No One Around (4:36)
The Room (4:49)
Prophet Man (6:49)
Bad Boy (4:03)
The World Tonight (5:57)
The Tenant (4:12)
Review: Quite a number of techno fans will go weak at the knees when they spot this expansive collaboration between longtime friends and occasional studio partners Marcel Dettmann and Ben Klock. It's their first combined release since 2013. Both slabs of wax are full of high quality, atmospheric, late night techno workouts, from the creepy riffs and off-kilter drums of "Phantom Studies", and the horror-influenced post-dubstep shuffle of "The Room", to the raging, mind-altering dancefloor heaviness of "Bay Boy" and sparse, minimalist techno closer "The Tenant". Given their abilities as producers, we'd expect nothing less than superbly produced, club-ready cuts. Predictably, Phantom Studies delivers that in spades.

A Track Called Jinx
The Bottom Line
Pressure Dub
Review: Following rock solid entries from Ben Sims, Markus Suckut and Alan Fitzpatrick, Mosaic's Red Series continues apace in 2017 with a firing three-tracker from German scene stalwart Andre Kronert. "A Track Called Jinx" is a slow and nervy slice of bleepy techno that says a lot with the barest of ingredients. "The Bottom Line" is a more feisty concern, raising the tempo and the intensity without losing that loopy quality that shoots straight into the dark heart of the night. "Pressure Dub" represents the more experimental side of Kronert's output, using sparse materials to create a minimalist megalith.

Calirough (5:48)
Hyroglyph (9:07)
Wooden Words (6:45)
Monia (8:22)
Review: Hot on the heels of Tolouse Low Trax's first outing on celebrated Parisian label Antinote comes the follow-up Deacdes 2/3. The producer's distinctive musical voice - wayward, dystopian, and fearlessly experimental - seems particularly fitting given recent political events. Opener "Calirough", all sustained horror chords, distorted percussion and ghostly samples, is particularly potent, though the warped, metallic chug of "Hiroglyph" is not far behind. He returns to 4/4 pastures with the post-truth throb of "Wooden Words", before imagining a bleak future on the intense hum of "Monia", a typically dark and crunchy workout that's as chilling as a Donald Trump presidency.

Porcelain (Luca Agnelli remix) (7:55)
Go (Bart Skils remix) (9:10)
Review: Swedish techno megalith Drumcode has decided to breathe new life into the back catalogue of veteran New York producer Moby. This 12" is the first of four due in coming weeks, all of which boast fresh interpretations of classic tracks. On the A-side, Luca Angelli offers his take on "Porcelain", combining Moby's evocative chord progressions and twinkling pianos with banging new techno drums and stabbing electronics. Dutch DJ Bart Skills handles the B-side, offering a rolling, atmospheric version of "Go" that makes the most of Moby's stretched-out chords (themselves famously sampled from the Twin Peaks soundtrack).

Anvil Landing (6:29)
Snorkel (7:20)
Kabutops (Mascaras remix) (7:15)
Reflexivity (5:45)
Review: Following on from Kris Baha's killer turn, Australian label Power Station reach out to Disrute to keep their deviant disco wheels a-turning. This record marks the first proper outing for Disrute, and it's a strong opening statement. "Anvil Landing" is all plastic slap bass funk and heavy reverb, making for a dramatic dancefloor teaser, while "Snorkel" heads into moodier territory with prowling low end and a more driving composition. Mascaras remixes "Kabutops" and turns into a psych-out disco heater that Moroder would be proud of, before "Reflexivity" displays the breadth of Disrute's creative vision in fine style.

Review: Father & Sons has been a revelationary house and techno imprint over the past three years, and it's partly thanks to both the productions and general artistic direction of its founder and head, Spain's Julian Perez. The producer kicks off 2017 with a debut solo album, Solemnity, that spans all corners of the 'techno' sphere. From the slower, moodier waves of "Ain't That The Truth", or the subtle electro swings of "Xless", and even the rough dub techno of "Unusual Sense", there is something in here for all sorts of DJs to enjoy. While each track has a club sensibility, Perez manages to construct a subtle story through his diverse array of dance tracks.

Aftermath (Tuff City Kids remix) (6:51)
Recovery (6:49)
Review: Shedbug first started coming through last year with appearances on THRHNDRDSVNTNN and Of Paradise, and now kicks off the Flux label with an ear-catching EP loaded with hardcore references and contemporary techno flourishes. "Aftermath" is an immersive affair that lets the dense layers of synths do the talking while the dusty drum machine jacks away underneath. By way of contrast "Siren" is a riotous bassweight monster full of tumbling breaks and doomsday stabs. Tuff City Kids bring a cheery tone to "Aftermath" on their remix while injecting some of that distinctive ravey attitude into the mix, and then "Recovery" cools the EP down with languid ambience and delicate beats.

Tubes (8:14)
Tubes (live) (7:19)
Madcap (5:06)
Review: Italy is most certainly an underrated nation when it comes to house and techno. All across the country, kids of all ages were going mad for the stuff when it first hit the peninsula back in the late 80s, and with it came a whole wave of producers who have never really gotten much credit. Until now, that is. The Experience, a short-lived project from Andrea Benedetti and Eugenio Vatta, released one EP back in a hazy, E-fuelled 1992 entitled Tubes. Flash Forward have repressed here, and its three tunes way ahead of the rest in every way. "Tubes" sounds like it could have been made this year, both in terms of stylistic execution, choice of sounds, and playful balance between house and techno - an unmissable tune! The live version is almost better, stretching out the groove across 7 minutes of charging, cerebral techno, and "Madcap" does no harm to extend this deep, organic strain of dance music, guided further into oblivion thanks to the help of a few hidden semi-breaks. Warmly recommended.

Virgo Storm (7:13)
Virgo Storm (Adventice remix) (6:03)
Hypno (6:34)
Hypno (Mark Broom remix) (8:04)
Review: After a very quiet 2016, in which he released just one low-key, digital-only EP, Ilario Alicante returns with two no-holds-barred techno heaters. Title track "Virgo Storm" is particularly alluring, combining as it does bustling machine drums, melancholic melodies that seem to tumble across the soundspace, and just the right amount of subtle acid tweaks. Adventice turns that track into a straight-up, peak-time techno thrasher, before Alicante serves up a blistering chunk of bass-heavy, acid-flecked techno-funk ("Hypno"). British techno legend Mark Broom remixes that track, delivering an interpretation full of distorted drums, industrial textures, and razor-sharp acid lines.

My Mental Madness (6:30)
Chromoscope (6:34)
Megallanic Cloud (6:58)
Review: Italian in Berlin Saverio Celestri returns with more minimal electro that has seen him receive many accolades of late with releases on labels such as Slow Life and Batti Batti. "My Mantal Madenss" sees him work the signature boom and snap of an 808 beneath the metallic bleeps of FM synthesis and gloomy analogue pads. "Chromoscope" goes for something more fierce and breakneck, utilizing the same elements of the previous track into something more lively and reminiscent of early Dopplereffekt or Ultradyne. With that in mind, the final track on the flip entitled "Megallanic Cloud" continues on with some early Detroit aesthetics as well, channeling the spirit of early Model 500 rather impressively.

Ultraequinoctials (7:28)
Review: To date Ion Dumitrescu's Utopus project has only appeared on compilations, but now it scores the space in which to roam free across a whole EP that shines a light on this most promising of Romanian talents. P-Balans is the perfect place to house such wares, carrying the country's minimal love affair into intriguing new creative realms that deal in broken beat, electro and more outwardly experimental fare. "Southology" is a particularly fractured jam peppered with playful synths and tumbling drums, while "The Vision" takes on a shamanic techno stance. If you're craving propulsive tracks loaded with personality then hit up Utopus and you won't be disappointed.

Review: Underground Quality boss Jus Ed is beginning 2017 in fine fettle, with Transition - his first album since 2014 - heading up a spate of vinyl releases. The triple-vinyl set is full of evocative, immaculately produced deep house treats, from the Alton Miller style intricacy of "The Loop 222 Bodin Strasse" and shuffling, yearning "The Day Prince Died", to the rich bass and dancing drum machine hits of "Medellin My New Grooveland" (inspired, apparently, by a recent trip to Colombia), and the low-slung, Motor City grooves of "Sci-Fi Connection". Best of all, though, is the rushing positivity of "Spring is Near", where intertwining synth lines bubble away over a fizzing, techno-influenced rhythm track.

Eye Sight 1 (6:13)
Eye Sight 2 (7:04)
Review: You know Cari Lekebusch. You must have crossed paths with his timeless shades of house and techno over the years, in some form, and his consistent releasing schedule is further proof of this guy's eternal skills when it comes to dance music. Spear-heading Sweden's underground scene along with other notable artists like Adam Beyer, the man has given us endless streams of quality, the majority of which have come out on the excellent H Productions. He's back on the label now with a solid duo of bangers: "Eye Sight 1" muscles its way through the mix like a speeding bullet - a track that would easily be included in Berghain's soundtrack - while "Eye Sight 2" adds a little more bump to its groove thanks to the help of an intricate web of percussion hysteria. Solid.

Porcelain (Alan Fitzpatrick Late Night dub) (7:52)
Go (Tiger Stripes White Tail remix) (7:08)
Go (Tiger Stripes Black Lodge remix) (7:20)
Review: Following the release of his superb autobiography a year or two back - not to mention his recent "snub" of new U.S President Donald Trump - Moby has been back in the news. Crucially, his old records are making a return too, albeit in freshly remixed form. This third remix 12" from muscular Swedish techno types Drumcode boasts three more reworks of vintage floor-fillers. On the A-side, Alam Fitzpatrick re-imagines "Porcelain" as a Berlin style tech-house chugger, using Moby's original synths as a spine-tingling breakdown. On the flip, Tiger Stripes lays down two remixes of "Go". The 'White Tail Mix" is a thumping techno stomper with a buzzing breakdown, while the "Black Lodge Mix" is a bumpin' house re-shape.

Review: This 12" marks a new chapter in the ongoing story of Thomas Berg's 'Versions' stable. Having previously delivered mysterious 12" singles under the Analog Versions and Soundscape Versions titles, Berg now serves up the first installment in the Mystic Versions series. All four tracks are rooted in the smoky pulse of dub techno, but also offer subtle nods to acid house, deep house and more lo-fi, industrial-tinged fare. Our pick of the bunch is the more forthright closer ("Track 4"), which abandons dub-wise hypnotism in favour of pounding kick-drums and pleasingly creepy melody lines. That said tracks two and three are also top notch, too.

Symbiose (11:33)
Review: Berlin based Subjected may have a striking resemblance to David Guetta but musically he's very, very far from it! He's has been head of mysterious local imprint Vault Series, appearing alongside the likes of Sawlin, Moerbeck and the duo Mistake Made. A series of previously unreleased works appear here for Emmanuel's ARTS imprint, all as moody and as powerful as you'd expect from the man. Starting off on the A side with the tunneling hypnotic techno of "Waiting For Braids" which has earned him releases on Pole Group and it's no surprise when you hear this one. The pummelling, Berghain ready peak time assault "King Behemoth" was equally impressive, as was the 13 minute long epic on the flip titled "Symbiose", a noisy yet captivating sci-fi ambient epic featuring spacey arpeggios, dramatic symphonies and all round chilling sound design.
