Review: DJs this one is for you, The Makossa Man is back AGAIN after its 18 years of hiatus with more of their covers and remixes of the original 2003 EP. Limited to just 300 copies this is a much-welcomed love letter to DJs and the original EP, giving it a lease of new life and being a much-anticipated sequel to the sold-out original Makossa Man Remix EP that is set to release later this August. Carlos Nilmmns and Simoncino are a welcome return to the roster, serving up another plate of fantastic tribal deep house. The rhythms are infectious and hopefully serve as samples for some incredible DJ sets to come.

Creme Organization Valley Of Shadows x LIES EP

Legowelt - "Only In America"
Randomer - "Ugly Drummer"
Simoncino - "Earth & Nightfall"
Willie Burns - "He Is Crazy Enough"
Ron Morelli - "Signal Jam" (Greg Beato remix)
Review: If you're yet to add a Creme or L.I.E.S. record to your collection this year let this Creme Organization Valley Of Shadows x LIES EP kills two bids with the one stone. Or you could just get it for Randomer's obliterating "Ugly Drummer". Legowelt throws down some spiralling Detroitisms in "Only In America" following the colourful club construction Innershades provides in "Acid Rehearsal", and to match the brutality of Randomer's A-side cut is Ron Morelli's "Signal Jam" retooled as a darkly bending slab of cathedral techno by Greg Beato. Simoncino provides more of his usual sequenced Chicago house prowess in "Earth & Nightfall" leaving Willie Burns to let loose on the keys in "He Is Crazy Enough" when closing out this radical compilation.

Free Your Mind (Lerosa rendered mix)
Review: French label Skylax expand operations with the launch of the Stay Underground, It Pays initiative with the excellent Italian producer Simoncino at the helm for the debut release under his new Late Night Music alias. Judging by the material he has released so far this year, Simoncino doesn't actually believe in the concept of sleep and the five tracks Simoncino's produced for the Free Your Mind EP are as good as anything he's released to date. The label's press release conjures up the names of house and techno royalty like Mr Fingers, Mike Dunn, Joe Lewis, Drexciya, Dopplereffekt & Legowelt to describe what to expect here and that rings true, with the Late Night Music sound focusing on a heavily saturated thrust down the middle of vintage Chicago and Detroit dynamics. Do check the remix of the title track from Lerosa!

Nicholas - "Holdin On"
Nicholas - "On The Streets"
Simoncino - "Unknown"
Simoncino - "All Night"
Review: Italian duo Nicholas & Simoncino continue their ascent from limited white label edits to further recognition with this split release for the Quintessentials imprint. If you've kept an ear near their recent endeavours, you'll be smart to the decidedly old school 90s vocal house flex that runs deep through the four tracks here. Nicholas takes the lead with two tracks on the A Side which commence with "Holdin On" - heavy on the resplendent piano vibes, with big ivory flourishes sweeping across the bumping rhythm before an almighty vocal comes swooping in with Queenish aplomb. "On The Streets" is just as accomplished, leaning on some annoyingly familiar source material and containing a killer gospel breakdown. In contrast to the NJ garage style of the A Side, Simoncino serves up a double helping of Muzic Box worthy warehouse jams, with proto drum machine rhythms, big melodic washes and heavy analogue bass movements pervading both "Unknown" and "All Night".

Simoncino - "Dance"
Nicholas - "Our Hope"
Nicholas - "Love Sanctuary"
Simoncino - "Let It Loose"
Review: Two of the deep house/disco scene's most hyped young producers are brought together on this excellent little four-tracker for Ourvision. As the title suggests, the emphasis here is firmly on the analogue and old skool, with Italians Simoncino and Nicholas offering two late night flavoured bumpers apiece. The former's tracks are typically dreamy and loved-up, coming on like a cross between Mr Fingers and very early Italian house. Nicholas' offerings, meanwhile, focus more on the vocal end of the spectrum, emphasizing bleep melodies and heavy analogue basslines. We're not sure whether these are edits or originals; either way, they're delicious.

Review: Modern Italian deep house legend Simoncino returns for the 'Distant' EP, a fresh seven-tracker once more inspired by the classic Chicago and New York house sound, as is par for the course for this artist. A vintage va-va-voom is heard splayed across the septet, with the opener 'Distant' seemingly lowpassed at at least 16k, and ensuers 'Smoke Channel', 'Fantasy' and 'Tributes' equally revelling in such trace sonic irony. Despite the novelty of lo-fi house, there's a wicked hi-fi remix by Mr Fingers on there, proving Simoncino's thoroughly-rubbed shoulders and proximity to the pulse of history.

Mystery Girl (Merwyn Of Virgo Four dub mix) (3:53)
Review: Originally released early last decade, Simoncino's four-part The Warrior Dance series boasted a mix of inspired original productions and superb remixes. This 12" contains four of the best remixes, all of which first appeared between 2010 and 2012. Ron Trent's EP-opening revision of 'The Warrior Dance' is little less than analogue deep house perfection - all sparse drum machine beats, bittersweet chords, sci-fi synth sounds and the producer's usual emotive piano motifs - while Gene Hunt's take on 'Do It Again' is hypnotic, bass-heavy and reminiscent of Larry Heard's most bittersweet early works. Merwyn of Virgo Four drops two takes on 'Mystery Girl': a raw, analogue-rich deep house main mix, and a sparse, jacking and groove-based Dub.

Review: Second time around for Chez Damier's superb remixes of Simoncino classic 'Inga's Creme', which first surfaced way back in 2011 as part of The Warrior Dance Part 2 mini-album. On the A-side you'll find Damier's 'Club Mix' - a superb chunk of Prescription style peak-time deepness in which hazy, echoing synth sounds, ultra-deep pads and echoing spoken word snippets cluster around a locked-in, late-night groove. Side B opens with Damier's 'Morning After Mix Part 1', an even deeper and more dubbed-out interpretation tailor-made for misty-eyed sunrise sessions. It's followed by the 'Morning After Mix Part 2', a previously unreleased ambient house style interpretation built around gorgeous chords, bubbly melodies and slowly building percussion.

Cosmic Paradise (Larry Heard Underground remix) (8:12)
Warriors Dance (Ron Trent remix) (9:38)
Review: Given that Nick Anthony Simoncino's take on house has always been nostalgic and retro-futurist in nature, frequently paying tribute to the '80s and '90s work of key American producers, it seems fitting that his latest 12" boasts rubs of catalogue tracks from two deep house icons, Larry Heard and Ron Trent. Heard steps up first with a version of 'Cosmic Paradise' that peppers a tactile, hardware-driven groove with sparkling, freestyle/Italo-disco style synth riffs and plenty of the Chicagoan's fluid piano motifs. Trent delivers his interpretation of 'Warriors Dance', offering a Latin-tinged drum machine rhythm, spacey chords for days, attractive synth sounds aplenty and echoing, dubbed-out electronics. Both reworks are, as you'd expect from such giants of deep house, utterly gorgeous.

Review: Simoncino is a link to house music's past - he makes tunes that are coated in that same dustiness that we all love so much about the OGs. And he does it well, whether going deep, dreamy, tribal, vocal or piano. Here he links with another original great in the form of heroic vocalist Robert Owens. and they cook up a two-part track that is steeped in mystic magic and driven by perfect deep house drums. Simoncino also adds three further solo cuts that all sink you into a world of cuddly, thoughtful house perfection. A Riviera Ambient Mix adds a nice blissed-out vibe to finish.

Review: French label Skylax has always dealt in proper quality, no-frills, fad-free house music from a diverse array of artists. Italian Simoncino is someone with a proud throwback sound - his house is coated in dust, with dreamy Italian house melodies and a warm, fuzzy, glowing sense of nostalgia. And that's what we get here across three new cuts which range from the thumping tribal sounds of the opener to the super deep and vocal cut 'The Lost Tape II' via the hands-in-the-air piano house joy of 'The Lost Tape III.' A brilliantly low-slung, fizzing and raw remix from the one and only Marcellus Pittman remix makes this a timeless collection.

Jungle Dream (Ron Trent remix part I) (9:59)
Jungle Dream (Ron Trent remix part II) (10:00)
Review: First released way back in 2011 on one of Nick Anthony Simoncino's fine EPs for Metamatics, 'Jungle Dream' smartly joined the dots between turn-of-the '90s Italian dream house and the more jacking end of late '80s Chicagoan house. It was always ripe for remixing, such was the mixture of attractive musical elements on show, and we can't think of anyone more suited to the task than deep house legend Ron Trent. On the A-side 'Part I' remix, Trent tiptoes the fine line between attractive dreaminess and percussively weighty late-night house voodoo - all layered drums, groovy bass, whispered vocal snippets, languid lead lines and immersive pads. He goes for a more expansive, sunrise-ready sound - complete with fluid, Balearic house keyboard solos, sultry synth strings and sun-kissed chords - on the flipside 'Part II' mix.

It's a massive collection of work by the HotMix Records boss, where as always, there is much diversity within his sonic repertoire. From hypnotic slow burners such as 'Psyco Village', or the echo laden stomp of 'Tape I' (a collaboration with Detroit dub techno hero Luke Hess) to deeply meditative tribal excursions like 'In The Spirit' and 'Akaweba' to the punchy groove of 'My Fev Girl Is The Next' - all killer no filler on this one!

Review: Nick Anthony Simoncino is the perfect choice to add to the ever-expanding Love Notes narrative. His classically rooted, passionate approach to hardware house music chimes with previous 'Noters like Octo Octa and Casey Tucker, and the quality is as high on this 12" as one of his many appearances on Creme Organization or Vibraphone, to name but a few. "Perugia 1989" is quintessential Simoncino - simple in its construction but beautifully engineered with all emphasis on an undulating bassline. "Bella Ciao" is a more tense cut that uses some nervy synth phrases to eke out a trance-indebted mood, and then "My Brother, Dani" maintains the theme with a dramatic use of space and jittery percussion.

Deep House
Review: Given that Simoncino has made no secret of his love for old Larry Heard productions - even going so far as to create whole albums worth of material in the great man's style - it's pleasing to see the Chicago deep house legend remixing "Beyond The Dance", a track first issued on L.I.E.S back in 2014. Happily, Heard seems to revel in Simoncino's warm, analogue-rich sound, turning in two versions that sound like long lost Chicago deep house classics from the turn of the nineties. We're particularly enjoying the flipside Mr Fingers Dark Mix, where ricocheting percussion hits, creepy synth lines and wayward electronics ride thrusting drum machine hits and woozy analogue bass.

Review: On his two previous albums, 2012's The Dream of Amnesia and 2013's Open Your Eyes, Simoncino indulged his love of vintage deep house, variously doffing a cap to Larry Heard, Dream 2 Science, the Burrell Brothers and Lamont Booker. On Amazon Atlantis, he's flipped the script, utilizing his vast bank of classic synthesizers and drum machines to pay tribute to the sci-fi inspired sounds of 1980s Detroit techno. Of course, there are a few nods towards his deep house influences (most notably the Vincent Floyd hook-up "Memories Of Summer"), and a couple of curveballs - see the apache break and ambient house textures of "90's Theme" - but for the most part it's a delicious Motor City tribute. Perhaps the most stunning example of this is "Planet Paradise", a brilliant collaboration with Legowelt.

Review: Given that Simoncino has never hidden his admiration for early deep house producers - much of his material sounds like it was inspired by Larry Heard, the Burrell brothers and Lamont Booker - it's unsurprising to find that his latest EP pays tribute to legendary NYC deep house producer Bobby Konders. Stylistically, this isn't much of a shift; as usual, Dreams of Konders comes swaddled in dreamy pads, vintage synthesizers and the unmistakable pulse of original analogue drum machines. Simoncino explores a range of moods - from the deep space swirl of "Meggaton" and chugging pulse of "Pyramids", to the snuggly warmth of the title track - with the faintly foreboding "Space Is The Place" standing out.

Io Rhythm
Review: The impressively prolific Nick Anthony Simoncino returns to L.I.E.S, some two years on from his last outing for Ron Morelli's acclaimed imprint. Simoncino rarely strays from his tried-and-tested blueprint - think vintage synths, crusty drum machines, and tracks influenced by classic Chicago house, proto-house, acid and Detroit techno - and Able Dance is no different. Its expansive melodies, sweaty rhythms, spacious chords and darting electronics are, though, particularly appealing. The heady positivity of "Io Rhythm" is probably our pick, though the spooky atmosphere and bongo-laden groove of "Able Dance" is similarly impressive. Despite its' ghostly nature, it still feels strangely exotic.

Review: Renowned analogue fetishist Simone Vescovo makes a welcome return, popping up on the mighty Creme Organization with another EP of spine-tingling late night atmospherics. As with his recent LP for Mathematics, Open Your Eyes, Vescovo plays around with moods and tempos, delivering a pair of impeccable synthesizer soundscapes (the brilliant "Interval I" and "Interval II") and a trio of vintage house tracks. With its undulating melodies, clattering Chicago drums and melancholic chords, "Tape 1" sounds like Behaviour-era Pet Shop Boys produced by Larry Heard. There's more Heard influence on the gorgeous, heartbreaking "Tape II", while "Tape III", with its winding new age melodies and hissing cymbals, sounds like a long lost Burrell Brothers' Nu Groove-era masterpiece.

Review: Nick Anthony Simoncino has long stood as one of the most authentic of all Italian advocates of classic Chicago house music, and he's already dropping his second long player after the well-received The Dream Of Amnesia on Thug last year. This time around Mathematics is the appropriate home for this most romantic of takes on analogue house, and there's a raft of high profile remixers woven into the fabric of the record, namely Ron Trent and Dream 2 Science. The mood across the record is a universally ethereal one, taking its cue from Larry Heard in his most seductive tones, but there are spicier moments to be found such as the more up-for-it stomp of "Ai Shi Tai (Japanese Love)" or the rugged "Vacanze In Riviera", but even then the pads and strings ensure the heart is well catered for.

Review: Should you require some justification for Simoncino's reputation as the most prolific of Italian exponents of dusty house music consider this fact: In the period since his last appearance on Mathematics in the summer of 2011 with Beat The Street, the Italian has graced no less than ten different labels (including Echovolt, LIES and Skylax) with some 14 releases including a full album! There's no denying Simoncino manages to bring a consistency to match such copious output, as demonstrated on his return to Jamal Moss' label with the wonderfully titled International Smoke Signals EP. The brief opening "Intro Outro Cosmo" sets the tone for what follows as fragile, chiming synth tones fill the expanses amidst female laughter before descending into the deep silence that precedes the arrival of "Dark Devotional Energies". Here tape saturated synths chime deep beneath the familiar rattle of interchanging percussive patterns, with the dense thud of kick drum ever present throughout. From here, Simoncino widens his focus, taking in the looser Utopian sheen of "The China Syndrome", dramatic beatless soundscape ("Place Space This Galaxy") and tumbling Jakbeat gone Italo disco brilliance ("Easing The Cosmic Streets").

Review: It comes as little surprise to us that Nick 'Anthony' Simoncino would eventually release an EP for Brooklyn-based house nerds, L.I.E.S. It seems like a natural progression for both the Italian DJ/producer and Ron Morelli, who has a knack for associating his label with under-the-radar artists of the highest calibre. The title track, though being shaped by a pulsing bassline and a menacing exchange of hi-hats, allows room for the synthesizer to glide the listener towards the euphoric trance of "Mystic Motion", where chirping melodies are surrounded by warm percussion elements. "On A Journey" removes the nostalgia of the previous two tracks by emphasising messages of hope and morality, and there's yet more intricate layering of synth pads and mysticism on "Enigma". Highly recommended.

Review: The quite prolific Italian producer Simoncino adds Echovolt to his already impressive array of record label outlets - Skylax, On The Prowl, Mathematics and Quintessential is a pretty flossy CV by any standards. The Greek label themselves have also impressed with every step they take in their short release history to date, and Simoncino's Werehouse EP continues Echovolt's remit of releasing house music steeped in analogue detail. "Chicago" commences like an off cut from John Carpenter's recording studio before settling into a bewitching melange of chiming melodies, crisp drum patterns and gushing pads. Alongside it "Ocean" applies vast swathes of analogue texture over the rough hewn drum sounds that filter through the run out grooves of countless Mathematics releases and there are of course plenty of seaside effects washed over the top. The flip holds the title track as well as a remix from Echovolt regular and Juno hero Legowelt, which is reason enough to investigate!

A Chicago house and Detroit techno devotee, his dedication to US electronic music couldn't be more fitting for Skylax. Kicking of with "Mystery Girl" we're instantly immersed in Simoncino's deeper than deep, meandering house with heavy percussive pockets and soothing vocals; a theme that remains with "Kojima" and "Do It Again". Light and airy high ends are kept adrift by hearty and rich bass lines, striking the perfect balance for chilled out yet pumping listening. On the flip "Mystery To Me" and "Paradise To Me" are riddled with gorgeously rapid hi-hats and long drawn out beds, their style and sophistication fiercely evident.

Review: After debuting last year with some decidedly throwback house antics for On The Prowl, and Mathematics, Simoncino starts the year with a full release for the prolific Italian imprint No More Hits. Retaining the feel of his initial output, you're gonna be hooked as soon as the heavily phased 80s electro bass drops in unison with the euphoric female vocals on opening track "Tales Of Mistery". Heavily drenched in rough 808 drums and dubbed out snares, it's a delight from start to finish. Following this "Vae Victis" is on a more atmospheric old skool electro tip, filled with swathes of ethereal pads, rasping kicks and hats and a deep deep bass line that retains prominence until the arrival of some decidedly outer galactic synth work! Proceedings are just as impressive on the flip too, with "Mind Games" standing out the most by flipping a late 80s vocal Chicago House classic with the introduction of some soft disco synth action.

Review: No chance to pause for breath when it comes to On The Prowl - with the wax barely dry on the freshly pressed Andy Ash 12", we are treated to the fourth instalment in the Party Breaks series from the (semi) mysterious Simoncino. A record collector of some repute, Siomncino has already popped up with releases on Italian edits stable No More Hits, and here takes the Party Breaks sound into new territory with four killer analogue jams. A Side opener "Mango" takes on a deepish hue which contrasts nicely with the funk-infused melody of "Too Much Party". Flip over for the 80s boogie vibe of "Jump Street" before "Beat Shave" winds things up amidst a sea of killer vocal refrains and a delicious reverberating synth stab.

Where Did U Go (original)
Where Did U Go (dub)
Review: Simoncino is so prolific we have a wager going in the office that the Italian isn't actually human, but rather some kind of Chicago House obsessed cyborg programmed to skillfully manipulate an array of analogue machinery. Releasing two 12"s in one week only strengthens these odds, with the excellent Greek label Echovolt the conduit through which Simoncino presents his latest experiments on the house sound. "Where Did U Go" sees Simoncino team up with legendary UK vocalist Julian Jonah - a man who has worked with Paul Hardcastle and 187 Lockdown in his time - for some shimmering house business that brings to mind classic Larry Heard or Ten City. As sublime as the A Side version is, the DJ's will probably favour the accompanying Dub version.

Groove Boys Project - "Studio 937 Mix" (9:40)
FTG - "Afro Manimal Mix" (6:36)
Review: Way back in the early 2000s, Hardrock Striker's (now dormant) Parisonic Records imprint debuted with a pair of EPs that breathed new life into classic cuts from 'Makossa Man', Manu Dibango. To celebrate the series' 20th anniversary, the Paris scene veteran has decided to bring back Soul Of The Makossa Man, this time via an EP containing four cover versions/sample-heavy productions. Simncino steps up first with 'Tribal Spirit Mix', a percussion rich hybrid dub disco/sturdy house number, before FTG delivers the hypnotic deep house excellence of the 'Deep In The Jungle Mix'. FTG returns to close the EP with the hybrid electronic/organic brilliance of the 'Afro Manimal Mix', while the 'Studio 937 Mix' by Groove Boys Project sounds like an unlikely collaboration between Dibango and the Burrell Brothers.

Simoncino & Merwyn Sanders - "On The Dance Floor" (Legowelt remix) (7:15)
Simoncino - "In Viaggio Con Federica" (6:16)
Review: Some cross-generational, peak-time-ready action here, as Nick Anthony Simoncino pitches up on Hardrock Striker's Skylax label with former Virgo Four member Merwyn Sanders in tow. Sanders provides evocative spoken and sung vocals on 'On The Dancefloor', a hypnotic chunk of warehouse-ready, trance-inducing brilliance in which short, 'French Kiss'-sytle synth loops ride a bubbly analogue bassline and hypnotic, locked-in beats. The pair also offer up a mind-mangling, extra-hypnotic dub, before Legowelt re-imagines the track as an acid-flecked chunk of analogue deep house that could have been recorded at any time in the last 30-odd years. Further TB-303-fired, Chicago style turn of the '90s deep house can be found on rather good Simoncino solo cut 'In Viaggio Con Federica'.

Vakula - "809" (5:38)
Simoncino - "Laura B" (Transimeno Dream mix) (4:15)
Vincent Floyd - "Euphoric Recall" (6:24)
Reggie Dokes - "She A Freak" (5:24)
Review: It would be fair to say that Release Sustain has put together a particularly hot line-up of production talent on this compilation style EP. Vakula kicks things off with "809", a thrillingly trippy chunk of heads-down house built around a relentless electronic riff and clattering drum machine percussion, before Italian producer Simoncino steals the show with "Laura B (Transimeno Dream Mix)", where haunting flute lines, Larry Heard chords and dusty vocal samples cluster around a heady, analogue-rich groove. On the flip, you'll find a deliciously positive and loved-up chunk of melodious deep house breeziness from veteran Vincent Floyd, and some fuzzy, jammed-out analogue deep house warmth from sometime Royal Oak and We Play House man Reggie Dokes.
