  3. I (6:42)
  4. Sr (9:23)
Review: Since debuting in 2015, Yoshinori Hayashi has peddled his wares on a variety of labels, Jheri Tracks, Disco Halal and and Smalltown Supersound included. Here he returns to the latter label with a pleasingly heavy four-tracker. Opener "U" is an intergalactic electro workout laden with nasty, deep bass and glacial electronics, while "Cs" is a wonderfully lo-fi take on acid house that jacks harder than DJ Pierre after 24 cans of Red Bull. Over on the flip he layers ghostly vocal snippets, alien chords and rich bass over another jacking drum track on "I", before dropping some filthy analogue techno science on the sparse, spaced-out pulse of "Sr".

Cat: BBB 003. Rel: 18 May 20
  1. Show Me The Funk Breaks (instrumental) (3:47)
  2. Harder Breaks (instrumental) (4:08)
Review: The Atlanta based B Boy Breaks series continues with another drop of serious cuts to get beat jugglers, sample diggers and just straight up funk lovers going hog wild over the lashings of drum breaks. First up on the A side there's some widescreen, expansive beatdowns taking place with the massive "Show Me The Funk Breaks" - a fela esque sax screaching ,hammond organ swirling classic you already know from the many times it's been lifted for its treasured sonic ingredients. "Harder Breaks" on the flip is another monumental jam, presented here in instrumental form most recently used for the theme tune of a UK TV show . The evergreen groove is just crying out for someone with the skills to drop some serious turntablism all over this one.

  1. Verge Dub (4:32)
  2. Arklight Dub (6:36)
  3. Hannah's Theme (Bliss version) (9:17)
Review: Z Lovecraft (AKA Rhythm Section International family member Mali Baden-Powell) made his debut last year via an EP on No Bad Days that cheerfully joined the dots between acid, deep house, hip-hop and early hardcore style breakbeats. There's a far mellower feel to this three-track outing on Guru Meditation, even if breezy opener "Verge Dub" does underpin jammed-out electric piano chords and dreamy electronics with shuffling breakbeats and a bustling sub-bass motif. "Arklight Dub" joins the dots between dub techno and spacey deep house, while nine-minute B-side "Hannah's Theme (Bliss Version)" is the kind of fluid, exceptionally picturesque shuffler that could have come from the studio of one of Italy's leading dream house crews during the ambient house era.

Various EP (Part 2) (140 gram vinyl 12" + sticker & insert)
Cat: WSR VA2. Rel: 16 Mar 20
  1. Box 5ive - "Silicate" (6:39)
  2. Keppel - "Taken For Granted" (6:38)
  3. Henry Greenleaf - "Snide" (4:59)
  4. Formant Value - "Polycausa" (7:03)
Review: Well Street keep up the heat as one of the most inventive labels operating in the liminal space between techno, dub and rhythmic mysticism. These various artist releases are also a perfect introduction to some essential new talent, and that's clear from the off with the snaking, echo chamber pressure of Box 5ive. Keppel's "Taken For Granted" is a distinctive slice of crooked 21st century soul that sports a whiff of early Kimbie / Blake in the vocals and overall attitude. Henry Greenleaf's "Snide" is a taut drum track that teases as much as it delivers, and Formant Value trips out into a meditative soundscape of pattering percussion and spacious atmospherics.

  1. Sitting On The Bay Banger (4:17)
  2. Fire Cracker (3:33)
Review: Last year Breakbeat Paradise inaugurated the Toxic Funk series of mash-ups, reworks and party-starting sample jams via a tidy seven-inch single from BadboE and Tom Showtime. Here the series returns with a similarly fiery "45" from Edinburgh-based DJ/producer Gramophone Soul. On side A he smashes together elements from soul classic "Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay", Beastie Boys raps and bombastic, loose-limbed breakbeats. The results are as effective as you'd expect (IE it sounds like a bona fide party-starter). Turn to the flip for "Fire Cracker", a tooled-up, stomping soul affair that stays closer to its soulful source material whilst also re-framing it a little for contemporary dancefloors.

  6. Soreab - "AVP" (4:24)
Review: The XCPT Music label continues to establish itself as a go-to outlet for those who like freaky late night sounds. Like previous instalments of the Time Dance series, this various artists affair is a wild collisions of creative styles. There's the restless and kinetic techno malfunctions of "FB2THSN", deep drum patterns of "Amino Acid Side Chains" and footwork made of DJ Plant Texture's "Yeah Boy" on the first side alone. The flip goes hard and dark with the industrial bass of "Konnor 3012", frenzied electro of "Pirate Utopias" and dystopian sound-scaping that is "AVP" .

  2. Botwin - "Agostic" (6:07)
  3. Solar Sound System - "B16P15" (4:33)
  4. Nairless - "Blind Resistance" (6:11)
Review: Chat Noir is the official imprint of Paris' Chat Noir Distribution, and will be dedicated to all shades of house music. Their inaugural release "This Is A Story" features Jeff The Fool AKA Antoine Bermann, who has been polishing his house music skills for five years now - and it's paid off! His contribution with The Chaud Records partner Wilt is entitled "All I Need" and it rules the A side. This is exactly the kind of emotive and swing-fuelled deep house that we just adore - think E-Wax or Quality Vibe. On the flip we have some good ol' fashioned liquid drum 'n' bass in the spirit of legends like LTJ Bukem and Alex Reece on the roller "B16P15" by Solar Sound System (Aymeric) and closing it out with yet more diverse sounds is the acidified electro journey "Blind Resistance" by local head Nairless (Flying Structures).

  4. There's Hope For You Yet (6:27)
Review: Shedbug's slow but steady rise continues via an EP that's as thrilling and action-packed as a narcotics-fuelled weekend with a platoon of free party lunatics. There's a distinctively psychedelic feel to the retro-futurist club cuts on show, with bombastic opener "Aciidmuzik" - all effervescent hardcore style breakeat, psy-trance acid lines and fizzing electronics - being quickly followed by the hallucinatory ambient techno shuffle of "One Day Later". His devotion to the more LSD-inspired aspects of early '90s electronic music continues on the flip, where the exotic vocal samples, trippy electronic motifs and glassy-eyed melodies of breakbeat shuffler "Rubber" come paired with the sunrise-friendly bliss of the EP's most loved-up track, "There's Hope For You Yet".

Retro drum machine rhythms pump out some infectious acid grooves to go along with repeated vocal edits, classic analogue synths and funky acid basslines.

Review: The Incredible Bongo Band were a loose studio collective interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion .They are of course most famous for their ultimate b-boy classic version of "Apache". This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

  4. The Darkside (Exzakt bonus beat)
Review: Exceleration Records returns after a 4 year pause but they are back with a very strong 12" that combines the powers of Supreme.ja and Exzakt. Supreme.ja is a German electro veteran that has been releasing hot tracks since 1997. "The Darkside" is a driving very tightly fit electro number with solid beats, moving bassline, and smooth melodies. Next comes, "He's Waiting", which is a brilliant combination of old school breaks/progressive electro and hard electro beats. On Side B Exzakt takes things over with two remixes of "The Darkside". Signature Exzakt sounds all over this with parts of the original fit in just right. Bonus beats is an entire different track in a sense so lots of options on this 12".

Best for deep mix creativity or just looping up and vining out, DA reminds us one of life's most important mottos; if the drum track alone grabs you, the whole track will. Ranging from schizoid jungle business of "140 Ruffness" to the soul hurricane "Airy Break" and all fractured shades in between, there's a rhythm here with everyone's name on it. See how many cult reference points you can spot.

Review: Following on from the equally essential "The End Of" 12" released just recently on For Those That Knoe, Jaime Read is back in the spotlight with more cuts from his 1997 album "The End Of The Beginning". It makes sense then that this 12" is called "The Beginning", but the music is far from amateur material. This is elevated, evolved and exquisite deep house and techno that shows the depth and breadth the genres can reach when the machines are pushed into wild new territory. Just listen to the alien signals embedded in "Itty Bitty Pieces," a stunning electro workout that sounds unlike anything else. For any self-respecting fan of vintage UK house and techno, this release is unmissable.

Review: It's now accepted that label anniversary compilations and EPs should be stacked with high-grade cuts, preferably offered up by sizable or notable artists. Even so, there's something extra-special about this first part of Digbeth-based One Records' 10th anniversary EP series. Fittingly, it begins with a fresh cut from label stalwart Subb-an, a suitably heavy chunk of locked-in, early morning techno titled "Sunrise Mood", before continuing via the cut-up breakbeat fills, spacey electronics and warehouse-ready analogue bass of Adam Pits' "Pungent Method". Over on side B, Los Angeles-based Steve Urulu serves up the groovy, percussion-rich deep house/techno fusion of retro-futurist treat "Mollare Qualcuno", while Yamen & Eda drift their way through the deep breakbeat-house shuffle of "Last Dance".

  1. Stopouts - "Kill All Humans" (8:02)

  3. A2 - "Freaks" (5:02)
Review: Alien Recordings was born in the late 80's by Andy Panayi and Alec Stone, out of a love of music and DJing. They also ran a night around London called Alienation, playing a mix of house, electro, breakbeat and techno. They're back as (An) Alien with new material for your listening pleasure; alongside music by legend Terry Francis as well as Panayi and Stone themselves (A²), the likes of Stopouts (Rob Collman + Navigator) were staples of the imprint and they front up for "Tales From The Archives Part 2.2". There's the brooding Drexciyan electro funk of "Kill All Humans" originally from 1998, a remastered version of "Sandstorm" from their release on Robin Ball's Groovepressure imprint in 1999 and on the B side is the underwater cybernetic epic "Freaks" by A².

  2. Predators
Review: Bristol-based badman Borai has been quietly issuing some of the city's most immense club wreckers for many years now, sometimes in partnership with October, and sometimes flying solo (as on the crucial Anybody From London for Hotline Recordings). Here he's inaugurating Higher Level with some absolute dance slayers, kicking off with the mammoth pitched-down drum funk and gut-wrenching bass of "Razor" before switching stance for the dreamier but no less rowdy "Predators." Both cuts are a masterclass in classic breakbeat science, delivering the foundational UK sound with panache that sets these weapons far apart from the rest of the pack.

  2. You Are Me
Review: With two critically acclaimed albums to his name, Omid 16B is in the midst of creating a third! And whilst we await fulfillment through its fruits, here are two new prized productions providing a sweet taster of his forthcoming project. Omid's 'Psco' is an atmospheric, breaks driven beauty that seems to create its own impetus, soaring, swirling and dipping as freely as a bird in flight. An immense masterpiece sculpted from a sophisticated range of syncopated rhythms, it is saturated with the moody melodies and fierce 'Squelch Factor' of pulsating synthesisers, hypnotic key patterns and deep, growling sub-bass. With a subtle but captivating Giorgio Moroder/Midnight Express flavour, 'Psco' sounds like a fresh, electrifying soundtrack to a movie that is moving clubland. 'You Are Me', meanwhile, is a classic 16B production. A radiant metamorphosis of electronic funk, its inspired drum programming, sweeping synth patterns, crisp hi-hats and driving percussion all pave the way for a solid, uplifting 4/4 groove that is second to none. The breakdown is heavenly, honing in on cascading colours, piano melodies and infectious rhythms as the bubbling analogue-sounding bassline is dropped. Twisted, tweaked and filtered to perfection, the arrangement is achingly beautiful, its drama addictive. 100% pure16B productions, these tracks are guaranteed to move the crowds, play them loud!
