  4. Jupiter (with Guava) (6:29)
Review: Breaka, who co-founded Leeds workout party Stretchy Dance Supply, uses the first release on his own new label to show the many different sides to his sound. "Icy Grills" is first up and pings 808s, drum breaks and claps doused in reverb aloud the mix to rousing effect, while "Stretch 130" is all broken beats, gun shot hits and hands in the air pianos. "Apricot Cocktails" might be the standout with joyous, heart felt vibes thanks to great beat work and a standout vocal work by Lydia Kotsirea. "Jupiter" (with Guava) then serves up bass that is brilliantly bendy and elastic to round out a fresh first release.

  3. Septieme Seur (5:19)
  4. Bloodline (6:40)
Review: Sweeping up the demolition caused by his E-Fax EP as SENATE (with fellow Melbourne beat meddler Carmel), Consulate returns to Bitterfield with four remarkable fractured departures. Techno in spirit, breaks in a physical sense, there's a persistency and urgent loopiness running throughout on each track. That stabby chant on "Largs", those "Pulse-X" style depth plunge bass tones on "Trench Gun", and the rifle-like snare roll on the much deeper, mournful and almost Orbitalesque "Septieme Seur" are all fine examples. But for the most urgent, persistent experience of the EP he's saved the darkest jam for last; "Bloodline", a gritty, stern jungle piece that opens up into an almighty breakbeat crescendo right when you least expect it. Don't be bitter, be Bitterfield.

  4. Bashment Juice (Horsepower remix) (4:57)
Review: Firstly, props to Denham Audio for naming his track "Bashment Juice". Secondly; this bangs! Clunky-assed breakbeats with more swagger than an army of Jaggers, there's a heavy 91 kick to the mix but with 2020 weight. Thirdly; it's backed with two other superb rave pieces; Rider Shafique joins the party on the heads-down dubby rollage of "Ever Fearless" and "Saltfish Patty" strips things back to bare bruk and a blunt bassline that bounces like a wrecking ball. Fourthly; it comes with a savage Horsepower remix. Get juiced up.

  8. Afterlife (2:49)
Review: Over the course of his career to date, shadowy London producer Filter Dread has proved to be one bass music's most imaginative producers, offering up a range of EPs that snugly sit in the cracks between sub-genres. On "Ice Rave", his debut album, he continues this approach, romping through a collection of weighty, club-ready cuts that variously touch on dancehall/140 fusion ("Ice B8ass"), eight-bit electro ("Space Conga"), mind-altering post-grime intensity ("Time To Let Go"), hybrid hardcore/dubstep insanity ("Ice Rave") and mutant tech-funk (the skittish and doom-laden "Tekker Wave"). In other words, it's a sub-heavy sprint just overflowing with ideas.

HMZ 005 (Demdike Stare RMX) (limited to 300 copies 140 gram vinyl 12")
Cat: HMZ 005. Rel: 11 Nov 19
  1. GOJI (6:10)
  2. GOJI (Demdike Stare Hypersensitive World remix) (6:37)
Review: After a strong and distinctive run of outsider electronics from artists like Meze, Plants Army Revolver and Nicolo, HomeMadeZucchero founder Giesse steps up to the plate with a deadly concoction that uses breakneck drum programming to whip up a feeling somewhere between technical jungle and hyper-modern dubstep. Where "GOJI" is all sharp angles and bold sound design, the mighty Demdike Stare are on hand to deliver a remix that shirks convention (would you expect any less?) by barreling into a noise-caked tunnel of intensity that opens out into a fractured breakbeat meditation broken up with flamboyant handbrake turns to keep the dancers on their toes.

  4. Triangle (4:53)
  5. No Team (feat Lorn) (4:44)
Review: Following releases and appearances on Astrophonica, Rua Sound and None60 the incredibly talented Lewis James makes his Exit debut with this remarkable five track EP. If you've followed his previous, you'll know how untypical, exciting and disarmingly deep and emotive this music is before you even press play. Highlights include the heart-hugging soul of "Worth The Pain" with Danish singer Alia Fresco (who you will recognise from dBridge and Kid Drama releases in the past) the stalking beat punctuation and tension of "Acidize" (with the bossman dBridge on collaborative assist) and the genuinely epic, bittersweet finale "No Team", a collaboration with none other than Lorn! Everything about this EP has been executed with thought, detail and soul. No one does things like Lewis or indeed Exit. Beautiful.

  6. Muzikon 90 (2:39)
Review: Man of many aliases, Patrick Conway makes his debut on Sneaker Social Club with six disarming rave echoes that sound just as much 2091 as they do 1991. All the ingredients are familiar but are cooked so refreshingly in a piping hot dub oven, they sound like something completely fresh. Highlights include the grime-meets-hardcore-meets-double-dragon-scrap vibes of the title track, the ghostly breaks and pressurised pads of "Muzikon 90" and the spacious, almost UK funky style drum work and classic vocal sample of "Signal To Noise". Sneaker Social Club are always well ahead of the curve but this is a whole new venn diagram. Essential.

No Past Lives (heavyweight white vinyl 12")
Cat: MLEP 007. Rel: 19 Nov 19
  1. No Past Lives (4:59)
  2. Strangeloop (5:20)
  3. Seek Refuge (5:03)
  4. What Is This Place? (feat Yunis) (3:39)
Review: With releases on the likes of Saturate, Alpha Pup and Plasma, it was only a matter of time before Zachariah Alderson landed a Mad Zach EP on Methlab. "No Past Lives" leaves you under no illusion about Zach's abilities or the whole mission of the EP. Fast-paced, cosmic, layered in melodic lines, sinewy acid lines and a dark sense of hope you'd imagine Future Sound Of London conjuring, had they come 30 years later. "Strangeloop" is a little more introverted in its nature but gradually rises in tension and tone throughout while "Seek Refuge" is an electrified snake writhing and craning out of its hole, spitting pure voltage at anyone in a five mile radius. Finally long-time friend and collaborator Yunis joins the fray for closing track "What Is This Place?". A different tempo and tone but still the same message; Zach builds musical universes that take time to explore. See you in the next life... Not.

Review: Skee Mask, who only recently was found out to be called Bryan Muller, comes through with his second LP to date, making a wonderful follow-up to 2016's Shred. Compro is, ironically, comprised of a much more explorative palette of sounds, with many corners of the album veering off into otherworldly ambient, often through a striking new-age sensibility. The most impressive element of this album is its flow and evolution across its 12 tracks, sounding a lot more like one single-minded thought rather than a collection of disparate dance-not-dance tunes. The quality of the recording is noticeable, too, with tracks like "Rev8617" or "Via Sub Mids" sounding professional, both in vision and style. Through an intricate collage of breaks, samples, polyphonies, and subtle electronic manipulations, Skee Mask has truly mastered his own art, and is giving a new direction to the wider 'UK rave' sound. BIG.

Review: Canadian producer Levi Bruce (aka Unknown Mobile) has contributed to several North American labels in recent times such as Young Adults, Normals Welcome and Pacific Rhythm, but this one for hometown heroes Planet Euphorique could be one of his most promising efforts yet. Of the five tracks featured here on "Mobile Sorcery", we were captivated by the off-kilter falling acid of "Broke Melt", the post-UK bass street sound mutations of "Sorcery", and hypnotic B side cut "Heavenly Depression" which goes into a tribal trance.

Review: For those not in the know, Vegyn is an artistic alias of Joe Thornalley, a producer who has previously worked with none other than Frank Ocean. "Only Diamonds Cut Diamonds" is his second album and arrives four years on from the release of his inspired debut full-length, "All Bad Things Have Ended - Your Lunch Included". It's a hugely alluring affair, with Thornalley offering up melodious, ear pleasing cuts that variously mix and match smooth 1980s FM synth sounds, crunchy MPC-driven beats, drowsy chords, eccentric electronics, dusty lo-fi noise, whistling, fretless bass, rap vocals and occasional jaunts into mangled electronica territory. It's presented like a beat-maker's mix-tape and that's exactly what it is: the best mixtape of unheard, off-kilter music you'll have heard this year.
