Review: Swedish dark jazzers Tonbruket share their sixth studio album Light Wood, Dark Strings. For a band as diverse as Tonbruket, who’ve garnered a rep as diligent explorers of the outback of jazz, it is hardly surprising that we once again hear a novel expansion of the genre’s normative boundaries. Unlike their previous five albums (all on ACT), which are heavy on the synths and effects pedals, Light Wood, Dark Strings is almost completely “organic”, preferring lighter, but full-bodied acoustics. Their lowest-key, softest record so far, Berglund, Hederos, Lindström and Werliin have done it again.
