Funky Rob Way (6:14)
Forgive Us All (8:00)
Boogie On (4:10)
Just One More Time (7:39)
Your Kiss Stole Me Away (5:22)
More (5:19)
Review: Eight years on from its previous reissue (that time courtesy of Analog Africa's "Limited Dance Edition" series), Mr Bongo is offering up a fresh, licensed re-press of Rob's eponymous 1977 Afro-funk masterpiece. If you missed out in 2011, the set is definitely worth picking up because it's rock solid heat from start to finish. Check, for example, the heavily percussive Afro-beat/Afro-funk fusion of "Funky Rob Way", the flanged funk guitars and heavy brass action of "Boogie On", the jazz guitars and loved-up vocals of "Your Kiss Stole Me Away" and the William Onyeabor-does-James-Brown heaviness of closing cut "More".

Tou't Jou Pa Min'm (4:33)
Tou't Jou Pa Min'm (1992 version) (4:16)
Cecilia (5:30)
On Jou Matin (4:18)
Review: Labels Hot Mule and Secousse have teamed up to deliver something special: a killer EP of "lost gems from the golden era of Zouk and Gwo-Ka" in Guadeloupe (that's 1985 to '92, fact fans). The four tracks showcased here were performed and produced by an artist whose fame in Guadeloupe sadly never spread any further, Max Rambhojan. The A-side boasts two versions of the rather brilliant and suitably cheery "Tou't Jou Pa Min'm": the jaunty, sun-kissed, whistle-sporting 1986 original mix, and Rambhojan's heavily electronic, synthesizer-heavy, calypso-tinged 1992 re-make of his biggest local hit. Over on side B you'll find the bubby dub bass, sparse synths and flute solos of the decidedly tropical "Cecilia" and a suitably breezy, sunset-ready gem entitled "On Jou Matin".

It's A Mess (7:36)
Afro Breakdance (6:30)
Review: After cutting his teeth in Atlantic-signed jazz-fusion band Kabasa in the early 1980s, vocalist and bassist Tata Sibeko briefly pursued a solo career. He only ever released two 12" singles as Tata, but one - the 1985 double A-side treat "It's A Mess/Afro Breakdance" - has gone on to become something of an in-demand item amongst collectors of South African dance music. Here Sharp Flat has given it the reissue treatment. A-side "It's A Mess" is a fine chunk of breezy, lo-fi electrofunk in which Sibeko sings cheerily - despite the downbeat lyrical content - over colourful synths, bubbling machine drums and a thickset synth bassline. Arguably even better is "Afro Breakdance", which sounds like a superior, slightly deeper South African take on teapot-dance innovators Break Machine.

Jide Obe - "Too Young" (5:13)
Mulamba - "Dashiki" (version instrumentale) (3:07)
Review: There's a slightly different feel to the latest instalment of the fantastic "Africa Airways" compilation series. While previous instalments have largely focused on heavy Afro-funk and Afro-soul, this fifth edition showcases material recorded during the disco and boogie era (1976-82). The ten included tracks are superb, with highlights including the fuzzy, Clavinet-driven thrills of "Sweet Sidney (Edit)" by Black Bells Group, the heavy grooves and dancing synth lines of Gyedu Blay Ambolley's "Highlife", the spacey Afro-boogie badness of Fotso's "French Girl" and the flash-fried disco-funk celebration that is Jide Obe's spacey, Moog-sporting "Too Young". As the old cliche goes, this is all killer and no filler.

Ron Con Limon (4:00)
La Veterana (4:32)
Review: Southern Californian five-piece Yanga first emerged three years ago with a now sought-after debut single that put a contemporary "Afro-Colombian" spin on the effervescent Cumbia style. Now operating on Names You Can Trust, their comeback has been spread across two must-have 7" singles. The highlight of this second "Volumen" is arguably A-side "Ron Con Limon", a viciously percussive, fuzz-soaked Cumbia outing where headline grabbing vocals and accordion lines rise above the band's infectious drums. In contrast, B-side "La Veterana" is deeper, darker and more bass-heavy, with the band's vocals and accordion melodies imparting a genuine sense of impending doom.

Feqer Feqer New (feat Alemayehu Eshete) (3:45)
Portrait Of Alemayehu (Daytime) (4:05)
Review: Last year, heavyweight Ghanaian-German band the Polyversal Souls returned to action with their first new material in three years - a killer Highlife single called "Basa Basa" featuring guest vocalist Lee Dodou. This speedy follow-up boasts a guest vocalist, too: near legendary Ethiopian soul and jazz singer Alemayehu Eshete. He makes his presence felt on "Feqer Feqer New", delivering a hazy and exotic vocal over the band's cheery, '60s style Gamelan backing track. The resultant cut is nothing less than spectacular. Over on side B, the band goes solo on the laidback and breezy "Portrait of Alemayehu (Daytime)", where chiming melodies and punchy horns rise above glistening guitars, rich bass and shuffling drums.

Review: First released back in 1977, Trio Mocoto's second eponymous album has long been a favorite with collectors of "MPB" - the most Brazilian of popular music styles. Thanks to the dusty-fingered diggers at Mr Bongo, the album is now available again on wax for the first time since 1980 (and, of course, for a fraction of the cost of an original copy). Like many of the greatest MPB albums of the period, the album's ten tracks brilliantly blend elements of samba, string-laden easy listening, soul, jazz-funk and fusion, with the band's strong group vocals and luscious instrumentation guaranteeing a warm, sun-kissed vibe throughout.

Ciumeira (3:24)
Rasga Teu Verso (2:42)
Review: For the 75th release in their long-running Brazil 45s series, the Mr Bongo crew has chosen to reissue some prime "MPB samba jazz" from 1965. The two tracks showcased here were originally issued on a rare 33rpm 7" single, one which collectors are now willing to pay silly money to obtain. Up first is "Ciumeira", a wonderfully jaunty and celebratory fusion of swinging sixties charm, Mod style organ stabs, smooth vocals and cheery samba-pop grooves. B-side "Rasga Teu Verso" has a more grandiose, easy listening kind of feel, albeit with the addition of punchy MPB horns and summery vocals so infectious that you'll be singing them in the shower in no time at all.
