Review: French label Battle Weapons does it again here with another superb reissue of a dynamic fusion of vintage soul-jazz and catchy beats. They come from Hardly Subtle featuring Peggy Lee, whose iconic vocals soar over Hardly's masterful production to utterly alluring effect. The track pulsates with a gently infectious energy and infuses organic drums with modern electronic rhythms. It is a great one among many from Peggy Lee, and on the flipside you're treated to a superb Wonderlove edit of her sumptuous take on the Otis Reding classic 'Sittin On The Dock Of The Bay'.

Review: Two fresh names make a big splash in the still-strong UK hardcore scene. Coming to DJ Seduction's Burning Bush Communciations for an unlikely Florence And The Machine remix, we hear a breaks-backed version of 'You Got The Love' by DJ-X-Cess, but with re-recorded vocals that sound more to have been lifted from a passionate soul B-side than directly from the indie pop darling. It works very well, admittedly. Then also comes a remix of Ghost Unit's 'Air Cooled' by DJ X Cess, who adds to the original a wally, impossible-not-to-dance-to piano mix.

Review: Portland-based Aaron Carlson is AC$ and this is his third outing on the cult Sakskobing label. Once again he comes at house music from a unique vantage point and mixes up the rawness of Motor City hero Omar-S with the disco dalliances of Metro Area and the deep house of Berlin. His tunes are packed with character as well as funky drum patterns such as on the seductive lo-fi house of 'Patio Protocol'. 'No Jello' is a bumping Chicago house cut with nice frayed edges and 'The Big Black Slot' is cosmic tech house with soulful heart. EPs this fresh and classy don't come along often.

Since his arrival on the scene back in 2019, the Aussie producer's output has spanned diverse genres. There's four tracks featured on Wrong Way Out; he builds on earlier work with underground trap artists on opener 'Bangin On', the ketamine-laced electro of 'Static Effect' had us equally impressed as did the gnarly jungle deconstructions of 'Eyes Without A Face' and the brooding beat contortions of 'The Living Dead'.

Review: After first surfacing digitally late last year, Matisa's Steel City Dance Discs label debut finally makes it onto vinyl - and not a moment too soon. Hard to pigeonhole but fiendishly heavy and floor-friendly, the four cuts on offer are rave-igniting workouts that somehow manage to sound both nostalgic and genuinely fresh. For proof, check opener 'Brillatine', where a warped, all-action bassline, fizzing electronics, Orbital-style female vocal snippets, jumpy stabs and pots-and-pans percussion hits cluster around a skittish, warehouse-ready breakbeat. 'Eyeliner' is a slightly more rave-centric chunk of heady breakbeat hardcore revivalism with added M1 organ motifs (and a rap-less accompanying hip-house style tweak from label boss Mall Grab), while 'Lip Plumper' is a muscular, hands-aloft house workout with layered percussion aplenty.

Review: One Eye Witness is mostly known for doing reissues of treasured 90s breakbeat, techno and trance under the name Kalahari Oyster Cult but this outlet under their name is for new music. Similar to the previous, the fifth edition is a compilation with submissions from different artists around the world. Starting out the EP is the Montreal producer Priori with the very atmospheric 'Weight'. Those who follow the label, know that every release will get a bit of trance and sure enough, Eversines deliver with wicked 'Vigilance'. For the second side, the 'Bustlin' Monk' by O Fourtyfour, bounces along with a trippy, broken, electro groove. Lastly, 'J2PX' by Reflex Blue is a sick, robotic funker that we expect to get a lot of attention by those who get this record. You can always expect some excellent music from One Eye Witness.

Review: Bang on trend grooves from the Vivid camp, exploring the current fascination for all things that intersect both the garage and breaks genres. Lead track 'Wicked & Wild' is the one that leans furthest into UKG territory, its bumpy bassline and MC-style vocal giving it heaps of energy and attitude. Flip side instrumentals 'Push Past It' and 'Ronin' meanwhile, evoke the early 2000s spirit of breaksteppers such as Horsepower Productions, the latter especially maintaining the bassline pressure and adding it to the more hardcore vibe of rawer, sampled percussion. Review: It's still hard to keep up with all of Burnski's many different labels, but we're not complaining. This one, Constant Black, mixes up things with a tech and minimal twist and next to do so is Daniel Akbar. 'What' soon wins you over with its kinetic and infectious drum programming and smart samples - a phased vocal and a twisted synth lead. 'Retreat' gets more physical - the drums bang with an old-school flavour and hint of tribalism. 'Listen' is a big fat tech roller with low slung bass and 'This One' rounds out with some brilliant drum, hits and brain-frying bass sounds. Pow pow, what a record.

Review: Whether or not Lennie D'Ice's 'We Are I.E' was the tune that inspired the birth of jungle has long been a matter of debate. Regardless, it was certainly highly influential - a booming, sub-heavy breakbeat hardcore anthem that undoubtedly shifted the musical dial on its initial release in 1991. Here the freshly remastered original - sounding weightier and sharper than ever - is joined by a trio of 21st century interpretations. Solo and Blade kick things off with a crisply chopped and pleasingly rolling re-edit before Horsepower Productions brilliantly re-imagine it as a punchy and powerful breakstep smasher. Arguably best of all though is the take from Bristol's Borai, who brilliantly joins the dots between bassline, 4/4 UKG and saucer-eyed turn-of-the-90s house. Let me hear you scream!

Review: Heat Rock add yet another breaksy heater to their repertoire and, in so doing, welcome two wicked producers from across the pond into their roster; Altered Tapes from Chicago, and Double A from New Zealand. The former stalwart goes in on an infamous flute loop from The Beatnuts, working in phat kicks and sawn-off breakbeats for a pacier, dancier instrumental version. Double A backs this up on the B with, dedicating a prayer and an amen to the same Dirty South classic. A must-have DJ tool for the aspiring breaks-purveyor.

Review: From Ransom Note and Gestalt to Further Electronix, Placid One has been laying out an impressive repertoire of deep diving techno and electro steeped in the tropes of machine soul and rendered with a mature touch on the production. This double 12" for Altered Sense finds some breakbeat qualities slipping into the foundations of the tracks, albeit smudged under a heavy blanket of pads and woozy synth lines. There's an endless vista of harmonically enriched goodness to savour here - dance music with an emphasis on restoration rather than annihilation.

Review: While he might have come to attention exploring Fourth World percussion with Wolf Muller, Niklas Want has since proven himself to be equally happy indulging in full-tilt rave action, and that's exactly what he's up to on this fresh and fruity 12" for Warning. 'Die Glocke' is a rowdy, acid-tweaking breakbeat monster with some playful, braindance chords on top. Fantastic Twins then team up for a sweatier, techno-tooled remix of the track pitched squarely at strobe lit basements. 'Bodyzeit' finds Wandt indulging chunky piano stabs, Detroit synth orchestration and electro swagger, all adding up to a seriously fun kind of club wrecker, which Borusiade then simmers down to a smouldering, after hours roller for the smoke machine crew.

Review: RNBWS is given the honour of serving up the first-ever release on Dead Beat Records here. It is a fine statement of intent built on robust breakbeats ready for club deployment. 'Slow Moving' is not really, instead it's a turbocharged and bass heavy rhythm with menacing vocal snippets. '54321' has booming kicks and old school energy complete with some Beastie style vox. Review: 'Waiting For The Lights' was first released in 1992, and is a breakbeat heartbreaker in mono, marrying stuttering leads and bleepazoid melodies into a hissing stew. Mandalay's mix is a heavyweight remix, not shy of indulging in 'tribal' additions such as marimba and djembe. By far the best remix is the Thai Mix, adding the perfect amount of weight with a rollicking acid line. We'll only say this about 'Waiting For Champion Sound', the B4: it deserved to be more of a hit.

Review: Vinyl Fanatiks take it all the way back to 1993 with this reissued EP by Fruit & Veg. It has been fully remastered of the occasion and sounds as good now in terms of the fidelity, as well as the style, as it did 30+ years ago. 'Dark Enough?' is a nice heads-down and hardcore jungle roller with broad, menacing bass that booms out beneath the silky loops. Flip it over and '25%' again has some devastating amen breaks looped to infinity while more tripped melodies bring a darker rave edge to this one.

Review: Church co-head Seb Wildblood presents his latest release titled 'Vitara 3000', boasting three masterfully crafted tracks that effortlessly blend a nostalgic sound with broken beats and dreamy melodies. The EP, released via Istanbul-based label Oath, was a result of his new creative space in Los Angeles after moving from London. The high-energy tech house of 'Floor Science' kicks off the EP, while the slinky and hypnotic title track takes listeners on a blissful journey with euphoric vocals. Review: Don't be fooled by the name, Straatkunst is a French label but they're focused on street-ready electro and techno with a universal, global feel. Pechno steps up for the second release on the imprint with a pleasingly varied offering which kicks off with the pumped up 4/4 and reflective synth lines of 'Mobster'. 'No Time To Lose' is a rawer beatdown which lands somewhere in between OG Chicago house and slamming West Coast electro. Review: Twilight Expanse is the latest reissued EP from New York producer Ebeats, who originally released this great breaksy classic in the early noughties. A crude minimalist exploration in breaks and dub effects, we've got the ultra-wally zoner 'Helion', which is like a hyper-compressed version of an ambient Aphex perambulator, and the comparatively jazzy and surreal 'Twilight Expanse'. On the B also come remixes by Radioactive Man and Voicedrone, which are far less playful, but make up for it with a modern heat which still respects the original's direction.

This project allows the Russian artist to do what the hell he likes, however, as he digs deep across his influences and draws for some excellent samples and textures. The range is felt here instantly from the Derrick Carter-style bashes of 'DoDo' to the Kruder & Dorfmeister flavoured 'Dowsie'. These come from Paul Sitter and Crash Party who together cook up plenty of horn-lead action on 'Don't Touch Me.' It has old school bars and some retro synth work that all adds up to a full thrill funk banger. 'Wake Up' is another raw and raucous one with big rock guitars and slamming drums. Review: Nuremberg's Jayl Funk is a true torch-bearer for the art of funked up breaks to start a party anywhere and everywhere. He's back on Danish label Breakbeat Paradise with another sure-shot 7" of feel-good vocal grooves that should appeal to a huge spectrum of cats ready to get down, not least the A-side joint 'Shake & Boogie' with its infectiously sunny demeanour. 'Not Today' is a more disco-styled affair with snappy Philly string stabs and a slippery groove you could just sink your teeth into. Just watch out for that epic piano breakdown, it might just raise the roof off the joint.

This is another vital 45rpm for DJs which will blow up any spot with b-boy sounds and edgy breaks. Review: Dawl's music is nostalgic by design, with the producer frequently serving up singles, EPs and mini-albums that mine his love of turn-of-the-90s bleep & bass, body-popping electro, acid and breakbeat hardcore. On his latest Tone Dropout four tracker, he continues in this vein, with predictably entertaining results. He first peppers a TR-808 driven electro groove with gnarled synth syabs and intergalactic electronics on 'Total Annihilation', before opting for a more breathless, action packed and squelch-sporting electro flex on 'Infiltrator'. Over on side B, 'Kaotic' is a punchy acid-electro number with bonus bleeps, while 'Interception' pairs shuffling B-boy beats with all manner of mind-mangling motifs and hallucinatory acid tweaks.

Review: There's something truly remarkable about Depeche Mode's most eminent hit song 'Enjoy The Silence' - perhaps it boils down to the the quiet solitude of its central monarchic protagonist, coupled with the song's euphoric hook for horn and synth pluck. Just as well, this euphoria was bound to lend well to trance and breaks, a synergy first discovered by Mike Koglin and Tekara (Matt Darey) back in 1998. First out on Mutliply, 'The Silence' heard Koglin and Darey lend the original DM hit a pair of intense breaks-trance brightenings, repackaging the track for eccied dancefloors across the globe, in a nonethless honest and compelling fashion. This 25th Anniversary edition hears the remixes reissued and remastered, plus newer versions from James Zabiela and GMJ & Matter.

Review: Last year, hardcore and jungle archivists Vinyl Fanatiks dipped into the back catalogue of early 90s breakbeat heroes Rhythm Section - a crew whose members included future TCR main man Rennie Pilgrem - and offered up a 12" featuring the first four tracks from their 1995 double-pack The Sequel. Here they round up the rest of the tracks in remastered form. There's much to admire, from the warehouse-ready, 'Bombscare'-inspired melodic motifs, crunchy breaks and booming bass of 'Rhythm Is Fundamental' and the acidic squelchy of peak-time smasher 'Freakin' Out', to the hip-hop sampling breakbeat funkiness of 'Time To Hit The Floor' and the stab-happy, sub-heavy hedonism of 'Work That Body'.

This EP from Twostep2 captures the magic of that special time across three hefty and bass-driven new cuts that stay firmly entrenched in the underground sound. 'I Can't Let It Go' is a raw and jostling cut with metallic hits and a classic pitched-up r&b vocal. Review: The Incredible Bongo Band were a loose studio collective interpreting classics of the day in their own inimitable percussive fashion .They are of course most famous for their ultimate b-boy classic version of "Apache". This particular 7" however features two Incredible Bongo Band cuts that have not previously featured on any albums. "The Riot" is a frenetic drum workout and has been championed by the likes of the Chemical Brothers. "Ohkey Dokey (Part 2)" takes on a somewhat more subdued hue in comparison, but has some dope funky clavinet in the mix. Well worth checking.

Review: Three years in and Guachinche are proving themselves to be an essential outpost for UK hardcore and rave styles in Spain. Making their interests abundantly clear, their latest 12" is a VA affair simply titled The Rave. You know exactly what to expect from this release then, and DJ Rasco and Bubble Couple more than deliver on the rolling breakbeat and euphoric piano of 'Old Groove'. Suga7 mixes things up a little with some trancey elements folded into a deft, moody workout, while Mutantbreakz brings all the emotions to 'Keep It Up'. Raverman completes the set with a sound which is closer to the US big beat style of the late 90s, complete with some cyberpunk acid lines and a thread of mysticism in the breakdown. If you want big, bold rave styles, this record has got them in abundance.

Review: Returning from a brief hiatus, Spin Desire launches its third release and it is one dedicated to spotlighting talented artists who are currently flying under the radar. This time, they present Mculo, a UK-born, Berlin-based artist known for his versatile production skills. Mculo's four-track EP offers a deeper journey than previous releases, showcasing peak-time house, UK-infused breaks, hazy after-hours vibes, and a captivating downtempo finale. It's a nice journeying EP that is unified by its sense of crisp design and fresh rhythmic invention. A fantastic work from an emerging artist who we shall now very much keep an eye on.

Review: BEEYOU alumni Laidlaw is following up on the promise of his appearance on the SNDR001 record with this debut EP proper for the good folk at Gottwax. Anyone familiar with the Gottwood vibe will know what to expect, as house-oriented cuts with an open-minded palette criss-cross different tempos and moods to offer up fresh and playful gear for DJs who prefer their dance music with personality. 'Wait Til The End' is a cheeky tech house roller with an abundance of sparkling production touches, while 'Planet 727' slows down a touch and focuses on the percussion. On the flip, 'Prophecy' plays around with broken beats strapped to looming subs and 'That Was Well Quick' teases some 90s rave motifs chiseled into shape for the modern dancefloor.

Review: DJ Plant Texture aka Bari's Donato Basile makes a Return to Disorder with four blistering cuts of jungle, electro, techno and acid. He is a versatile producer who takes no prisoners and considers no sounds off-limits. This one kicks off with the brutalist beats and casuistic synths of 'The Other World' before funky, acid-laced techno bouncer 'Preserve The Rave' takes you to the next level. 'The Man Of The Street' (feat Mike Tansella Jr) is then a deeper, more cosmic cut with thinking synths but still plenty of powerful rhythms and last of all are the dark jungle breaks of 'Hasta La Vista, Baby.' These are highly charged and guaranteed dance floor destroyers from this ever-on-point wizard.

Review: Liquid Earth is an alias of new school underground house hero Urulu and he's dropped fine beats on Kalahari Oyster Cult, Butter Side up and Small Hours. He has also recently started his own self-titled label which is where he arrives now with four more fresh and well-infused cuts of spaced-out breaks, electro, house and minimal. This one starts with 'The Breakdown' (Charms Of Gaia mix) which has fast-paced trance-techno overtones. Review: As any keen breakbeat heads will know, DJ H's 'The Bass Project' EP came originally back in 1993 and is something of a classic in the genre. It is now getting reissued on nice heavyweight and pink marled vinyl in mad limited quantities but all mastered from a mint vinyl copy. The record infamously suffered from a questionable mixdown and so for this new reissue, the original samples have been re-sourced and layered over the restored files. Apparently, it took some 23 straight man-hours to get the work done - but it has paid off as these sound superb.

Review: The first vinyl release for Acid Boom, Vinyl Fanatiks 90s Acid label, The Acid Masters EP is a 4 track melting pot that has been lost for 30 years before being recently discovered on a tape. After only 3 test presses, the hand-stamped record is now doing a 250 copy limited run. An undeniable collector's piece, the slice of 90s UK acid is a time capsule of a lost scene with aspects of techno, house and breakcore especially on 'TD Time', a personal highlight. The EP has whimsical cuts like 'Start With You' and its Dial Tone beat but doesn't forsake the hallmarks of what made acid so great and counter-culture at the time. This piece is perfect for DJs and collectors alike looking for a hidden gem.

'Tangerine Train' first appeared on the tiny Aqua Boogie Records imprint in 1996 and in recent years has become something of an in-demand collectible. Review: Whatever you were expecting from an album named 'Superflous', forget it. An exploration into all the many paths of light that refract from the prism of house music, Bagarre commands the dancefloor with every track, placing specific emphasis on keys - a side of the genre that the mainstream has fallen out of love with in recent years. The silky smooth jazz house of 'Espirit Coubertin', a more classic NYC brand of vocal house (beset with 80s synth phrases) in 'Truman Flow' and a divulgence into some driving piano acid house with chopped up vocals in 'Annees Folles' to even a more modern, turn of the century approach with the big hit 'Eurovision' - I could go on. A wonderful and tight package, this LP almost feels like a compilation for how varied and versatile the tracks are. The packaging being one of the selling points of course, the carbon impact of the vinyl production promising to be compensated by a French organisation. You certainly don't have to feel bad about dancing to this now.
