Review: A Merle Travis blues standard, as laid down by the one and only BB King in 56. A homage to the coal miner with strong clear lyrics and vibrant horns, the original was one of many breakthrough's BB made in the 50s. It was also futureproofed for Belgium's popcorn sound with a bold brass version that's loaded with so much swing you almost forget its deep deep blues. Records like this are what 45s are made for.

Dance Monkey (3:35)
Review: Neo-soul chanteuse Bette Smith is an upcoming talent who lends her tones to the blistering blues guitar work of Kirk Flecther here. The pair take on a cover of The Rolling Stones' classic tune 'Brown Sugar' and do it with real gusto. The drums smash hard, the guitar riffs are big and angular and the vocals re delivered in sleazy fashion. The Tone's quirky pop dance hit 'Dance Monkey' then gets covered don the flip and turned into a psyched out bluesy guitar number with big vocals. It's a unique rework that makes this a collectible 7".

Poor Souls (4:51)
Marching Home (2:20)
Review: Better known as Johnny K, Ohio's Big John K was a vocal tour de force in the 50s/60s, playing with the likes of Ray Charles and recording a host of gems for indie labels that never had the funds to do his powerful dulcets justice. Gems like these. "Poor Souls" is a strike to the heart with a sword made of pure psychedelic blues. Gutsy, yearning and just the right side of cosmic, it's the reason why rare copies of this have gone for triple figures in the past. Flip for a more upbeat jam as Big John lays his stomp down with marching band energy. You'll be coming round the mountain in a jiffy the minute you hear this.

School Time (2:21)
Review: Chicago bluesman Billy Boy Arnold was already a decade into his lengthy career when he first recorded and released 'You're My Girl' on legendary jazz label Prestige Records' blues-focused offshoot, Bluesville. Here the record gets a deserved reissue, introducing a new generation to one of the singer-songwriter and harmonica player's greatest recordings. Wild, free, low-slung and deliciously groovy, the track's numerous neat musical details naturally include some superb harmonica solos from the man himself. He also blows up a storm on up-tempo blues B-side 'School Time', an undeniably heavier and more low-slung affair that's every bit as infectious as the A-side.

Voices Of Other Times (5:54)
Review: Dynamite Cuts have got another red hot bit of funk on their hands here with Brian Auger's Oblivion Express the subject of this reissue of two of his most blissed out sounds. The first is a magic cover of Marvin Gaye's timeless 'Inner City Blues' from his most iconic album, What's Going On. In this outfit's hands the groove becomes a little more deep and languid, with funky guitars and steamy vocals sinking you into a real romantic vibe. The second is an original tune, 'Voices Of Other Times,' that explores more uplifting soul vibes.

Review: One of the leading cuts from Tramps' Moments Vol 9 collection, Connie Kaye Trio's super rare "Woman" playfully riffs on Peggy Lee's "Fever" riff but comes with a completely subverted message and mood behind the lyrics and a powerful northern soul stomp. Strident, striking and full of drive, this special 45 release has been long overdue. Catch it while you can.

Blind Willie McTell (take 5 - Infidels outtake) (4:27)
Review: The 7" from Third Man Records features two previously-unreleased takes of the song 'Blind Willie McTell' with the a-side being totally exclusive to this Record Store Day Special. The b-side will also, in time, be included on Springtime In New York: The Bootleg Series, Vol. 16 (1980-1985). Session musicians Mark Knopfler, Mick Taylor, Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare all play on the tune which was the first one worked on during the Infidels album sessions. Bob Dylan's voice is at its whiny and idiosyncratic best here as his harmonica rings out, rolling drums set a slightly country-sousing groove and electric guitars flesh out the track.

Son! (2:48)
Review: Miami's Far Produce are fresh faces, but their sound is full of respect for times past, building on classic soul jazz by bringing it a modern instrumental twist. Led by two Studio City, CA natives - Addison Rifkind on guitar and Michael Duffy on drums - Fat Produce deliver a veritable cornucopia of fruits and groceries to chew on here. 7" A-sider 'Sticky Beets' turns our inners red, as we're led to imagine chowing down on the perfect beetroot yield and the funky euphoria that inevitably follows ingestion of such a delicacy. B-sider 'Son!', meanwhile, draws on an amalgamation of several Bay Area-inspired grooves - Duffy is a walking rhythmic encyclopaedia - set against an improvised, on-the-fly groove first laid down by Rifkind, whose hook-worthiness is unmistakable here.

Still As The Night (feat Andie Belle) (3:54)
Review: Long-faced Boston blues trio GA-20 deliver a swampy, bluesy take on Dolly Parton's classic, 'Jolene'. While the original Parton number's lyrics dealt in the instantly-memorable theme of a queen bee stealing the singer's beloved - "just because you can" - the original song could nonetheless be accused of obscuring the melancholic feel of the lyrics, by lending them an uptempo dance backing. GA-20 might be credited with fixing that problem here, stripping things back to a lilting blues plod, convincingly reworked into a vintage, boxy, sepia-toned context.

Review: It's hard to comprehend how significant it was when John Lee Hooker first recorded 'Boogie Chillen' in Detroit way, way back in 1948. Once the track was licensed to Modern Records, it went on to sell close to a million copies in the space of a year, at a time when recorded music was still finding its feet, and from that moment on Hooker's legendary status was confirmed until his death in 2001. Now Ace are commemorating 75 years since that landmark song was recorded, capturing two different takes of a track recorded by one man singing his honest truth and creating seismic shifts in popular culture, before such a thing even existed.

Review: Greg Jolly's 1981 jam 'It's Getting Sweeter' is the subject of this new tidy reissue on US label Enjoy. It's a real deep funk classic that has a lo-fi feel and vocals full of love and passion from both the male lead and the sweet female backers. The chords and drums are gently persuasive and it's a great way to ease yourself into an evening. This 45rpm is backed with 'Love Is' which picks up the pace and has a more funky and propulsive beat with acrobatic falsettos up top finishing it in style.

Curtis Baker & The Bravehearts - "Midnight In Memphis" (3:11)
Review: More nostalgic but on-point fare from producer Neil Anderson and his Original Gravity label, this time via an ultra-limited seven-inch single featuring two fuzzy slabs of revivalist rhythm and blues. The Labrats kick things off via a righteous and occasionally raucous cover of John Lee Hooker classic 'Boom Boom', where gnarled, Chuck Berry style guitar solos and gravelly vocals rise above a tooled-up but nevertheless faithful rendition of the much-loved song. Over on the flip, Curtis Baker and the Bravehearts breeze their way through a bluesy Anderson original, the slow-motion R&B grooves, razor-sharp blues guitars and extended organ solos of 'Midnight in Memphis'.

Her smoky tones come across these two stylish mod-jazz gems starting with the titular 'Sweetheart' which has lazy and slow motion grooves with some lovely reverb-heavy guitar lines reign out next to Jane's sensuous jazz delivery. On the flip is 'Loser' which has a more upbeat feel with 60s tones to the vocals as the swinging drums and feathery snares all add extra depth. A lovely 7" here for fans of all styles of soul.

Review: The Mdou Moctar mixtape series started in 2021. It is music made from sounds captured in the back of a van while on tour including field recordings, cell phone voice memos, interview clips, conversations and more. The Niger EPs now continue on that theme and look closely at the roots of the band, which lay in long bus rides across West Africa sitting next to people and talking about music. As such the music here is solely from recordings in Mdou Moctar's home country of Niger between 2017 and 2020 when the band was at weddings, picnics, rehearsals, and impromptu house concerts.

Review: Mdou Moctar is a Tuareg, Niger musician best known for his personal sound; he calls it Tuareg guitar music, drawing on styles like takamba and assouf. His music was originally circulated not via the internet, but rather an informal trade network of memory sticks and mobile phones in the Sahel region of North Africa. This musical scarcity captured the imagination of the net-based musical audience at large, following Moctar's formation of a four-piece band and emergent touring schedule aided by motorcycle, not to mention his demo music being leaked on a compilation documenting the cellphone based music of the Sahel in the early 2010s. 'Niger EP. Vol. 2' tops up the artist's latest EP series, laying down a further four entrancingly electric songs recorded at various weddings, picnics and house concerts.

As covered by the likes of Lou Rawls, "Ain't That Loving You" is heartfelt bluesy ballad with a sultry swagger and serious yearning on the choruses while the even rarer "Blues In The Night" closes the B on a super-tight floor-bound riff and gutsy delivery from Taylor. Both bonafide northern soul classics and confirmed rarities with both cuts regularly fetching triple figures, this reissue changes everything. For more reasons than one.

With vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik taking centre stage (Chizhik isn't usually a member of the band), 'Village Hassle' makes for a cleverly collaborative rare groove and instrumental reggae-soul release. The titular A-side flaunts Chizhik's vibraphone via the mix alone, fleshing out its low-end elements against a driven instrumental backbeat; 'Monthly Rainfall', meanwhile, goes for all-out slow-jammed soul by way of cross-sticked snares and offbeat chord plucks run through short-release springs.

In an unconventional move, vibraphonist Pavel Chizhik takes the spotlight and the result is that he truly enhances the band's signature sound. But Keep It Hid is no straight clone of the 'Keys sound, as Auerbach leans in on a scratchy, scuzzy solo outlet for his songwriting. The title track is a sluggish end of the night bar prop, while 'Heartbroken, In Disrepair' doubles down on tripped-out tremolo for a more psychedelic affair than you might normally associate with Auerbach's better-known work. It's a knockout slice of dirty south blues rock given a shot of something spicy - and now it's being repressed as a limited orange and black vinyl with a bonus insert.

The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. The Black Crowes have never been ones to hide their inspirations. The classically-styled US blues rockers have turned their hands to plenty of covers over the years, and this time they're offering up a short album's worth of renditions under the banner of 1972. The year doesn't so much nod to the songs specifically as the feeling, and a particular era of sound they were aiming for. Given their skin in the game, it's no surprise to hear them nail the likes of 'Rocks Off' and 'Papa Was A Rolling Stone', paying homage and doing their own thing in equal measure.

Review: Atlanta blues-rock figureheads The Black Crowes were one of the most exciting and influential jam bands of the 1990s, with a sound that blended classic rock, blues, and soul into a fervent cocktail. Shake Your Money Maker: Live captures the band during their reunion tour embarked upon in 2021-22, tearing through a set of hits, covers and deep cuts with raw power and swagger - and with no loss of energy or talent. A special live video of the grumbly fan favourite 'Twice As Hard' comes in tandem with this gargantuan live album.

Review: American blues-slanted rock band the Black Crowes put out their second album The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion back in May 1992. It was the first time Marc Ford had featured on lead guitar in place of Jeff Cease who was sacked the year before. It also marked the first time Eddie Harsch joined on keys and set a record at the time for being the first album to feature four rock number ones, and the album itself also climbed to the top spot in the Billboard 200 album chart. Its mix of blues and Southern styles often sees the album being included in lists of the best rock albums of all time.

Review: 15 years. A decade and a half. That's how long it has been since we heard from The Black Crowes. And by God it's good to have them back. Formed in Georgia, circa 1984, the group have spent the decades since building up the kind of cult following bands dream of, managing varying degrees of success on the album front - from commercial under-performance to chart toppers (The Southern Harmony and Musical Companion, for example) - but consistently putting out top music and performing incredible shows. Happiness Bastards, already up there with the best album titles 2024 will see, is a fitting return straight to form, then. An LP packed with the roots and blues influenced, hard-edged rock & roll disciples know these guys for. Each track has the potential to raise the roof of any venue they'll hopefully be gracing in the near future. Or indeed tear the ceiling off completely.

Review: The southern rock back from Georgia, The Black Crowes saw huge success in the early 90s with multi-platinum success and even a number one album in America in mid-1992. They've been through a few ups and down since, and here comes their first album in over 15 years. It's their tenth overall, with this vinyl version coming on 180gram from Silver Arrows records, and with a world tour also pending, Black Crowes fans will be filling their proverbial boots in 2024.

Summertime Blues (4:34)
Review: There are moments in the spellbinding and often criminally overlooked Blue Cheer anthem, 'Summertime Blues', when it feels like we've descended into the depths of industrial guitar chaos. A cacophony of feedback, growls, and low, rumbling refrains. A pithy reinterpretation of Eddie Cochran's 1958 hit single, here rendered obtuse for the second, decidedly less-radio and commercial-friendly rock 'n' roll generation.

The whole version plays out in a way that's much like we can imagine Jimi Hendrix might have made happen. Grizzled, gritty, fraught and, ultimately, very loud indeed. It's a standout on this triple-A-side of 1967 Blue Cheer demos, three tracks committed to the pantheons when the psychedelic blues and acid rockers were first beginning to focus their energies. But while the aforementioned is the main event, everything here shows why there was so much excitement around them in the first place.

This one, The Ballad of John Henry, is a firm fan favourite from back in 2009 that lands, for the first time, on coloured vinyl. It has been remastered to heavyweight wax for the occasion and includes the bonus track, B.B. King's 'Chains and Things' as well as plenty of original and covers of the likes of Tom Waits and Sam Brown. Joe's seventh album provided the giant of the genre with another US Billboard Blues #1 and made him plenty of new fans across Europe.

Review: Joe Bonamassa delivers a fresh, bluesy sound with Tales of Time, the live album version of the revered guitarist's most recent LP Time Clocks. Performing the album in full at the Red Rocks Ampitheatre last year - the recordings from which formed the basis of this LP - this is a solid example of a performer rapturously taking in the beauty of his interior surroundings, translating into ever-more impressive guitar work and vocal delivery. Containing classic blues influences but with a contemporary flair, this curveball will please Bonamassa fans old and new.

Review: Two deacdes after volume one, we finally get Joe Bonamassa's Blues Deluxe follow up. Something of a self-test, with which he wants to judge how far his music has progressed in the past two decades, producer Josh Smith has again been drafted for studio duties, and apparently set out to present fans of this blues rock & roll icon with "a complete natural, relaxed Joe". Few could ask for much more, and nobody could deny that's one of the overriding vibes exuding from these tracks. Which isn't to say Bonamassa has paled or become any less intense and muscular in his approach to songwriting and craft. Fear not, then, there are some epic solos happening all over the place here, invoking the spirit of John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, or Eric Clapton during the heyday of Cream. Perhaps more an extension than evolution, then, the takeaway point must therefore be that the recipe has and always will work incredibly well.

His solo career kicked off in earnest in 2000, and his third album Blues Deluxe arrived in 2003. It gathers together nine covers of blues standards, covering the likes of John Lee Hooker, Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy and Robert Johnson as well as presenting three of his own original compositions. It's a high-end, polished take on the blues rock sound presented by a lifelong devotee, now remastered and repressed on double vinyl.

Review: Joe Bonamassa's name hangs with the weight of authority. One of the finest blues guitarists not to win a Grammy (yet), over the last 30 years his reputation among the rock 'n' roll community has grown from young upstart (getting his first big break at the age of 13 opening for B.B. King) to living legend; a guy who once looked up to the greats, and is now considered among them.

This is LP number 16, discounting live albums, and it's another guitar education. Recorded at Abbey Road, the album looks to celebrate the 1960s British blues explosion with a set of tracks raw enough to have been laid down then, drawing heavily on the genre's US birthplace, while owing some debt to Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton. But it's not emulating that formative era UK homegrown. Instead, it's the culmination of a sound over half a century in the making.

Review: Country and folk fans alike take heed - Muireann Bradley is a startling new talent in country and bluegrass from County Donegal in Ireland. I Kept These Old Blues absolutely calls back to a golden age of Americana, but Bradley's Irish lilt comes through and entwines with her faithful Southern twang to make for an endlessly charming end result. Her playing is pitch-perfect, stripped to the bone finger-picking all the better to savour the songs and the way they're sung. Don't sleep on this limited coloured vinyl edition of this rough diamond of an album.

Through haunting vocals and poetic lyrics, Brahim shares stories of displacement, longing, and hope, drawing from her experiences as a Sahrawi refugee. Backed by hypnotic rhythms, intricate melodies, and soul-stirring instrumentation, each track creates a rich tapestry of sound which means the record is more than just an album; it's a powerful testament to the human spirit and a poignant reminder of the ongoing struggle for freedom and justice. Brahim's music resonates deeply, transcending borders and connecting hearts across the globe.

Review: Brian Auger's Oblivion Express was the phoenix that rose from the ashes of sixties combo The Trinity. Fusing R&B, jazz, soul and funk, keyboard maestro Brian Auger created a new breed of music that took the US and the UK by storm. Auger's unique experimentation culminated in rhythm-infused jazz funk that united black and white '70s audiences. The 6 studio albums that make up Complete Oblivion illustrate the group's diverse musical influences and progression, from the 1970 self titled debut's heavy jazz-rock to the jazz fusion, Latin and disco-tinged Reinforcements from 1975 - this process no doubt powered by the group's evolving line up, which included guitarists Jim Mullen and Jack Mills, drummers Robbie McIntosh & Steve Ferrone, bassists Barry Dean and Clive Chaman and vocalist Alex Ligertwood.

The guitarist's 1967 Impulse! debut is said to be one of the funkiest and most original the late ever put out. His signature picking style is clean and bluesy and was honed while he played with legends like John Lee Hooker's and T-Bone Walker's bands. There is also plenty of well swung soul-jazz in the great organ work and for this version the original audio has been transferred from the analog tapes to nice heavy vinyl.

The redemption songs truly hit deep and different and the authoritative vocal turns leave you in awe from front to back. The album is a payback for all the inspiration Brown has taken from Jackson's work, and first came to mind when she was singing on the Roxy Music reunion tour all the way back in 2000. It might have been a long time coming, but the wait was worth it.

Review: Buffalo Nichols arrives on our radar as a fully-fledged artist making a striking impression on his debut album for Fat Possum Records. His sound is steeped in the blues - a mesmerising swirl of finger-picking, barre chords and bottlenecks - and his voice matches the setting as a dusky narrator with a necessary crack around the edges to make sure you feel what he's singing. For the tradition inherent in his music, Nichols comes across modern and relevant as he sings and plays. These are hard-bitten ballads with stories to tell and messages to convey, the work of a bold new talent in blues.

Now it looks to his KB Blues album which came a year later and was his third session as a Blue Note label leader in the studio of legendary producer Rudy Van Gelder in New Jersey. His signature playing style comes to the fore with Horace Silver on piano, Hank Mobley on tenor saxophone, Doug Watkins on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. Review: Peaky Blinders is a saga that will live on in British cultural folklore long after people stop streaming the show itself. And the legacy of arguably the coolest show to come out of the UK in several years is as much to do with the contemporary stylisation of what's essentially a period piece as it is the attitude it exudes. An atmosphere that's distinctly British, to say the least. A key aspect of the overall impact is the soundtrack, and who better to craft the score to this dark, violent, socially-imbalanced, politically-volatile period in English gangster history than Anna Calvi. The high priestess of alternative, brooding, tense rock & roll plucked straight from the depths of surrealism, every pluck and chord seems to intensify the overall feeling, seducing us with a combination of breathy spoken word, operatic contralto, and tense virtuoso guitar playing.
