Louis Jordan - "Saturday Night Fish Fry" (edit)
Bobby Bland - "Honey Child" (edit)
Review: Last year veteran London selector Richio Suzuki built off the success of his Hawaiian Bop club nights with the launch of an affiliated edits label, and true to form the first beautifully presented 7" release sold out swiftly. The man Richio is back with a second 7" here and the care and subtlety of the edit is very much evident once again. Leading the stampede is a tweak on Louis Jordan's big band swing standard "Saturday Night Fish Fry" which has been treated with a dash more bump in the bassline by Suzuki, whilst the flip switches the focus to a certified member of The Blues Hall of Fame in Bobby Bland. Here Bobby's trademark growl is blessed by a decidedly latin arrangement that will nice up many a Bop.

Review: This deliberately mysterious outfit hailed from Italy, and this, the first of two previously ultra-rare and highly collectible LPs, is no less than a psychedelic classic, chock full of wild keyboards, fuzz guitar rampage, blissed-out trance states and fearful avant-garde trickery. It's been ascertained that Braen's Machine was the work of heralded soundtrack composer Perio Ulimani, as well as Morricone collaborator Allesandro Allesandroni, and this would make perfect sense, as "Underground" is very much in the metier of Italian soundtrack legends Goblin, and bound to appeal to fans of the widescreen psych sweep of Aphrodite's Child. Bellisima.

Review: A triumph of enigmatic melody and an enduring document of one artist's personal vision, Matt Johnson's 1983 album still sounds as unique and affecting thirty years on as it did on its release. Replete with bittersweet gems like "This Is The Day" and "Uncertain Smile", "Soul Mining" is an album of paradoxes; too deft of touch to be rock, too weighty to be pop, it defies genre, and still sounds fresh despite being a product of Thatcher's '80s. Moreover, this album, which Johnson would arguably never top, is testimony to the good cheer that can be spread by even the most perennially gloomy songsmith.

Review: "Anthology" serves as a celebration of The Clean, a band whose influence extends so far beyond their New Zealand home that even if you have never heard of The Clean before, you have surely heard of some of the bands (Pavement, Yo La Tengo, and Superchunk, to name a few) who have been influenced by their unique blend of homemade garage rock, hook-filled melodies and psychedelic experimentalism.

The album is a compilation from across The Clean's legendary career, which began in 1981 and continues today. Merge originally released the two CD "Anthology" in 2003, but now this collection is available on quadruple LP. "Anthology" kicks off with The Clean's call-to-arms debut "Tally Ho!"; the story of the infectious track's $60 recording bill is now legendary. It continues with the early EPs "Boodle Boodle Boodle" and "Great Sounds Great" in their entirety. The hits "Billy Two", "Anything Could Happen", "Beatnik" and "Getting Older", live favorites like "Point That Thing Somewhere Else" and instrumentals "Fish" and "At the Bottom" all serve up memories of the joyous noise that characterized The Clean of that time. These recordings, mostly made by the band with Chris Knox and Doug Hood at the helm of the 4-track, capture the bright, raw sound of a classic garage band.

After a brief breakup, the band recorded "Vehicle" in 1989, made in three days and engineered by Alan Moulder (Smashing Pumpkins, Nine Inch Nails, My Bloody Valentine). The sounds of "Vehicle" and the two albums that followed it, "Modern Rock" (1994) and "Unknown Country" (1996), make up the bulk of discs 3 and 4 of the vinyl "Anthology". In addition to selections from these full-length recordings, "Anthology" includes two songs released only on a US 7 inch and two that appeared on a bonus flexidisc with the "Modern Rock" LP.

Review: In 2012, "Country Funk 1969-1975 (Volume I)" gathered together songs from a genre with no name. It's a genre created not from geography or shared ideology, but a term applied retrospectively based solely on the feel of the songs: hip-swinging rhythms with bourbon on the breath. These were songs to make your cowboy boots itchy, written and performed by the likes of Bobbie Gentry, Johnny Jenkins and Link Wray. Songs that encompass the elation of gospel with the sexual thrust of the blues; country hoedown harmonies cut with inner city grit. Compiled from tracks dating from the late '60s to the mid '70s, "Country Funk" is the sound of country music blending with sounds and scenes from coast to coast, white America's heartland music blending with the melting pot as the nation assessed its identity in advance of its bicentennial year.

The good news for the people who fell in love with the first volume of "Country Funk" is this: there's plenty more where that came from. Light In The Attic has followed up that first 16-track disc with a second volume, "Country Funk Volume II 1967 - 1974", and a new set of loose-talking, lap steel-twanging tracks. On the single CD / 2xLP volume you'll find household names like Willie Nelson, Townes Van Zandt, Kenny Rogers, Jackie DeShannon, JJ Cale, Bobby Darin and Dolly Parton. You'll also find obscure artists like Bill Wilson, whose lost "Ever Changing Minstrel" album was produced by the feted Dylan producer Bob Johnston, and Thomas Jefferson Kaye, noted producer of Gene Clark's opus "No Other". Gene Clark's here too, as half of Dillard & Clark, wringing raw emotion from The Beatles' "Don't Let Me Down".

Review: Until this point, the project of Tim Presley was largely a bedroom-bound garage rock proposition, but "For The Recently Found Innocent" was recorded in the studio of his friend and fellow '60s revivalist Ty Segall, who also contributes drums. His first effort for Chicago label Drag City, the result is a vibrant slab of Buffalo Springfield-style songsmithery and Syd Barrett-esque whimsy, that manages to avoid the lure of the overly reverential in favour of a maverick spark that sets these kaleidoscopic transmissions from the ether alight. This marks the point where Presley truly comes into his own as a psychedelic seer, joining the dots between the California of the '60s and the thrift store chic of 2014.

Review: The Manics hold a unique position in the British rock annals, having managed to deliver stadium-sized bombast with an equally big heart for well over 20 years. Yet part of their charm is that they've never allowed themselves to get too comfortable in any one style, and "Futurology" marks another left-turn from this restless yet reliable troupe. Taking influences from krautrock and early '80s pop, and adding an electronic sheen to their gutsy stylings, "Futurology" deviates from the guitar-heavy style of yore. This band show no signs of falling prey to nostalgia or trading on former glories, and this album demonstrates that their generously-sized heart beats as boldly as ever.

Review: If it's both garage-rock ramalama and infectious songwriting you want, not to mention a record that sounds like it's been beamed in staight from 1966, look no further than the current project of Greg Cartwright, legendary progenitor of The Oblivians and The Compulsive Gamblers amongst others, whose incredible tunesmithery as well as his sheer joie-de-vivre have been responsible for some of the most memorable moments of the last twenty years in garageland. "Reigning Sound" takes a more laidback, organ-assisted and string-abetted tack, blending its rock'n'soul blasts with country-tinged melancholy and Brill building finesse, yet always with Cartwright's impossible-to-resist presence at front and centre. You're unlikely to hear an old-fashioned rock 'n' roll record this year that you're likely to want to spin over and over like this one.

Review: Compilation of absolutely must-have country blues. A mix of well known artists playing their signature songs, and more obscure musicians.

Highlights include Bukka White's elemental "Fixin' To Die", Lottie Kimbrough's seldom heard "Don't Speak To Me", George Carter's haunting "Ghost Woman Blues", Willie Brown's existential "Future Blues", Monroe Moe Jackson's wild "Go Away From My Door" and many more hits. The real stuff, and some of Mississippi Records' all time favorite tunes.

Review: Look up The Tea Street Band and you'll find this Liverpool act describe themselves as the "bastard mutilation that in its most extreme" with 808 State, Doves and baggy icons The Happy Mondays offered as reference point. Spend some time with their eponymous debut album and you'll find ten tracks that live up to this billing, dwelling in a zone where the lure of the bright lights of the weekend nightlife meets the glowing effects pedal lights of the indie practice room, and therefore it follows that their debut marks a marriage between dancefloor beats and boisterous invective, likely to appeal to fans of Friendly Fires, Klaxons and Flowered Up alike. For all those wondering if the dance-rock demimonde was in need of a shot in the arm, look no further.

Review: Dylan Carlson had already been the sole progenitor of an entire metal subgenre when Hex was released, his early albums with Earth having birthed a minimal drone-based elixir that both functioned on an avant-garde level and boiled the sound of the power chord down to its bones. Hex was originally released in 2005, and frequently changing hands from increasingly inordinate amounts prior to this reissue, marking the point where he took the spirit of his old band and metamorphosised it miraculously into a spare, dusty and expansively atmospheric sound more redolent of Neil Young's Deadman and the work of Ennio Morricone than his unflinching previous work. A frontier-destroying blueprint, and an enduring modern classic.
