Expansion
Space Being
Field Control
Review: The buzz around the first Wilson Phoenix release was huge - good luck finding a copy of that one! The mysterious techno entity returns for round two and delivers the goods once more with some razor sharp club cuts that smartly straddle vibes without losing their way. "Expansion" is a fist-pumping, 90s-indebted techno workout with an urgent stomp at its heart - the pointed Motor City stabs and raw 909 drums are a gift for anyone wanting to whip the crowd up. "Space Being" is a wilder affair with bright and bold synth leads splattered over a sizzling electro beat. "Field Control" mans the B side with a robotic throwdown that should tickle electro, wave, new beat and house heads as much as techno fiends.

Review: A new Donato Dozzy album is more than news for us, it's a celebration. Apart from the fact that Italy's contemporary techno king is one of our favourite dance music producers, he is also extremely suited to the LP format. Each and every album the Dozzy has put out has, in some way or another, been and remained relevant even years after its release. Much in the same way, his debut alum for Berlin's mythical Tresor comes in the shape of Filo Loves Acid, an eight-track showdown of the man's magic on the 303. Moreover, unlike his previous albums, where space and ambience was significantly explored, this LP revels in its focus of the dancefloor while still retaining a vision and a narrative throughout. A crisp, magnificent production is accompanied by rolling drum machine beats, infinite acid loops, and Dozzy trademark sound. Quality.

Review: Such has been the dizzying rise of Helena Hauff in recent years that the release of her second album, Qualm, feels like a genuine "event". Preceded by a limited, while label edition, the Hamburg producer's first full-length in three years is undoubtedly worthy of the growing hype surrounding it. By design, the 12 tracks are raw, distorted and lo-fi, with Hauff peppering heavyweight, redlined drum machine beats - think wayward Chicago jack, laidback electro and nails techno - with a mixture of razor-sharp acid lines, moody industrial textures and drowsy chords. The clattering intensity of the album's dancefloor moments is in sharp contrast to the creepy and evocative, soundtrack style electronic soundscapes showcased elsewhere on the album. These - ambient in ethos, but more experimental in tone - are frequently amongst the set's most inspired moments.

Your Mind (8:29)
Review: Some collaborative business from the mighty Drumcode camp, as boss man Adam Beyer joins forces with long-serving label artist Bart Skils for the very first time. There's just a single track (albeit pressed on to rather nifty looking marbled vinyl) to get your teeth into, but it's impactful. The duo has put a thunderous, mind-altering arpeggio bassline and heavy kick-drum/hi-hat pattern at the heart of the action, variously decorating it with long, drawn-out organ chords, creepy held synthesizer notes and - most potently - a beguiling vocal sample that neatly summarises the Drumcode clubbing ethos ("you... you're losing your mind"). In other words, it sounds like a future big room techno anthem.

Review: Alongside Bedrock XX: a new compilation (and mix) of exclusive tunes celebrating the label's 20th anniversary, boss John Digweed also presents the tenth edition of his Live In series here - where he ventured to Tokyo's legendary Contact club earlier in 2018. This all nighter is one they'll still be talking about to years for come. There will be a limited edition vinyl pressing of a dozen or so of the 64 tracks featured in his complete mix (across three volumes) featuring the likes of Jimmy Van M, Pascal FEOS, Robert Babicz and many more. Part 1 features French hi-tech soul merchant Madben: whose adrenalised rendition of Molecule's "Sila" will propel you directly into the stratosphere, melodic techno expert Denis Horvat serves up "Guilty Pleasure" where the rising Danish star presents more of his highly engineered sonic futurism and label bosses John Digweed and Nick Muir appear also: with a sleek and brooding rework of Luke Brancaccio & Simon Berry's "Close Your Eyes".

Broken Spell (6:03)
Skywards (5:29)
A New Day (5:38)
Disjointed Route (5:01)
Review: Rising star and all round nice guy John Shima has gone on record as saying it was a dream to work with B12 man Steven Rutter, whose work from the early 1990s onwards has been a constant source of inspiration. Predictably, the duo's first collaborative EP is something of a far-sighted, intergalactic treat. Opener "Skywards" sets the tone, wrapping melancholic chords, poignant melodies, rumbling bass and deep space electronics around a soft-focus IDM beat. There's a classic "Artificial Intelligence"-era deep electro feel about the similarly beautiful and melodious "Broken Spell", while "A New Day" pulses and throbs impressively via the use of a stabbing but spacey bassline and shimmering chords. Closer "Disjointed Route", a slow motion but intensely picturesque affair, is also sublime.

Atom Soup
In The Clear
A Brief Trip To Space
French Stu
Review: After a strong run of releases between 2013 and 2014 that saw the likes of Hakim Murphy and Mark Forshaw grace their grooves, III Rivers are back in action with a sterling new effort from apparent debutant producer Dane Weaver. The techno foundations of the label sound as strong as ever on "Atom Soup," which charges ahead on firm but malleable arpeggios with an acidic undertone. "In The Clear" is a more wriggly affair with a swung groove and plenty of off kilter delights for wonkier dancefloors. "A Brief Trip To Space" opens up the B side with some delightful anchorless tones, and then "French Stu" burrows deep into the outer realm of machine manipulation in a gritty demonstration of leftfield techno.

She Lost Control (5:51)
Process (6:40)
Catarse (6:06)
Mind Awake (6:41)
Review: Long-serving Brazilian techno titan Redolfo Wehbba made his bow on Drumcode earlier in the year, delighting the Swedish label's army of fans with the Eclipse EP. Here he returns with what may be the first and only EP ever named in honour of a kitty's chocolate starfish. "Catarse", the aforementioned title track, is something of a bombastic, big room techno roller; a thumping affair where dreamy, saucer-eyed riffs slowly rise above an intense rhythm track. While good, it's arguably not a patch on the ragged intensity of opener "She Lost Control" - all ricocheting drum machine fills, wild electronic riffs and rumbling bass - or "Mind Awake", a throbbing, sleazy and downright intoxicating workout that contains some distinctly dystopian noises.

Review: Conforce's Silent Harbour project has been relatively dormant since its inception in 2012, awakening only once with an album for Deep Sound Channel, back in 2015. It's clear that this is a space in which Boris Bunnik's mind can travel and expand, allowing him to roam more freely on the LP format. In fact, this new album for Denmark's Echocord, Noctiluca, is a sparse and explorative piece of work that sees the artist go way deeper than any of his work under the multitude of aliases through which he releases music. Using dub techno as the main ingredient, these six experiments go from the very abstract to the very concrete, jumping between ambient and techno on a constant basis. While the album's cold exterior helps the tracks to portray a strong sense of melancholia, there is something warm and alluring about its sounds and how they mould into one another. In all honesty, it's dub-techno like we've never heard it before. More Silent Harbour, please...

Review: Irreverent online music platform Ransom Note have been keeping the spirit of Jockey Slut well and truly alive in the digital age since 2009. Sensing that house and techno is currently lacking in labels characterised by a sense of humour, Ransom Note have decided to launch their own with the debut offering from Madrid based mystery producer Bawrut. Originally released digitally through local Madrid label Silencio last year, it is good to see "Ciquita" and "1234" make it onto 12" here with the former presented in slightly amended form via a R$N edit. If anything the rambunctious acid delight of the track is embellished further on this killer edit, which is complemented nicely by the mind bending vocal edits of the flip.

Ness - "Psychotechnologies" (Alan Backdrop remix) (8:07)
Claudio PRC - "Night Shift" (Luigi Tozzi remix) (7:16)
Review: The latest missive from Italy's The Gods Planet crew offers brand new takes on catalogue cuts from Ness and Claudio PRC. Alan Backdrop is the selected remixer on side A, serving up a restless and spooky take on "Psychotechnologies", which originally featured on Ness's 2017 album Trancemigration. Backdrop's brilliant version is built around a druggy, arpeggio style bassline, cymbal-heavy percussion and all manner of gently pulsating dark room chords and aural textures. On the flip, Luigi Tozzi gets busy with Claudio PRC's recent "Night Shift", adding a little more energy and some seriously mind-altering electronics to an otherwise deep and trippy techno workout.

Strobo-Acid (6:15)
Review: Mainz man (sorry) DJ Arg is undoubtedly one of Germany's foremost purveyors of full-throttle, mind-altering acid tracks - a kind of one-man, 21st century Hardfloor, minus the bombastic techno drums. Here he brings his titanium-plated take on jack-tracks to Super Rhythm Trax for the very first time. He fires a volley of warped TB-303 lines and clanking Phuture drums towards hipster DJs on opener "Trend Cnuts", before offering a deeper, wonkier and even more trippy assault on the senses via the drum machine handclap heavy hypnotism of "Pervers". Side B opens with the ghostly bounce of thrillingly loose mind-melter "Kimmi", while EP closer "Strobo-Acid" does exactly what it says on the tin.

Early Acids (5:33)
Review: London's Do The Du is back on his Senseverse imprint with its sophomore release. Much like the previous edition, he proves he's a big fan of that little silver Roland box - as demonstrated on the nefarious 303 sorcery of "Lost Acids", the late night/heads-down bang and clatter of "Colombine Acids" or the fittingly titled "Early Acids" - going for for a nostalgic and highly emotive late '80s feel. Remix duties come courtesy of the L.I.E.S./Technicolour affiliated Florian Kupfer - whose Mindful mix of "Lost Acids" takes the track into reductionist and freeform electronica territory.

Review: Since debuting with a thought-provoking cassette on Where To Now back in 2015, Melly has brought his brand of off-kilter electronics to Jheri Tracks and, under the DJ Apres Ski alias, Major Problems. Here he returns to the Dublin imprint with a quartet of cuts that are dreamy, head-in-the-clouds melodiousness at the heart of the action. There's something wonderfully blissful and thrillingly positive about near beat-free opener "Shrubbery" - a tropical ambient head-rush of epic proportions - while "Health Is Wealth" is a far more rough-and-ready, forthright take on dub techno than you'd expect. Melly doffs a cap to the current obsession with breakbeat-driven dream house revisionism on B-side opener "The Beds", before rolling something sizeable and diving into ambient dub waters on shimmering closer "Mineral Water".

Review: Permanent Vacation continues to commission new remixes of Philip Lauer and Gerd Janson's retro-futurist Tuff City Kids project. Predictably, there's plenty to set the pulse racing on this third volume in the ongoing series. KiNK steals the show with an EP-opening remix of Joe Goddard collaboration "Tell Me" that sits somewhere between sweaty, breakbeat-driven rave revivalism and glassy-eyed piano house cheeriness. Over on side B, Sascha Funke delivers a hybrid deep house/nu-disco take on "Wake People" that's warm, melodious and ear-pleasing, while Prins Thomas delivers a more up-tempo and organic-sounding remake of the same track that's even dreamier and loved-up.

Review: Having spent the last couple of years establishing their Rosten imprint, Swedish techno twosome Shxcxchxsh (try saying that while drunk) return to Avian, an imprint they've been associated with since 2012. There's much to enjoy throughout, not least the skewed, lo-fi techno-funk of twisted, off-kilter opener "Shulululu", where mangled, spacey pads and warped electronic pulses dance above a thusting bassline and broken techno beats. Elsewhere, "Shudududu" is a crackling chunk of dark and moody lo-fi techno that wouldn't sound out of place on L.I.E.S, "Shumumumu" is an otherworldly ambient treat and closer "Shunununu" expertly joins the dots between intense industrial murkiness and experimental IDM.

Review: The second instalment of the ongoing Pubblicazione series serves up a triple-header of dark, intense and otherworldly experimental treats. On the A-side Italian artist Violet Poison invites us to "The Drome", a place where druggy EBM arpeggio lines, throbbing synth motifs, discordant female vocal samples and thrusting industrial funk drums fight it out to the death. Over on the flipside, Diana Berti gives us a glimpse of her "Spider Pit", an altogether more melodious and crystalline place laden with glistening synthesizer motifs, bustling machine percussion and raw arpeggio bass. To round things off, Opfer Der Hingabe channels the spirit of the Duratti Column on the slow and seductive bliss of "The Victim (1990)".

Their own Immersion LP set the tone early last year, and now it's the turn of fellow Munich-based DJ and producer Skee Mask with the superb Shred. This 12-track set follows a couple of Ilian Tape singles from Skee Mask which marked him out as a producer of real potential but he's really outdone himself on Shred. There is a faint concept for those that want one, an expansion on his interest in snow and glacier caps, but it's easy enough to plunge headfirst and enjoy this LP on the merits of the music alone. Ambient pieces slide into thunderous techno productions and thrilling sideways turns into broken junglist cuts and vintage IDM sounding diversions.

Pandora's Box is his second missive for Monika Kruse's label and boasts a trio of heavyweight rubs. The main attraction is undoubtedly the post-apocalyptic intensity of "Pandora", where paranoid electronic motifs, ghostly chords and melancholic melodies slowly rise above a suitably slamming, redlined rhythm track.
