Infrared (12")
Cat: HTH 107. Rel: 14 Jan 20
  1. Infrared (7:57)
  2. Tunnel Vision (8:25)
  3. Leisure Techno (6:21)
  4. The Good Old Days Are Tomorrow (5:06)
Review: Two years on from their Bedouin Records-released debut 12 "Aegis", Aquarian and Deapmash once again join forces as AQXDM for a follow-up on Houndstooth. Like its' predecessor, "Infrared" is hard to pigeonhole, with the pair mixing and mangling elements of industrial, electro, techno, breakbeat, experimental electronica and IDM into a quartet of wayward, full-throttle cuts. At times, this mix-and-match approach manifests itself as giddy 21st century hardcore (the rave-tastic, sub-powered insanity of "Leisure Techno") and mutant jungle ("The Good Old Days Are Tomorrow"), while at other points what you get is a much more bleak and cinematic feel (the two A-side cuts, which are superb but tough to accurately describe).

Extensions (140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HRM 003. Rel: 13 Jan 20
  1. Elevate (5:32)
  2. Toulouse (5:29)
  3. Employee (5:35)
  4. Refer (5:20)
Review: Following releases from Marquis Hawkes, Francis Harris and Hamatsuki, Georgia's Horoom label showcases some local talent. Gacha Bakradze is a rising talent on an international level, having recently appeared on Fever AM, but here he channels a sound that should find favour with fans of fellow Georgian talent HVL. Dubby atmospheres and snaking percussive rollers abound, with a hint of UK hardcore and jungle influence lurking in the middle distance but deployed with care. Subtlety is key here, as Bakradze unfurls immersive cuts with a restrained power to take the dancefloor to some truly transcendental places.

Love Life Stress & Setbacks (hand-stamped 12")
Cat: JERK 001. Rel: 15 Jan 20
  1. The Downfall Of Zanzibarland (4:25)
  2. And They All Look Like You (5:56)
  3. Workin (4:36)
  4. Crucifix (5:46)
Review: Newly formed label Jerk It (born out of Manchester) present Swedish maestro Bobo, co-founder of Bars of Beats which is so underground it ain't even on Discogs. Alongside his childhood friend Lars Tallberg, they bring to the table their first release: Love, Life, Stress & Setbacks. From the dreamy and evocative off kilter IDM of "The Downfall of Zanzibarland", to the majestic intro of "And They All Look Like You" which soon gives way to some furious rave energy on the flip: rolling junglist stepper in the form of "Workin'" and the hardcore zeitgeist of "Crucifix".

  1. Plastic Dreams (Nicole Moudaber Renaissance remix) (9:05)
  2. Plastic Dreams (Nicole Moudaber Passion Runs Deep remix) (7:53)
Review: Jaydee's Plastic Dreams is a stone cold classic of the dance music canon. It's a timeless, hard to define track with a real sense of darkness that also gets the club pumping. These days, Nicole Moudaber serves up similar styles, so is a wise choice to remix it. She does so for the legendary Renaissance label here, not once but twice. The original is a subtle variation that layers in a little modern bass weight and a somewhat tribal feel, while he second offering is a little more brave, with a broken beat and deep techno feel that still comes with the original's haunting synths.

Les Bois (12")
Cat: TESS 005. Rel: 09 Jan 20
  1. Les Bois (5:59)
  2. Katsu (5:32)
  3. Les Bois (Samo remix) (6:10)
  4. Les Bois (Tape Fear remix) (5:21)
Review: It's five up for London label Tessellate who hand over to T. Jacques for this slick mix of electro and golden era tech house. After recent EPs on J Steaw's House Puff and his own Nuances de Nuit, T.Jacques is in a fine run of form that continues here: "Les Bois" is hurried and squelchy cosmic funk while "Katsu" is built in crisp broken beats with sci-fi effects and thumping kicks making it both physical yet thoughtful. "Les Bois" becomes even more spaced out and astral with Samo's remix, while Tape Fear strips it down and rebuilds it as a swaggering bit of UK bass.
