. Convextion actually submitted two remixes, the ambient version that featured on that 2007 release, and the intense, other worldly electro workout which has remained in the Rush Hour vaults until now. Highly recommended!

Machine Funk
Air Rage
Review: The UK techno veteran Ben Sims twists and teases his machines to the point of exhaustion on Air Rage Part 2. "Machine Funk" sees Sims deliver a more upfront, slamming approach, its tunnelling, filtered riff swirling above the terse metallic framework, while the title track takes the prize for most intense cut. Powered by hissing percussion and propulsive drums, it's the grinding air raid siren that powers in overhead that makes it so memorable.

Vendetta (Kirk Degiorgio remix)
Keep Believing (Theo Parrish remix - radio edit SS translation)
He's Alright (John Morales M&M dub mix)
Review: Round seven of the Far Out Remix Project for its in-house Monster Disco outfit, which to date has seen everyone from disco doyen John Morales to Detroit heavyweight Theo Parrish and UK types 4 Hero and Mark E tackle material from a cast of talented musicians overseen by Azymuth's Jose Roberto Bertrami. Two of the aforementioned names return, along with a Far Out stalwart with Parrish and Morales joined by Kirk DeGiorgio for another stellar 12". ART boss DeGiorgio adopts his signature heavy techno style for a take on "Vendetta" that stretches the seams of the original to breaking point, while those who missed out on Theo's mind bending exploration of "Keep Believing" will find solace in the flipside radio edit version present here. Another John Morales M&M remix, this time a dub mix of "He's Alright" will interest the vintage disco heads.

Ra H & Dynamo Dreesen - "Spacepops" (Donato Dozzy rework)
Madteo & Sensational - "Freak Inspector" (Hieroglyphic Being rework)
Review: A simple yet devastatingly effective concept is executed on this excellent 12" with Morphine Records inviting two of contemporary electronic music's finest exponents of peerless production to rework classics from the Morphine archives. Donato Dozzy is handed the honour of messing with a track from Morphine boss Rabih Beaini, taking what is already quite a potent example of psychedelic techno in the 2009 Ra.H cut "Spacepops" and dragging it further into the realm of mind bending repetition. A real treat for Dozzy fans and it's complemented by a totally deranged flipside remix from Jamal Moss. Madteo's "Freak Inspector" is barely recognisable after being put through the Hieroglyphic Being grinder, though crucially an element of danceability remains.

Planet Of Minds
Singularity Jump
Review: After the success of the first release, Tanstaafl returns for their second wax adventure, this time with the musical renegade DJ October at the helm. October has entered a new phase of production for the TANSTAAFL series and has focused himself firmly on a reduced, stripped and effective formula for the floor. His productions are heavy, smoked out narcoleptic dub infused journey's, and his latest 12 offers more or less of the same opaque vibe but with his sights firmly set on the floor, with one foot in the past and the other in the future - drawing from his usual Detroit, NYC and Chicago influences. So we kick off 2012 with a future classic, 'Singularity Jump', which douses you in synthesized Saxophone hooks, chopped vocal samples and a meaty Juno Hip-House inspired bass-line. 'Planet Of Minds' is more of a inner space affair very much inspired by acid and dub. Successfully combining the two, October injects more of an airy feel into the mix and delivers a moody cosmic acid jam that will not fail your dancing feet or tripped-out mind. Definitely one for the later hours... This is going to be an anthem, hands down, so get it before it's gone for good.

Keep Planning
Review: Downwards complement the recent triple headed and undeniably sizeable trawl through the various stages of Karl O' Connor's development into a UK techno icon with this crucial 12". Ital is essentially a buffed up and remastered version of Regis' Application of Language EP from 96, including all three tracks plus slipping in a previously unheard take on "Keep Planning" for good measure. The title track has O'Connor at his rawest, with shuffling, jack hammer drums fully primed to pulverise all takers, whilst the abundance of grimy analogue licks on "Surface" always threaten to spill over into sonic chaos with thrilling results. On the flip "Lapal" hints at the minimal direction Regis would later delve into, whilst the sheer density of pressure at play on the alternate version of "Keep Planning" should come with a health warning.

SR2
Review: Throbbing basement techno vibes aplenty here as NX1 (aka Joan Sureda and Tomas Bernabe) debut on the ever impressive Spanish hub Semantica. A crisp breakbeat underpins A-Side roller "SR 1", with the synths ruggedly hanging over the track like leaden clouds and percussive ticks and hisses imbuing the track with an irresistible groove. Flipping over, "SR 2" has more of a big room feel to it, with a vast, reverb-laden soundscape characterised by neck snapping percussion and occasional wooshes of low frequency pressure. Slip it down a notch to 33rpm for some druggy slow-mo doomscape business!

Almost Like It Used To Be
Arties Mood
Heartstrings
Essex
Review: Delsin's second release in its fledgling house-tinged series is a killer, with veteran producer Steve Pickton aka Soul 223 at the helm. Almost Like It Used To Be follows the well received debut 12? from wonderkid Gerry Read, and once Delsin turn to a UK producer, although this time they plump for experience over youth: Pickton began producing in the early 90s, and is best known for his ambient/IDM techno work under the Stasis moniker. He has released records with the likes of Mo Wax and Soul Jazz, as well as three albums for Peacefrog, namely Inspiration (1995), Fromtheoldtothenew (1996) and 2003?s Past Movements, and his vast experience is all too obvious on this EP, which has echoes of the crackly, jazz-influenced output of Kenny Dixon Jnr, with the hazy, lolloping beat of "Arties Mood" and uber-deep "Heartstrings" standing out in particular. Well worth checking.
