Routed
Morethenyourself
Review: Romania's Vlad Caia has engineered his own personal take on minimal house and techno, with his last effort on Amphia being one of the years highlights! Romanian cousins All Inn Records invite him for a 2-tracker on the black label offshoot, where Caia kicks things off with "Routed", an enchanting journey into organic drums, subtle noise improvs and dreamy synth keys. "Morethenyourself" is Caia's housier personality, where his minimalitic approach is merged with a funky bundle of exotic vocals and subtle strings - Recommended to say the least!

I Can Tell You Of Course I Know It Was
Review: Japanese-born Fumiya Tanaka has been around for donkey's years, having released some timeless techno explosions on Tresor, Sundance and his very own Torema Records. It's time for his shot at the Perlon catalogue and "337" quickly sets the tone what what develops into a lo-fi, glitched-out frenzy of aqueous melodies, distant bass riffs and crunchy percussion - a subtle masterpiece. On the flip, things turn more raucous thanks to the nervous bundle of cowbells and snares spewing from all angles. Another great EP for Perlon's best year in a while!

A Certain Someone
Outside In
Review: Mannheim's Nick Curly returns to the Cecile imprint for a two track insight into how Between The Lines, his forthcoming debut album, is shaping up. Undeniably geared towards the floors, the somewhat straight up drum thuds and vocal samples that permeate the opening bars of "A Certain Someone" don't really prepare you for what is in reality a refreshing curveball of a track, with Curly bringing the atmosphere with fizzing textures, before proceedings veer in delightfully unhinged funk territory for the remainder of the A Side. "Outside In" takes a pleasantly off kilter approach too, all ramshackle percussive layers that barely keep in time with the relentless tribalistic drums and low set bass line.

Untitled (GCW Made Me Do It)
Tuwa
Review: The excellent Greta Cottage Workshop has long been a trusted hotspot for textured and intricate deep house. One of their regular contributors Wasserfall returns for another four dreamy, expressive cuts, varying the rhythms but maintaining the mood throughout. Lead track "Thursday" lets great ripples of melody radiate out over a clean and steady beat with that same ambiguous atmosphere you would find from the likes of DJ Qu. "Unwind" has a kinkier vibe to it, and a little touch of Detroit at the same time, but hold tight for the beatdown styles of "Tuwa" where the 4/4 kick gets cut loose to great effect.

Look Right Through (Jamie Jones remix)
Look Right Through (Art Department remix)
Review: Hands down one of the defining tunes of the past few years, "Look Right Through" has made Morgan Geist's side-project, Storm Queen, a top draw among modern house fans. Purists might sneer at Defected's intentions but it's likely this raft of especially commissioned remixes will see the sensation NYC anthem sung by Damon C. Scott reach a much wider audience. Hot Creations' figurehead Jamie Jones goes in for a tasty mailroom-friendly extension that replaces the fluttering chords of the original with a driving acid groove, whilst Crosstown duo Art Department turn in one of their signature haunted house renditions.

Let Me In (original)
Let Me In (Lee Curtis remix)
Review: Long standing Leeds hub 2020 Vision return to Traces, the well received debut set from long term affiliate Simon Baker to give "Let Me In" a much needed twelve inch release. The track was one of two collaborations Baker undertook with label mate and rising talent Debukas, and the Glaswegian's vocals melds perfectly with the playful, bouncing production to sound not unlike a North England variant on Art Department. This is 20/20 Vision so you expect the remix commissioning to be impeccably chosen and Lee Curtiss is undoubtedly that, tightening up the groove, dipping Debukas' vocal in the shallow end of the filter pool and allowing his own infectious synth hook to creep in and take over in cahoots with a subaqueous bass line

High Noon
Review: The loosely-organised production free-for-all that is the La PeNa imprint delivers missive number nine in the slow but steady 12" series, with the artists responsible shrouded in mystery. It's safe to say that the style comes from the angle of post-minimal house music, as intricate layers of organic percussion twist themselves around subtly emanating melodies in a streamlined and strung-out haze of tracks built for long nights. The groove is particularly engaging on "Discodogs", but it's really the madcap antics of "High Noon" that steal the show; creepy vocals and strange found sounds creating a distinctive atmosphere above the cautious beat.

Warning
Werds
Warning (Lil Mark Opiate Warning)
Review: Foot & Mouth are now firmly ensconced in the hearts of "propa house" lovers, and their eleventh vinyl drop sees the label borrow the talents of Leeds type J Cub from the equally excellent Eclectic Avenue Records. Lead track "Warning" fits the Foot & Mouth bill perfectly, marrying vintage house aesthetics such as ripe key stabs and female diva vox with a warm, contemporary rhythmic frame - all underlined by a richly intoxicating bass line. "Werds" is equally playable - and more playful - with chunky, snapping drums flirtatiously dancing with the filtered vocal refrain and undulating thick set electronic bass line. Disco 45 and Classic regular Lil Mark steps up to remix the title track in his inimitable tightly wound jacking style on the flip.
