Review: Yes Mr Freeze this one's real cold! Shogun delve deep into their 15 year deep vault and pick four outstanding moments from their extensive catalogue for the special collectors vinyl series. Kicking off with the certified anthem "Dreadnaught", it's a wall-to-wall vibe fest with tracks that aren't just the best in Shogun's catalogue but some of the best drum & bass tunes releases this century full stop. If you have so much as a smidgeon of D&B interest then you'll already know how good these are. Calibre's timeless singalong remix of SpectraSoul's "Away With Me", Friction & K-Tee's ruckus-triggering "Set It Off" and the cult collaboration between Perez and Ivy Lab's Sabre "Solitary Native". If you focus you can see the speaker vibrate.

  3. Synergy (4:56)
  4. Undone (feat DRS) (5:20)
Review: Given the heavyweight talents involved, you'd expect this collaborative EP from Alix Perez and Spectrasoul to be pretty darn good. Predictably, it is, with both liquid funk/soulful D&B producers bringing their A-game to the table. They begin with the sublime "So Close", where languid female vocals and drowsy chords are underpinned by a punchy, high-tempo rhythm track, before opting for steppy beats, weighty bass, twinkling pianos and weary vocals on the similarly impressive "The Need". Flip to the B-side for the rolling D&B blues of "Synergy" and DRS hook-up "Undone", whose combination of rumbling sub-bass, yearning jazz pianos and stretched-out chords is effortlessly soulful.

  4. Proxima - "Sens8" (4:45)
Review: Friction's Shogun continues its centennial celebrations with four more wonderfully forward-thinking creations. Phace lets his hair down on "Mumbo Jumbo" where a grungy rolling groove provides deep layers and levels of dark funk. Joe Ford gets all cosmic and spacy with his Chords-style "Time Is Limited" while Ivy Lab buss up one of SpectraSoul's most delicate songs to date with subtle weight and spaciousness. Finally Proxima closes the show with alarmingly gritty halftime groove and a riff that sounds like the devil smashing up the church bells.

  4. Like This (4:34)
Review: Brighton badboys Spectrasoul have been surprisingly quiet this year, with an EP of remixes of tracks from 2017 album "How We Live" marking their only previous release. This four-tracker, then, boasts their first new music of 2018. It's mostly pretty tasty, all told, with opener "Untitled Horn" slowly building via waves of horror-influenced electronics and disorientated female vocal samples before shuffling towards the dancefloor in a John Carpenter-goes-D&B style. "Faithful" is a deep and soulful roller rich in evocative male vocals, lilting piano and punchy drum hits, while LSB hook-up "Silence" is atmospheric liquid D&B blessed with melancholic orchestration and a punchy, snare-heavy rhythm. The EP concludes with the similarly minded "Like This", which retains serious dancefloor weight despite the cinematic feel of its grandiose production.

Review: As the sun still sets on their evergreen third album How We Live Spectrasoul deliver a series of killer remixes and versions to celebrate. First up is this golden twist from Calibre. Immaculately redressed to highlight the delicate emotion and beauty of the original, it's yet another heart-stopping work of art from the singular Signature bossman. Spectrasoul themselves take care of "Say What" themselves by twisting up the swaggering halftimer into a beautiful rolling moonlit 170 jam while "Remember Me" closes the wax with its spacious plucks and barbed vocal. You won't forget this in a hurry.

Review: What a trip it's been for Spectrasoul; going solo with their label Ish Chat in spring 2016, they've assaulted us continuously over the course of 18 months. Taking us deep, dark, soulful, savage with abandon; never before has their melting pot been so fizzy or foundational. Naturally this third album is no exception as we glide and slide between the styles; the "Glimpse"-style space soul of "Move On", the Fracture-like hardcore references on "Push & Pull", the trembling chimes, sweeping strings and delicate vocals of "Wrong To Love You"(with LSB), the classic techstep movement of "Pinger" are just a handful of on-point constructions from a duo who are living the creative dream right now. Essential.

Review: SpectraSoul really aren't messing around with Ish Chat. Now hitting their third release, they've put out an album-sized trove of floor fire over the last year. No compromises, each cut has been exceptional and ticked a completely different box, this is the sound of two men on their absolute A-game... "Second Chance" is a persistent roller with pristine drums, an evocative faraway vocal refrain and lush grainy textures, "Fade Away" is just absolute darkness with a gruff, ruff BC-style grit to the bassline, "On & On" is a dreamboat roller with so much emotion you'll melt any crowd you play this to. Finally "Beat Keeps" taps into a halftime mentality with a whole gamut of gully twists along the way. Powerful stuff.

Review: The Brighton boys return with another power-punch collection on their own label Ish Chat. Once again it covers the full spectrum and scope of their skills: Tracks such as "Stock Sound" and "Tough Linen" really do hit hard with their full-flavour basslines and spiked out dynamics while "Waiting For..." reflects their soulful, musical side and "AKA Yoob" takes us to the left of their creations with daring, bouncy experimentalism that sounds like no one else. Spectrasoul are smashing it this year.

Review: 2016 is a big year for Spectrasoul duo Jack Stevens and David Kennett; the pair have become long term associates of Shogun Audio with two albums and countless 12"s in their discography for Friction's label. However, this year they have elected to branch out and launch their own label, Ish Chat, with this debut release showcasing Spectrasoul at their finest! There are plenty of strands to modern drum and bass, and the four tracks on this 12", Only You, really demonstrates Spectrasoul's mastery of them. The title track adopts a pensive, and dare we say almost poppy, take on the autonomic sound thanks to some deliciously manipulated vocals and a clear understanding of space. "SM1" is a full on junglist blast, whilst "From The Jaws" brings the jazzy stepper vibes and "4URGH" lands straight in screwface territory.

Review: It's taken Birmingham-based duo Spectrasoul three years to make the follow-up to their promising debut album, Delay No More, but it seems to have been time well spent. The Mistress is a pleasingly varied set, rooted in their deeper, more melodious take on D&B, but blessed with a range of other influences. "Hot Head, Rock Bed", for example, sounds like vintage James Blake, while "More To Give" - featuring the soulful tones of vocalist Tamara - expertly blends half-step rhythms with luscious modern soul. They even go experimental and gnarly on the frankly quite odd "Kutchi". For all the twists and turns, they've not forgotten their roots, and The Mistress also contains a number of straight-up D&B rollers that should appease DJs and fans alike.

Review: The second single to land ahead of Spectrasoul's highly-anticipated sophomore set The Mistress, "Shelter" emanates the duo's most sensitive, touching sides. Leaning heavily on a woozy half beat, full focus on placed on Lily's yearning, heart-torn vocals. D&B doesn't get any more emotional than this. Remix-wise Two Inch Punch lays down a darker, barbed beats twist with a treacle-thick slo-mo stomp while Spectrasoul themselves jump on the VIP with a 170 refix that's tailored for prime time floor flattening. Review: Their first single in two years, Spectrasoul return with the first tracks from their highly anticipated second album. "Always" is a sure-fire stunner thanks to its expert vocal sample use (both the lead and the backing chants) that's laid down over wonderfully tight rolling breaks and lush instrumentation. "I Don't Mind" reminds us of the duo's darker side as a soulful vocal cries out over a gritty, droning, distorted bassline that jitters and shakes rudely on the fills. Something tells us this is the start of a whole wealth of exceptional material from the south coast duo. We can't wait to hear the full album.

Review: Thelem returns to Innamind after a few excursions on Artikal and Blackbox with two firing examples of why dubstep still excites and amazes in 2013. "Bring Me Down" has been bubbling since Outlook Festival last summer; featuring the emphatic lyrical warnings of emerging MC T Man, it's powered with such a bulbous bass riff you can't help but swagger. "False Imprint" comes with the same level of gritty gravitas; swapping mic-fronting for a series of psychedelic washes, it's another heavyweight from Thelem. Powerful stuff.

Review: Brighton duo Spectrasoul grace Shogun Audio with their debut album Delay No More, following a slew lauded 12"s for the likes of Critical, Exit, Subtitles and Metalheadz. It's been a hotly anticipated LP in D&B circles and beyond, and it lives up to the hype with 13 tracks of dubby, nourish D&B pop. With guest vocals coming from the likes of Tamara Blessa, Terri Walker, MC Fox and Echo Park, there's plenty of variation to the beats, which range from classically-tinged, James Blake-ish introversion ("Knuckle Waltz", "The Curb") to more straight forward D&B rollers ("Sometimes We Lie"). Recommended.

Drum And Bass
  1. Down Town Chicago
  2. The Weakness
Review: More deep business from the Deep Soul Music crew. In a discernable change of direction from the emotive, deep sounds of their release on SGN:LTD,
the a-side presents a trademark incarnation of the devastatingly effective Spectrasoul formula; a bouncy track teeming with samples that work cohesively
to create a deep sense of ambience, in turn narrated by a male vocal. An upbeat bassline runs underneath some playful percussion to finish setting the
scene of 'Down Town Chicago'; an accomplished track that's replete with imagery, we have a feeling you're gonna like this one. The flip represents an
altogether more refined take on the Spectrasoul formula - an understated jazz piano lick works in tandem with quirky filtered bassline, carried along
effortlessly by the addictive shuffle of the beats.

Review: Soundtrax presents 'Ceramic', the new 12" single from Spectrasoul.
SpectraSoul is the alias of Brighton duo Jack Stevens and Dave Kennett, who show what can happen when two creative minds
combine in the studio. Taking inspiration from a diverse range of musical influences, spanning from soul to hip-hop, and even world
music to cinematic grooves, the duo explore the realms of sample-based production with open minds, creating an exciting blend of
soul-fuelled sounds & organically grooved beats that shine through. Musicality plays a pivotal part of the SpectraSoul sound,
combining organic musical elements with low end frequencies to bridge the gap between creative music and up-front dance floor
beats. This is a key aspect of the duos sound. SpectraSoul have solid DJ support from Commix, Friction, D-Bridge, Klute, Logistics,
Rohan Bassbin, Alix Perez, Insight, Icicle & Switch.

Review: Spectrasoul come with two big boy bassline killers. Spectrasoul take control of your ears with a track entitled "Emptyness Is Form" while "Ricochet" begins with tight metallic beats which take you to the drop.

Cat: SHABXSLP 05 . Rel: 30 Apr 15
Drum And Bass
  1. Spectrasoul - "Ben" (4:32)
  2. Rockwell - "Play Some Normal Music" (7:36)
Review: Two cuts taken from Shogun Audio's 10 Years collection, delivered - naturally - on 10". First up is Spectrasoul showing off their darker side with the gritty, scuffy techy roller "Ben". No messing around, just pure sandpaper soul. Next up is Rockwell's "Play Some Normal Music". Armed with a fantastically sweary sample (which, we hope, is a real recording taken in complete context) it's a rapid, acid-riddled neck-snap jam done in the way only Rockwell knows how. Hooray for normal music!
