Review: Earlier this year, Moses Boyd finally fulfilled on his immense promise with Dark Matter, a sophomore set that cemented his position as one of UK jazz's top talents. On the back of that success, his 2018 debut, Displaced Diaspora, has been given a fresh vinyl pressing. For those who missed out first time round, the album is a collaborative affair, with numerous guests joining in with Boyd's distinctively eclectic fusion fun. Afro-brass outfit Kevin Haynes Grupo Eleggua make a huge impression on a number of tracks, Zara McFarlane provides a sensual, sumptuous vocal on the classic late night jazz smokiness of 'City Nocturne' and Terri Walker and Louis V rise above the organic, jazz-fuelled hip-hop soul brilliance of 'Waiting On The Night Bus'.

Review: April Fulladosa grew up in Los Angeles, California. She begun writing songs at school when she was only 16 years old going onto write most of the tracks by 19 years of age for her sought after independent limited release 'Home Base' album from 1978. This single on new label imprint Reference Point showcases the talent of this lesser known artist who deserves to be heard by a brand new audience.

Review: As part of their ongoing 50th birthday celebrations, German jazz label MPS asked Italian musician and crate digger Nicola Conte to trawl through their archives for spiritual gold. The result is "Cosmic Forest", an eye-opening set of largely obscure and little known tracks originally recorded between 1965 and 75. There is much "straight-up" spiritual jazz to enjoy (Nathan Davis' "Evolution" being a prime example), but it's the cuts that draw on a wider palette of influences that really stand out. Check, for example, the Middle Eastern flourishes of George Gruntz's "Djerbi", the hippy-ish vocal bliss of The Third Wave's "Maiden Voyage", the meditative jazz raga that is "Yaad" by Motihar Trio, Schweizer Trio, Schoof & Wilen, and the tropical drums of "El Babaku" by El Babaku.

The Chase (version 1) (3:30)
The Hillary Step (4:38)
Review: It was two years ago when Finnish combo Bowman Trio (AKA trumpeter Tomi Nikku, double bassist Joonas Tuuri and drummer Sami Nummela) first rocked up on We Jazz to showcase their particular brand of "loft jazz". This fine single is the three-piece's first new material since the release of their eponymous debut LP in 2016. Both original compositions are pretty darn good, especially A-side "The Chase (Version 1)", where Tuuri's rubbery, "Bullit"-style bassline and Nikku's headline-grabbing trumpet solos brilliantly wrap themselves around Nummela's hybrid jazz/bossa-nova beats. The band opt for an altogether sunnier sound on flipside "The Hillary Step", an invitation to dance from the halcyon days of swing-time jazz that includes some killer stop-start sections and impeccable drum fills.

Review: 2018 has been a vintage year for those inspired by old Japanese ambient and new age jazz-fusion, with a plethora of reissues of obsure, sought-after albums from the '70s and '80s. Here's another. It comes from fast-fingered jazz bassist Motohiko Hamase, whose 1986 album "Reminiscence" has long been considered something of a slept-on gem. It's marked out by the prominence of Hamase's high register bass guitar lead lines and solos, around which are woven breezy Marimba melodies, new age synthesizer sounds, chiming metallic percussion and evocative classical orchestration. It's a magical blend of atmospheric and emotion-rich sounds, with "Childhood", "Tree", "Na Mo Che" and "Water Meadow" standing out.

Mizells (6:15)
Launchpad (5:56)
Bring It (5:40)
Review: For the second salvo on Cornhusker Records, the publicity-shy crew is treating us to a quartet of re-edits starting impressively with "Easily", a floor-focused rearrangement of a slap bass, woodblock and sax-heavy chunk of jazz-funk goodness, before turning a jaunty Mizell Brothers cut into a rolling house groover. The fun continues on side B, where the sweaty percussive Hammond funk of "Launchpad" is followed by head-in-the-clouds delight "Bring It", a subtle scalpel rework of a Clavinet-sporting Blaxploitation era disco-funk workout. Given the variety and quality on show, this has the feel of a record that might stay in your "playing out" box for a while.

Review: Gare Du Nord are Barend Fransen and Ferdi Lancee: a jazz, latin and blues duo from Belgium and the Netherlands - also known for their captivating live show that they perform with a nine member band. This brand new compilation contains a selection of their best songs from their first three albums, such as "Pablo's Blues" (with Robert Johnson - which was featured in St Germain's legendary Tourist), "You're My Medicine" (with Marvin Gaye), an extended version of "Rock Your Baby" recorded with the original singer George McCrae plus some brand new mixes. The three albums reached gold status, but were unavailable for 10 years due to Fransen and Lancee wanting to preserve the analogue sound of the tracks. Now the time has come and the 'French' period of Gare du Nord is presented here with the original tracks specially remastered for vinyl.

Review: Some three decades after making his debut, Brazilian synth-pop star turned veteran soul man Ed Motta continues to release brilliant music. There's an undeniably classic feel to his latest full-length excursion, "Criterion of the Senses", which sees him add smooth and effortlessly soulful English language vocals to rich backing tracks that variously doff a cap to sumptuous samba-jazz (wonderful duet "The Tiki's Broken There"), revivalist synth-boogie (standout "Your Satisfaction Is Mine"), AOR rock ("Shoulder Pads"), sugary jazz-funk ("Sweetest Berry", the Clavinet-happy shuffle of "Novice Never Noticed") and solo-laden smooth grooves ("X1 In Test").

Mild (Variation) (11:05)
Review: The latest album on Manfred Eicher's mighty ECM Records imprint comes from Jakob Bro, a Danish jazz guitarist who has been releasing a mixture of beautiful, inspired and thought-provoking music since 2005. On "Bay of Rainbows", he's joined by double bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron, though it's his layered electric guitar work - part Pat Metheny, part Jonny Nash - that catches the ear. As with many ECM releases, the material on offer here is not standard "jazz", instead twisting the form into new shapes equally inspired by ambient and experimental electronica (see the backwards solos and freestyle drumming of "Dug"). While the album is evocative and entertaining throughout, the focal point is undoubtedly closing cut "Mild (Variation)", an 11-minute ambient jazz epic that's breathtakingly beautiful.

Review: Although he was a member of countless well-regarded bands, jazz trombonist John Gordon found solo success much hard to come by. He only ever released two solo albums - both at the tail end of the 1970s - on Strata-East, with "Step By Step", his '76 debut, arguably being the pick of the pair. Here it gets the reissue treatment for the first time since 1990. There's plenty to set the pulse racing throughout, from the hypnotic grooves-and-horns of epic opener "Step By Step" and wild lead lines of sparkling workout "Dance of the Ymas", to the smoky, early morning goodness "Making Memories" and the hard-bop influenced "Activity", which features some virtuoso playing from both Gordon and saxophonist Roland Alexander.
