Midnight In Havana (reissue)
Midnight In Havana (reissue) (white vinyl 7" limited to 200 copies)
Cat: OGR 799COLOUR. Rel: 04 Jan 21
  1. Midnight In Havana (5:18)
  2. Kinky Afro Cuban (4:53)
Review: Like all material released on Original Gravity, this tidy two-tracker from percussionist/band-leader Nestor Alvarezn and producer Neil Anderson sounds like it could have been recorded decades ago but is in fact brand new. It first appeared earlier in the year and has now been granted a second pressing, this time on coloured vinyl. A-side 'Midnight in Havana' is a heavyweight Afro-Cuban treat, with roaring horn lines and energetic organ lines leaping above a weighty, low-slung groove piled high with Latin percussion. The pair get cheeky on the flip, re-imagining Happy Mondays' classic 'Kinky Afro' in an easy listening salsa style, complete with bi-lingual lead vocals and sweltering trumpet solos.

Jazz Carnival: Space Jazz mix (Global Communication remix) (remastered)
Cat: JD 047. Rel: 10 Dec 20
  1. Jazz Carnival (LP mix) (8:59)
  2. Jazz Carnival (Space Jazz mix - Global Communication remix) (11:15)
Review: We hear on the grapevine that there could be some seriously desirable Global Communication vinyl reissues on the way in 2020. To tide us over until then, Far Out has decided to reissue one of the legendary West Country duo's most celebrated and sought-after remixes: their 1996 "Space Jazz" remix of Azymuth classic "Jazz Carnival". Pritchard and Middleton's version is a spacey deep house epic of intergalactic proportions, with subtle elements of the Brazilian band's loose and languid '90s re-recording of the track (the B-side "LP Mix") weaving in and out of a warm, rich and hypnotic groove. It's one of the most dancefloor-friendly of all Global Communication remixes - many were straight ambient or downtempo rubs - but also one of Mark Pritchard and Tom Middleton's finest.

Best & Remixed (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: ASTRO LTD3. Rel: 14 Dec 20
  1. Nigel Hayes & Rachel Berg - "Take me to the sea (John Beltran mix)" (4:53)
  2. C-Pull - "Soulmate (John Beltran remix)" (6:10)
  3. John Beltran - "Summer Storm (Nigel Hayes remix)" (6:56)
Review: The pointedly deep Astrolife label, run by Nigel Hayes and Vincent Inc, is taking things way, way down with this stunning 12" from John Beltran. It's a varied affair that leads in with the sumptuous, percussive house pattering of Beltran's remix of Hayes and Rachel Berg's 'Take Me To The Sea'. It's the kind of track that will transport you to dreamy, sun-soaked terraces in a flash. Beltran's version of C-Pull's 'Soulmate' is a very different affair - a peppy broken beat groover that wouldn't sound out of place being worked by the likes of Kaidi Thatham or Dego. Then Hayes is back, this time remixing Beltran's 'Summer Storm' and giving it a chunky rhythm section to carry the hazy melodics into peak time.

Review: Munich's Jazz & Milk label has now been releasing music for 15 years. As a result, founder Dusty is in a celebratory mood and has decided to offer-up this compilation style EP of previously unreleased treats from label artists old and new. Fusing organic and electronic instrumentation while fusing a myriad of interconnected styles, the EP's six tracks offer an excellent snapshot of the label's distinctive sound. Our picks include the sun-kissed Afro-South American fusion of Bongani Give Thanks' 'Indoda (African Reprise)', the bruk-up soul of Moe Fabrik's brilliant 'Sassy Boy', the intergalactic future soul shuffle of Steve Spacek's superb 'Do You Want My Love' and the sub-heavy Latin house percussion-fest that is Abase's excellent closing cut, 'Fallen Statues'.

Cat: FR 001BLACK. Rel: 21 Jan 21
  1. Tangerine Dreams (3:15)
  2. Two Mile Hill (3:09)
Review: Straight out of Bristol comes a brand-new label from Tom Friend, the avuncular vinyl obsessive behind the Friendly Records store and bar. The inaugural release on Friendly Recordings fittingly comes from a local talent, promising newcomer Claude Cooper. What's on offer very much taps into Bristol's post-punk history, with excellent A-side 'Tangerine Dreams' sounding like the sax-wielding mutant offspring of Rip, Rig & Panic and Maximum Joy - all bold, rubbery double bass, frenetic breakbeats and delay-laden horn solos. B-side 'Two Mile Hill', which was named in honour of a road in Bristol near Cooper's house, offers an extra-percussive and moodier variation on a similar theme. In a word: terrific!

Review: Emanative is an artist known for his love of collaborating with others. He has worked with Bex Burch during the lockdown and now this new EP is the meeting of those minds pressed to wax. Nick Emanative initially provided Bex with a hazy, 808 / African-inspired sketch and things were taken from there with a back and forth dialogue resulting in an afro tinged house groover with post punk-esque vocal, Ghanaian Gyil xylophone and synths and tape delay from Hector Plimmer. It makes for a fascinating pair of tunes.

Marilyn (12")
Cat: EGLO 013. Rel: 25 Nov 20
  1. Marylin (7:30)
  2. Farukx (6:34)
Review: Eglo continues to offer up choice reissues of killer cuts from the back catalogue of Sam Shepherd AKA Floating Points. The latest to get the treatment is 2011 12" Marilyn, which appeared at a time when Shepherd was just beginning to expand his sound palette following a few years of distinctively-swung deep house singles. The title track still boasts the distinctive, jammed-out synthesizer lead lines that were then a hallmark of his productions, as well as the shuffling house beats that we all love dearly, but also makes use of lots of extra percussion, Motor City-influenced chords and some sweet scat singing. Flipside 'Farukx' is a little more revolutionary, with the Eglo co-founder wrapping jazz-fired broken beats in drowsy chords, twinkling synth sounds and wavy female vocal snippets. Likethe A-side, it's one of Shepherd's best.

  3. Distant (5:04)
  4. Slam Deep (6:14)
  5. Channel & Transmission (2:00)
Review: For his first outing of 2020, Kyle Hall returns to the label he founded last year, Forget The Clock, with a suitably strong five-track missive. Check first languid opener "Shark", a splash around in crystal clear waters where simmering chords, luscious pads and glassy-eyed melodic motifs stretch out over bubbly, Latin-tinged drum machine beats and a dubby bassline. Hall makes bolder strides towards the dancefloor on lo-fi house cut "Vexed", before doffing a cap to Larry Heard and Ron Trent on the gorgeous deep house positivity of "Distant". Elsewhere, "Slam Deep" joins the dots between Steve Poindexter and the 2000 Black style of jazzy broken beat, while "Channel & Transmission" is a skewed skip through wonky deep house/jazz-funk fusion.

Review: Jarren hails from LA and brings plenty of the warmth and soul of that place to his music on this, the third rase from the already fine sounding Slices of A Dog. Mixing up deep house grooves, sultry sax from Jacob "JD" Crouch, oodles of g-funk and plenty of lush broken beats, this is a record that will bring heat to even the coldest winter night. Low-riding drums, cold analogue pops and hits and meandering top lines all take your mind away while the squelchy bass keeps your ass on the move. LA legend Bendek is the man bringing that on guitar, and label's co-founder Brothermartino on flutes also plays a key part.

  1. Jazz Salsa (5:10)
  2. Bahama Drama (6:19)
  3. Slums Drums (4:31)
Review: These new edits on Gamm prove that sometimes, less is more. Each the three scalpel jobs leaves the core part of the source track intact and then does a subtle job extending key bits and extracting the fluff. Krewcial is a master of this and here covers a wide range including jazz dance, Caribbean funk, ghetto styles and plenty in between. 'Jazz Salsa' is a playful number that flits about on nimble double bass while the impassioned sax leads, 'Bahama Drama' is straight up dance floor fire that pounds away relentlessly and 'Slums Drums' harks back to a raw 60s soul vibe with angular guitars and a vocal Mick Jagger would be proud of.

Review: California Soul queen Tiombe Lockhart returns to Mother Tongue with a special follow up to her The Aquarius Years album. Both tracks get special remix treatment, first up it is jazz man Christian Scoot who serves up a super pained, late night and spiritual remix where the beats are heavy hearted and the sax beautifully tragic. Intergalactic ace Carlos Nino then works with Nate Mercereau & Jamael Dean on the flip to make the tune into a steamy and sensuous neo-soul lullaby. The vocal harmonies are enough to send shivers down your spine.

Time Of The Season (Record Store Day Black Friday 2020)
  1. Time Of The Season (edit by Mr K) (7:41)
  2. Theme From Great Cities (edit by Mr K) (9:35)
Review: Reaching deep into the earliest foundations of his voluminous collection, Danny Krivit presents a psychedelic pop classic rearranged for today's sound systems and setlists. Recorded in the Beatles' Abbey Road studio at the height of the Summer Of Love, the Zombies' "Time Of The Season" is firmly linked in pop culture to the late '60s and the Vietnam era, although it almost never made it out to a wider audience. Ignored on its initial release, it was given a second chance by the label as the last gasp from a band that had officially split up a year before. This time around the song steadily gained fans and word-of-mouth plays in the U.S. and by the summer of 1969, two years after it had been recorded, "Time Of The Season" was ubiquitous and well on its way to being firmly enshrined as an emblem of the era.

Krivit's edit highlights the parade of lush sonic textures that ornament the hip composition, from the iconic, exquisitely echoed bass-clap-exhale riff that opens the song to the cascading Hammond organ solos of Rod Argent. Naturally, this MEU issue keeps the audio quality at its highest level, the better to appreciate these nuances. "It's a song from my childhood that really struck a chord," Danny says. "Over the years I often played a rough edit which always seemed to go over great. The song seemed to get better and better, and age like fine wine." We agree!

From flowers and incense, we move to glass and steel. "Theme For Great Cities" envelops us in a soaring, intense groove, as emblematic of the post-punk no wave style of 1981 as "Time of the Season" was to its own era. Produced by Gong's Steve Hillage, this futuristic instrumental is a bit like Bowie's wordless works with Eno, with an added downtown edge. "The original really struck me," Danny recalls, "especially at Roxy in the early '80s hip hop nights, on that Richard Long sound system... It really blew me away with its atmosphere!"

Danny's edit combines the lean and mean original with a trackier remixed version, cleanly lifting off on an epic ride that clocks in at nearly ten minutes. With the revised rhythm section and its quick-punched low end sandwiching the meat of the original's punishing drums and aggressive, picked bass line, Mr. K gives us the best of the expanded sonics of the remix without losing the atmospherics of the original take.

Review: The second release from the newly emerging If It Ain't Jazz label comes from Swedish producer Opolopo. For this one he takes two classics from the jazz-disco world and adds his own distinctive spins. The results soar into the stratosphere on golden chords and humid pads, funky drums and gliding grooves. Both are timeless reworks that will do plenty of damage on a wide range of dance floors. This marks another noteworthy release for this small but well formed label.

Review: Sound Signature's latest release is an all-star crew affair, with an impressive cast list of vocalists, musicians and producers joining main man Theo Parrish in the studio. He's at the controls on the sublime A-side mix, a jazzy affair where layered twinkling electric piano motifs, spacey chords, jazz-funk riffs and sumptuous deep house grooves combine on a fearlessly loose and organic dancefloor workout. On the flipside friend of the family Dego offers his interpretation, adding even more warmth and some tasty additional hand percussion parts whilst wisely utilizing most of the original version's intricate musical elements.

  2. On The Run (instrumental remix) (1:21)
  3. Remember Us (instrumental 7" edit) (2:18)
  4. Portisheadshop (2:25)
Review: If you're on the lookout for some hedonistic, party-starting fare, we'd highly recommend this bonus seven-inch from Ogogo's ongoing Oonop Drops series. The theme is "ruff cuts", with the Ruffcats setting the agenda on side A, joining forces with Allergies' mic man Andy Cooper for the jazzy funk breaks-meets-scratch-happy-hip-hop heaviness that is the Slick Walk remix of 'On The Run'. That comes accompanied on side A by a typically tight and heavy instrumental version. Over on the flip, 6th Generation take over with 'Remember Us', a jazzy, deep and bass-heavy instrumental hip-hop number of the type that Grand Central Records' used to champion, before Clockwerk and Birdmoves wrap things up via the smoky trip-hop head-nod that is 'Portisheadshop'.

  2. Itokori (Ryuhei The Man instrumental re-edit) (3:19)
Review: Prolific scalpel fiend Ryuhei The Man is capable of crafting quality re-edits of almost any style of music. His current obsession seems to be the collaborative work of Japanese pop singer Anna Sato and funk-fusion scene mainstay Toshiyuki Sasaki. The latest track from the pair to be given the Ryuhei treatment is 'Itokori', a vibrant and bustling affair that pits Sato's expressive vocals and heavenly instrumentation (she plays two traditional Japanese string instruments, the sanshin and shamisen) against Sasaki's high-octane, funk-fuelled jazz breaks. Ryuhei delivers two versions: a full vocal edit on side A, and a stripped-back but no less ear-catching flipside instrumental workout.

  3. It Ain't Working (Ashley Beedle NSW vocal) (6:58)
  4. EP (Rayka remix) (6:06)
Review: Those who cop digital downloads may already have come across these fine remixes of tracks from Smoove & Turrell's fantastic Stratos Bleu album, as they were released as part of an expansive set of reworks a couple of months ago. It's great that they've finally landed on wax though, because there's some genuine dancefloor gold amongst the four reworks on show. Our picks of the bunch are Ray Mang's sparkling, synth-laden, slightly dubbed-out disco revision of 'Do It', and Ashley Beedle's breezy, life-affirming old-school house take on 'It Ain't Working'. Elsewhere, Rayka wraps thrusting acid lines around bouncy, forthright beats on a surging revision of 'EP', while Fouk impresses with a cheerful piano-house version of 'Fade Away'.

Review: Thomas Xu's Steady Flight Circle cruises to a third release here and calls upon a fine band of talents to contribute one track each under the title of Friends & Mentors. He says of the EP "it features the gifts and talents of individuals who I look up to and honestly enjoy the company of." Terri Whodat kicks off with a heavily rooted and mid-tempo deep house track with a candle-lit vibe and gentle pianos while 'Saht Nam' is a cosmic affair with reflective chords over prickly beats. The flip side then gets super zoned out a dreamy with Meftah and jazzy tinged thanks to the great Rhodes work on '9th Creation.'

Review: The rightly acclaimed Thundercat put out his latest album It is What It Is on Flying Lotus's Brainfeeder earlier in the year. Now a lead single from it gets offered up as three different versions. The album version is a romantic track with mellifluous chords rippling over lo-fi and subtle drums while the vocals bring the vibes. The always on point Floating Points then reworks it for the dance floor with airy drums that float in mid air as the keys get a bit busier and the vocals remain in place to bring the soul. An instrumental and acappella mean all bases are covered.

Review: Celebrity BBQ Sauce may be a new name, but its' members - Gerald Mitchell and Billy Love - have long been members of the extended Underground Resistance family. They're both an established part of the Motor City music community, and their self-titled debut album for Moodymann's Mahogani Music is undeniably rooted in Detroit's ongoing musical story. Effortlessly soulful and musically rich, its' eight killer cuts various touch on Parliament/Funkadelic style P-Funk (the superb title track), up-tempo, slap-bass propelled '80s boogie ('Music is My Hustle'), warming deep house-soul ('Please Don't Fail Me'), beatdown (the sleazy brilliance of the Amp Fiddler-esque 'Formula of Passion'), and inspired fusions of all of the above ('Lifeline').

Review: The latest missive of Total Refreshment Centre's must-check in-house label brings together two male artists who have long been associated with the event space and studio, Danalogue (a producer best-known for his work with Snapped Ankles and the Comet is Coming) and spoken word artist and saxophonist Alabaster De Plume. As you'd perhaps expect, this collaborative album is intriguing and exciting in equal measure, with the pair offering up nine cosmic excursions that cannily combine the electronic and acoustic, cleverly joining the dots between hip-hop beat science, spiritual jazz, wonky electronica, mutant dancehall and new age synthesizer soundscapes.

Review: We've been waiting on this one since "J&W Beat" six years ago; there's something about Floating Points sound that instantly lends itself to full-length album immersion. It's clear he feels this way too; using the album to delve deeper into electronic deconstructions and delicate ensemble arrangements. At its most adventurous and contemporary classical "Argente" is up there with Frahm, at is dreamiest and jazz-influenced "For Marmish" is a deeply cosmic affair with disparate chords making more sense than they perhaps should. At its most traditional Floating Points we hit the finale "Perotation Six" where the brushed drums are buried under layers of sound and elements in a way that's not dissimilar to Radiohead. Well worth the wait.

Review: Horatio Luna is Melbourne composer, bassist and producer Henry Hicks. A key part of the city's vibrant jazz and broken beat scene, he has an inescapably funky ability to play bass and is founder of hip hop /soul collective 30/70, who have released on Rhythm Section here in the UK to great acclaim. This new album is focussed more on the dan floor than previous works but still displays plenty of virtuoso musical skills, with house grooves and jazz energy intertwining perfectly. 'Fuck The System' even adds rap verses, while 'Be Free' channels the spirt of funk legend Prince.

Review: When it first appeared digitally earlier in the year, DJ Spinna described Deborah Jordan's first album in nine years, See in the Dark, as an, "instant future classic". As it now lands on vinyl for the first time, we have to say we wholeheartedly agree with his assessment. Sitting somewhere between neo-soul, broken beat, nu-jazz and future R&B, the set sees Jordan deliver impeccable, effortlessly soulful performances of her own songs with the help of an impressive cast-list of musicians and a string quartet. Brilliant from start to finish, its multiple highlights include the slow and seductive shuffle of 'Stay With You', the piano ballad 'Fear', the stunning R&B brilliance of 'Machine' and effervescent bruk-up number 'You Should Know'.

Review: Given their shared musical heritage - both are members of the extended Firecracker Recordings crew - it's perhaps something of a surprise to find that Face The Facts marks the first serious collaboration between Linkwood and Gav 'Fudge Fingaz' Sutherland AKA Other Lands. It's less surprising that the album is really, really good. Touching on warming synth-boogie, head-nodding downtempo jams, mutant beatdown, Balearic beats, sunset-ready soundscapes and warming analogue deep house, the 13-track set is notable for the pair's extensive use of dusty old drum machines, tactile instrumentation (think smooth Rhodes solos, languid guitar solos and blissed-out synths) and Sutherland's hazy, sometimes seductive singing voice.

Review: Since they made their debut in 2012, Potatohead People's music has been championed by some serious players in the instrumental hip-hop and downtempo grooves community, most notably Nightmares on Wax, Phife Dawg and Big Boi. Listening to Mellow Fantasy, their third full-length and first in two years, it's easy to see why. From start to finish, the album lives up to the promise of its' title, with the Vancouver-based duo delivering rich and warming cuts that make extensive use of some seriously seductive and jazzy instrumentation. While rooted in hip-hop (there are a number of rap cuts scattered across the set), the album's genius lies in the Canadian twosome's ability to also turn their hand to jazz-funk, broken beat, P-funk flavoured soul, seductive slow jams and decidedly Balearic, synth-heavy soundscapes.
