More goodies this month, there seems to be loads of great new music around at the moment!
Great new funky African music from Seun Kuti , plus unique Kenyan styles from the Owiny Sigoma Band (try dropping some of their tunes alongside house cuts, the hypnotic instrumentation fits right in) plus outstanding Afro/latin reissues from Marijata, Sofrito, K Frimpong & the ever-reliable Soundway records, opening a world of amazing tropical music without having to spend years digging for it!
Deep house heads are well catered for too, I am still getting my head around the massive Virgo Four box-set after a month, old school trooper Jovonn comes with a great new 12", Marcellus Pittman's 'Eastside Story' is his usual mixture of grimy & sublime, Rick Wilhite does a similar, unmistakeably Detroit style on his debut LP, Julio Bashmore kicks off the new Futureboogie label in fine style with a simple euphoric bomb, and Joy Orbison does the business in a nervous, wriggly percussive style on 'Wade In'.
Unclassifiable Future Music styles come in the shape of the ace new Burial 12", his grainy, skittery sound present & correct as always. Kode 9 & The Spaceape do not disappoint on their new LP, plenty of moods & tempos to get your teeth into. My own mix of Hizatron is still doing the business, as is the Royalty 12", with 2 of the tracks sounding like Dam Funk on Steroids. Addison Groove goes all Detroit electro (Check the UR style sleeve), 3:33's EP1 is a must for DJ Shadow fans, and Wagon Christ goes, erm, just about everywhere on his new Ninja Tune LP
To finish, three soulful nuggets.. Barrington Levy's soulful oddity 'The Time Is Right' sounds as good as ever, PPU dig out the great 'He's Alive' by Michael Soward, and Joey Negro brings us another fantastic compilation of Soulful Disco gems.
As for me, I am busy in the studio this Month, so expect new Scruff stuff soon!
