Hold Me
Oi Dirty (feat Scratcha DVA)
Molly
Review: With the dust long since settled from her Playin' Me album, Cooly G is back in action on Hyperdub with a trio of fresh ideas that show off her evolution as an artist to be reckoned with. Lead track "Hold Me" builds on the atmospheric slant that pervaded G's LP and fills the enchanting space with a lean but purposeful UKF throwdown that rises into psychedelic peaks and melts back down into an especially alluring groove. Old sparring partner Scratcha DVA is back in the mix on "Oi Dirty", as the pair take a loping drum workout and have some fun flinging kitchen sink-esque noises about the room with abandon. "Molly" rounds things off with a focused club track that packs in dubby chords, robotic whirrings and an all-round techno intent that shows a lady in full control of her club-based tendencies.

The Day
Handy Clue
Review: Having first appeared on Swamp81 on a collaborative 12" with the grizzly bear of bass music himself Zed Bias, Manchester-based producer Paleman follows his subsequent drop on the affiliated School Records with a full debut for Loefah's label. Racking up an impressive 30,000 plays since the producer, real name Calum Lee slipped it onto Soundcloud a few months back, it's fair to say lead track "The Day" comes with a certain level of expectation. For fans of the Swamp sound it's pitch perfect too, with skeletal teched up 808 patterns and heaving sub bass the back drop to some snaking vocal edits by the Paleman. Those seeking something a bit ruder will be well served with the brukked up B Side "Handy Clue".

Horizon
Gateaway
Review: As one of the key proponents of the hardcore renaissance, Tessela's latest offering on R&S comes weighted under the kind of expectation that was foisted on Joy O releases a year or two ago. The lead tune is undoubtedly an utterly deadly weapon, maximising on stop-start dynamics to create a jaw-slackening moment for the heated dancefloor, all chunky pistons of breaks on top and ominous swells of techno undertow. "Horizon" opts for the dazzling optimism of hardcore synth stabs in the lead in before dishing out another dose of fractured jungle roll to freak out the movers and shakers, while "Gateway" takes the unresolved tension to a whole new level of nail-biting drama.

Only You
Review: First surfacing a few years ago on Black Butter with the appropriately titled UK bass/jungle hybrid "Fyah", Warrior One has become one of the emergent label's most potent weapons. A debut on "Hypercolour's little sister" Losing Suki is probably the veteran producer's most high profile release as Warrior One and you sense it's a good fit as soon as lead track "5ths" swing into focus. It's been called a modern incarnation of "RIP Groove" by some blogs, and the classic 2 step vibes and powerful bassline is certainly reminiscent of that vintage jam though Warrior One melds it successfully with elements of classic US House. On the flip "NYC" is a wholehearted homage to the original house movement in the five boroughs with some truly killer keys, whilst "Only You" has the Warrior One edging back to a more UK-centric sound.

Ballad 4D VIP
Not Mad (Helix Bootleg)
Review: Arriving the same week as his return to the Clone Jack For Daze label, Night Slugs co-founder L-Vis 1990 drops this hotly anticipated 12" for the White Label series. Centre stage is a VIP take on "Ballad 4D", a highlight of last year's Ballads EP from Connolly. Much of the layered production that made up the original has been discarded in favour of some expertly chopped Jungle style percussion and there's a stop start progression to the track that will really mess with dancefloors. On the flip, Night Slugs' go-to remixer of choice Helix provides his own bootleg of Ballads EP track "Not Mad", which will please fans of the Atlanta-based producer's own distinct brand of skeletal grime-techno hybrids.

Hackney Parrot
Helter Skelter
Review: ** HACKNEY REPRESS ** Tessela has been one of the multi-headed UK bass scene's most interesting talents since he first appeared in 2011; this first release on his fledgling Poly Kicks label comes from the producer himself, featuring two tracks that show a clear development of his signature sub-heavy sound that references classic breakbeat and jungle. "Hackney Parrot" first via a Jackmaster and Loefah Boiler Room session last November, and its stuttering vocal and tunnelling subs still pack a punch, but "Helter Skelter" just edges it out with its heavily swung rhythms and crackly jungle samples hissing away in the background.

Review: Having firmly established himself as Hessle Audio's go-to man for boisterous blends of UK bass music and techno, Kevin McAuley has finally been given a chance to commit his DJ skills to CD. His fabricLive mix is as entertaining as you'd expect, serving up a heavily percussive fusion of robust techno, wide-eyed, rush-inducing "moments", skittish post-dubstep darkness, and plenty of those dubstep/techno hybrids he's long embraced. There's enough blissful, spine tingling moments amongst the darkness (see Pearson Sound's impeccable "Starbust") to keep things fresh, a smattering of bona fide scene anthems (MGUN, Pev & Kowton), and a sprinkling of forgotten or little-known gems (a rare outing for Speedy J's 1992 Euro-techno classic "Something For Your Mind").

Stage 2
Review: Modern Love stalwarts Miles Whitaker and Andy Stott turn their attention to footwork with their Millie and Andrea aliases and they do it well! This single-sided Stage 2 12" sees the featuring track take in industrial techno, noise, and drone on the bottom end, while up top there's chipmunked R&B vocals, sampled pop harmonies, cut strings, and skittering snares plotted in all kinds of arrangements. This is genre-bending music that as serious as it is fun.

Review: Effectively a love letter to Detroit and its rich synth and drum machine history, everything about Notal's debut release screams respect. Close your eyes and it instantly whisks you back to a time when Underground Resistance were forming and the Electrifying Mojo was still ruling the airwaves. Highlights include the sudden shards of vibrant euphoric light in the otherwise dark, pulsating "Ancient Theory", the huge butt-slapping hi-hat insistency on "Side Huit" and the wonderfully unpredictable rhythm dynamic on "Clear Mind". Impeccable business. Expect plenty more from this talented Detroit devotee very soon.

Review: A key player in the Ed Banger movement, Mr Oizo collaborator and, arguably, the man who made Uffie really shine... Feadz needs no introduction. And this debut album has been on the cards for well over a decade. Naturally it's worth the wait: from the tongue-in-cheeky autotune R&B sleaze and the rifle-like electro-trap-funk of "Paper Cut" to the ghetto-minded booty-buster "Eastside" and silky-smooth disco-breaks beauty of "It's Enough", it's Feadz at his most extensive, accomplished and exciting. Future-looking while entrenched in electronic music's roots, Instant Alpha will cause instant appeal.

Review: Modeselektor's 50 Weapons imprint shifted focus a little last year, moving back to the dancefloor following 2012's obsession with artist albums. As part of their master plan, they released nine (count 'em) vinyl-only remix singles. Here, those tracks are collected together on CD for the first time, presented in nerd-friendly chronological order. The material - a woozy, late night blend of sparse post-dubstep grooves, heads-down techno (see the reworks from Truncate and Robert Hood), leftfield rhythms (Lee Gamble) and evocative, anthemic moments (shouts to Marcel Dettmann, DJ Friction and Legowelt) - offers depth and variety, with the tracklist offering a veritable who's who of cutting edge underground producers. For the heads, there's also a clutch of previously unreleased remixes, including Tale of Us's most unusual and underground work to date.

Madman
Review: London ghetto/gutter funk crew We Buy Gold come correct with this anonymous - not to mention limited - three track 12". The end result is a body-shoving blend of jungle spirit, snub-nosed juke attitude and raw bass funk. "Bass 2 Dark" takes elements of the L Double jungle classic and gives them a contemporary footwork twist. "Heathens" is much more of a booty-bass cheek-slapper with high-end riff infection and sneaky breakbeat snare rolls. "Madman" is the darkest of the set; steppy-yet-rolling, slow-yet-fast, classic-yet-future... It pretty sums up everything that's great about jungle, juke and techno in one nasty composition. You'd be a madman to miss out.

Review: Studio Barnhus continue to surprise, with the first release of 2014 a label debut that shines the light on Stockholm's nascent footwork scene. Described as "the man behind the single best demo email Studio Barnhus ever received," Henry Rodrick's label debut consists of six-tracks that offer a neat document of the work the producer is doing as part of the Svensk Bas collective along with fellow Barnhus graduate Baba Stiltz and Marcus 'Basutbudet' Price. All the material here has been severely roadtested by Barnhus founders Boman, Kovacs and Nordkvist over the past twelve months and tracks such as "Rain & Tears" come filled with the self-effacing touches one comes to expect from a Studio Barnhus release. It's quite exciting to hear how a style of music that's been gestating in Chicago for several decades has been interpreted by a crew from the Gullmarsplan district of Stockholm.

Review: The buzz surrounding UK producer Imami has developed to the point Apothecary have promoted this debut EP from digital to vinyl. Beautiful white vinyl at that. Refusing to sit still, each of the five tracks here tickles a different corner of the dance with detail. From the stuttering jacks and Classic Records style wonk of "Melted Love" and the uncompromising techno tenacity of "Skellies" to the lush west coast sleaze-funk of "Ghost2Ghost", debut EPs are seldom so successfully extensive. Rich in creativity, expect big things from Imami in the near future.

Review: After a relatively quiet 2013 release-wise Ross Tones offers up a fresh proposition for his ardent followers on regular haunt Local Action, switching up his usual Throwing Snow moniker for the spanking new pseudonym Alight. With a full four tracks to showcase this new sound on, there are definite similarities to be drawn from his more prevalent output but in the minimal atmospherics and molten bass undulations of "Darqa" there is definitely a new beast at work. The title track too takes a distinct stance with haunting Eastern vocals hovering over malevolent bass growl and a curveball drum & bass excursion in the climax of the track.

Review: Best known as Presk, Amsterdam-based Pieter Willems made his debut under the mantle on the Ten Thousand Yen label back in 2011 with the Love Again EP, one of a number of lovingly presented records that nestled snugly in the crawlspace between garage, broken house and dubstep during the pre-bass music era. Since then Willems' bass focused brand of club music has graced 2020 Midnight Visions, Fourth Wave and hometown club-turned-label hub Audio Culture. More recently the Presk project has been put on ice whilst Willems focused on Will & Ink, a collaborative project with Felix Lenferink that has resulted in a pair of distinctive records filled with heads down techno. A return to Ten Thousand Yen under the revived Presk guise is most welcome here, with Saluki already a favourite of the gelled up Numbers supremo Jackmaster. The four-track EP continues to showcase Willem's sound under the Presk mantle which combines a "bruk shuffle with a natural ?flare for techno".

Review: The partnership between Russian singer Lena Kaufman and Parisian film-maker/selector Oof is as unique as it is exciting. Previously released via their own site in the summer of 2013, "Happy Route" now benefits from a full vinyl reload. And with comparisons to the likes of Lamb, The xx, Bjork and Goldfrapp, it seriously demands your attention. Dreamy, psychedelic and sprung with surprise throughout, highlights include the bleeping bumps and shuffles of "Happy Route" and the tear-filled drama of "All I See Is You". Genuinely one of a kind.

Review: Software's first release of 2014 sees the label move into further uncharted territory, with Death After Life, the debut album of Chicago-based artist Ryan McRyhew, otherwise known as Thug Entrancer. Relocating from Denver to Chicago in 2011, the seclusion and proximity to Chicago's rich dance music heritage afforded him the time to create what the label describe as "in-depth and unconditional music" recomposing both Chicago juke and house. Nominally fitting in with the current trend for stark, monochromatic hardware productions, with a "pitch-dark motif" running through the album, Death After Life was mainly recorded "on the fly with very few overdubs and zero reliance on sampled sources." Unlike the woozy textures of last year's excellent Huerco S LP on the label, Death After Life is a noise-influenced album of techno and experimental beats marked out by its high fidelity sound.

Review: First surfacing on Werkdiscs back in 2010 with the wonderfully strange Sensational collaboration Smashing Your System, Cambridge-based producer Nochexxx finally comes good on the potential shown across a smattering of subsequent 12"s with his debut LP - if you don't count the self released cassette tape Greatest Record issued last year that is! Released on irregular home RAMP, Thrusters finds Nochexxx recollecting "the rich synthesized lexicon of Drexciya and the prismatic glory years of Zomby" as the label puts it. If you've indulged in previous Nochexxx material, you'll love the eleven tracks here which commence in breakneck fashion with "Exholst" and doesn't really relent - there's a touch of vintage Vibert/Rephlex at play here which should be enough for most to investigate further. Largely instrumental, Nochexxx does make space for one vocal cut "Cola Duck" that features Clone Crown Ltd don Zacky Force Funk and sounds like Dam Funk on LSD.

Review: Sitting somewhere between Brandt Brauer Frick and Guillaume & The Coutu Dumonts, Brooklyn live-minded trio Archie Pelago have yet to drop a record that doesn't take generic boundaries and burn them down to the ground. Powered by rainbow shades of jazz, sharp craggy spikes of techno and sparkling flurries of lush electronica, this EP is their most adventurous to date. At over 30 minutes and five tracks, it's also their most generous. Vibe-wise the title track sounds like Harold Faltermeyer getting remixed by Aphex Twin while "Neighborhood Mephisto" continues the 160 tempo with an organic, string and horn heavy emphasis. Elsewhere we get spiritualised by the mournful cries on "Saturn V", we're KO'd by deep sax wheezes on "D's Diamonds" and experience the band's perspective on Detroit's legacy on "Chilly". Beautiful.
