Hello Bleep!
Leave Things
Review: One of Ostgut Ton's most interesting characters, Shed returns with his second album The Traveller. Our impression is that Shed had lots of fun making this album - his love for everything from UK hardcore and jungle to techno and dubstep seeps through the tracks and resonates with the listener. "M R Class" for example is proper Berghain tackle - a seriously thumping dub techno bomb. Elsewhere "Final Experiment" sounds like Shed has been listening to Werk Discs chief Actress, all bleeps and sonic squiggles submerged deep beneath layers of compression, while "Hello Bleep" has a cheeky "Spastik"-esque drum roll. Much like his debut opus Shedding The Past, this album successfully flows as a continuous body of music, despite (or perhaps because of) the sketch like quality of many of the songs. Undoubtedly one of the most important albums of 2010.

Reborn 1 (DJ Qu's Journey Towards Birth remix)
Reborn 2
Review: Curle follow in the footsteps of the FIT Sounds imprint and reissue this brilliant Walt J number. Originally released back in 1997 on the Dow label, "Reborn" is one of those tracks that makes us wonder why Walt J hasn't been embraced on a wider scale; a classic slab of ahead of it's time Detroit house that dices up some seminal Mr Fingers over a relentlessly fast paced groove - so simple yet so effective! It subsequently licensed for release by Curle in 2010 along with a superb corrugated "Journey Towards Birth" remix from DJ QU and it's this edition that's been repressed for consumption.

Shade (3:48)
Grace (8:33)
Insecure (8:37)
Review: ** Repress ** Dutch producer Conforce has caused ripples of excitement amongst the techno cognoscenti over the past few years with releases on the likes of Curle, Modelisme and of course Rush Hour. Fellow Amsterdam label Delsin are the latest to fall for Conforce's slick atmospheric charms, securing three cuts for his debut on the imprint. "Shade" kicks things off in menacing almost beatless fashion with the central haunting synth riff surrounded by a growing chorus of sci fi atmospherics and the occasional flourish of bass. It is complemented on the A Side by the futuristic shimmer of "Grace" with growling bass slowly encompassing the glistening chord patterns and straight kicks. The mid section where the bass dominates plays the precursor to the arrival of a tender piano melody that sees the track out. On the B Side "Insecure" takes it's time to fully arrive but the gloriously euphoric nature of the pulsing electronic synths and swirling 808 patterns make it totally worth it. Wow.

Review: Monster 12" here from Traversable Wormhole aka Adam X, with remixes from a pair of techno heavyweights. Berghain man Dettmann turns "Closed Timelike Curve" into a frenetic, unrelenting assault on the senses. It feels like a love letter to the 90s Tresor scene, and noticeably different to the stripped back and industrial sound associated with the new school of Berlin techno. Flip over for a remix from the always impressive Van Hoesen, who turns "When 2D Meets 3D" into a stripped back groover with an insistent drum pattern and subtle synth melody. Superb 12", not to be missed!

The Soul Is Back (Luke Slater remix)
The Soul Is Back (Marco Passarani remix)
The Soul Is Back (Fluxion remix)
The Soul Is Back (feat Jon Dixon - UR Timeline remix)
Review: Fabrice Lig must be having a nice old summer. Fine Art have released a superlative album from the Belgian, people are falling over themselves to heap praise on his 12" for R&S and now Third Ear get in on the game. Dipping into their archives, the UK imprint pick out "The Soul Is Back" from Evolution, Lig's 2007 album as Soul Designer and enlist a pretty darn impressive list of people to remix it. Luke Slater crafts a real metallic thump on his remix which competes with Flux Pavilion's menacing throbber for the peak time title. Marco Passarani takes a pleasing direction into melodic Detroit lushness which would nail remix of the release but for the total brilliance of the piano heavy Underground Resistance effort.

Overture
Mirage
Review: The ever mysterious Skudge come through with the third release on their self titled imprint and prove there's still plenty of scope for moulding raw back to basics machine funk. "Overture" proves to be one of Skudge's most hypnotic efforts to date, from the simple beginnings of a two note melody and shuffling kicks, the track locks into a raw captivating dubby groove. "Overture" really hits its stride when piercing 808s and weird vocal screeches are introduced in the final third. On the flip "Mirage" is equally mind bending, relying on thumping kick drums that will shake the foundations on a good soundsystem. Out of this an ever mutating rhythmic core crafted from overdubbed vocals emerges to duke it out with metallic synth stabs and an army of cascading hi-hats. In other words, exactly the sort of track that will destroy dancefloors if introduced at the right late night moment.

Review: Techno deity Jeff Mills graces us with the latest instalment of his series of unexplained (and unnamed) techno phenemonena. No stranger to providing techno backing to Sci Fi classics, Something In The Sky Vol 4 sounds like Mills providing the music to a 50s B movie about a Martian invasion of Washington DC via four cuts of outer galactic head music. Haunting strings shimmer beneath the hiss of deep pads on "Track 1" whilst paranoia inducing key swirls portray the Martian descent onto the Federal Triangle on "Track 2". On the flip proceedings get a tad more urgent, as infinitely coiling synths wrap around the relentless thud of "Track 3" with Mills displaying all his knowledge of crafting brain melting melodic music on the final hypnotic missive.

Chardon
Review: Two seriously raw techno thumpers from Mike Dehnert, released on his own Fachwerk imprint. "Spreepool" is sprawled across the A Side with a metallic, thumping beat that will have fans of Ben Klock and Levon Vincent cooing with delight. Flip over for "Chardon", which brings a locked in groove to proceedings with two killer breakdowns towards the end that are simply begging to be heard on a big soundsystem. Highly recommended.

Annihilate (original)
Annihilate (Brodinski remix)
Annihilate (Remute remix)
Review: Darren Emerson's Underwater imprint is once again the launch pad for Deepgroove with "Annihilate" being their first release this year. It's a welcome return for the Bristol duo with the track just the sort of bleep heavy techno beast they've become renowned for. The lysergic momentum that gathers pace towards the inevitable explosion of white noise make it a perfect fit for the darker moments on the dancefloor. Some heavy remix action on the B Side too, with Brodinski and Remute enlisted to give the release some added wow factor. Brodinski marks another chapter in his maturity as a producer, going to town on the bleeps whilst Remute transforms the track into a concrete slab of big room techno.
