Baris K - "Chapter I" (11:20)
Valentin Stip - "Chapter II" (6:38)
Volkan Akin - "Chapter III" (13:44)
Tim Karbon - "Chapter IV" (8:43)
Review: Vox Populi Records head Frederic Scharf travelled to Turkey on an eight day trip. His team collected live recordings, jam sessions and field recordings and here are the results of it. Istanbul producer Baris K is up first with a truly majestic track that is "Chapter I" sounding like something Ricardo Villalobos would stand up and notice. Montreal's Valentin Stip appears on the same side of the record with "Chapter II" utilising more of the lovely exotic instrumentation incorporated into a smooth minimal house excursion. On the flip "Chapter III" by Berlin's Volkan Akin is the real standout on here; a percussion driven workout taking in the sounds of a busy street market, allowing you to imagine yourself on a motorcycle ride through the city. Finally "Chapter IV" from Tim Karbon gets its groove on in a nice rolling fashion complete with emotive strings and tripped out samples that will easily work a peak time dancefloor.

Field Works Vol II

Japan Blues - "Chapter V" (5:49)
Tim Karbon - "Chapter VI" (6:04)
Hiroaki Oba - "Chapter VII" (6:12)
Shizka - "Chapter VIII" (4:16)
Review: Vox Populi's Field Works Vol.II sees the Berlin based label travelling to different parts of the world in order to collect sounds and archive some of the finest musical traditions. This record is the result of a trip to Japan led by Swiss anthropologist and label founder Fred Scharf. It was inspired by academic methods: particularly ethnomusicology and incorporates everything from field recordings, studio recordings, religious rituals, fighting championships and even wedding ceremonies. From the slo-mo acid of Japan Blues (Berceuse Heroique) seductive "Chapter V" to Frenchman Tim Karbon's exotic polythyrhms that hypnotise you on "Chapter VI" and Shizka (aka Inoue Shirabe) getting into some abstract groove theory on his splendid offering "Chapter VIII".
